About Faro al-Wati

Haunted by a half-remembered past, Faro has been given a second chance at life by the old gods of Osirion, and charged with averting a supernatural disaster.

Name: Faro al-Wati
Race: Human
Alignment: NG
Classes: Mortal Usher 3 / Rogue (Thug, Unchained) 3 / Slayer 3

Background:
In his youth, Faro was a bandit who ran with a rough crowd; he and his cohorts held up caravans and picked pockets in the area surrounding the city of Wati, where Faro was born. He remembers nothing of his parents, who turned him out as soon as he was old enough to survive on his own, and very little of the life of crime that he lived. It was only his desperate circumstances that forced him to prey on others, and he often argued for mercy to their victims. It was better, he thought, to scare them away than to kill them. He was ultimately stabbed in the back during a dispute over division of spoils and died, his body dumped in the desert.

Perhaps that should have been the end for poor Faro. His soul traveled to the Boneyard to be judged, but for some strange reason he did not pass on to his final destination. Strange animal-headed figures stared at him through what seemed to him like a restless dream. They argued about him, criticized him, pushed him, but he weathered their attention with resigned grace. Eventually, booming voices in his head told him that they wanted to "hire" him for a "job." THE FORGOTTEN PHAROAH SEEKS TO RETURN TO LIFE, AIDED BY HIS MINIONS, the voices shouted. YOU WILL BE OUR FORGOTTEN FARO, TASKED WITH PREVENTING HIS RESURRECTION, OR WITH HUNTING HIM DOWN AND SLAYING HIM IF THEY SHOULD SUCCEED. IN PAYMENT, YOUR JUDGMENT SHALL BE... DELAYED.

Hazy shapes wrapped his body in cloth like a cocoon, and fitted his chest with some sort of woven metal breastplate, and placed a funerary mask upon his face. As he lay there on a platform, his longspear in one hand and what felt like a heavy book in the other, a great light shone down upon him and voices raised in song. When it grew so hot that he flinched away he realized he was lying upon a cracked stone slab in the desert, beneath the noonday sun. Sweat had formed on his brow; he was alive. His possessions were unfamiliar to him, and seemed ancient but sturdy. Some of them were obviously magical, including a blue stone marked with the sign of an ostrich feather that naturally floated just above his head. As he got his bearings, he saw a settlement in the distance, and soon he made his way there: the city of Tephu.

It wasn't long before he found his way to the Houses of Order and Wisdom, where the priests seemed to recognize the symbols upon his clothes as belonging to Maat and Thoth, among those of other ancient Osirion deities. There, he was brought before the high priests, to whom he explained what had happened to him, and everything he could remember about what the voices had said. They invited him to stay at the temple, and promised to do what they could to find out more information about Faro's apparently god-given quest.

Description:
Faro walks with a slight hunch to his shoulders and a crouch in his step, as if he is always trying to hide himself. His face is usually covered with a bone-white plague mask. He wears a chain shirt that appears to have been woven out of gold and stiffened linen, marked with celestial symbols of many of the ancient Osirion gods. He carries a long spear that is also marked with ceremonial runes and shapes all across the shaft and point. A blue stone with an ostrich feather on it floats just above his head. His voice is scratchy and rough, much like his face looks whenever it is revealed.

He has not quite had enough time to come to terms with his new existence as a mercenary of the old gods, and it frightens him a bit. Since he has been returned to life, he feels obligated to pursue the task as it was outlined for him, though he is not sure exactly how to do so. He tries to cover his lack of confidence with menace and enigmatic silence. There is a part of him that desires to be worthy of this gift that has been bestowed upon him, and is troubled by the ominous sound of the words "your judgment" and "delayed" still echoing through his mind.
