Backstory:
Mordan never seemed to be in the right place at the right time. At least, that's how it always felt to him. Always passed over for assignments, pushed off for veterans, or forgotten in his mediocrity. If he was honest with himself (a very paladin like trait he has yet to master) he would recognize the true reason behind this is his own lack of ambition or drive. He could have volunteered for that skirmish in Varisia, or demanded to participate in the pilgrimage to Osirion. In truth, he just sat back and let the winds of fate take him where they would. Unfortunately for him, they didn't take him. Anywhere. Years went by, and Mordan became grey-haired and disenfranchised. Disillusioned and cynical. All the while failing to see the root cause of his median life was his own inaction. Dreams of smiting evil in the name of Iomedae, of punishing the heathens and healing the innocent, seem to have finally been crushed under the weight of apathy. Still, while his drive never surfaced, his faith always held him fast. He could feel Iomedae's love, he could see her palpable power when he closed his eyes in his sparse quarters. And yet, he always assumed She would show him the way. Never understanding that sometimes, the Goddess helps those who help themselves.

With a forced retirement quickly approaching, he asked that he be allowed to travel to Kenabres to see the greatest threat to the world, to at least see what he might have had a hand in fighting had things gone differently. Plus, wasn't there a festival or something coming up?
