Description: Deylar is slight of build and not overly tall (5’10”, 155lbs). His physical appearance is a strange mix of the mundane and the unusual: at first glance he appears to have pale white hair and greyish skin, but in certain light there are clearly streaks of silver in that hair, the smooth skin almost appearing to have the rough texture of scales. There are none of the obvious fiendish aspects of his appearance like horns or tail or claws, but his eyes are a pupil-less black.
Most observers would think him a mage instead of a priest. His typical garb is robes without armor or shield, carrying only a staff and very little other gear. Personality: Deylar is an extremely devote follower of Nethys, to the point where his ultimate desire is to do everything, even the most simple of tasks, with magic. He carries very little equipment, choosing to arm, armor, and sustain himself through spells whenever possible. Relying on spells like Mage Hand and Prestidigitation, there are days where the young tiefling barely does anything without expending arcane energy instead of personal effort.
He has a constant need to feel Nethys’s touch, and is almost always under the influence of some spell (most often Guidance or Prestidigitation) for the comforting touch of arcane energy. As a result, what other people perceive as him mumbling to himself is in reality an incantation of some kind. Deylar is naturally quiet, often the last to speak in a situation. He believes that the best way to show others the power of his deity is to have them feel it first-hand – he is quick to use his magics to support and aid others as a sign of that power. This, combined with his need to use spells for everything, means Deylar is rather ambitious bordering on power-hungry when it comes to magic. He believes that the mixture of fiendish and celestial elements of his heritage represent the touch of the All Seeing Eye, and while he has no specific proof of it he believes this marks him as having a powerful destiny. History: Deylar was born in Westcrown. He has no memory of his parents, being raised on the streets and among the Tiefling community, and even in a city where Tieflings are not uncommon he was always a bit of an anomaly. There were days when he was horrified by the cruelty around him (much to the dismay of those around him) and others when he was the instigator of that cruelty (much to the joy of those around him). He was constantly felt like an outsider: the last picked to play, the first abandoned for something better, the extra child that needed to be dealt with. He does not have terrible memories of his childhood per se, but certainly no joyous memories or cherished friends.
At a young age he was taken on as an apprentice to a local mage. That apprenticeship ended quickly without much success. Deylar found himself frustrated at the studies, and his master was not shy to tell him that he simply was not as smart as the other students. It made no sense to the young boy that it should be that hard. He had expected the energies to flow more naturally than to come from pouring over musty tomes and memorizing ancient passages. Then one day Deylar’s natural abilities started to manifest. While this could have been very good news, a sign of a path for the child to take, it did not turn out well for Deylar. Immediately it was clear to those around him that Deylar’s powers were different. It did not take long for people to realize that his powers were not coming from his fiendish heritage. Quite the opposite in fact. The local mages quickly identified his powers as more celestial in nature, and that caused such a feeling of dread and disgust among the other Tieflings that he quickly found himself run out of the community. He decided to keep going, leaving Westcrown behind to search for that sense of belonging that he had yet found. He found it in the most unlikely place. Barely a week after leaving the city the starving tiefling came upon a group of adventurers camped in the woods. There was a cleric among them, a servant of Nethys named Connell Lebeda, who ignored the protests of his companions and offered Deylar food and shelter. Over the next few days of traveling Deylar stayed with them, listening intently to the preachings of the All Seeing Eye. This finally made sense to him: the intuitive flow of magical energies all around them, the dichotomy of that energy and the nature of the deity, these things resonated with him more than anything else ever had before. And Deylar found himself hungry to learn more. Connell trained him for a time. Eventually Deylar found a small company of his own, refining his faith and the gifts Nethys bestowed on him, using those gifts to aid his friends while bettering his own position in life. He could not get enough of it and found himself in constant search of another tomb to search, another spell to master, another relic to recover. He learned everything he could and more, and his appetite for knowledge led him further and further along the path of Nethys’s faithful. Greatest Fear: Having finally found a place in the clergy of Nethys, and a purpose in the following of his faith, Deylar’s greatest fear is losing touch with that deity. In reality, it’s the losing of his perceived place in the world that truly drives that fear. Its this fear that partially fuels his need to prove himself by expanding his powers and growing his abilities in the eyes of Nethys. Uncrossable Line: For good or ill, Deylar has not yet found a line he will not cross. He has offered healing to the most cruel villains and engaged in battle with the most devout servants of good. In each case it was the will of The Eye that needed to be served, and the uncovering of secrets and power, that determined which side of the equation Deylar fell upon. Denying his faith and straying from the path of Nethys is probably the closest thing he has to a step too unfathomable to take. Goals: Deylar is in constant search for power, whether it be simply unlocking new abilities within himself or uncovering ancient artifacts and relics to study and use. The allure of traveling to distant lands and discovering their secrets is too much of a draw for the young tiefling to even consider not accepting the invitation to join the Guild. Letter of Recommendation: Wyvern’s Soul,
I am writing this letter to recommend Deylar Tiarshuro, Servant of Nethys, for membership in your company. Deylar has already made great achievements in his service to the All Seeing Eye and is looking to further those accomplishments in a mercenary company in great Chul'Galbrann. To date this young tiefling has already showed courage in combat against several orc tribes, guaranteed the safety of his companions against wounds they received from thrice-damned Festrogs, and been part of a company that retrieved not one but two pieces of the ancient Aslanti Seven-Part Rod. I personally witnessed Deylar’s prowess in battle with several ogres……without even lifting a hand he sent a wave of protective magics over our group, and as the warriors scattered to battle the beasts Deylar stayed calming out of the melee hurling magics at each of the beasts. In fact, one of us almost fell until he fired a beam of light and actually healed the man from across the field! In the next instant that same beam of light struck the ogre dead. An ambitious man with a thirst for knowledge and the power to back it up, Deylar would be a fine addition to your troupe. - Signed, Edric Dayne, priest of Nethys, Magnimar |
