Pharasman Shrine:
Faithe's eyes narrowed as she heard the goons say they would unlock the door and focused on her connection to the boneyard through her goddess. Bones appeared forming around her body and molding into armor. What looked like a pair of skeletal hands wrapped around her torso, cupping her breasts even as ribs appeared over her stomach and torso, a hip arapped around her pelvis and a spine pressed along her own. It was a macabre sight, as if a skeleton had grasped her in an intimate embrace.

Faithe heard the door unlock and begin to open as she readied her scythe. She would try to scare them off before fighting but was not dumb enough to give them an opening.

If they come inside
When the door opened and the thugs came inside Faithe waited until the first one stepped in and she stepped out from behind the door into his path as she said, "Who dares intrude on the Santcum of the Lady of Graves!."

This wil either end really well or really poorly.

Thugs:
Faithe listened quietly as the thugs spoke. One of them might egg on the other but it sounded like they might leave without being noticed. She remained in her place, ready to fight if necessary.

Mercutio:
Faithe was surprised when she heard the loud call from outside and knew they had a problem. She wasn't sure what to do with Mercution but quickly decided and told him to go to what she thought would be the best hiding place she could think of in the shrine and to take his tea with him before heading towards the door.

She grabbed her scythe and headed towards the door and, when she arrived, Faithe had the scythe in hand as she made sure the door was locked. Once she was done with that Faithe stood to on the side the door would open towards, making sure to stay clear of where it would swing, and waited to see if the thugs would try to break into the shrine.

I figure there is some kind of hiding place but am unsure myself what it would be. Also, if the thugs bust the door in Faithe will active her bone armor and prepare to confront them. She won't attack but does plan to try and intimidate the crap out of them.

Mercutio:
Faithe listened, her posture open and encouraging, occasionally sipping her tea. The story started off common enough, it was the kind of life she herself would have had, at least up until the becoming a burglar. Women, and sometimes even men, with her beauty ended up somewhere very different in similar circumstances. At first she thought he was lucky, then he was made to start targeting those who were not well off, those more like themselves, and that explained why he had come here.

Tiefling were not evil by nature, they may have some tendencies in that direction but that didn't make them do bad things. If anything did that it was the fact that society forced them into situations where they had little choice if they wanted to live. Faithe had a few people treat her similarly after mistaking her for a tiefling. She knew she wasn't one but she still wasn't quite sure what she was, only that everywhere was too bright and too hot for her tastes!

"So," Faithe said, "you have come here hoping for sanctuary from Palaveen." She sipped her tea as she considered her response, Faithe wanted to help him but she was unsure how much help they could be in keeping him hidden from Palaveen. Finally she decided, "For now, at least, you can stay here. I do not know how well we can keep you hidden here, how safe you will be, there is not much to this chapel. Once priestess Hellina returns maybe she will have a better idea of how to help."

Mercutio:
Faithe worked on the tea as she responded to Mercutio's words, "I am called Faithe." Faithe let silence reign as she made the tea and then served it.

Once she sat down and took a sip of the tea Faithe asked, "So what, exactly, has brought you here Mercutio?"

The Shrine:
Faithe could tell the man was panicked at the thought of being caught and she decided that she needed to get him out of sight for now. She moved over to him, her steps graceful, as she approached. Faithe reached one hand out to the small of the tiefling's back as she gestured towards the shrine with the other, "Come, let us get you out of sight for now and we can talk." With that Faithe began guiding the man further into the shrine towards the quarters she shared with the priestess, "I will make some tea and you can tell me what is going on."

Tielfing:
Faithe nodded in response to the tiefling's question and responded, "Yes, we can offer sanctuary, though the priestess will need to make a final decision. There is little space in the shrine, but you are welcome to it."

Faithe gestured for the tiefling to come further into the shrine and asked him, "I expect the Priestess to be back shortly so please relax as much as you can."{/b]

Looking back the way the tiefling had come Faithe asked, [b]"Should we be expecting someone coming after you"

Pharasma's Shrine:
Faithe was a bit surprised at the tiefling's eyes, they were quite intriguing but she didn't stare for long. She was used to such reactions to herself and she preferred not to make other unnecessarily uncomfortable without good reason. With a shake of her head Faithe responded, "Not exactly, I am an acolyte of the shrine, not a formal priestess."

Faithe gestured towards the city proper and said, "Priestess Hellina is in town taking care of some tasks." Staying in the shadowed place Faithe gestured towards the tiefling and asked, "Is there something I can help you with?"

So question, how does shadow melding interact with darkvision?

My assumption is that it doesn't matter if the viewer has darkvision. only if Faithe is standing in the correct light level to trigger the effect but thought I should check while I was thinking about it.

