Long ago, in a kingdom far away, there lived a man and his wife. These two were not rich, and indeed, would barely scrape by the cold winter months in their small farm with their child, who they had named Eric. During Eric's tenth winter, their luck had finally run out. No food in the pantry, the nearest village unwilling to lend them any further aid (as their generosity had been stretched to the limit as is), surely this would be the winter they would all starve to death.
They lucked out.
A travelling scholar offered them a grand sum of gold, enough to buy food for the winter, and pay off their debts, if only they would provide him lodging and work space for the winter. The Man and his Wife readily agreed, as it was the answer to their prayers.
Throughout the winter, the scholar slowly noticed how intelligent Eric appeared to be. Though he seemed quite shy, he asked what language the Scholar's strange books were written in, as they didn't match the letter's his Mother and Father had taught him. The scholar claimed it was Draconic, Eric asked to learn it, and the scholar agreed, not believing the boy would be able to learn it by the end of the winter. Shockingly, Eric learned the basics in a week.
At winters end, the Scholar approached the boy's parents, and told them that he was in fact a wizard, from the distant citadel of Maker's Rock, and that he would like to take Eric with him as he went back. They originally declined, but Eric chose to go with the Wizard, eventually forcing his parents to relent and allow him to become somebody of importance.
