Hey guys. I'm sorry to say but I will be dropping the game though it probably comes as no surprise seeing how bad my posting has been as of late. I thought my schedule would get easier starting this week but it actually didn't ease up at all. I suspect I won't be available again until my current contract is over but that's end of October - or possibly later if they continue it.

I'm just at home on completely wacky hours if even then and usually feeling too drained to even boot up a computer. Trying to get even a single post in per day has become a chore instead of fun so it's time to give up. Best wishes to y'all.

Dhavyn is about to answer to Bartans comments when he spots the bugbears. He rushes to them after Khayal whispering "ברענען הענט". As he gets close to them he pushes out his hands and unleashes a fan of roaring flames.

Burning Hands: V, S / 15 cone burst / Reflex DC15 for half damage. Flammable materials burn if the flame touches them. A character can extinguish burning items as a full-round action.

Dhavyn hurries closer to his allies content that they so easily dispatched the Gnolls. "Are we done here or is the plan to fight whole village?" he asks loudly.

Dhavyn moves next to Bartan and hurls a searing lance at the Ogre but he is clearly out of practice and the lance misses its mark.

Some "bad" news here. When the game seemed to die out I agreed on a few RL thing which lead to days when I can't post. For example I know I won't be able to post tomorrow due full day job related training and on thursday I won't be in a place with net connection at all. Next weekend might be tricky too.

"That alarm is going to bring the whole village on us, and I think we failed in our task here. The victim is almost certainly dead but perhaps someone more keen-eyed can find clues how he got here before the horde shows up." Dhavyn says with a slight nod towards the corpse.

"We must either find a chokepoint which we can easily defend or vacate these premises as soon as possible" he adds looking nervous.

Congrats Bartan. I'd say super limited posting for a long while is likely to be more accurate. Babies tend to to be avid consumers of parents' spare time. :)

As for the current situation. Dhavyn prefers opptions that keep his hide intact but so far the gnolls haven't been a great threat.

Dhavyn joins the others having finished his research. He gives Bartan a quizzical look as the words interrupt his train of thoughts.

"Hmh. Yes. I suppose I could. I still have a few healing elixirs to my person but more would not hurt..." he pauses to consider and adds "You are most kind to provide us your aid so freely." he nods to father Z

"As for the ambush. I'm inclined to agree but are you ready to leave their victim to enjoy the not-so-pleasant treatment they are undoubtly receiving from the gnolls?" he asks with a raised brow.

We have the party gp pool and most of it is chime money so dig yourself in freely and get what you need. Eh that guy must have pretty strong lungs. :)

"I hope I do not disturb, your highness, but I'd wish to do more research on the Genies and the library still seems to hold scraps of the old lore. I'm no scholar but the history of this region is of great interest to me and something here might help us in our quest. If you permit my presence here."

If there's no opposition I'll search the library for anything useful. Especially concerning gnolls, harpies, genies and Kelmarane. I'm going to take 20 on any perception check and roll some pre-emptive knowledge rolls just in case.

It has been really slow for me at work but that's going to change in August when people get back from summer holidays. Mostly been mulling around the (paper)mill.

We finally got some good weather here as well so yay. Unfortunately all my days are mostly spent inside a windowless room so not yay. Welp. At least I got work. :)

"I also think it is good idea for Yazi to move first. She seems to have the most keen eye of us all. I'm just wondering what triggers that stone door to close. The last thing we need is for it to seal behind us he adds and hovers at the doorway. Not entering to the room D2 yet.

I rolled a quick character for fun. The character sheet with crunch can be found here. Not my best work but I whipped up him fast and I think he turned out decent.

Baird Mullean:

Description: A 6 ft tall scruffy man clad in leather armor stands before you. The armor and his clothes have seen better days and his blonde hair and fair face are caked with dirt. Aside from armor he wears a simple hooded cape against the elements. Despite easy smile his posture is alert, and his hand grips hilt of a sword resting on his hip. A ragged bandolier filled with assortment of darts, daggers and tools is wrapped around his chest as is a separate strap holding a simple satchel and a pouch. A rugged backpack completes the image of a brazen spelunker - or that of a scavenger.