Pharasma's Shrine:
Faithe, as she often did on the hot days, stayed in as much shadow as she could. The bright sun was painful to her eyes, even when she had time to adjust, she could barely tolerate it, and she burned easily in the direct rays of sun above them. Fortunately, the shadows abound in Westcrown and she could always find a patch to stand in when she needed to.

It used to bother Faithe that she felt so comfortable with the darkness, she could only assume it was connected to her early childhood, the dark place of black and grey she could barely recall. When she stepped into shadows it was as if the darkness embraced her, let her merge with it, it felt like...home?

While one would expect someone so weak to the harsh light from above to stay heavily clothed with no skin to be seen, Faithe did not. In fact, she revealed quite a lot of her skin to let the wind blow over her to cool her because in addition to too bright the daytime was too hot as well. Fortunately, in these shadows this was an easily manageable problem.

As usual her place in the shadow caused Faithe's body to easily meld into the dim space it was hard to spot her there if you weren't actively looking for someone and even then, is what hard to tell exactly where she was. So it was that Faithe was in one of her usual places as she watched over the shrine and saw the tiefling approach. Well, she thought he was a tiefling at least, he certainly looked the part. While she wasn't exactly trying to hide she wasn't making her presence obvious either as she watched the man stand before the shrine.

After giving him a few minutes Faithe, with her deep black cloak and hood pulled around her and the scythe slung across her back behind her, Faithe decided to speak up, "Welcome to the Shrine of Pharasma, is there anything I can do to aid you?"

After a moment's thought Faithe realized that Tuco was right, the wildmagic was being pushed back. She looked at Tuco and nodded as she said, "Yes, I feel it as well, at least the magic being pushed back. This is both fascinating and useful to us."

Her gaze shifted then to Joie and Faithe said, "If this does indeed push back the wildmagic as it seems to it is very valuable and, yes, dangerous. However," she kept her strange eyes looking into Joie's, "if we are going to continue looking into this we should keep this ring for now. Having the ability to use our magic without fear in wild magic zones would be incredibly useful to us." Faithe's eyes narrowed slightly as she continued to hold Joie's gaze, "While I agree that keeping it out of the hands of Geb is important I don't have a reason to trust Nex either and as we are working together I do not believe any one of us gets to demand we all do things their way. Can you give us a reason this would be better kept at the embassy than with us for now beyond it being your duty as a loyal Nexian officer? Remember that most of us hold no loyalty to Geb or Nex and maybe not even Alkenstar."

Faithe felt the magic begin to move and swirl around them leaving a faint metallic taste in her mouth. It was the way magic had tasted since she awoke in this strange place of color and light. That the feeling grew stronger as the séance proceeded and she tried to read as much as she could from the increasingly turbulent eddies around her. When Tuco asked if she could feel the stone pushing the magic away Faithe considered the question.

As she did so Faithe heard Joie demand that they turn the ring in to the Nexian Embassy. That the woman thought she could order them around rankled Faithe a little, she was too used to being in charge of only herself and that tone grated on her nerves. Still she tried to ignore it for now and instead focused on the sensation of magic in the room.

Do I feel what Tuco is asking?

Faithe enjoyed her food and when they left the bar reluctantly followed to where Jace was staying. When it was asked if anyone could see what magic might be on the ring Faithe shook her head and said, "No." Fortunetly it seemed that Tuco could so she stood back and waited for him to do what ever he needed to do.

Faithe had been very quiet as they got what they needed from the ghoul, so quiet that it seemed she'd almost been forgotten in her shadowy corner, She stayed there until the others had all been escorted out and the ghoul was being removed to his cell. She was quiet as she slipped from the shadows and walked through the door behind the ghoul until she said softly, "Don't forget to keep an eye out behind, I'll be there again someday, hehehehahaha," she finished it off with an evil laugh and headed to where she figured the others were calling back to the ghoul, "And don't forget to tell Jerrad I look forward to our next...conversation because heads will roll."

With the others:
Faithe caught up with the others about the time the money was given to them and considered what they had planned next. The thought of going out and getting drunk didn't much appeal to Faithe, she'd never been one who liked to let her guard down, and she was going to head home and sleep some more. Faithe was exhausted from the odd hours she'd been keeping lately, it just felt unnatural to her to be up when the sun was in the sky.

All things considered Faithe didn't think that going off on her own was a wise idea just then, not with the mess they'd gotten themselves into, so she opted to stay with the group instead. When they entered the bar Faithe found herself feeling...out of place almost immediately. Still she was here so she might as well find a spot to sit. It seemed that Tuco found them a table and Faithe went and took a seat there in the spot with the least light in it.

When their waitress arrived and introduced herself Faithe considered what to order and decided that, since Jase was paying, she'd take advantage of it. "Do you have food as well or only drinks? If so what would you recommend Saya?"

