Texas gamers, how about we arrange a small extreme gaming retreat in Big Bend? That'd rock.

Beautiful country down here....too bad no one lives here ;)

My annual bump.

I can't believe there's no one out here but me.....

No, but Clark has volunteered to critique items in a separate thread like he did last year.

Oh, c'mon. It is the explicit responsibility of both the customer service AND sales teams to both promise the moon to the customer. Especially if the moon only exists outside the realm of modern technical capabilities. I worked web app dev long enough to know that.

Actually what I think I'm seeing is the pre-authorization converting to a charge. Just never saw it happen that way before.

Scarab Sages

Original charge is still showing reversed, but, a new charge for the amount in question posted today, so I think we're square.

Thanks!

Scarab Sages

I'm going to be a little preemptive and assume something went wrong here.

The order shows as "Shipping" and I received an email notice it was shipping, but, when checking my credit card this evening, it is showing the charge for this order was reversed.

Any problems?

Thanks!

Scarab Sages

I'm still looking for gamers anywhere in the area. Marfa, Fort Stockton, Alpine, Ft. Davis, Marathon. Heck, I'll even drive to Van Horn if I have to.

clockwork machines NO construct :P

je till now my watch is still a clockwork machine and it still works without magic...to my knowledge :P

That's kind of disappointing, to me. I was seeing Alkenstar as a source for clockwork creatures, which are constructs, correct?

Scarab Sages

Can anyone recommend a decent resource(s) for fantasy-heavy clockwork/constructs/steampunk ideas/adventures/monsters? I'm not interested in Victorian-flavored pulp stuff, more medieval/fantasy/sorcery oriented.

Scarab Sages

One thing I don't really understand or need clarified for me....

The Campaign Setting states "Alkenstar engineers design intricate clockwork machines..." Clockworks are Constructs. Construct creation requires a ritual, a MAGIC ritual, right?

How does that work in the magic-dead Grand Duchy of Alkenstar?

Or am I showing a level of newbieness here?

Scarab Sages

You city folk oughter come out to the desert sometime ;)

Red ants, scorpions, centipedes, tarantulas, rattlesnakes, mountain lions, bears .... throw in a couple of orcs and goblins and I'll be LARPing ;)

Scarab Sages

Pay day tomorrow. Plus I just got a check for an article I wrote for a wargaming journal. Sounds like I'll be in for a senior patron tomorrow night :)

Scarab Sages

And don't forget about Abebooks and Alibris

Both are great sites for low cost books.

Wow. Sounds like a budding/aspiring writer could actually learn a lot by participating in one of these Open Designs, right?

I can't remember where I read it, but, I seem to remember a suggestion that fractional CR creatures use CR=1 to compute their templated CR.

I don't. I spend a lot of time solitairing my board wargames. I'm only recently returning to the RPG fold and hope to spend a lot of time writing as I become more familiar with the 3.0/3.5 and Pathfinder games.

The nearest gamers I have found are in the Odessa/Midland area. 3 hour drive for me. Most of them are CCG players as near as I can tell. I have found a miniatures club based in Big Spring that meets in Midland on occasion.

Alpine, TX.

We get 6 inches of rain a year.

You don't want to be here that day.

Scarab Sages

Most (all?) of the "Companion" line is written crunch free and specifically for the PLAYERS. It's been a couple of months since I cracked the cover on the Campaign Setting, but, I believe it is free of crunch as well. This makes it REAL easy to use the world for any rules you want to, really.

Scarab Sages

I like a lot of crunch. Don't have much problems with canon. Have a ton of problems paying to keep up with canon. Golarion, as pointed out, doesn't have much canon going, yet. It makes it easier to integrate the world. At this point, I don't have to worry a lot about running a home brewed adventure followed by an off-the-shelf adventure and the two providing conflicting story lines or history.

The retailer I spoke with (before placing a preorder with him, I wanted to make sure I wouldn't be waiting until November for it to be filled). He felt that although the initial preorder demand was high, the distributor network was sufficiently stocked to meet it. I preordered two days before release, and got my shipping notice the day after release.

My book is sitting in Mesquite, TX waiting for UPS to get it way out here to the middle of nowhere, sometime tomorrow.

