Thank you all for your support; I appreciate it! No worries about the time/date of an audio Discord Meeting, but it's something I'd like to do; though we have a bit of time to do it, I suppose. Mal - actually, I teach. However, I can't work as the schools are closed. Therefore, the County I work for has allowed those people out of work due to the schools being shut down to have temporary jobs. Currently I'm working that temporary job :)
"Wherever I have been, I am back." - Gandalf The White I apologize for my absence. Things have been complicated in my life due to personal issues. While I have not formally returned to work, I have been provided with a temporary job assignment which has me working at 5:30 AM until 2:00 PM which started last week (I have today off, luckily). I am adjusting to that schedule, but the exercise and being outside (I am doing outdoor work; it's not easy, but not difficult, but it's fresh air and bright - albeit hot/warm - sunshine) is doing me good. I am going to go back and re-read the posts on the board and then do what I can to get things started again, but expect something later tonight. Thank you all for your patience and I hope to talk to you soon! PS - Discord allows for Voice Conversations. I believe we're all on the formal Discord Server. At some point I'd like to do a group chat to help get a sense of what's up and how to make this more fun for all of us; it doesn't have to happen at once, but it's something I would like to do as I think that text-based communication is complicating our communication skills. So if everyone can start considering a time when we can all do a "group chat" that would be great. "Expect me when you see me..." - Gandalf The White
I've been dealing with a lot lately. The stress of quarantine has been really hard for me; as well as financial and personal issues. I do my best to get by, but I've had to see someone due to how it's effecting me personally. I will say that I would like to get back to playing, too. Restarting anything when there's stress is not easy for me at this point. I will be okay coming back, hopefully, but I'd like to be sure that when that happens everything is as positive and upbeat. If you guys are still out there and interested in playing, please let me know. Thank you.
Hey guys, I'm going to be AFK for a bit, so I may not be able to post. Also, I may end up trying to make a new Discord Server for the game. As it stands, I feel remiss in my duties as GM in that I'm not creating/hosting the server myself. But more on that when I get a chance. Sorry again for the delay; the virus is making things a bit complicated right now. Talk to you all soon!

Samir turns from Talar to look at Mal, saying nothing. Instead, he merely watches Mal for a long moment. Mal Steelcutter wrote:
Samir smiles widely at that, but his eyes are flat as he does so, his gaze not leaving Mal. He speaks, but when he does, he speaks to Talar. "I am not as versed with the folk of the north; tell me, do you know if it is customary for a man to be so critical to the host of a home he is a guest in?" Mal Steelcutter wrote:
Samir's smile turns crooked as he continues to watch Mal, his eyes remaining flat, yet a sardonic gleam is now in them. "Good Talar; if I bought you a loaf of bread to share with you and, upon biting into it, you found that it was filled with venom, do you suppose you would not at least ask me why it was that I brought you such bread?" "In any case, he has spoken already at his choice to change allegiances for the promise of greater coin. We are well off, but hardly wealthy as others. What if others were to offer him greater coin?" "I do not say he will betray us for more wealth, for I do not wish to offer insult, yet no matter, for he himself declaimed it; though, for some reason, you personally are vouchsafed from such a decision; though perhaps he does not share such camaraderie with others of us yet?" "Surely you see why I might mistrust a man who offered such claims about himself, at least until I had seen clearer proof of his sincerity beyond a first meeting?" He turns to look at Talar and cocks his head when he does so continues to speak. "It is true, I am not so well-traveled as other men. Yet I know at least one northern axiom, for it is oft spoken - Praise not the day until evening has come, a woman until she is burnt, a sword until it is tried, a maiden until she is married, ice until it has been crossed, nor beer until it has been tasted - aye, indeed," he says with a shrug. Mal Steelcutter wrote:
Samir turns from Talar and looks at the ceiling a moment, as if thinking something. "Talar and I have stood askance before, yet we have spilled blood together and I am loathe for naught but hard words to sunder that faith. You suggest I insult him? Hmm... Then I can only respond and say to you this; mayhap you should let your friend decide if he is first insulted before you elect to lay that claim?" Then he turns his gaze from the ceiling and speaks to Mal directly. "To answer you truly, I shall say this - if my brother behaved the fool I should surely tell him; for he is my brother, and if I saw him error it would be remiss in my fraternal duty to refuse to correct him." "A brother - a good brother - has no fear of truth from his kin. Further, though it may be that my words are not as laced with lavish praise as others, surely a true brother would, after cooling from hot speech a bit, respect that even such statements were meant not as an attack, but rather, a means to improve his lot in life - if he indeed acted as a fool." "Yet you spoke of a stranger?" "Aye; very good," he says with a small shrug. Samir leans back comfortably in his chair, his hand casually adjusting the hilt of his weapon as he does so. "If I saw my brother act a fool and a stranger called him on