xdahnx, I have now gone over Dustwind, here are my comments: 1. It looks like you only spent 18 of 20 points on ability stats. Here's my breakdown... STR 16 (10 pts) +2 racial =18
2. Stealth should be +7 (math error, looks like) 3. Intimidate should be +8 (Intimidating Prowess feat) That's all I really see mechanically, although I would eventually like to see a description and background when you get time.
Kevin, I took another look at Norn, and I think she's just about ready to go. The only thing I am questioning is your placement of the Gnome Obsessive bonus skill points. I think it's just meant for the two extra points to go into one skill, from the wording: 'Gnomes receive a +2 racial bonus on a Craft
I don't think they can be divided between two skills. Sorry about that, I didn't make it too clear.
bref_weapon, I went over Worthel, and have a couple of comments... 1. He can take +1 hit point or skill point for leveling in his favored class (assuming Bard is his favored class) 2. Rapier damage should be 1d6 3. His Perception should be +3 (+5 sight/sound-based), and his Profession (Sailor) should be +3. Other than that, he looks solid. EDIT: Whoops, one other thing...you listed his 0-level spells per day as 3, but actually he can use those without limit.
Aaron, Thorgrim's skills look much more like what I expected now. However, there are still a couple of discrepancies I have, due to Armor Check penalties. I believe Ride is subject to an ACP, and Swim incurs a double ACP. So, I have his Ride as -2 and his Swim as -6. I think technically, Knowledge (Engineering) is not a class skill (I think?), but it makes sense for the character and is in no way game-breaking, so I say leave that one alone. Only other discrepancy is that his thrown javelin damage should be 1d6+2 due to STR bonus. That's it!
Aaron, Okay, I've looked over Thorgrim, and I need to ask about a couple of things. 1. Thrown javelin damage should include his strength bonus. 2. The skills are looking a little wonky to me. I think that you don't actually get to claim the +3 class bonus to any of the skills that you haven't actually assigned ranks to. So, as far as I can tell, several of your skill totals are too high. Again, though, I'm learning the ropes of the PF RPG. Anybody else want to take a look at Thorgrim's skills and help me out? Am I on the right track?
Kevin Mack, thanks for taking care of those issues I raised. As of now, the only issues I see for Norn are some skill point matters. I think her Handle Animal total should be +6, and her Survival and Knowledge(Nature) should be +8 due to the druid's Nature Sense. That should do it for her, but I haven't gone over the animal companion yet. edit: I lied, one other thing...damage for a slingstone used by a Small character is 1d3, not 1d4.
Kevin Mack, I've started to look over Norn's sheet. Mostly, it looks good, and I haven't finished the whole thing yet, but I did want to call your attention to a couple of items. 1. Norn's hp should be 15, because the Toughness feat gives an extra 1 hp per hit die. 2. Gnomes get 2 'Obsessive' skill points to put into a Craft or Profession skill, so you can go ahead and assign those if you want to. I'll let you know if I see anything else.
From the most recent comments on the other thread, it looks like bref_weapon would prefer to play Worthel as a bard, while xdahnx is leaning toward playing Dustwind the rogue. So, that would make the party look like this: Dustwind, Half-Orc Rogue (xdahnx)
We just need a decision on Rew's class choice. If he's a ranger, it gives the party some more toughness, if a wizard, more magic. It's up to you, MD. :) One observation: no humans in the group. I haven't seen that in a while. EDIT: Ninja'd by MithrilDragon! Alrighty, so the party consists of: Dustwind, Half-Orc Rogue (xdahnx)
Sounds good to me!
Valkyrie Paine wrote: And I love Ulli's speech patterns. :) Thanks for the compliment, VP! I'm hearing Ulli's voice in my head with a very cheesy Norwegian accent, but I'm still working on trying to translate said accent to the written word. I'm glad it's fun for others to read, even as a work in progress.
Norn as an initiate of the Greenfire Circle makes a lot of sense. Does she normally operate out of Darkmoon Wood, or has she recently relocated to this part of the Vale for a specific reason? I should also point out, in reference to the animal companion that a wolf is probably a bad choice for the region. Darkmoon Vale has a lot of trouble with wolves, worgs, werewolves, etc. If Norn is wandering around with a wolf at her heel, she is likely to be scorned and distrusted at best...maybe even run out of town...or worse.
Okay, all, here are my thoughts so far on character concepts and backgrounds. bref_weapon: It's fine with me whether you want to take Worthel in the direction of either bard or rogue (I suppose it depends on whether xdahnx decides to play a rogue). In either case, the background is apparently similar, he's a man on the run. Riddleport is a long way from Falcon's Hollow, though. Is there a specific reason why he has ended up in the logging town, as opposed to somewhere else? Aaron Whitley: I'm happy with Thorgrim's story. It makes perfect sense that a dwarf with possible ties to the old settlements in Droskar's Crag would wish to come and explore the area. Most likely, he'd be staying at Jak'a'napes, the only real inn in Falcon's Hollow. Of course, all the action happends at The Sitting Duck tavern, so hopefully he hangs out there too. Mythril Dragon: Rew is a fine looking halfling ranger or wizard! And...that's about all there is to say so far. I am interested in whether he is a traveller or a native of Falcon's Hollow. xdahnx: Great backstory ideas for Duskwind and Morova. You could go either way here, and I'll be happy. Looks like Mythril Dragon is waiting for your decision to make his, so it's on you to decide. From the standpoint of party balance, it looks like you might choose Morova, but you should go with whatever seems most fun to you. Kevin Mack: Looking forward to seeing your gnome druid! Any backgrohnd thoughts so far?