RP notes: A mix of warrior, arcanist, healer, thief, and silver-tongued scoundrel. Baird is meant to be the swiss knife with focus on survival. He is cheerful and dour, friendly and hostile, alert and a slob... really, anything that the given situation demands. Neither good nor evil he is willing to do much to survive but finds no pleasure in evil. He would rather defend a capable ally than stab them in the back, choosing the long term gain over the short term one, but hungry belly can make even a nobler man do strange things...

Backstory: Born in questionable conditions to questionable parents Baird is more of a Half-Gutter Rat than he is Half-Elf, and this is likely what saved his life when the legions of the dead were let loose. Where others fought he hid, where others brandished the flames of justice he sought the refugee in shadows, where others fought over the scraps he bargained for them - or scavenged.

Surviving the initial plague with resilience of someone used to less than healthy conditions, and surviving the onslaught of the dead where mightier fell taught him valuable lessons. Survival was not a matter of pride or strength in arms, it was a matter of using whatever you got your hands into, and making the best out of them. Be it arms and armor, magic, a bit of wit or a mere stroke of luck.

Baird now wanders the world seeking the ever elusive sense of security he knows is long gone. Ready to meet new people with a charming smile, or a sharp blade if the things turn sour. A man with uncertain future and nearly forgotten past, worn out by the daily struggle for survival but not willing to give up.

Hrm. Our current DM is heading for a vacation and I'm only in a single game so far. You guys seem to be missing a good rogue type. I'm thinking a half-elf archaeologist bard that can help with traps and scavenging. Not to mention you might appreciate the restful sleep and clw what with healing being limited. :)

I agree with the total damage assessment. On their own the damage is so little that the chance to botch concentration check because of it is pretty insignificant. Plus it would follow the ruling of dazing spell and the like which only affect target once per cast. Not once per missile.

Just confirming that readied magic missile. Oh and before it comes up: concentration check per missile or after total damage? This is one of those fuzzy cases where DM ruling is required.

I do! I mean as a player I do (plus you sort of linked to its desc ;)! Really the only relevant IC data from character perspective is that it was in fact a spell and not supernatural ability.

The OOC data is also relevant but for players since chaos hammer is filled with conditionals (alignment, status effect, half damage all applying only under specific situations) that actually have a mechanical effect on our actions. i.e. any lawful character that fails save not only takes full damage but is also slowed while neutrals take half damage even on a failed save and are not slowed.

The only reason I wondered about it was because the effect did not match the linked description. I think the lessened die is a good tradeoff for not eating AOO but keep in mind also the option for "cast defensively". DC15+2x spell level vs d20+CL+casting score mod check. Though without combat casting it's still pretty risky for our Huecuva to try it with a level 4 spell. :)

You can just state you cast it defensively using the DM fiat. For me the confusion arose from the fact that you said take X damage if you are neutral and linked to chaos hammer without it working like chaos hammer or spell (no aoo/defensice casting, 30 ft air for 20 radius spell, no mention about neutral folks taking half damage, no mention about slow, the spell inflicting only 2d8 damage in all while for the spell minimum is 3d8 as it requires lvl 7 caster (cleric) because it's 4th level spell).

Now all these are fine changes per DM power i.e. that was SU burst and not spell but we need the data to counter properly. i.e. if it is SU ability my readied magic missile does nothing. :)

Actually nm. You wouldn't call for saves if it didn't affect all, and it was probably SU ability, and not spell. I hope it casts spell though because I just readied magic missile for interrupt - that chaos hammer did not draw aoo though so... hmm. Also if that ability mimics chaos hammer (whatever it was) I take only half damage even on a failed save (I'm neutral) and I'm not slowed either, right?

Dhavyn peers around the wall at the lich and others. He pulls back a little, intoning מאַגיש מיססילע, before leaning back. His eyes focus on the skeletal undead and with a quick twist of fingers he launches two magical darts at the monstrosity.

Unfortunately the undead's presence seems to disturb the energies within the missiles and the impact does very little damage.

Not only that but it also adds reach! Anything that gets close is going to eat aoo. More if you have combat reflexes.

I played a tin-can greatsword fighter with great cleave in 3.5. Power attack, cleave, great cleave and combat reflexes combined with medium armor. Enlarged he was a beast against swarm tactics opponents.