that action; and my brother truly had acted a fool, assuredly I should agree with the stranger and add my own opinion to the lot, for I do not care for foolishness, and less so when it festers in my family." "Yet in any case, were a man to insult my brother I should do naught but watch my brother, and see how he responds. It may be that my brother wishes to slay the man for this insult; in which case, I may aid him in the task, if my brother's honor was agreeable to this." "Another thought is that it may be that my brother is simply used to speaking to certain folk a certain way; for not all men are as flowery and prosaic with their kin as others." "Even so; I would yet watch, and wait and listen. That is often the wisest course, until one learns the nature of a thing, especially in the company of strangers." His hand casually taps the hilt of his own dagger in a thoughtful cadence, then rises easily from the table and seems to stretch a bit, then he smiles at Mal as his hand rests easily on the hilt of his weapon. Mal Steelcutter wrote: "Say you, friend Talar, is it time for mid-day meal? Perhaps a slab of smoking viands is called for?" Samir's eyes glance at the table with the plates of olives, figs, dried breads and drinks and then he turns to Talar. Talar Drealev wrote: Talar frowns at Samir. "Mal is his own man. I hope things go well and he does not have cause to betray us, but if it comes to that I cannot take the burden of making the decisions that he chose to. Simply the inevitable responsibility it will be to hunt him down and deliver him to the god's mercies for daring to put me further from my sister." Samir strokes his chin thoughtfully, as if considering something, then he responds. "You hired this man to aid you in finding your sister. You know I support you in this cause, for whatever grievances a man may have with another, surely all men can respect the love a man has for his family? Indeed, I left the others to come with you for that very purpose." "But I say to you this; you made the decision to hire this man; thus, I deem you are already satisfied that he is no spy nor threat? For he sits now in our home, sharing our councils and this so shortly after our recent trials." "I accept men fully when I have reason to do so. I was unsure in the tavern; yet I honored your choice." "If it turns out that he is true, I have no quarrel. If he proves false, surely you will not be surprised if we others ask - of all men you might have hired - why you chose him, instead of another?" he presses, the question not seeming critical, but rather what Samir seems to feel is a normal recourse. He shrugs and smiles a little at Talar. "Yet while it is wise to be wary of a thing untried, it is wrong to judge a man traitor until the deed is done." "Do not mistake me," he says in a conciliatory way "I do not say you are at fault for his actions, I merely suggest caution in who you bring into our private councils, at least so soon, for you know clearly the troubles we are beset with." "In any case, I am not used to guests speaking as he does to those who invite them into their house and offer food and drink. Perhaps that has effected my judgement somewhat," he adds with a wry tone. He then looks at the company directly. "We have learned many things this morning, yet I deem a good amount of those things have given rise to new questions. That said, I wish to go speak to that priest Darius, for he seemed learned in lore when we spoke last to him." "Further, that Thoth-Apep - he has the manners of a scorpion and the guile of a viper. That he mistrusts Darius gives me hope that this man might be useful in deciphering our recent troubles." "The day is young and it is only two hours past noon. Would any wish to come with me to speak this man?" he says, then pauses to see if any will come with him. Farrokh, who has remained silent throughout, his dislike for Samir obvious to all who know him, now turns to Paten. "Your pardon, lord; but if this guest of our friend Talar is here to honor his request to find his sister this may be a blessing?" "Surely he is more versed with parts of the city more accustomed to more... unconventional... methods of speaking," he says with a glance at Samir, who rolls his eyes at Farrokh's words, then he turns back to Paten. "Our company is a like a many-fingered hand; when clenched together we may do hard knocks as a strong fist. Yet in certain times, to evade the tooth of a cobra, is it not wise to spread the fist into well-splayed fingers so to avoid the fang of the serpent?" he presses. Samir grunts at Farrokhs words. "What do you mean?" he says, his tone somewhat impatient with Farrokh. "Only this," Farrokh responds, turning his remaining eye to look hard at Samir. "Some of this company are more accustomed to certain places and have our own needs, besides. Yet all of us are of like mind that it may be wise to expand our knowledge in more locations in this city." "Further, if we fear that we may be watched, as - indeed - we no doubt are; it is wisest to divide, for moving in smaller groups is a better way to allude the eyes of a predator, rather than congregating in a large company," he says in a patient voice, but with a touch of condescension to respond to Samir's lack of understanding, or intentional inability to grasp what it is that he had suggested. Samir grunts in response at this as Farrokh's good eye narrows. "Very well; that seems wise," he says at last. "I am of the mind to go to this priest Darius and consult with him, for whatever troubles we may have, he has no guile in him." "Talar wishes to explore avenues to find his sister; yet, no doubt, as he does so he may seek to find further details as to the rogues who we faced two nights ago. Their purpose; plans, policies and if they have allies yet in the city