Faithe looked up as Jace entered at with a wrenching motion jerked her scythe free of the table before slinging it at her back and stepping back into the shadows to hide her embarassment at her outburst. "I think, much as I am loathe to admit it, a deal of some kind is in order," she looked at the Shieldmarshal and asked, "do you agree?"

Faithe may not be the sharpest one around but she knew a perfect opportunity when she saw it. She may want to end the ghoul but it had a really good reason to work with them now. Faithe quickly brought her scythe out and interposed it between the two, stepping out of the shadowed corner as she did, and said sharply, "Mexerius, don't give him a reason to end you in self defense!"

"Since your lawyer is selling you out wouldn't it be safer to dismiss him and help us instead?" She tried to catch the ghoul's eyes as she said, "I may not like you, I may prefer to kill you, but at least I am honest about it. I think we can work with you on this but not if you keep him," she gestured at the dhampir, "as your lawyer since he is so intent on selling you out like this."

Faithe looked at Xanviar as she shifted back into the shadows and gave him a confused look. "Um, ok, I'm pretty sure he'd have just been killed by anyone else who caught him so either he didn't get caught or we're talking about two different things." She made a gesture with her hand to continue as she said, "Explain."

Faithe knew she wasn't the brightest person around. She knew that she was about as smart as most people and that meant she realized her limitations, especially when it came to figuring out what people really meant. She wore her heart on her sleeve as the saying goes but not really because then I would be easily killed. Despite this she could only stare in incredulity as the lawyer went for an insanity plea deal. It wasn't that she didn't understand it as a means to reduce a sentence but more because the ghoul had done nothing to imply insanity, quite the opposite really, and she knew it showed cunning in needling her just as far as it could get away with and not provoke her into ending it's miserable unlife.

Faithe's eyes stared out at the lawyer from her shadowy corner as she tried to understand the reason for trying something so obviously stupid. Finally she just looked at the dhampir and realized that despite being fairly handsome he was an idiot. She looked at the ghoul and actually felt some sympathy for it all of a sudden. She may have thought they should kill it on sight but even she had her limits.

Faithe looked at the ghoul and asked, "Um, Mexerius?" She waited for the ghoul to look in her direction a moment and then continued, "Are you sure he's your lawyer and not a mental patient?" Her gaze shifted back to the supposed lawyer again and then she said, "If so that sucks, I thought he was kind of handsome before." She shifted from the shadows enough that her pale shoulders were clearly visible as she shrugged and just looked confused.

Without any idea what they should tell him Faithe simply shrugged from her shadowy corner and said, "He needs to know what we know if he wants to defend the murderous monster, tell him everything we know." She would do it herself but, sadly, Faithe had lost track of everything, she never was particularly good at the more intellectual pursuits.

Faithe was content to let Daerokh lead things at this point as she just wasn't made to handle recall and knowing which questions to ask. Sweet talk someone, intimidate them, those she could do. With that in mind Faithe remained in place as her companion dealt with this...lawyer. She had to admit the dhampir wasn't quite what she expected, granted she'd never met one before, and he certainly wasn't the devil she half expected to see.

From her dim corner of the room Faithe looked the dhampir, Mr Xanviar, over curiously. She wondered if he worked for that bastard Jerrad or someone else. She figured that many would find this dhampir a bit disturbing, pale as he was, but it didn't bother Faithe any, in fact she found him almost, but not quite, handsome to look at. Faithe didn't realize just how distracted she had become as Daerokh continued his explanation. If she hadn't been she might have wondered when Joie would arrive.

Faithe let Daerokh ask the question for the moment, she had no need to just yet, though she did give him a rather pointed look as she said, "You are a ghoul, of course you've killed before, you kill and you eat, not necessarily in that order," her tone was matter of fact, "it is what you are."

When the ghoul revealed his lawyer's identity Faithe said, "A dhampir, and one who likely works for his parent. very interesting." She was thoughtful then as she considered and said, "if it wasn't you then who was it?"

Faithe walked along with the Shieldmarshal and ghoul to an interrogation room and stood staring at the undead thing for a minute or two before she final said, "So you have been murdering scribes in the city, this we know, and we know it is connected with a certain substance called Bloodstone," Faithe focused her gaze on the ghoul's and asked, "Why?"

Because I as a player can't quite remember, what questions are we looking to ask of the ghoul?

Faithe's eyes narrowed as her voice filled with hate as she said in a deadly voice, "One of these days Jerrad will find me behind him as well. Likely when his head is looking up at me from the ground." She laughed wickedly, "If you somehow see him again tell him I said 'Boo!'" With that Faithe ceased speaking and faded deeper into the shadows.

When the warden came to tell them the room was set up Faithe shook her head and said, "No, come with me. I need someone to make sure I don't miss any questions." Her words halted a moment before she said, "I'd imagine whatever lawyer he has coming might be able to just appear int he room. Probably a devil of some kind."