Good deal, looks like things are coming along with your characters. Please keep in mind as you work on backgrounds that Falcon's Hollow is a rough-and-tumble, backwoods town that exists pretty much solely to support the lumber industry out of Darkmoon Wood. A couple of you have come up with really good reasons to be in the area, but everybody needs one in their backstory ultimately. You could be a native of Falcon's Hollow, or a newcomer. Kevin Mack wrote: I take it you would be using Jasons Pathfinder update for animal companions as well? That's correct.
Telos Greygrin wrote: I would like to play as well, if there is still room. Ack, Telos, you're too late by literally five minutes. As you may have seen in the interim, I closed my recruitment and accepted the five players who got in ahead of you. I would be most happy to consider you the first alternate though, should any of those others decline the offer.
Hey, more people, great! Let's break down the roster of potentials so far. 1. bref_weapon
Y'know, um...this post has been up a whole day now, and the five of you have come up with some great ideas already, and you seem like good players... Ah, screw it, I'm leaning towards just closing recruitment right now and rolling with the five of you. Anybody have any objection to that? Just one other point to raise: Can everyone commit to about one post every weekday, and maybe one post on weekends as well? (Should have included that question in my first post, sorry.) So what do you guys say? We got a party?
Great! I'm happy to see some interest. I'll keep a list of names of those who have replied: 1. bref_weapon
bref-weapon, as for your question about Traits, I would be open to using them. The only problem I see is that as of right now, they are only described in the Second Darkness player's guide. Since that is not a free product, it's not fair to assume that all players will have access to it. I think I'll probably wait until the players have been determined, and then we can discuss it and see what the majority want to do.
Hey all, Having been inspired by Rimrock (and many other fine DMs around these parts), I have decided to try my hand at DMing a PBP on these boards. It's a Darkmoon Vale campaign, using the modules starting with Hollow's Last Hope. Check it out right here if you're interested. Thanks! /hijack
Hi all, I'd like to wrangle up five players to jump in to a Darkmoon Vale campaign PBP. This would be a PF Beta rules affair, starting out with Hollow's Last Hope, and onwards from there into Crown of the Kobold King. If we get that far, I'll be happy to continue GMing further adventures in the Andoren region. I'll be new at GMing PBP, but I've done a lot of lurking around these boards (wonderful examples and inspirations abound!) and have run face to face games since the early 1980s (The red Basic edition was my induction to all things D&D). Some preliminary details (always subject to change): -PF Beta rules (we'll use Jason B's Design Focus rules updates for things like Barbarian Rage, Paladins, etc.) -1st level PCs -20 point stat buy -Average gold (not max) -Max 1st level hit points (standard rules) -I'll make combat maps using Maptool and host them on Flickr. -To keep things moving, I'll handle some die rolls for the PCs using Invisible Castle (Saves, Initiative, passive skill checks, etc.). -Players will handle their own active die rolls using Invisible Castle (Attack/Damage, most skill checks, etc.). -If interested, please include a 2-3 sentence character concept in your post. This isn't a binding contract, it just helps get the creative juices flowing. -Recruitment will remain open for 2 days. After closing recruitment, I'll pick five players via random draw. Only five. (I don't want to get in over my head). -Feel free to use details from the PFCS, Guide to Darkmoon Vale, or other Golarion-friendly sources in conceptualizing characters. Those are my thoughts at present, but I've likely forgotten to mention something. So please feel free to make comments and ask questions. Thanks for checking this out! -Dave
French Wolf wrote: Sorda may need protection. I usually play wizards and sorcerers that can take care of themselves in a scrap. This one is much weaker in than respect so Ulli's protection would be good. Would enlarge person help in return? Coo, FW. If Sorda's ever shared a story and bought Ulli a drink or two, that's probably all the motive the big fella needs to tag along to the Golden Goblin. Consider it done, Ulli and Sorda can arrive together. Still, an enlarged Ulli could probably wreak all kinds of havoc, so we should definitely try that out sometime. :)
Kelne wrote: The only question is what poor soul has him along to look out for their interests? My money's on Ulli. Well, Ulli's not really going to the tournament as a serious gambler (the big lug always boozes and whores away what little money he makes as it is.) He's attending to try to impress the owner with his brawn and score a better paying job...and maybe a comely serving wench too. Zavos is the optimistic gambler of the bunch...maybe you and Scribbling Rambler can put something together?
Rimrock, Ulli's character sheet is done now (I think!). Just let me know if anything needs any correction or clarification. I wasn't feeling Prof: Gambler for Ulli, either. Drinker, yes. Wencher, yes. Brawler, yes. Gambler, not so much. Looks like Zavos the bard will have to roll the dice for all us non-wagering types.
Scribbling Rambler wrote: DD, I'd also be happy to take a Bard, if we both make it in. No sense re-statting Ulli. lol, no 're-statting' would be required, since there hasn't yet been any statting to begin with. :) Ulli's just a concept at the moment, but I have a pretty clear vision for him in my head. It's probably a bit of a 'viking' or 'Norseman' stereotype, but that doesn't mean it won't be fun! :)
Hi Rimrock, I'd really like to get in on this! In fact, I've been looking around for a while waiting for just such an opportunity. I've been playing D&D in some fashion since 1982, but 4e just isn't quite my bag. So, I'm looking for a chance to try out Pathfinder Beta...haven't been able to drum up much interest in a face-to-face game. Here's hoping your pbp game will be my chance! If you'll have me, I'm leaning in the direction of playing a relatively straightforward tank...maybe a fighter, barbarian, or paladin. I'll need to delve into the beta rules more thoroughly. I'm available to post pretty regularly throughout the week, and some on weekends too, if that helps. And I'm totally in favor of anything you want to do to help keep the game moving. Should I go ahead and start work on a character, or would you rather hold off on seeing how much interest you have? In any case, best of luck with this game! Should be a good one. -David Nichols |
