I have to agree with an earlier post when it was mentioned that a PC should only be able to multi-class if they have in game experience. I once had a PC that was forced multi-class by the DM, mostly because of the PC background that I came up with. I was a Bard that came from a long line of pristess, and apon the death of my mother I became the new high pristess.

I dont know of any website but here are a few for you.

longsword = broadsword (english think king author) or Qi jain (chinese)
shortsword = gladius (roman sword) or wakizashi (japanese)
Dagger = dirk or tanto (japanese)
greatsword = claymore or odachi (japanese)

Thats all I could think of off the top of my head. I will post more if I can think of any. I dont know oof any for armor.

Yes I have, its actually post in the GM Kill Board thread. The player was extermly annoy and no one in the group liked her. She threw a fit when she didnt get her way and all armor and weapons that were found she seemed to think she should get. She was a cleric. She would also game for like 5-10 minutes or so then stop and seemed to think that we should all stop and do what ever she wanted to, then would get upset when we would continue to game and not give her any experience for the battle that they were in with out her. So one day after the fought a drow cleric that had a circlet that allowed the user to talk with dead. So she put it on and tried to talk to the drow. That was the last time she played so I had her char stay there and argue with her for along time eventually starving to death. The rest of the group decided they wanted to kill her, so I came up with a f#@@ed up curse and as punishment for killer her cleric Lolth turned her elf into a drider and the party took great pleasure in killing her.

The way I have always worked it in the campaigns that I have run is that when detect magic is cast any magical items light up, so with the way I do, if an invisible creature is wearing magical items then the caster will be able to see them but not the creature but he will be able to tell were it is.

The ruler of Uruz, however, did not share the gnome's sense of humor. Once his personal guards began acting strangely even before the end of their first 8-hour duty shift, the artificer was summoned to the castle and forced under torture to explain himself. The ruler thereafter arrested the gnome's family and confiscated his possessions on charges of treason, subversion of the city guard, sedition and insurrection.

The circlets were removed from the guards by the local priesthood and promptly placed upon the heads of the gnome's family, whom the ruler kept in his castle for his own amusement. The gnome had one leg amputated at the hip and the other at the knee, with his forearms removed as well, forcing him to hobble around the castle like the ruler's beloved 3-legged bull-dog from his youth.

When the ruler grew tired of the gnome-dog family, they were sewn into large canvas bags weighed with heavy stones and thrown into the moat.

Why such an item continues to exist as anything but a prototype error that the artificer forgot to destroy is beyond me.

FWIW,

Rez

Its hard to be tried of treason when Uruz is a Dwarven communtiy and the creator is a Gnome. And Uruz is build inside a mountain so there is no moat.

You know that's illegal, yes?

I know but its the only way I can get ahold of some of the older books. You can also purchase pdf versions of the books from rpgshop.com at much lower prices than buy them as actual books.

I would have to say disgusting

I believe in this case its the wieght and not the size the makes an ape a large size creature. Anything that 5'6" and 400lbs is large as far as im concerened.

Kurocyn wrote:

50 coins = 1 lb...

While a decent baseline for handling the weight, that's still 50 coins though. And last time I had 50 coin in my pocket, it wasn't exactly covert.

Drac's implementation of the magical coin-purse does solve the problem, but I personally wouldn't just hand out such items. Issues like this are ideal situations to see how a PC/player would solve the problem in-character.

-Kurocyn

I didnt just hand out these items, I made it as an item they could purchase at a specialty shop. 2 versions regular for 50pg or the chain covered one for 65pg, chain covered one makes it harder for thieves to cut.

Aubrey the Malformed wrote:
Don't you enforce equitable splitting of treasure? I don't even understand how such a situation can arise - the PCs should be given items in line with a fair split of value.

I try to allow the player to split up the treasure the best way they can think of on there own which isnt a problem, the problem comes when she gets upset cause she doesnt get everything she wants.

See my post before yours. I'm big on encumbrance. In fact, I don't buy that whole "first set of clothing doesn't have weight" crud. I Don't buy it.

Finally, others that agree with me! ^ ^ I personally enjoy keeping tabs on my gear's location/condition. It helps me get a better feel for the character and reinforces my knowledge of what my PC can do.

There are few things more annoying that players who don't even know what their PCs are carrying, let alone how they can make use of it.

On the topic of weight, does anyone else factor in/penalize PCs for the ammount of coin they carry? In my last game, I started seeing money changers before we'd leave town/as we came into town. 20 PP is much easier to handle that 200 GP. Is there a decent ruling on check penalties for this? Or does anyone else do this ammount of book-keeping?