unmarked." "Surely while he seeks his sister he can add that lot to his questioning, and so we may yet pool our knowledge more wisely." Farrokh continues to watch, but it is clear on his face that his opinion of Samir restating his own suggestion annoys him. Even so, he does not say anything on the matter. Instead, he looks at Paten and speaks to him directly. "My lord, the temple that this priest Darius is in may be a good place to search. Yet mayhap you might wish to visit other regions? The... the woman we were to have met with the other night?" he says hesitatingly, not divulging full details on that conflict yet "she was versed in poisons, and we saw them to great effect. Further, her, her companion - he was an Ikuna warrior; they are not frequent here, yes?" "You are versed in elixirs, tonics, potions and other such things. Finding out where the poison was acquired, or produced, may prove useful in learning more of her purpose? And those used to the Ikuna folk may be better at finding were those sorts frequent?" he adds then offers a quick glance to Yasala. "In any case, as this brief reunion has not been as gracious as it might, perhaps another walk in the city may cool our heads and give us more experience with each other?" he adds. At this point Samir will leave to go to visit the priest Darius and take whoever wants to go with him. Farrokh has wisely pointed out that when Talar goes to the seedy places of town to ask about his sister he might offer in additional questions about the cult you dealt with. Farrokh would not say it openly, but he assumes this is an excellent avenue for questions - to ask about the cult outright could draw attention. To suggest that a cult might have captured Talar's sister (while likely incorrect) would encourage a stranger to assume that Talar seeks the cult simply to find his sister, and no other reason. It is clear that Samir is not very pleased with Mal; that may change in time, but certainly not at this meeting and how the conversation went. Farrokh, as he has pledged himself as a servant to Paten, does not offer his opinions on such matters openly without being asked (as on most matters, actually; with the exception of his annoyance with Samir, but the grudge between those two NPC's has been clear for some time). However, his suggestion that the party split up again at this time seems reasonable. Of course, there are lots of avenues in the city to pursue; obviously more than I suggested. You are all free to search where you wish and if you have any further suggestions then let me know. But Samir will go to visit Darius and Farrokh suggests (though he does not say he wishes to go there outright; he will follow Paten wherever Paten goes) that those used to the seedy part of town may want to get further information on that cult; while visiting places that sell poisons and handle alchemical goods might be a good place for Paten himself to explore (though that's just a suggestion; anyone can go with anyone, and no one has to go anywhere at this point; merely a set of suggestions).
Samir has said nothing; watching the interplay between the company with veiled eyes as Mal elects to use Bjeorn's tongue. Though he does not seem to follow the words, his eyes are intent on their new guest and he seems focused more on all of the other actions the man is making, despite the language that is used. When they switch back into a tongue that he seems to understand, then picks up his drink and sips at it, but when he hears of the overt mercenary habits of the man, his fingers tighten on the goblet, though he says nothing but listens. When Yasala finally speaks, he does not take his eyes off Mal, but listens to her, watching him carefully. Mal Steelcutter wrote: Leaning over to Talar, he adds in a stage whisper, "Does your friend not speak the common tongue?" he adds legitimately, having not heard her speak a word he can understand. "Perhaps some hired help from the southlands? Confound she's not a cannibal is she? Trying to refine the noble savages?" At the mention of the confusion from a foreign tongue, he leans back in his chair thoughtfully, his eyes moving from Mal to Talar, then back to Mal. He glances at Yasala, curious to know how the woman will respond. Yasala wrote:
At her words, a small, sardonic smile graces his lips, but he says nothing for a moment, waiting to see if she or another will respond. When no response is forthcoming, he rolls his head on his neck and then straightens, studying the man. "You talk a lot for a Northman, at least, far more than any tale I have heard," he says, finally speaking. He reaches for the plate and picks up a date and pops it in his mouth, chewing thoughtfully. "I am not overly familiar with the Northern folk, but I have never known one to put such much value on coin... Aye, and that a northman would fore sake an oath over gold, no matter how much..." he adds, shaking his head slowly, his eyes not leaving the man, then turns to Bjeorn. "It seems the tales of your folk are not as accurate as I thought," he says, then shrugs. He turns back and takes a long, slow taste of the drink, watching Mal for a while. "You said Talar is the one who has hired you to do a thing. Well and good; you serve him, then?" he asks, somewhat rhetorically, still watching and thinking. He then looks at Talar. "We have spilled blood together and in that time you have not betrayed me or or any of our company; though, maybe, not all of your actions were very wise," he says with a toneless voice, then grunts. "You are vouching for him, then? Should he go astray or do wrong, you take his choices on yourself?" he adds, still studying Talar, as if seeking what the man will say in response. He leans back in his chair, his attention now focused on Talar, clearly curious to see what the man will say.