I'm actually just rebuilding his portfolio for Pathfinder. It takes a few more feats but I should have pretty good cleaving going on around level 4. Of course I didn't quite optimize his build since that would be boring (and contrary to his theme) but I bet he is still good.

By lvl 4 (15pp human with dual talent) he has Str & dex 16; scale armor, power attack, furious assault, cleave, cleaving finish, and combat reflexes. Hopefully also +2 str belt for 18 str and a +1 weapon by then. I swapped the original Greatsword with Earth Breaker so he dishes out consistent 2d6+9 damage with above mentioned setup which is not that bad even against a single foe on its own, and devastating against swarms. Now add the +2 str from enlarged size, the reach, and combat reflexes into the mix... yeah, he is no single foe slayer but is pretty deadly roadblock, and trash mobs beware.

Edit: where did that 4 come from... +2 I meant. Fixed! Edit: Also the idea is to get the belt of physical might (+str & dex) asap. The dex penalty hurts combat reflexes but with 18-2 dex you still get three AOOs enlarged.

The map data indicates that one square is 15'. Is that accurate? I'll move you Khayal but need to know that first (actually I moved you 4 squares already but I'll move more if necessary). You can see the demon around the edge of the building/wall but you should have partial cover if you choose to take it. Mage Armor running with presumably almost 3 hours left.

Hmm. How do feats work with spells that change stats? I.e. Khayal's Double Slice requires 15 dex but if I cast Enlarge person on him he loses 2 points of dex. I guess he would lose the feat. Khayal is not the best target anyway. Even with double slice he would get only a single AOO without combat reflexes.

Avenka is probably the best target. Especially now that she has cleave but she is a magic phobe.

Hajar is a good candidate but he always rushes in heedless of danger (paladins!) so there's no way I can get him to wait through the 1 round casting time!

Hmm. Actually Yazi is probably the best target all things considered. Not sure if I can get her to stay still long enough either...

Well it's not for this battle anyway. It's for when we get swarmed by flunkies. Let me know if there are any takers for Enlarge! I don't want to randomly force it on anyone without their OOC permission!

Insert obstacle rules here for later use:

Low Obstacles and Cover: A low obstacle (such as a wall no higher than half your height) provides cover, but only to creatures within 30 feet (6 squares) of it. The attacker can ignore the cover if he's closer to the obstacle than his target.

Cover and Attacks of Opportunity: You can't execute an attack of opportunity against an opponent with cover relative to you.

Soft Cover: Creatures, even your enemies, can provide you with cover against ranged attacks, giving you a +4 bonus to AC. However, such soft cover provides no bonus on Reflex saves, nor does soft cover allow you to make a Stealth check.

Big Creatures and Cover: Any creature with a space larger than 5 feet (1 square) determines cover against melee attacks slightly differently than smaller creatures do. Such a creature can choose any square that it occupies to determine if an opponent has cover against its melee attacks. Similarly, when making a melee attack against such a creature, you can pick any of the squares it occupies to determine if it has cover against you.

Well we got spotted already so I wonder if a fight is coming up soon or if we should run to Church.

The problem as I see it is that there are likely to be some Gnolls loitering around the grounds and who knows what is inside the church. Chances are we end up between the hammer and the anvil if we just rush in there.

We may get between two enemy lines so maybe clear the market first - or at least wait and see what kind of horde comes after us?

Hearing Underella's shout Dhavyn shifts closer to the edge of the building and prepares for battle - just in case.

I think you may wish to step past Bartan. Khayal. Anything that charges us from Underella's direction will hit Bartan first. Not to mention there is a nice chokepoint just a step ahead from Bartan. If Avenka and Khayal stop there it's really easy for them to block swarms of enemies... unless they have ranged weapons but then we can just withdraw around the building. Hmm I guess we could also step inside one of those buildings but we have such a nice cover from current one.

I've trouble parsing Undrella's sentence. Is she calling *us* servants of Kardwhatwashisname or is he calling out to the servants of Kardthing notifying them about our presence.

Edit: Someone give me a fire elemental and firefall... this whole place would go up in flames... bwhaha!