-Kurocyn

I actually do keep track of comdition of weapons and armor and my players know it, thats why they make sure to state that they are repairing badly damaged weapons and armor after a bad fight, they even salvage the armor from whom ever they fight for useable pieces. I also keep track of how much wieght in coins they are carring. But do to the fact that they dont always have the option of going to a money changer, I created the coin purse of holding. A smaller version of the bag of holding, a small belt pouch that could hold up to 5lb worth of coins.

if they have a computer download limewire and just done load the books

I do use carying capacity, but I also allow all my players to have a lesser bag of holding as part of there basic gear. I love the idea of making the circlet make them act like a pig, that would be just funny. She has already been permently delt with though, everyone just got sick and tired of her so they had a group vote and we killed off her char and kicked her out of the group. She was causing alot more problems then just being a equipment hog.

Kurocyn wrote:

With how many people suggested carrying capacity, I'm beginning to wonder if I'm the only one who actually uses it regardless. o.O?

Drac said that the player openly admitted to being a item hog. Personally, I think that the OP is justified with the use of a cursed item or twelve.

Save for EXTREME role-play purposes, there is absolutely NO justifiable reason for a cleric to be as such. I'm all for a player that wants to make use of items and collect on found treasure/gear, but when done out of sheer greed like this, I draw the line.

Were I the DM, that player would be looking at ever-worsening conditions. Grave-robbing charges, cursed items, hauntings, city thieves/bandits coming in the night... I could go on.

Might I suggest a tweak to your cursed item though? Have the cursed item make her act like a pig instead of a dog. Utter neglection of personal hygene, rapidly developing narcissism, and eventaully squealing instead of talking.

To justify the item's creation (if utter malice isn't enough), let it be the creation of a somewhat "off" ruler who found a new use for criminals/slaves. Pig-minded jesters for his court.

While I love your in-game solution, sometimes you need to speak with a player in private about their behavior and how it effects the other players and the game experience as a whole. If you are opposed to crossing this line right away, you might find that everything the character gets needs to be cursed before he gets the message. It would be interesting to see what happens if someone else were to wear the circlet. Perhaps if the curse only works on this particular player he'll get the hint quicker.

This player was talked to about at the start of the campaign right after she said she was like that. All she had to say after the talk was if someone needed somthing she would "loan" it to them. She was a cleric so I also practiced the old rule about them not being allowed to own more than they need, and she had to give her "extra" gear to the church.

As a DM I have had to deal with that one person that wanted to keep any and all weapons and armor that the party found for themselve. I came up with an interesting way of dealing with that person by way of a cursed item. I will discribe it below. I wanted to see how everyone else deals with those pesty equipment hogs.

Circlet of Canine Senses

This simple circlet is made of iron and has the head of a dog etched into the center with 2 rubies on either side. This circlet first came into existence when the ruler of Uruz commissioned a Gnome Wizard to create an item to help the city guards protect the city from the Orc and Goblin tribes that wanted the city and mines for themselves. The Gnome got the inspiration for the circlet from his loyal dog, and decided that it would be better if the guards could sense the intruders before they got to close to the city.

When worn the circlet gives the wear a +6 to all sense checks, Search, Spot, Listen as well as the scent ability.

Unknown to the Ruler of Uruz, the Gnome had a rather odd sense of humor. If worn for more than 6 hours, the circlets true powers come to the surface. The first thing that happened is the wearer goes color blind and can only see in black and white. Then the wearer will start to pick up over dog like habits such as chasing after sticks and balls when thrown, and burring bones, even trying to scratch behind there ears with there feet. The wearer will even believe that their behavior is normal and won’t think anything of it. Lastly the wearer loss the ability to speak normal language but instead will be able to speak with any canine.

Once the 6 hours have passed and the additional affects start to take affect the only way to remove the circlet is with a remove curse spell. The spell will only allow the circlet to be removed, the same thing will happen if the circlet is worn for another 6 hours.

The Whip falls under the exotic weapon feat

We have all seen the one handed man with the hook the has replaced the missing hand, So for your wizard you dont you give him the option to have a some for of apperatous placed over his stump that would allow him to place wands in it and still keep his hand free.

I have nothing in comparision to most of you all this post makes 47 for me. I have a long ways to go before I master the ways of the Jedi

All the Wizard needs to do is take the Still Spell feat which will allow him to cast with out the somatic component and the Eschew Material feat with will allow to cast with out the maerial components. Problem solved. And as for the lossing the tongue just take the Silent spell feat, bye bye verbal component. Another bonus to taking the still spell feat, from my point of view that should cause the arcane spell failure to go away while wearing armor. The reason is the spell failure comes from the fact that the caster connot make the proper somatic movements to cast the spell but if he has the still spell feat then he doesnt need to make the movements therefore the spell failure chance shoulod go away. What is your opinion on the matter.

