FRIENDS / ENEMIES

Friend: Grace, an extortionist. Many of the rich kids at university fall into debt despite their ludicrous allowances, and Grace is the person who gets sent to "remind" them to pay up. Finraeth was good at not getting into debt, and so never fell on her bad side. Indeed, he has occasionally alerted her to the students who are off-limits by virtue of having powerful and/or well-connected parents. She's just doing her job, after all. He can respect that.
Enemy: Mercy, a cold killer. It is very, very rare, but occasionally the power struggles of the city at large spill into the university and a student pays for the mistakes of their parents. Such events are always supposed to look like accidents. Finraeth's mistake was walking in when Mercy was busy making one of his friends "fall out the window" - Finraeth survived because his name wasn't on the kill list, but Mercy beat the snot out of him as a warning before she left (Finraeth is no slouch in a fight, but Mercy is on another level... at least for now).

STORY

Finraeth is the fourth generation of a family that has a long history in the import trade. His sister had the head for business and got to stay while Finraeth was sent off to university, their father wanted the family to achieve higher. He was a bit resentful at first, but quickly learned to enjoy it. He quietly dropped his last name - if the aim was to achieve higher, and mingle with the nobility, then better to have no last name than a common one.
He did well at the social side of university life, where his ability to hold his drink and stay on his feet during a bout of fisticuffs (rich boys can't punch) led to some recognition; enough at least that his peers were prepared to gloss over his upbringing as long as he wasn't coarse enough to throw it in their faces. He even attended a class or two and discovered where the library was, which is more than many students ever achieve.
Unbenowst to either Finraeth or his sister, the majority of the families' business was actually in smuggling. Finraeth only found this out after it was all too late. With the family business burned to the ground, and his father dead, he could no longer afford tuition - or much of anything. He just about managed to clear his debts, but he now lives in a level of poverty he's never before experienced.
