As a youth, Susty travelled the world with her parents on the trading vessel, Noon star. Dusty was a perceptive child, but lacked focus and ambition. She saw many lands but didn't really take them in. The ship was her world but even that was beyond her interest. She liked to read, that was it.Then came the night it all changed.
Her father had taken in a cargo while docking in Osirian, for delivery to absalom. It was a large crate, closed with chains. Her father was reluctant, but the pay was excellent, as mother said. The first night out it emerged. First a storm rose up out of nowhere, and then, one by one the crew was devoured by a thing, drinking their life blood. It took a while before the crew realised it was being attacked, and by then half the crew and passengers were dead.
Dusty's father gather her, her mother and the rest of the crew on the sterncastle of the ship, then he steered back to Osirian. The creature animated the dead crew and attacked with them. When a crewman fell next to her, Dusty seized his scimitar and struck at the zombie that had done the deed. The fight went on, then the author of this horrible night came itself. Dusty's fell, her life drained away and his father attacked the creature with a renewed frenzy. It just laughed. Then snapped his neck. As it turned to Dusty and the last few, despairing crew, and then a fire lit inside h Dusty.
"Help me" she cried as he struck at the creature. His scimitar suddenly exploded into flame as he slashed at it, causing it to scream in pain. Then a firery angel appeared, causing all the zombies to fall to ash. The creature fled, leaping overboard, shreiking in agony. The angel turned to her, with sad eyes and she heard a voice. "Will you let this stand?"
"No!"
"Then become what you are now destined to be. Destroy those things that twist life and death into undeath. Seek them ouit. Do this is Saranrae's name."
Then a bright light blinded all. When their vision cleared, Dusty and the survivors were on the shore watching the Noon Star crash against rocks. It was dawn. Shet felt the crews eyes on her as she open the sea chest near her. In the distance there was a small fishing village.
Holding the scimitar she collected a portion of the gold in the chest and looked at them. "take what you need. Goodbye."
As she walked away one of them yelled "do you seek your parents killer?"
Dusty, now the fireseeker turned, a fell smile on hers face. "Yes. And all those things like it."
She walked into the brightening dawn.