As far as I can see there 1 of 2 things you can do. First of all you can ask 1 of your 2 cleric to multiclass as a fighter or some other tank class, or the scout could multiclass as barbarian. The only other thing you can do as DM is tell your guys that someone needs to make a new char thats a heavy hitter. You might also have a problem with the fact that you have no arcane casters in the group. Best to luck with what ever you decide to do.

As a DM I prefe using maps and figures. Yes the game does take alittle more time, but when working with a large group its usfull so everyone can see were everyone else is as well as they can see know all will be affected by an area affect spell. I use maps from the mapmage.com site. It allows you to create your own maps, so what I do is I create a Player map that will be used in game then I create a second map that only I can see cause its on my laptop and I use it to mark traps and what not. I find it just makes the game more interesting.

I have two favorite characters.

First one

NG Female Half-Elf Bard/ Cleric/ Dragon Shaman. High Pristess to the dragon deity Aasterinian, Dragon god of Chaos and Trickery.

Second one
CG Half-Dragon Half-Giant Werebear, Psi-Warrior/Soulknife/Pyrokineticist
Had the ability to change between multiply forms. First form basic Humanoid, Second form Humanoid dragon mixture, and of course Third form full mixture with werebear.

First thing I would do is move the Black dragons from the good side to the bad side. I have never heard of a good black dragon. Some races like the lizard folk and the bugbears I would leave as neutral, they wont help either side but will attack either side that gets to near to there area. So maybe you can have the PC try to get the neutral races to join there alliance. I would add some more races to the evil Elfs side, maybe driders of shadow dragons or fang or deep dragons. The PC's would have to be divided up between parties that protect the supply lines and out post and the rest of the PC's would be part of Platoons that attack the underground post held by the evil elfs. Or you can do somthing I did in a campaign and that is to have the PC's find away to seal the underdark from the surface world. That would seal in the evil elfs. Let me know how the campaign goes, it sounds like somthing I might want to do with my group.

The Jester is a Prestige Class for the Bard so unless your Rogue has some lvl's in Bard he wont be able to take it.

Its not nice to cover the Dwarf with Alchemical Shaving Cream while he sleeps. (Alchemical Shaving Cream works without a blade, apply and wipe off, will remove all hair and fur.)

Try giving him a Dire Bat to fly around on, Dragonnel as favored by Paladins, Draconomicon pg 151. Or maybe a SPiked Felldrake, Draconomicon pg 160, Or maybe just give him a riding horse.

can they even properly hold a pick?? or even lift one?? Or do they just use those elongated noses of theres. HAHAHA

I give my players a choice, multiple the damage or pull a card from the Critical Hit Deck

Nicly writen. Lucky for me, as the DM I am more than happy to allow my players to play any race they want, within reason.

My wife and I will be moving to Oak Harbor, Wa in October and we are looking for a game group to join, or some individuals that want to start a group I do have experience as a DM.

Acouple of things. To keep the PC's from learning the spell like one person said might happen. Make it a spell that the caster himself created and all research is in his head. Just for fun I would make him a very old and senile old fool that believes himself to be just another young adventurer, so natuarly he has a realy bad habit of getting himself into more trouble than he can handle, and that is when he summons the PC's.

When it comes to spells I allow my players combine list from different source books as long as the spells are for there class.

Have the party wonder in to a nest of Bonethief's. See who can make it out with the least number of bones stolen. Make sure the cleric isnt a high enough level to regenerate the missing bones. "How far did you say the next town was, and we have to crawl."

Have you thought about putting a backdraw on this feat. For somthing that is as powerfull as this can be, it would make sense to me to say that a person would be fatigued after using this attack. Maybe you can use his Constitution to determin how long or if he even becomes fatigued. Or you can make fatigue part of what happens if he fails his bluff check. Just some food for thought.

Very nice, I do like this new feat, I have a fighter in my group and I know he will like it as well, Lucky for him im the DM, and with some of the things I have them fighting against this would come in handy.

I agree I think Dragon Shaman is probly the bast way to go.

Donovan Vig wrote:

This is going to take a moment to explain, and I apologize in advance for any offense caused...just bear with me.

The party is on a greek mythology/low magic type campaign. They had been together for almost a year in RL. My co-DM and I attacked their ship with harpies. After skirmishing for a few rounds, the harpies set the ship's sails on fire.