Faithe's gaze turned to the ghoul and said, "Joie may believe you count as a person but I do not." From the darkness of the shadow her distorted form smiled viciously, "I will be pleased with the fact you will be looking over your shoulder for the rest of your miserable existance because you will know that one day I will be in the shadows behind you and on that day you will end." There was an almost cruel tone in her voice as she anticipated the fear it would suffer now, "You will never know when, you will never know where, and you will never know which meal will be your last." She laughed evily then and a glint of light reflected off of the blade of her scythe, "Enjoy the rest of your pethetic existance."

Faithe was standing in the deepest patch of shadow she could find as she kept an eye on the ghoul. She was impressed it could still detect her in the dim spot but if this bothered her she didn't let it show.

After a time of silence there was a voice coming down the stairs saying something about sending Ranek home. The problem was she wasn't quite sure who Ranek was, the drunk or the ghoul. Faithe looked at the Shieldmarshal and said, "We found that," she gestured at the cell with the ghoul in it with her pale hand which slipped out from the shadows so it could be seen, "while performing our investigation and brought it in as a suspect. I doubt it will talk to us about anything of importance and we would be better off destroying it. but I have been overruled."

Faithe eyed the ghoul curiously as he spoke to her and she considered if she really wanted to go down this rabbit hole or not. It didn't take the pale woman long to decide that she did. She shifted back into the shadows, her form blurring slightly, and asked, "And just where would we have met before?"

Faithe noticed tha tthe ghoul was continuing to stare at her. Unlike she expected though it didn't seem to her that it was viewing her as food but as somethingelse. It was very disconcerting and she felt a tempation to just take it's head off and end it but she withheld herself given where they were.

Finally deciding she needed to ask Faithe looked at the ghoul as he paced and stared at her, "What is it about me that fascinates you so ghoul?"

When they reached the station Faithe was a bit disappointed the ghoul didn't give her a reason to strike it down. The fact that the Shieldmarshal didn't seem worried about their ability to hold the ghoul and so Faithe assumed that they could. As they put the ghoul in the cell Faithe was ready in case it resisted them.

Faithe remained vigilant as she watched for the ghoul to escape it's restrained position but she noticed nothing else about it's glowering.

Faithe was prepared to jump in and save Joie if this went as bad as she suspected it would but it seemed the young woman knew what she was doing. Having managed to contain the ghoul for the moment Faithe approached with her scythe at the ready for when the thing got free, and made sure to move into shadows near to it so that it would have more difficulty hitting her if it got free.

Eep! Didn't think I'd gone so long without a post.
[auote=Dragoncat]Whoof... sorry to have kept you all waiting!

Don't you mean meow?

Faithe stayed with her companions as they made their way down and then into the tunnels. The stench was astounding, the smell of things rotting, and she was sure it was the foul stench of undeath that made it all the worse. The only good thing was it was easily dark enough that he felt the shadows begin to take her, envelope her in their cool embrace, and she kept her scythe ready and eyes sharp as they went ever closer to their foul quarry.

When they heard the wet coughing sound Faithe nodded in agreement with Tuco and said very softly, "I believe you are right." Her scythe at the ready and the bones comprising her armor mended from the previous battle Faithe prepared to advance around the corner to where the apparent killer lurked as quietly as possible.

Meh, it was a chance at least.

Faithe grunted in pain as the zombie slammed her with it's fists but she didn't let that slow her down. She lashed out with her scythe once again.

This time she was not to be denied as her heavy weapon lashed out and tore through the zombie's body with ease dealing significant damage to the undead thing.

Yes, he has a lot more time in this one, even if only in cut scenes, and they have expanded on his motivations a fair bit. He seems much more human in this one and the why of what he will likely till do is much better supported thus far.

Mind you we only just get out of Midgar at the end of this part. Part two will likely pick up around the same point and I imagine go through a certain significant and tragic event if not further still. I get a sneaking suspicion that we will make it up just to or through the initial events at the crater in part 2.

I also enjoy that they expand on the previous war with Wutai and make it have more significance to the overall plot as well as made AVALANCHE a bigger thing than it originally was.

Lol! I like that!

The game was freaking amazing and I love that they have given themselves a way to change parts of the story to keep people from knowing for certain what is going to happen in later parts of the story without screwing up the existing plot. I won't go into more detail than that about what they did though I will say that I thought it was just strange at first until I realized the genius of what they did.

Pleased to see her scythe is sharp enough to tear through a chair, but not so pleased that she hit a chair rather than the zombie, Faithe lashed out once more with her weapon at the walking corpse before her after shifting slightly to put it between her and Alorea.
scythe: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 4 + 2 = 82d4 + 4 ⇒ (3, 3) + 4 = 10
Yet again she missed the zombie as the thing luckily stumbled to one side like a drunken master and she cleaved another chair in twain!

I keep this up the table legs will be getting sliced off!