To clarify a bit: 1. It's not a sin that you weren't in the party since Level 1, most of the players weren't. However, to clarify - generally the RP in this game takes a bit of time to develop. From an In-Game dynamic the party is dealing with multiple issues of having to cope with threats in the city - most notably they had to deal with spies following and hunting them; political intrigue, bounty hunters and assassins pretending to be something other than what they are - not to mention brushes with dark sorcery, summoned demons or, at least, some form of aborted dark god from below the realms of mortal men called forth to do battle under the auspices of a high priest who commanded a dark cult. Given all of that, I don't think it seems very unreasonable that that before they embrace you as a comrade it takes more than one or two posts to develop some bonds of trust between you and them might occur via some Social RP. 2. While it's true you've just joined the party and are formally a PC, they're writing their character dialogue as if they don't know you're a PC, if that makes sense? Your guy has a good bevy of skills that he could be attempting to use to try to figure out why they're being so cagey; however, it's likely that their characters are acting a bit stand-offish at this point because they seem like most people I know when they're having a conversation with someone and that person deliberately switches to another language (and when some of them know your language, what you said wasn't very flattering). That said, I'm aware of the difficulties of a new player bonding with a seasoned group. However, at this time you're hired to do a job for Talar. You've met people who either hire or work with Talar; they don't seem to be very trusting of you and almost seem a bit cagey/suspicious of you. If this happened to you in real life, what would you do to help make the situation better? What I mean is; if you want to be included in the group (especially given your stats and skills) how would you respond to get them to like and trust you? Honestly, all I can say is that from what I'm reading I don't think it's meant to be personal, it just seems like Social RP. Also, I feel like it will go much smoother than it might with your guy than a normal NPC, but I don't see much harm in taking a few posts to get two Southern Noble/Scholar types to feel comfortable with a Northern Barbarian type. Why not try rolling with it for a bit as your character? Toss up some Diplomacy Checks and try to at least flatter them, or get to know them better in game? As I said, from what I'm reading it seems like it's just Social RP. If it looks like it's becoming a personal thing I will deal with it, but for now I'm curious to see how your character responds to it from an In-Game dynamic.

The party then moves quickly through the streets until they return to the mansion. There, they are greeted by Kara Ben, who instructs the servant Bast to aid the important people out of the litter. He then informs Jiya to prepare you refreshment by fetching your company a platter with a bowl and some clean towels to wipe the dust and grime for yourselves before entering the house proper and make sure you are comfortable. You observe that Hanala and S'bu are not present and Kara Ben informs you that Hanala is attending to guests in the main dining chamber while S'bu is standing by to aid - but, also, to demonstrate a presence should the new guest try anything untoward. "I did not wish to turn away our guest; yet he came in the presence of your companions who are... less civilized. As S'bu had little to do at this hour, I thought it advisable to place him with the others as a precaution," he says with a cordial bow. Then he awaits your orders. The company is now free to enter the house as they'd choose and share information with everyone and formally meet the new player as a complete team!

Bjeorn is not surprised that this man seems to be ignoring him completely. A common error made by so many "Civilized" men; to underrate the potential and power of the Barbarian... However, you notice that his guards are more focused on you then anyone in the group. Clearly they see you as the most obvious threat. While none of them seem interested in challenging you openly, even by posturing or making subtle threats toward your person, it's clear that when they study your group for danger, you are the prime target. Yasala wrote:
Thoth-Apep barely notices Yasala's shrug, he seems to be focusing his attention on Tairin and Paten. You do not know, but you suspect, that whatever game he was playing via his lecherous ways is something he's chosen to abandon in order to more focus more on what really matters; specifically, how the others are reacting. Tairin of the Veils wrote: When the high priest was done, an expressionless Tairin stood, careful of Sabra still nestled and hiding inside the shawl pouch before her, and politely responded, "You have given us much to think on, Hem-Netjer-Tepi. We will consider your words and ponder the images within. Thank you for being concerned with our welfare and for your hospitality. We will take our leave now. May the remainder of your day be peaceful, Hem-Netjer-Tepi." Tairin gave a cordial smile and bowed her head in due respect before gesturing for Bjoern to move before her, leading the way out to the awaiting litter. Regarding your final Diplomacy Check:
