"Oh, uh, I didn't expect to have to talk about this, well there was some signs of Aroden worship from what appeared to be an era prior to what we know of him. Like, um... his Twelve Guises, right? These looked like they represented values slightly different than what we know them to be today," Pelagos tries to explain. With a sigh, he shuts up and offers up a paper where he sketched one of the Guises.
With the Minotaur swinging through the tree and clearly noticing something is up, Pelagos moves towards it. Inhaling as deeply as he can, he forcefully exhales, but instead of typical air, he expels a bank of fog! "To the mountain! It has many narrow passages!" he suggests.
Pelagos hustles forward, crossbow in hand. Lining up a shot, he looses the bolt with a satisfying thunk! For a moment, it looks like it'll sail straight into the beast's eye, but a fortuitous turn of the Minotaur's great skull causes the bolt to strike the thick bone of his forehead instead.
I feel no obligation to aid this Mite as it flees, but it has taken to running in the direction we wish to go... It'd be overly cruel to leave it running free while following it, injured. Pelagos sighs, casts a spell and jogs after the hobbling Mite. Missing the first swipe, he tags the little guy on the second and returns to the others. "I, uh, we're all going the same way. Didn't seem right. The indignity..." he shares. "...I'm ready."
Now I see their true colors, crushing the weak on a whim! While his fellows terrorize arthropod, Pelagos pulls a twig off of Janira's haphazardly abandoned bag. Carefully popping the cork off the top of a vial of Alchemists' fire, he gently swirls it in the goop. With the tip of the twig ignited, he plants it in a dark corner of the model. Light in the darkest corner to banish the shadows! He does his best to recork the vial, suddenly thankful to be knee deep in cold water.
Pelagos freezes as the entire model starts to glow and Abdara's well-timed concern reaches his ears. A bit of glowing muck drips off of his finger and gently splashes into the pool. "I, uh, I was just painting! Aroden's A-a-artist! Being a God! Tiny Abasalom! Amphibious subjects..." he says, his words threatening to devolve into a stream of panicked consciousness. When it becomes clear that their deaths aren't all imminent, he starts to relax. A little, anyways. "Anyone else want to try?" he offers, backing away from the model.
Pealgos neatly sidesteps any conversation and wades into the pool to take a better look at this model of the Starstone Cathedral. What a wondrous element of Absalom. To become a God? Wow... "I... I'm listening," he responds, the weight of shame carrying his gaze to the bottom of the pool. After a few moments of silence, he wipes his face and turns his attention to the model again. What would it be like, to play God for a day? Gently scrapping some of the glowing fungus from the walls and mixing it with a dollop of mud, he doodles a bit on the walls of the "city." Inspiration for my subjects, just like Aroden's Artist!
In the steady light of Abdara's cantrip, Pelagos studies the four most legible carvings. "These must be quite, uh, quite old," he begins. "I've heard Aroden's faithful were strong in Absalom, but just about... nonexistence since his passing, yet here is the Artist, Hunter, and Soldier. Three of Aroden's twelve forms," he explains before frowning. "They're different than the pictures I've seen. Maybe an even earlier style of each?" The useless information I manage to keep in my head, UGH! Can't help battling a Minotaur, but remembering some old pictures? Oh man am I winner there... Sighing, he backs up to let the others peruse the art.
Pelagos scales the wall and relinquishes the cloak to Gnoda's "hokey religion and ancient rituals." "Soloman, I think you're going to be best at breaking spikes," he points out, offering the unusually large man his morningstar. Jumping a little at the nudge, his hand goes to his wand after Abdara's words. "There is... a certain rush to it," he admits. I don't wish to harm anything that doesn't have it coming, but... hopefully something has it coming in here. The rush of anticipation has some intoxication to it. S̴i̷m̷p̷l̵e̷t̷o̸n̴,̵ ̷t̴h̴e̵r̶e̴ ̶a̴r̴e̵ ̶m̸a̵n̸y̵ ̵t̸e̸s̴t̶ ̴s̸u̴b̵j̴e̸c̴t̵s̷ ̵b̸e̵f̷o̴r̷e̸ ̷y̸o̸u̵ ̷n̶o̸w̵!̷ ̷B̴U̵R̶N̴ ̷T̸H̷E̸M̸!̵ ̶B̷U̶R̸N̸ ̵T̶H̷E̶M̴ ̸A̵A̶A̶L̶L̸L̴!̴
Pelagos accepts the wand again and nods with understanding. Abdara is right, we are on our Confirmation together, but each of us need to be Confirmed through out own abilities. He frowns inwardly at the awfully silent voice in his head. Perhaps it has been playing tricks on me... Fire clears my mind, maybe magical fire works as well. Could it have blocked my connection with this wand? He stows the wand within easy reach. At the pit, he begins taking off his armor. "I'll descend into the pit," he offers.
Didn't Gnoda pack Janira's bag? Pelagos gapes for a moment before settling on silence. One of our memories aren't what they used to be and I don't think right now is the time to discover which. He takes the offered wand from Abdara, but the magical energy coming off of it just doesn't align with his. He opens his mouth to say something, but the first two times he does so, she begins to speak to someone else. He eventually works up the courage to tap her on the shoulder. "Miss Abdara, I, um, I think there's been a mistake," he begins, pointing at the wand in question. "I can't make this work. I'm sorry for disappointing you," he concludes, looking at the floor while offering it back. Sheepishly, he collects a couple of the thrown concoctions and makes his way to the edge of the group to look them over. I've got to show them I'm still useful!
