![]() I our campaign, the GM allowed me to build a Cavalier Order/Army. Since my Character has a Hippogriff as special mount, and we have an Exotic Craftsman who deals in such critters, these cavaliers are allowed to have them as animal companions. (Same would be for an Army of Paladins, in regards of their Divine Bond with a steed). When I was GMing the Council of Thieves AP I allowed the player special mounts in form of giant riding lizards. I think you can make up any kind of special mount that you like, but you should keep in mind the climate and available terrain, as well es game balance. ![]()
![]() I am a player, and currently we are in the Blood for Blood installment. Since we have not finished the whole AP, I am unable do judge the complete thing. But here are my few thoughts on the campaign so far: - being able to play in politics: This is a fun aspect, although it might stand and fall with your fellow Players. So far, politics is limited to building your Kingdom, and maybe acting on any outside influences, such as the threat from a neighboring Kingdom. The only thing that I had hoped for in this aspect is doing a little more "internal politics" that go beyond "where will we build what next". I had hoped to roleplay a little more internal politics with/against my fellow Players, like secretly building a "private army" that is stronger than theirs, buying and selling favors, etc. (short: internal powerplay on the political stage) - Sandbox playing mode - No time limit for building the Kingdom (we are in our 4th game-year) Dislikes: - Army design rules: leaves not much options for "a bit more realistic" strategy and tactics on how to incorporate specific troops - Battles are to abstract, here again, I had hoped for a the chance of being able to bring in my own strategy and tactics (I am not a wargamer, but bit more allowance for Player flexibility would be nice) - Silly complaints, demands and sidequests brought to the rulers by their citizens, such as "a boar ran away with my spear: you rulers must bring it back, Or: "I want to cook a feast and I need some eels. You rulers, could you go fishing for me?" And of course: "I need to have some berries picked; you rulers surely can do that for me!" Gaaaaaahhhh!!! But all in all, so far it has been fun. ![]()

Plenty of acceptable reasons have been mentioned in the above posts, most, if not all valid, be the pro or contra. But I think the chaotic alignment gives a player more options fore roleplay. It does not matter if chaotic or lawful, what will be important are the Cavalier sticking to its organizations own "rules, articles, bylaws constitution" etc. If, or if not an order of the dragon cavalier should be lawful or Chaotic would depend on the Dragon-Alignment if at all, why should a good paladin not be part of a dragon-society who also worship chaotic evil dragons because of their abilities, strength, power....? my opinion, let the players pick if chaotic or lawfull...more fun for players and GM alike. But, if you want your books to look rather nice, fit well onto your shelf (and look "even" with your other Pathfinder books, I suggest bringing the book to a professional bookbinder. Since that might not be as inexpensive as having it done with a copy shop, the binding will be sturdy, and as good as new. As in regards to the price, it might be a good idea to have them bind a few books together into a new, one-volume-edition. The better question (in my humble opinion) would be "when did one start playing Roleplaying Games / D&D/AD&D". This is not quite true. As an 30 year gamer, who had to run from store to store to store (if there have been that many in my vicinity), as well as a person who worked in a Hobby Store ( an finally owning my own)here is my two cents worth: 1: Most games (and that is true especially for new games that are published by a non-major company), are seldomly stocked in Gaming Stores except by constant demand of a few enthusiasts (and then only if they explicitly order or subscribe to that new Game). If one gets lucky there might be one or two copies on stock (for trial), and then there are usually no supporting products except if (again) explicitly demanded. Usually Hobby Stores only order a Game Line if they can be sure that it will sell at least on a mediocre level. (Vampire, and the other White Wolf Products being an exception, but only due to the reason that there was an almost instant demand due to the Ann Rice Novels). Stores tend to be wary of new products, for there is no knowing on how many Customers might be interested in them or are willing to actually buy them. Also, the staff usually does not promote them unless the game or the company is well known (meaning: The Company has been present during Conventions or exhibitions, and then with a big, glorious stand, or is well known and in business for at least 10 years and has published at least mediocre selling products before). I myself have collected over 260 RPG Core Rules over the last 20 years (last official count has been 10 years ago) and while there are a lot more than that on the market now (or have been), only about 10 can be named "sellers", including (A)D&D, Vampire (including off-spins like Werewolf and co), Shadowrun, Battletech (the Table Top, not the RPG), Gurps, Warhammer FRP, Rolemaster, Merp, (and in Germany DSA (Das schwarze Auge = "The black Eye) and Midgard) (Not in that sequence). Other good Games, who did not have a chance to attract much attention, if only for the reason that they have been published by smaller, less known companies, or for the reason that most stores did not stock, or promote them, (stores seldomly promote games of smaller companies due to the time and work (as well as risk) involved. Keep in mind that promoting an RPG by hosting Gaming Nights is not as rewarding as promoting TableTop Games such as Warhammer Fantasy Battle (or 40K) as well as Battletech, due to the reason that a Group of Gamers who play an RPG do not attrack as much attention as any Table Top Wargame (as, for example, Warhammer Battle) does. Observers will have a hard time to judge a RPG by "listening" to others play, whereas TableTop Games offer a visual input by way of painted miniatures, especially if there are lots of them). Anyway, anyone who is not a subscriber will pay more than the price one might pay in a Hobby Store due to shipping cost. So he could buy his books with a local Hobby Store if the product is in stock. Why dont they? `cause they are not willing to wait weeks untill the Hobby Store places its next order with their supplier, and then having to hope that this supplier has that specific game in stock. Any (Direct) Subscriber does get a discount (in this case from PAIZO; I dont know if others offer similar conditions), but this should be seen as a reward for being a loyal customer who in addition helps figuring on how many books might be an good idea to print or not to print. What keeps those Hobby Stores to offer a similar discount to their loyal customers who subscribe to a product or product line? And here again, How long do I have to wait, because that store again will add my subscription to his order when he is going to do his main order himself. And then there are those "FLGS" who are not contend with the regular cover price, who find or invent means or reasons to add a little bit more to the final price (shipping as example). If asked why, the explain that their ordering of your specifically wished for product involved additional shipping costs due to the reason that their regular Retailer does not stock your product. Thus he had to order it separately with someone else....... Keep one more thing in mind, as pro-argument for Paizo's Online Store: Without that option and the fans and the data that Paizo coul collect from their site, the print run of the PFRPG would probably be much smaller than it was. Also, I doubt any subscribing customer of Paizo would welcome any reduction of the rebate offered only to accommodate Hobby Stores which are not in their vicinity anyway. Also keep in mind that Amazon is selling PAIZO Products at a price that is incredibly low. (The PFRPG costs way less with Amazon Germany/UK than any Hobby Shop located in Germany would be able or willing to offer (difference of 5 - 15 Euro, depnding on local price ranges). If Paizo is no more willing to sell to them (due to their prices in comparison to the prices regular stores (have) to offer), then they would loose a big customer. If they cut the discount that they offer to their subscribers (who probably would not subscribe if a LFGS was in their vicinity who stock their Game (enough to meet most demands), than they might be hard pressed to explain why, with the result that these people most likely turn to amazon. So no matter how you put it, your FLGS will loose that bidding game. Only way arround, they have to offer perfect service by explaining the specialties of any game that they sell, and offer a faster and better ordering service than most do. After all, there is always a reason why customers turn away from them and toward online shops. Any one of you people who have read this post till here, thanks for bearing with me and my rumbling thoughts. Jörg ![]()

