Background:

It was written on the pattern of the scales on the back of Djatrix that he would play an important part in the Kes'slessi clan life. There was a celebration and the tribe rejoiced. It was, thus, expected when, at a young age, Djatrix would become the focus of strange phenomena. "The spirits of nature have befriended him," said the seers. "He is blessed."

In time, Djatrix began to hear voices. They whispered at him, telling him secrets and truths most would rather forget. Too young to realize what it meant, Djatrix told these truths to friends and adults. Unconfortable truths would only cause Djatrix to be shunned. "But there is power in this young lizard," said the seers. And so people treated him with distant respect.

Then the voices began to whisper other things. They told him of the Rift and of a being calling from inside it. They said the Rift was not completelly evil, but a prison of sorts. They urged Djatrix to educate the Kes'slessi seers about the facts. They should not simply the Rift, but seek to understand it.

During a night of celebration in which the young coming of age would be accepted as adults of the tribe, Djatrix spoke his whispered truths to a stunned audience. To his surprise, his wisdow was not embraced, but refuted. Called lier and posessed by Rift demons, he was expelled from the celebration and refused his right as an adult.

Both ashamed and confused, Djatrix wandered the jungle trying to understand what was going on. He was angry at the voices, believing they had lied to him and, in doing so, caused the whole tribe to hate him. He lived as a wanderer for months before a chance encounter with Xath'ix, one of the tribe's seers. The elder lizardman was performing a ritual at a nearby ruins, confering with dark forces drawn from the rift! Horrorified, Djatrix ran back to the tribe to tell of that blasphemy.

Djatrix was received with doubt and distrust. He told everything he saw to the seers and to anyone who would listen, but it was all hard to believe. Why would a seer of the Kes'slessi comune with the demons from the rift? Xath'ix arrived at the tribe center as Djatrix exposed the facts to a crowd. Furious, the seer accused Djatrix of dark sorcery and that it was Djatrix who had communed with evil, the same evil that whispered at Djatrix's ears from birth. It was no coincidence that the voices told Djatrix to rip the truth from Xath'ix's mind himself. And so he did. The seer felt to his knees screaming in pain and Djatrix glanced broken images of the truth. Treason, conspiracy, dark forces and a powerful being in eternal pain. But the attack was enough to condemn Djatrix. He was outcast as a creature posessed by the evil that corrupted the world and ordered to leave or die by his brothers' talons.

Djatrix once again wandered the land. Confused by what he saw on the seer's mind, he once again trusted the voices the always followed him. And they did not stop at it. Every day they would whisper broken truths to him and his visions guided him to Riftview. There, the whispers told him, he would find kindred spirits with whom he would bond in an important quest. On their path were treasures unimaginable and magic abound. In the end... The spirits failed to make it clear. "Follow the path," they whispered. "Your destiny lies at its end."
