Glad you're liking it! I also just started Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse; I'm not too far in but it's pretty great so far.

Also, am I bad person for being disappointed that Alice didn't teleport with the technician?

"Hey, ugly!" Ellena shouts, trying to draw the automaton's attention and give Alice a chance to catch her breath. "Over here!"

Spotting what she hopes is a hole in the things defenses, she leaps neatly through and around, dancing under its outstretched arms and almost collapsing bodily into one of the fleeing... technicians? Scientists? Wizards?

On the train ride back from the holidays I picked up Three Parts Dead, by Max Gladstone. It's been an excellent read so far, and strikes me as very Zeitgeist-ey. I highly recommend it.

@YBD - I'm torn between feeding Fabian 2000gp worth of magic items, or letting that come up naturally during play. On one hand, it makes for a nice bit of characterization. On the other, I'm not sure we'll have access to all that much magical loot that the government will accept as broken-in-battle, and I can always bank what we do find (and no-one wants) for later. Thoughts?

Otherwise, will be picking up a cold iron dagger (8gp) and a pistol if I can afford it. Were we using Commonplace or Emerging Firearms? The player's guide doesn't specify.

Face down on the hardwood table, she murmurs "Deeps, where's Efrem when you need him..."

She raises her head to stare blearily at Miselle. "Money? Oh... that's who's hurt by the factories burning, but who does it help?"

To avoid an incident? But..." She swallows. "Something really bad is happening with this. Bad enough for Gale to offer her help. Bad enough for someone to try to kill Nevard. So... maybe we should read them first? Just, you know, to not make the Chief Inspector have to choose between solutions and politics?"

Huh, I've always just rolled perception checks for my players by default.

In other news, Ellena has leveled. Figured the poor girl is level three, she should probably put some points into Sense Motive. Otherwise, picked up Whirling Defense as her Sword Art and used her feat to pick up the Daunting Gladiator Sphere talent - it was that or Bloodied Skeptic, which I may wind up picking up at level 7 anyway.

Edit: Oh, and Fabian can talk now - telepathically, to his wielder. He also eats magic items.

And he's hungry.

Ellena drops to her stomach and squeezes under a fallen hardwood beam, exhaling deeply and giving silent thanks to all the old spirits who'd turned their heads when teenaged Ellena had wished for a more, erm, 'prominent' figure.

Once she's through, she turns and guides the Doctor down through the splinters.

Oddly, despite having all the points in acrobatics and being dex based Ellena is better off with Fort as well.

Ellena takes a moment, looking over the doctor with a critical eye. She fastens a few loose buckles and tucks scraps of cloth (torn from a hankerchief - a gift from a boy who turned out not to like losing) in between bits of medal and the doctor's equipment. That done, she sends him out ahead before going herself.
