Official Pathfinder SRD planned?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

I'm aware of (and fully support) the fan-made SRD but I'm wondering if an official one will be forthcoming from Paizo?

No, I don't want it so that I can cheap out of buying the book -- I've got the book on order and will buy the PDF tomorrow.

I'm making a CRPG and am interested in using the rules improvements that Pathfinder RPG made to 3.5. In order to do that I'd need an official SRD that clearly defines its contents as Open Game Content (as well as include the OGL in the product with an updated Section 15 that credits the Pathfinder SRD, of course). It could be an addendum to the existing 3.5 SRD I suppose (in which case I'd have to credit both the 3.5 SRD and Pathfinder SRD) or an outright replacement (and I'd have to determine if the 3.5 SRD would have to be referenced in Section 15 or if referencing the Pathfinder SRD alone covers it).

I'm also aware that any CRPG would not be permitted to use Pathfinder RPG Product Identity. Though I haven't the rulebook yet, even if there is a statement in it that says anything not PI is Open Game Content I'm worried that I'll slip up and include PI -- hence a separate SRD would be very welcome.

Anyhow, any feedback is welcome. Thank you very much!

Yes, there will be one. It will go live on paizo.com sometime tomorrow.

Wow, amazingly quick response! Thank you very much, I didn't think it'd be so soon (if ever).

Did I mention you all are some of my favorite people right now?

Seriously I like you all more than my son's cat, and that's not something I say to many people (stupid cat pissed on the carpet again...).

I know! I saw your post, went to look up the thread where Gary announced this elsewhere on the forums, and by the time I looked again Gary had already replied to you! The guy's a monster! A post-monster even!

Eeep, there was a thread already? I did a search for SRD and saw some references to the fan-made SRD, a thread in the Alpha boards about the SRD, etc. but didn't see his announcement. =/ My bad, I really did try to make sure I wasn't re-hashing stuff. =)

Very curious to see the SRD.

Very curious indeed...

Can we get the URL that it will be at?

And will it have standardized URLs or a bunch of random/php garbage?

The human-readable URLs of d20srd.org proved to be a critical feature for me, that's why I'm still using it despite the plethora of decent Pathfinder versions.

very true. the craigslist of d&d.

hopefully, it will work fine even if you can't load images because of a weak connection.

While I'd love to see a nicely formatted, fully linked SRD like d20srd.org I'd also love one that just has links to .rtf's (or some other file) like at the official 3.5 SRD.

Those .rtf's (like the monster ones that contain multiple monsters A-Ag, etc.) are great because I can write a parser on them easily that will strip out the stats and use them to seed an XML file (to be used as input to my CRPG and fulfill the requirement that Open Game Content be made available in a human-readable format).

But if that's not feasible I can certainly manage the nicely formatted one too. I'm just happy we're getting one!

It's going to be good. Ross has put a LOT of effort into this.

It's not just a bunch of rtf files.

[edit] It won't have any monsters in it until the Bestiary, though.

So between this, the Core Rulebook PDF going live and the constant traffic generated by GenCon and the Core Rulebook release ... exactly when do ya'll think the server's will overload and shut down ;)

10:01 a.m. Pacific time. Or maybe a bit before as everyone wears out their F5 keys in anticipation...

There's going to be a lot of keyboards clacking -- and cracking -- around that time ;-)

Yep, I expected that. And that reminds me -- I've got to order that too!

I may put up rtf and/or pdf versions as static links on http://www.d20pfsrd.com as soon as we have everything updated. It's trivial to do in Google Sites, which the site is hosted on.

When the bestiary comes online will there be pictures? Thats one kind of bummer about the d20SRD is he doesn't have scratch for artwork. Even some low Q versions would be cool.

If the pictures are released as open content (which I suspect they will be) they will be on the pathfinder srd I'm running. Also, all of the monsters from the bonus bestiary are there now and I have an editor who is going to be back-converting many of the 3.5 release open content paizo monsters onto the site. Check back over the next few days and hopefully you should see some stuff getting added (link in earlier post).

I certianly wouldn't begrudge Paizo for keeping their art proprietary. I think it would be unusual if they didn't; art is one of the things that sells books (especially if your game has an SRD).

Have you ever clicked on the eye icons next to the creature names at d20srd.org?

Our artwork is not Open Gaming Content, and thus will not be part of the document. The only exception will be a couple of diagrams of play, which have been reworked to remove our IP.

Will there be an online art gallery which fan SRDs/wikis/etc might link to?

Where replacement F5 keys shipped with the hardcover? I think that the least we should expect from Paizo after putting us through this torture...

Liberty's Edge

This was my single biggest concern about Pathfinder RPG, almost from day one. I use the html version(s) of the d20 srd constantly and losing that as a tool was going to make me think twice about Pathfinder. Seriously.

Being able to read a spell description that involves a condition and just click on the condition to be taken to a description of that condition is one of the most useful tools ever dreamed up by gamers.

So what does Paizo do? They listen to the gamer community and put up an html reference document online the same week as the release of the the final game.

PAIZO EFFING RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(for those that stumble across this thread and haven't yet found the reference document: http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/)

As long as the Beastiary addition is similarly cross referenced (clicking a spell-like ability in a stat block to bring up the spell description is perhaps the single most useful thing about html reference docs) I will gladly worship at the altar of Pathfinder to the end of my days!

Liberty's Edge

Now if Paizo wants to really make my every fantasy come true, offer a downloadable offline version of this! ;) One of my usual gaming spots is one of the only wireless black holes for miles around and I'd love a copy on my hard drive!

I think that the PDF is largely there for that :) (it has the same hyperlinks).

Liberty's Edge

Yeah, I know (I have the pdf) but on my mildly old computer it's SO slow. And forget about doing a search of the entire text for anything! That's the glory of the html version...nearly instant results.

I'm know I'm sounding like a whiney (and ungrateful) putz now, so I'll shut up :)

Dear Paizo,

YOU ARE FREAKING AWESOME!

I concur. :D

One question about the SRD, or rather, PRD -- is the prestige class "Pathfinder Chronicler" Product Identity or not? Intuitively by its name it would be, but other than this one reference it is remarkably Product Identity-free (given the size of the work) document. Or is it the case that the class is OGC but the name itself must be changed?

Again, thanks for the wonderful resource!

And one misspelling I found: In the OGL's first section on "Product Identity" the word "section" is spelled as "seection".
