Maybe this is a little late (or a lot), but I ended up building a Phalanx soldier (Favored of Athena) and focused a lot on shield and spear. For the sword, I went with a Falchion or some other sword my DM recommended as archetypal of Hoplites. Remember, Achilles was a Myrmidon, sort of like a storm trooper Hoplite. It would work to your advantage to play the Hoplite card because of shield bonuses.
"They say your mother was an immortal goddess; they say you can't be killed";
"I wouldn't be bothering with the shield then would I?"
My character dishes out mucho damage and is an excellent party defender (he guards the keg.....ahem); my son even says "he's way OP", but that's the way I designed him to be as historical as possible.