Losing the PC's in the resultant smoke, they took a dingy and were swept to the Isle of Minos. several hours of research later, we decided to hit them with mazes, minotaurs, and a huge fiendish bull.

Eventually they come to the crumbled temple of Poseidon, and fight the angry ghost of King Minos himself. Defeating him, they discover the mechanical bull that Daedalus built for him...or more accurately...his wife.

Think apparatus of Kwalish, only a cow. The druid and the wizard both climb inside, and within a few minutes realize that it can actually attack! They then press the green button and a "porthole" opens beneath the tail. Another button, and the cow beging mooing.

Huge fiendish white bull hears mating call, comes to investigate. Needless to say, the two inside the cow were "assaulted" on a very personal level by the fanged, hissing, member of the god cursed beast.

Picture this: giant "snakelike" creature enters through "porthole" and begins snapping. Druid draws dagger (nonmagical) and tries stabbing it. Failing to penetrate DR results in not unpleasant "tickling"...Use imagination.

When the rest of the party opened the machine up, their friends had been skeletonized by some kind of "gooey acidic substance splashed liberally about the insides of the apparatus."

They have never forgiven me, but I set a single session record for soda spitting that night.

Apologies to the offended, though if you were truly offended, you would have stopped before you reached this apology...right?

That is so awsome. I wish I could have been there to see it.

im sticking with 3.5 for awhile.

I bet the egg would make one heck of an omelet. Just food for thought.

Sex in Gore in game is fine as long as it is part of the story line. There is no need for it ever to be in excess. I ussually only use sex as a source of humor, to make the PC's think about what they are doing before they decide to do it. For example, one of my PC's changed into a new suit of armor at the blacksmith shop which was a open shop and just for kicks I said some woman threw her shirt at him, so he decided to follow her. I skippd right to the next morning and told him he cant remember a thing that happened because of the amount of booze that he drank, as he looked around there were several empty bottles on the floor. Then when he decided to look around he relieved that he was in a dorm room at the temple, and the girl he was with was a virgin. Thn he found out he deflowered the daughter of the high pristess. Now he is going crazy trying to get approval from her mom and dad to be in a relationship with her. As for gore I only use it to describe an area they might go into. For example they decided to explore a ancient temple of unknown origins in the underdark, and they came across a large room that has completly covered with remains of hundereds of creature and the ways and doors were covered in what looked like sword marks but made from somthing much larger than any normal sword.

I wanted to start this thread after going over the Design a Villian contest from the RPG Superstar. I want people to talk about the villians that they have created for the PC's to fight against. During my last campaign my DM allowed me to create a villian for my char, as part of my char's background. At the time I was playing a Half-Elf Female Bard who loved to give a Pirate/Slave Trader a very hard time.

Info on the Villian
Name: Nefarious
Race: Human
Age: Unknown Estimated to be mid 60's
Occupation: Pirate/ Slave Trader, over 50 years
Religion: Philosophy of Evil
Vessel: Large Airship crew of over 200 (airship DM's Idea)
History: Nothing known about him before he started pirating, Family, Origin and real name are all unknown. Lost right in in fight with my Char. (score one for me :)) He only employs the most evil from all the different races. He seeks away to obtain eternal life with out fear of death, without becoming a vampire or other undead creature.
M.O: Raids an area slaughters and eats all adults and sells the children into slavery, and take all items of great value and any artifacts they can find.

You could use limewire to simply download the books you need, thats how I get the majority of my books, that and some site like Paizo you can buy the book in PDF format for just acouple of dollars. Mostly everyone in my group uses laptops, we use an electonic char sheets that way we dont have to keep making up nice clean one as they get used. and I do have a copy of all sheets so I know my people arent cheating

I believe it all depends on how you recieve the familiar. The way I run my game is for rangers and druids their companion must except them before they will join them, were a wizard can often buy a familiar from a market of some sorts, or in some cases can come across something while its a baby or even still in its egg and raise it himself. There are only a few reasons I can think of that would cause a familiar to betray someone. One is how the person treats it, if its treated badly it might turn on them then run back into the wild. If its bought from a questionable shop the shop owner might have trained the animals to steal vaulables from the person that purchased them and then return to the store. Then there is always spell's that can force the familiar to turn on you. You also have to take in concideration the natural habits of a particular familiar. Ive known people to want things like pixie dragons as a familiar, while harmless enough, but by habit they do steal and play pranks on people. While that isnt realy betraying the person it can make for some hassle.