Ending it on a "Pleasant Note" can have so many meanings; pleasant for you, for him, for the purpose of decorum? For now, I'm going to translate that to "pleasant for YOU!" (and your party). This is because, while decorum and decency would normally a nice way to end a meeting, you'd know that with this guy you can't rely on good court manners; he deserves something more... direct... So, ultimately, despite what his response is, know that it was actually a good ending for you guys :) Thoth-Apep's eyes narrow at Tairin's veiled ruthlessness and the implied threat that the companions would now be thinking about him and his people, perhaps more than they might have. The guards glance nervously at each other as your party turns and makes its leave, uncertain as to their master's wishes, but Thoth-Apep says nothing, the narrowed expression quickly evaporating as he recovers, a bit awkwardly, and nods his head graciously at your leaving. Patenemheb Sitayet wrote:
Sense Motive:
So Tairin's final response, it seems, has made Thoth-Apep nervous. This is a delicate situation. On the one hand, Thoth-Apep was certain to watch you whether he was nervous of you or not; that he is nervous means he might be cautious how he watches you, a potential bad thing - HOWEVER - Thoth-Apep is also UNCERTAIN of you, and your power. How can he be truly careful with your party if he doesn't know your strength? He might send a spy to watch you; but perhaps you could use some dark sorcery to discover his spy? He may attempt to call on some demon to divine your purposes - but you may counter it with the power of some dark god who could unmake the demon and obliterate him in endless agony... No; as Thoth-Apep is uncertain of your true power you believe that he won't try to spy you out, not like that, not yet. Instead, you believe his gambit (now that he fears your party) is going to try to make more overtures like the one he just did. That is; invitations to friendly events, such a dinner party or something like that, where he can pretend to be your friend and learn what you're truly capable of. In short; he won't dare to do anything to piss you off, at least until he knows how powerful you really are. Also, if you're TRULY powerful, he might even try to ally himself with you. After all, if you're potentially so powerful, why not be your friend rather than your enemy? In short; he felt Intimidated by your subtlety but won't respond in a negative way until he knows your power more. You don't need to fear an assassin's knife or spy network for some time; instead, you believe he'll be trying to be on his best behavior when he invites you to events to learn more about you. Of course, such events let you learn more about HIM, so it's not necessarily a bad thing :) Regarding your combined Knowledge Checks - As you settle into the litter the thought suddenly crosses both Paten and Tairin's mind almost at once even as Sabra the cat nods sagely, as if the little beast also heard the vision and agreed in what it might mean. Thoughts on the vision: The vision of Thoth-Apep showed the sun rising in the west - the sun deity powerful in nearly almost all cultures - but moving from the west (and rising in the "left side", left if you faced north), well, you know that the word "sinister" literally means "left handed"; you know that moving backwards is often considered bad/evil/chaotic - so, if you consider something that typically is good (such as the sun) which rises in the east/right side (typically good) now rising from the west and moving backwards, it seems that this is a sign that there is a good power that is now acting against its nature; against its "good nature" and moving backwards. The appearance of a Black Moon is the real clue, of course; for in the sands you recall that there was a Black Temple aligned to a Moon God. You recall, also, that in the eastern side of the valley there was an unearthed temple that was opened and something came out of the temple which - you believe - slaughtered the entire company of people that were at the dig. You also recall that whatever did the slaughter moved to the east (that means it traveled from the west; perhaps a coincidence, but visions are somewhat esoteric). The temple on the eastern side of the valley was dedicated to a Sun God. Something came out of it; something you feel is evil, very powerful and very dangerous. You do not know, but you now suspect, that the vision depicts a powerful agent of the Sun which has now become black/evil vying with a powerful agent of the Moon (which was black like the temple you found; possibly evil, but it may be a representation of the temple - this part is a minor point, though) but - ultimately - two agents of power; one of the Sun and Moon will now fight each other. That something dark and powerful broke from the Sun temple and moved in the same direction as the Black Sun makes you feel that there is now a dark and hideous threat in the eastern wilds. This threat may pose many dangers, but it must be contested by an agent of the Moon. You recall, also, the words of the ancient priest within the Black Stone Temple to the moon, indicating that the Moon God, the god of Vengeance, desired champions. Vengeance against an agent of supernatural "good" (such as the Sun) which may now be acting "evil" seems like the perfect conduit for such a calling and you now believe there's more to this than you expected. It should be noted that the vision does not reveal who will win such a fight between the two forces...

