Captain of the Riders of Haemil
Niyut wrote: "I have dreamed of our enemies and I know their numbers. I dreamed of an avalanche that culled a third of their numbers. Their leader has a red mane and wields a powerful, flaming bow. He sits astride a dire bear, filled to the brim with magic. Around him he has gathered twenty-seven rangers riding wargs. Each possesses a lesser ensorcelled bow. The remainder of their army is 106 rangers, sixty-seven slayers, two giants and five ogres. They come from the west and must ford the Great River somehow." "This will be a night to remember... They will need to find a way to cross the river, that is true... I have forty horsemen that I can call upon. They can head north and stay concealed in the mountain road that leads to the pass. I would imagine that they will leave their archers at long range as they did previously. If one of you can illuminate the area, my riders can charge from behind when their ground forces... hopefully... fall for your illusion," the captain says with a contemplative look. "The question is who should be the target of our archers... the gnoll infantry or their giants? And where will that big red gnoll position itself... and the worg riders, where will they be? If they are in the back, they will certainly interfere with my calvary's charge on their archers." He paces about a moment, then crosses his arms and bows his head. "We'll need to be flexible. Adjust our strategy once we see how they distribute themselves on the battlefield."

Foramdar squints his eyes at Niyut as she rambles on about storms and shapings, but his mood quickly lightens as he hears of the Amber Key. "That is excellent news. The King has evacuated the lower city into the upper tier. The priests of Calladrym will activate the Circle of the Whispering Wind once they have the key." Hearing the report of the oncoming gnoll forces, he nods slowly. "With the King and the bulk of the army defending the main gates to Earthenwork, it will fall upon us to holdback the forces here. I have 80 men of Haemil with me, ready to defend the city with their lives... and we can protect your form as well if your magic would remove you to the spirit world." After another moment of consideration, he continues, "Rhykal is with the King, but several of her apprentices are at her tower. Perhaps one of them could be of assistance with the repairing of the walls."

The thunderous approach of horselords led by Captain Foramdar draw the groups attention back to the present. As he brings his steed to a halt, the captain lifts the visor of his soiled helm. A wry grin crosses his face. "So... you're alive. Well done! When the alarms sounded that the enemy had attacked from the north as well, I thought your return was in doubt." He gestures in Leezzâ's direction, "And you've brought a stray back with you it seems. Quite capable from what our guard upon the wall tells me." He lowers hisses a moment from the snow elf in deference. "The ogre has marched upon Earthenwork's main gates. They hold for now but the charm's of the gods' have seemed to have failed us since this... Shaping... as you call it. Their foul magic has brought the fiery power of the sun upon us," he continues. "Tell me, your news. Did your errand prove fruitful?"

After gathering and bartering for supplies, the group is shown to a large dining hall where hundreds of armor clad warriors are feasting in relative quiet. Great banners hanging from the ceiling signify different divisions and brigades within Haemil's military. Many of the tables are being addressed by what clearly appears to be an officer of some rank. Foramdar greets you at the entry and leads you to an unadorned table near the front of the room. Informing you that it is one of several tables reserved for guests, he offers each of you a chair and signals for food and refreshments to be brought. "This isn't our usual fair. In quieter times, the feast would be much better, but given the calamity we've all suffered these past weeks, this will have to do." Despite what the Knight tells you, you enjoy the best meal you've had since the world was broken.

"By horseback... one full day of riding with little more than two stops such as we've just made. If you were to rest fully now, and likely one more time, you could reach Haemil in two days. I understand your hesitancy, but I must press onward. I will send aid as soon as I reach the gates of Haemil. Be mindful that my Lord Helluddar is not nearly as tolerant of outsiders as you have found me. He is concerned for his people and will be cautious. These are troubled times and he cares much for his people." With those words, Captain Foramdar nods at each of you then spurs his steed into action. As the dust settles, you feel the chill of the wind biting at you. Not since before the Keep have you felt the cold so much as tonight.

"Yes, fortunate it was that you came along," the commander said as he handed the reigns to the nervous hobgoblin. He nodded as Gruskorb calmed the animal then climbed upon his back. "His Rider was a great warrior and close friend. He shall bear you well." His eyes grow dark as the rogue discusses the gnoll's use of poison. "Thank you. I shall pass along the warning." Later upon the road... Foramdar stares straight ahead keeping a stern look ahead as he addresses Niyut. "We have been aware of the gathering of gnolls for many years... they are lead by an ogre named Rgulblux. They had been raiding towns along the lower coast along the northern ocean prior to the cataclysm. When the world broke we lost the western section of the Plains of Haemil. We sent scouts to cross the void and send word of our western outposts along the cliffs. While we waited, the gnolls attacked us." Captain Foramdar pushes the group to its limits, riding for nearly twelve hours before calling for a short rest. And although he is weary, he patrols the area while his horse remains alert as it freely roams the makeshift camp. After a bite of food and a couple hours of rest, he climbs into the saddle and calls out to the group, "It is time we move!"

Foramdar greets everyone as they introduce themselves with a deliberate nod and a stern audit of their worth. Answering the oracle's questions, he remarks, "Rhykal lives and thrives in her tower within our city walls. She would likely receive you with great interest if you bear news from Talanor. You may follow along with me if you can keep the pace. News of the gnolls invasion must reach my lord's ear quickly." He looks back towards the battlefield, and his grief is evident. But without another glance westward, he turns and leads the party to toward Haemil. "Rest will be found when the ride is finished, until then, we ride on," he says to know one in particular. |