I can't really agree with the above. The argument that there are not enough variations in challenges seems to me like an excuse. The first thing that comes into my mind as one variation of a challenge is the possibility of political challenges. This offers a lot of options. Politics: - defeat the opponent on the political platform by regular means (programs, alliances, etc) - have him assassinated - frame him - discover the skeletons in his basement and make them public - have him kidnapped and sold into slavery to a place far far away The above leaves many more options, just take a deeper look at real world politics all over the world and times. Although, some decisions might lead to Alignment changes. Fighting of "regular" bad guys in battle: The opponent do not need to be out of any Monster Manual. There is always the option that they are of any kind of regular 11 Character Classes (plus Prestige Class options) and Races out of the Core Rules (and a few races out of the Monster Book - Tieflings, Half-Orcs, Giants, Ogres or even a high level Orc or Goblin (OK, that might be a little bit rare, but why not). If it works with Queen Ileosa as aristocrat 2/ Bard 16, enhanced by the Crown of Fangs, then it will work with any other higher level opponent, or a group of opponent, like a band of evil high level monks, figthers, mages clerics, bards, etc.
The main opponent does not have to be a Queen or King, he/she could also be "just" a (bandit) General who threatens the Town. His army might be defeated by the Towns or lands own army (maybe led by the PCs), but the leader and his cronies are not accounted for and must be captured before they return with a new army. Also, The king, queen or Leader of the town or province must be protected against any assassins that might be send against him/her. Another Option is to infiltrate the opposing army in order to wreak havoc and demoralize them before the "good" army attacks. (OK, here might be a problem with the point of "convoluted stat blocks eating up too much space"). The above are just a few examples as I wrote this. I am sure that any good, experienced writer can come up with a few more opponents/situations that do not include Demons, Devils and Dragons (except as hired help) to challenge a 15 - 20th level party. And as someone has already mentioned, this might not be part of an AP but can be done as a "sequel module" to an AP (which might also be played as a stand alone). ![]()

Hi, James and Hello Folks, All 5 mentioned reasons make sense. But I do have to disagree with point 1 and 4. Here are my thoughts: 1) Covering the level-range into 6 month: Why not just have an AP that starts with Level 4 or 5? Incorporating higher Level PC's into an AP is easily done (At least GameMasters have less problems with that, then adding another self made Adventure in order to bring the group up to Level 20 or 21). Taking in account your statement that Adventures for Levels above 15 are harder to design, well, at least myself would be willing to compensate that effort with a higher price. As in regards to 4)"overwhelming majority of gamers prefer mid level adventures" I cant judge on that since I don't have any statistics on other gamers preferences, but at least my players are ALLWAYS complaining that the AP does not bring them to a Level where they can send their characters into retirement (20+). I personally would gladly welcome an AP which ends at Level 20, at least once in a while. An alternative would be a single module that starts at 15 and ends at 20, which could be incorporated in to an AP, although James is probably right here; its most likely that that one would not sell very well. On the other hand, an AP that starts ant 4th level and ends at 20th... can't imagine that such a one would sell less that a regular AP 8 At least once in a while, say every 3rd or 4th AP Any other thoughts or opinions?