Quick Aside; if you go on the "Campaign Page" and scroll down you'll see a detailed synopsis of important NPC's the party has met. Some of those NPC's are your allies, such Farrokh or Samir; others are in your employ, such as Kara Ben or S'bu (those you employed have full stat sheets; your allies, you don't fully KNOW their stats, but you might be able to get those stat sheets for Samir and Farrokh by the end of the "in-game month" which will be passing quickly once this part of the Social RP is set up - provided you're really interested in knowing their stats and details). The final NPC's are simply Images of the people you've met in Game - some might be enemies, others allies, others are simply important people - but I put up pictures of what I think they'd be like (an important part with the pics; I do my best to find someone who I not only think will look like the NPC, but mainly, if you see that person on the show/movie I found the image from, their personality "in-game" is supposed to be a reflection of that personality type. So, for example, Samir's pic is Daario Naharis, a character from Game of Thrones. So if you're familiar with Daario Naharis from Game of Thrones; his personality and attitude and so on, you have a pretty good idea not only how Samir looks, but how he'd be acting) For those of you familiar with Netflix's version of "Sabrina" the priest Thoth-Apep's personality is based largely on the personality of Father Faustus Blackwood. If you know the character, you'll have a much better idea of how Thoth-Apep is meant to act/sound. It should be noted that not ALL of the NPC's have images from shows/movies that will help you understand their character - some of them are right from the book, others are pics that I thought were cool. But ultimately I hope that it will help you better understand what they look like and how they act. When your trio arrives at the house you are greeted by the guard S'bu, who seems somewhat suspicious of your group. It doesn't take much to note that S'bu clearly does not trust Samir; but as he has no reason to refuse Samir, he nods to Talar and lets your company inside. There you see the head servant, Kara Ben, whose quiet dignity is somewhat put aside as he hurries to intercept you at the courtyard, offering you water to bathe your feet or boots so you do not track dirt into the house proper. He bows graciously to your new guest, but seems somewhat suspicious to see three mercenary types inside the walls, no matter how trustworthy Talar and Samir may be. Nevertheless, he instructs Hanala to take you into the dining area and provide you refreshment while the others go about their business. In the house proper you are given plates with dates, figs and a platter of flat bread, still warm from the clay oven. A pitcher of fresh wine is on the table, as well as a pitcher of Yar-Ammonite beer. It should be noted that like a proper Irish stout - the beer is thick and rich enough that it could be a meal of itself. But beer is common in this region, more than wine, as grapes are not as plentiful. "Enjoy, m'lords," Hanala says as you are free to snack while you wait for your companions to return.
Tairin of the Veils wrote: Tairin continued to smile as she answered politely and rather undisturbed by the implication of his words, "Perhaps, having fulfilled his goals in the city, Master Zheng-Ya returned to his rightful place," courteously inclining her head to Thoth-Apep. The comment earlier about the Sorcerer was obviously a lie (at least, to him) but he read it as an OBVIOUS lie - that is; your comment about the sorcerer was so laughable that he was MEANT to know you were lying - that you WANTED him to realize you wouldn't give him details, but had no problem in letting him know something terrible happened - though he has no idea what. In short, it's like if you told a mafia boss about a good friend of yours who was cut into six pieces by a chainsaw and the mafia boss smiled and said - "Sounds like a terrible accident... I hope no more accidents like that happen to anyone else..." - basically like that; you know that's a lie, but it's clear he wants you to know it's a lie. Hence; especially via your natural 20 earlier, he's genuinely unsure of your power and is likely prepared to share some actual information, simply out of his uncertainty... He places his hand to his chin and strokes it uneasily and then shrugs. "Ah; yes - in the presence of your beautiful companion I had almost forgot..." he says with a nervous smile, then his eyes go flat and he speaks in a more serious voice. "I did indeed have a vision to share with you. I do not know its full meaning - yet - but enough to share the words," he says, and you believe that this is true. That the words will be enigmatic enough that he doesn't mind being honest with you. His eyes slit, as if he is thinking deeply while studying you all for a reaction, then he speaks: "I saw a gray sky and in the westerly horizon I saw the sun begin to rise... else it was moving backward... Yet the sun rose in the west and moved on its journey ever eastward until it reached its zenith above me... There, from some strange place I saw sliding across the sky the moon... The sun seemed to shine a strange, white color and flames licked from its pale circle while the sky, ever gray, somehow grew more dim and almost loathsome... Then the moon slid across to the sun and blotted it out, like an eclipse... and so I saw the rays of the sun, long like serpents, writhing about the moon - and together they seemed to strive with each other.... Black Sun - Black Moon..." "Then there was the sound in the air like thunder, or drums of battle... and then I awoke," he says, a scowl on his face, as if he did not relish sharing this information. "That was the summary of the vision. I knew not why I was to seek you, but for the whisper in my voice to seek the masters of the house of Zheng-Ya... I sent my people to that place and now you are here. And now you know the vision," he says with a flat voice. He then watches you all for a response.