I don't know what Amazon is doing with their preorders. It doesn't sound like they're handling it well, though.

Scarab Sages

Haven't received it yet, but finally got my shipping notice from coolstufinc.com. Should have it by next Tuesday. :)

Moorluck wrote:

How many times a day are we talking here?

what level play? I would bet that a single item with those powers would make a tempting artifact to build a campaign arc around but thats just me.

The character initially started out as a fallen paladin. I had issues trying to wedge him into Pathfinder Beta rules, though.

So, I switched him to a fallen cleric. Now Lawful Evil, used to be Lawful Good.

I guess it would make a good story arc to have the party pursuing the villain to recover the artifact.

(Originally, a paladin inquisitor of Iomedae comes to enjoy his work a little to much and is defrocked by her. Now he seeks to destroy her and become a god himself)

Times per day? I hadn't thought that far, yet, actually.

A further issue is trying to find a neutral/lawful clerical power/spell that would compel someone to answer questions. Charm person, suggest and their ilk are all arcane, not divine. So far, all the power of these items focus on depriving Fort and Will from the victim and fortify the wielder's.

Scarab Sages

OK....so now I'm kinda stumped.

I looked over my notes and decided what I wanted the staff to accomplish was way overboard.

So, I'm thinking perhaps a magic set is more appropriate. The idea is the set could be used by Lawful clerics.

Vestments of the Inquisitor

Staff of Righteousness
Symbol of Fear (CL6)
Magic Weapon, Greater (CL5)

All chaotic creatures within 60' must save or suffer fear.

Robes of the Confessor
Discern Lies (CL4)
Eagle's Splendor (CL2)

Wearer may tell if subject is knowingly telling a lie
Wearer gains +4 to Diplomacy, Bluff and Intimidate

Amulet of Truth
Symbol of Persuasion (CL6)
Zone of Truth (CL2)

Subject must save vs. Will or be compelled to answer questions.

Scourge of the Inquisitor
Bestow Curse (CL3)

-6 to Will

Scarab Sages

*DMs who game with their girlfriend/wife in between sessions using the same campaign world and characters, robbing the rest of the party of valuable atmosphere.

"Honey, is this the same wizard I ran into last night? We can skip him, guys, he doesn't have anything we need..."

*The guy who ALWAYS has to play the mysterious dark monk ninja assassin with Shurikens of Bad-Assery +10 and hide in the corners with his arms folded in his Black Robe of Midnight Invisibility while the rest of the party does the majority of the grunt role-playing work.

Scarab Sages

Thanks for the input, guys.

I'll try and work it up this afternoon and post it here for comments.

Scarab Sages

I've got an idea for a magic item for a Pathfinder campaign I want to write. Its a staff. But, I don't want it to simply be a spell container.

Any reason I can't simply design it as a wondrous item that is coincidentally a staff?

Scarab Sages

But, I can see your argument for possibly three opposed checks. I'd be interested to hear from more experienced Pathfinder GMs.

Scarab Sages

Brian Showers wrote:

If this assumption isn't correct, how do you adjudicate the different opposed rolls when all you want to do is just detect someone's presence?

My initial reaction is there would be only one opposed roll.

I would first calculate which sense the detector has the best chance of detecting with given the existing environmental conditions, then, calculate which detection method the detection target is most vulnerable to. And roll with those numbers as the opposed check.

You might be thinking of Aurora's Whole Realm Catalog (awesome book!) but it doesn't have a lot in the way of furniture in it. I can totally stock a kitchen with cookware and dishes. buy the sheets and pillows and blankets for my beds, and lots of lovely lamps and accessories for decorating ... but they skipped the actual furniture ::laughing::

Yep....that was what I was thinking of.

Scarab Sages

I seem to remember a book, as well. A Volo's guide, perhaps? It was definitely something that had the look and feel of Forgotten Realms, IIRC.

Scarab Sages

Aren't the "Guides" oriented more to players than GMs? That maybe why it disappoints those of us expecting more crunch.

Scarab Sages

Wow, Jared. I think that's actually well written.

My only concern/critique would be whether that could all be played out in a 4 hour time limit.
