Back Story:

Ethan born into poverty. His mother was a doxy who traded with the river-folk and sailors of a small town in the River Kingdoms, from which his last name was taken as is the custom in the kingdom, if no father stepped forward to claim the child then the child takes the last name Rivers.

His was not an easy childhood. By age 10 he was running with a small gang, stealing food and running for the local gangs, by 12 he killed his first man, and by 14 he has seen things that would make the most war toughened veteran cringe. When he was 15 his mother died of the pox, leaving him nothing to live on and soon enough no where to live. He learned quickly that if you weren’t quick on your feet, soon you’d be on your back.

At age 17 he signed up for his first contract with the Smiling Devils, a low grade mercenary troop. A short 6 months later, after a series of brutal conflicts in the even ongoing border war, the Smiling Devils were decimated once again leaving Ethan with nothing and no where to go. It was in the small town of Whitewater that he found his first break.

A local river ferry was looking for strong hands to troll the barge up and down the river, tough work, but honest. It was here he met Perry, who would soon grow to be his closest friend and loyal companion. For 10 years they poled their barge taking all sorts of travelers up and down the waterways, from priests to thugs and every flavor in between. Ethan and Perry would land most nights in shanty towns that dot the shore and drink their coin away, singing roaring songs and bedding tavern girls.

Reaching 30, Ethan started thinking it was time to hang up his pole and plan for retirement. That was when Perry came to him with an offer. A noble from the far off city of Magnimar wanted to hire them to travel with him along the waterway, from the River Kingdom all the way to the fabled City of Monuments. Upon reaching the city safely, he is willing to pay a sum of 100g each. 100g! A fabulous sum, more than either had thought to see in their entire life.

They set out the following week along with Lord Dryden, second son of a merchant Lord in Magnimar, a small cadre of six guard and a local priest. The young Lord was about what you’d expect, a stuffy peacock out to prove his worth the daddy and lording his money over everyone else. Countless times they’d had to beat off muggers and bandits after the Lord has dipped too far in his cups and bragged about the goods they were carrying.

Over the next six month they’d lost 4 of the six guards and had to rehire from the local towns. Ethan felt his will die the day they had to bury Perry under a riverside willow tree. He had taken a cough from the cold and then a brush with some wolves had further weakened him until he finally gave out one night in his sleep.

Six long months followed Perry’s death as Ethan fell further and further into despair. No longer did he care about the money at the end, he only wanted the end so he could drown his sorrow and be left alone. Finally after near 60 weeks of travel they arrived in the City of Monuments. As Ethan looked at the squalor and garbage in the gutters and the poor wretches living and feeding off the city’s underbelly, the Underbridge they called it here, for once he was glad Perry was not here to see this, it would break his heart.

It was at the doors that Ethan once again felt the crush of reality upon his soul. So taken was he in the city that he had lagged behind the wagon and his group. They soon passed the through the gates, a mere ten strides ahead of him. When his turn came and the guards questioned him he called out to Lord Dryden, whose life he had saves countless time, a man with whom he had traveled uncountable miles with, only to be ignored. Ethan called louder, then tried to force his way toward the young lord. Pain exploded in his back as the guard stuck him across the spine with the half of his polearm.

As Ethan lay upon the ground he had a moment of clarity as he saw the young Lord turn his head slightly and a smile upon his lips. He was never going to be paid. One was or another the merchant was going to forfeit their deal. All his pain, all the traveling, Perry’s death. None of it mattered to the merchant.

After spending the night in a cell, and nearly the remainder of his coin in fines, Ethan was released with a warning to ‘Obey the Law’. For days he drifted from tavern to tavern. Short of a week later, after winning a nice pouch of gold at dice, Ethan bought the house a round to celebrate.

Midway into the night, and more than midway into his coin, Ethan noticed a stranger in the seat next to him. He was struck dumb. This man looked like a young Perry. Even down to the twice broken, still crooked nose. Soon this stranger caught his stare and struck up a conversation. For the rest of his days, when asked, Ethan would never remember the topics they talked about, only that it felt like being home again.

Long into the night they sat, sharing tales, and ale. Such was Ethan’s joy that he did something that he hadn’t done is a long while. He sang. Now his voice would never win over a lady nor calm a room, but he could rouse a tavern with merriment when the spirit filled him, and this young man next to him matched him drink for drink, tale for tale. When Ethan began singing, he was the first to join in. Soon the rafters rang with voices and the floor echoed with stomped feet.

At the end of the night Ethan and his new friend carried each other toward the bunkhouse they were both staying in. as the stranger dropped Ethan into his bunk he slumped into the chair next to the bed and spoke words that for the rest of his life Ethan would never forget.

“You have a good soul my friend, a soul after my own. Let go of your sorrow and your pain. You have a gift, the gift of bringing joy and merriment. What more could be asked of a man than a kind heart, a good soul, and the love of joy? From here on you and me, we’re pals ya hear. And I take care of my pals so they can help others.” With that he lain a hand on Ethan’s shoulder. A soft warmth spread through his body, not unlike the first swallow of a good alcohol on a cold day.

When he awoke in the morning Ethan looked for his newest friend. For three days he looked and search and asked around. No one knew anything about him.

One night as he sat on his bunk, saddened at this newest loss, he noticed something new in his pack. Pulling it out revealed a palm sized disc of silver, about half as thick as his hand, and with an etching upon one face of a foaming mug. Scratching his head he thought back trying to remember where he’d seen something like this before. Then it hit him. The priest! The one that traveled with him and Perry. What was it used for? Something about praying.

The more he thought about it the more came back. Cayden Cailean, the lucky drunk. As he thought the name, that feeling of home returned and the disc in his hand grew warm and a sense of purpose entered his mind. He recalled for the first time the words that were spoken to him.

“Now why’d you go a do that? A new life at my age? Adventure is for young men, men with strength in their bones,” he mutters. Then he looked up at the wooden ceiling of the bunkhouse.
“But who am I to argue with a god. I hear you. Spread merriment is it? Just so happens I over heard some workers talking about a new place tonight. The Silver Dragon Tavern.

Personality and Tactics:

Ethan is at best a passable fighter. He relies more hit and move tactics. In battle he prefers to let other, younger, men charge in and then move to support them.

He uses his magic for aiding the party and healing. Very rarely will he use it to cast an offensive spell.