Pelagos is entirely caught off-guard at Abdara's words. "Oh, I, uh, it was mostly done already, and I, uh," he stammers, pointing at his crossbow and your weapons. H̷A̸H̴A̵A̶A̵A̴A̵A̸!̷ ̸Y̸o̵u̶ ̴c̶a̸n̶'̶t̵ ̶e̸v̵e̶n̸ ̴t̸a̷k̴e̶ ̵p̶r̴a̵i̶s̵e̶.̵ ̸H̵o̵w̴ ̴m̴a̵n̴y̶ ̶m̸o̷r̷e̴ ̶m̸i̵n̶u̶t̵e̸s̴ ̸b̶e̷f̸o̸r̵e̸ ̴y̵o̸u̶'̶r̸e̷ ̵f̸o̷d̷d̷e̷r̸ ̸f̶o̷r̶ ̸t̸h̸e̵ ̸p̷a̷c̵k̷?̶ "You're back?! So soon... grrr..." he mutters. "Excuse me. I do my best to protect my allies... Ma'am," he declares. "I think the Wolves have made their mistake. If they wake up, they have a second chance. If they don't..." He shrugs his shoulders noncommittally.
As the fire merrily crackles on, Pelagos rocks contentedly side to side, lost in the quiet of his own mind. Memories of his first kill briefly play through his mind. The fear of noticing his assailant, the desperation of their struggle, the release as it all came to a bloody, heaving end. Shame, fear, and paranoia follow, but all are quickly burned away by the campfire's enduring flame.
Glad to hear you're enjoying it! :D The character development/RP is what keeps me playing via PbP. Progress is obviously a lot slower (days vs hours), but you can really get into a character and respond to a lot of what is often considered "window dressing" for a scenario. Player/player banter also doesn't take away time/attention from the rest of the table too :) Especially when the GM and your fellow players are all Rockstars ;)
Pelagos jumps a little when Abdara shouts for him. "No, no I'm not busy." Seeing her trying to align firewood, he comes over with his flint and steel. Y̴e̶s̴,̵ ̷h̶a̵v̶e̸ ̵a̵ ̴h̷a̵n̸d̷ ̷i̸n̸ ̶m̴a̵k̶i̴n̷g̴ ̵y̶o̷u̵r̷ ̵o̸w̸n̴ ̵p̶y̵r̸e̶,̶ ̴w̷o̷r̴m̴!̶ After helping her stack the logs appropriately, he uses a trowel to dig out a circle around it. Finally, placing the kindling, he holds the flint and steel in his hands, breathing heavily. Time... for silence. Striking the tools together, the kindling is quickly ignited and Pelagos stares deeply into the resulting blaze. He looks at peace, much calmer than you've yet seen. He doesn't seem to register the call for marshmallows, but Abdara's joke yields an absentminded smile.
Pelagos stares at Soloman. So... much noise... "Janira, as a Pathfinder, would you mind looking at some of my stuff? To make sure I've got the right gear. I haven't done one of these proper expeditions before," he explains a little sheepishly. P̸a̴t̵h̴e̷t̵i̸c̸ ̸c̸r̴e̸a̴t̵u̶r̶e̶!̷ ̴N̴o̸w̶ ̵t̶h̸e̶y̷ ̶k̴n̸o̷w̴ ̴y̶o̸u̵ ̸a̸r̸e̴ ̴w̷e̸a̴k̸ ̵a̶n̵d̸ ̴r̴i̴p̷e̵ ̴f̴o̵r̵ ̷c̸u̶l̷l̸i̵n̴g̸!̷ "It's the right thing to do, I can't be the weak link," he mutters to his shoulder.
Question: Looking at Pelagos' Demonic Curse (full text spoilered below), does the spellcasting limitation on good/lawful descriptors apply to all spellcasting sources, or just his Oracle spells? Originally, I thought it'd only be Oracle spells, but just now I realized it is commonly accepted that Sorcerer bloodlines change the way spells are cast across all sources (which has never made sense to me, but I'm a fart in a hurricane on that one). Demonic Curse: Your heart is cursed with the pull of the Abyss. You cannot cast spells with the good or lawful descriptors, nor can you summon good or lawful creatures. Good and lawful creatures instinctively distrust you, and you take a –4 penalty on all Diplomacy checks against such creatures. You gain a +2 bonus on all Bluff and Intimidate checks. Diplomacy is not a class skill for you, but Bluff or Intimidate (choose one) is. At 5th level, you gain a +4 bonus to all saving throws against fear effects. At 10th level, you gain immunity to poison. At 15th level, any weapon you wield is treated as chaotic and evil for the purposes of overcoming damage reduction.
"I, um, well, sure, yes, climate... engineering," Pelagos stammers. They're all looking at me now, ok, I'll just keep talking, that's what they expect of me. "I'm here because of a note I got," he explains, offering a crumpled scrap of paper. He brushes stray strands of hair out of his face, which immediately return. Uncrumpling the paper, the official Pathfinder letterhead is already faded and starting to rub away. "That's, that's it really."
"Yes, Yes! I can do that!" Pelagos says, hopping off his chair and speed walking to the fireplace. With a practiced hand, he uses the nearby poker to reinvigorate the fire to a healthy level. S̸i̷m̴p̶l̷e̸t̵o̷n̸,̵ ̸t̴h̵e̵y̷ ̴l̴u̵r̸e̸ ̶y̵o̷u̴ ̷a̶w̴a̵y̸ ̸t̴o̷ ̷s̸c̵h̷e̵m̸e̷!̵ "No, they're Pathfinders! They explore, report, cooperate! They wouldn't do that to one of their own." He stands back up and looks at Abdara. "There! That's good, right? I'm Pelagos Sing, I'm a Pathfinder too," he clarifies. Why are they looking at me like that? What have I done now? Just need to keep cool, we're on the same team. I can do this.