Patenemheb Sitayet wrote: "My kinswoman has a great talent for detail. It is as she has said: we sought our people and could not be certain of all events out in the dark desert. Such an unfortunate waste of life, from your telling of it. My condolences for those innocents lost." You cannot detect any traces of poison at this time. You do not know, but you assume, that he is not going to attempt anything so obvious on your first meeting. Thoth-Apep inclines his head in an absent-minded way, as if he is merely attempting to demonstrate a return of courtesy to Paten, but not at all truly concerned with the loss of life, despite his earlier claims. Yasala wrote: After the others are done speaking, she steps forward. "My Lord, I also sympathize with you for the loss of your men. Azimba is a violent place and I am well used to losing men, and whether they be servants or companions it is still something I do not wish on anyone." Continuing to keep the calm tone of a diplomat, she continues " I would not normally ask for a boon upon our first meeting but what I have heard of the slaughter in the desert sounds like it could be their work. Perhaps if you had knowledge of Azimbanan groups in the area you could be kind enough to direct me where I could investigate, and if it was the traitors of my kinsmen in the desert last night I would of course bring that information back to you." "You are wise not to ask for a boon from a stranger," he says with a slight condescending tone. "Nevertheless - as you request my aid - I believe we can come to an arrangement," he says with a small leer. "I shall put forth my resources to acquiring information for you. Do not trouble yourself over a price - for now you may simply consider yourself in my debt," he says, a gleam in his eye. Tairin of the Veils wrote: "Indeed, you are correct. With time, we shall come to understand the heartbeat of this great city and find our sure footing within it. Is this not the way with all new citizens? When we have your esteemed guidance and benefaction, I am certain we shall prevail, Hem-Netjer-Tepi." Thoth-Apep's face and expression become flat as he turns his eyes back to Tairin. "Indeed, yes," he says with a dry voice at her comments about requiring his guidance. He leans back more comfortably and studies the party for some time, his eyes moving from Paten to Yasala absently and almost intentionally avoiding Tairin before he finally turns to look at her last. "There are many threats and dangers in the city, and surrounding it. A wise man will study those things before him closely before acting, though," he says with a slow, measured tone. "You are in the house of the late sorcerer, an easterner, as I recall. His absence is noted, yet whatever precipitated his leave must have been something of undue power," he adds, his eyes watching your party flatly. Then he smiles brightly. "Well; it was good to meet with you all again. I am certain that we shall grow very lose in time. Until then I urge you all to visit me whenever you wish; I will be delighted to take you on as visitors at any time." At that he rises and it seems that the visit is concluded. Whatever it is that he wanted to learn, it seems he has learned it, or at least, he believes that he has. He pauses to watch you and you sense that before you leave you are free to make a last query or comment as you wish (or skill check).
Tairin of the Veils wrote: Tairin placed a steady/cordial smile on her face and responded in steady politeness, "You are a most considerate host. Some refreshment is certainly welcome," even as the man's face was fixed on Paten at her exclusion. I was reared to master such politics, high priest. Let us begin. At her inner thoughts, Sabra inside the shawl pouch, rubbed her small nose against Tairin's abdomen in a show of accord. The priest inclines his head politely, studying Tairin intently as she speaks... Sense Motive -
Opposed Sense Motive Check on him: The guy is very suspicious of Tairin. The fact that he can't read her has him nervous. His suspicion is that likely that she's more powerful than he assumed. This is not so unlikely - she's been in town less than a week and has already taken over the house of a powerful sorcerer. And now the reports in the desert? He didn't believe she was that important; but now, he's certainly not sure. His suspicion in her power could be used by those cunning enough to use it. Good luck!
Talar Drealev wrote: Dain GM, to clarify, Talar does not think he has the skills to do this himself. He is not good at disguise and he is very bad at lying, so he wants to find somebody else that he can hire or otherwise convince to play the part. I thought this would be an excellent opportunity to bring in our new player as well, since he is skilled in both of these things. New player is a fighter type - I had something in mind to bring him in; however, his intro was likely going to take a while. So; here's what's up - you can meet him at Abu Khafi's - you and Samir know it, relatively, it's a good place to meet shady people. You'll meet your new boy there; he's a Northman, sticks out like a sore thumb - toss out a Diplomacy Check (it will either Aid or Samir's Check will Aid yours) to rustle up a person willing to aid you as your go-between. During your questioning of potential trouble I'll have the new guy overhear the conversation. Whatever his background is, I'll also have him touched by your story (or the promise of coin) enough to tag along. So Out-of-Game if you bump into a new Northman while looking for aid, it's him. Samir's Check to find your new guy to aid in finding sister (either you'll Aid him or vice versa, depending on your roll) -
As you look, you notice a strange Northman overhearing your inquiry that moves to your table... That's the new guy's queue - good luck! EDIT: Samir rolled badly - your move; remember, this is just to find a new Aid in finding your sister so as long as you get at least a 10 your Aid nets a 16 - not bad, but not great, but we'll work from there. The new guy will join you automatically, hopefully, but please RP it out.
Talar Drealev wrote:
Talar; for this I'll need both a Disguise Roll and a Diplomacy Check to gather information. Instead of Disguise (or to augment it) you can roll Bluff, too. The higher roll will be chosen, the lower roll (if it beats a 10) will grant a +2 Circumstance Bonus. Samir doesn't know the city that well, but he will happily function as your bodyguard for such proceedings. In this case he will not need a formal Disguise, as his "role" will simply be that of a mercenary/sell-sword in your service. Toss up the Disguise/Bluff Check (if you want to purchase gear to improve your Disguise chances, you're free to do so at this time; expensive/wealthy clothing will improve your check by a +1 Circumstance bonus, but it will cost roughly 1/3 price of a MW sword). Once you do that, toss up Diplomacy Checks - each check will equal 4 hour. It should be noted that the DC will be very high, but each check stacks via circumstance bonus. So, for example, if you search for 8 hours and get a 12 and a 17, your total would actually be a 19 as the first hour beats a 10 and grants a +2 to the second hour. You should be able to do 2 checks today; 3 if you're willing to push yourself (the last one you'll be able to do, but you'll be "Fatigued" and you may want to let your friends know why you were absent so long). Okay; toss up those checks and let me know what's up. Sorry for not posting this sooner, I've had a very complicated week so far and it was tricky to remember everything.

Low roll, so it's difficult to gauge exactly. You are not sure, but you'd wager that the guards you're dealing with are likely Level 4 Fighters of some type - which Archetype you are not sure; nor are you sure on their stats. You could take them, likely, but the fact that the man has so many of them - and so well trained - signifies he has power and wealth. Besides, you don't know how many more there in the area that you haven't seen yet. Oh; the weapon and armor they are geared with seems like MW quality to your eyes...
Answers to Tairins Questions:
What is your general impression of the Yadaran priest, Darius Turan? Is he a man of his word or someone who does not care for the plight of the people of this city? Darius is not very well known, but those who do know admit he is both very intelligent in lore, and very honorable. He is not native, but a foreigner. Some say he was a soldier before he pledged his life/honor to become a priest. Despite this, he is certainly a pacifist, at least discouraging any of his people to practice combat. Those who know him say that he is a generally a good man – for a priest – and is typically considered to be doubted by many as his adherence to dogma and religious practices seem more out of a commitment to ritual and tradition, rather than any specific belief in higher powers. All agree he is extremely intelligent, however. Is Darius Turan a man of some import in the city? Who does he consider his friends and which people or groups do not like him? Darius is not very important, per se. His temple is small, he has few followers and very little wealth. However, it is known that, on occasion, visitors from the bey have visited him privately, some believing that they seek him as he has knowledge and wisdom and is generally prepared to share knowledge. He is often distrusted, but the matter is somewhat ironic. He does not typically sell information; rather, he shares it as he seems to feel part of his duty as a priest is to be an educator. This makes many suspicious, because the amount of knowledge he has could be sold for profit – the fact that he doesn’t sell his knowledge makes people wonder what his true motives are. Many wealthy and noble people look down on him, but the rumor is that because he is not someone who does things for money, they are suspicious. If you cannot buy his loyalty, how can you control him? However, even those who consider his attitude somewhat strange admit they have never known him to break an oath. In short, you’d gamble this guy is likely a LN or possibly LG; further, you suspect that he MAY be a Scholar LV 8/ Fighter: Lore Warden LV 4, but you are not sure – it is possible he may be something else versed in combat, that last part is complicated as he does not fight. A better role would have given a clearer answer on his levels and possibly stats, but that may be learned after meeting him yourself. How long has he been living and instructing the Yadaran faithful in Zul-Bazzir? Are his followers peaceful or more inclined to arouse trouble in the city? He has been in the city for roughly five years. His followers are typically peaceful, but that is complicated. With the recent complications against the Yadaran church, his followers feel threatened and angry – younger members agitate for outright action and violence against people who give them problems. However, Darius always tells them to abstain from violence. Some say this is his honor talking – to teach his members to turn the other cheek. Others say it is merely good political savvy; his church is small and could easily be overwhelmed and destroyed by any number of enemies. If he wants his church to prosper and his followers to remain safe it is wiser not to give an enemy a reason to attack you. Some suggest it is a combination of those two reasons and others postulate wild theories in which it is neither – that he is some sort of madman, or he is controlled by a demon; these theories are ridiculous and the sort of thing suspicious fools in a market would say. They do not seem likely, merely give credence that the common man is uncertain how to deal with his attitude and personality. Also, and generally, Tairin wants to get an impression of his personality, general habits, customs, dealings with others, his integrity, likability, power status and honesty... That will help her in how she approaches and speaks with Darius. Thanks! Okay, that's all I'm going to post from my phone to conserve battery until my power is back on later this afternoon. Then I can post more, if needs be. Hopefully the above information answer this last question. You trust his honesty; but he does what he can to maintain the integrity of his church/temple – ironically you are not certain if it is because he is a devout follower of his deity, or committed to honoring the dogma of the church for an unknown reason – either way, you believe him to be extremely intelligent, honorable, non-violent, a survivalist but with little actual power in terms of coin or military status. Tairin of the Veils wrote: "Please announce the arrival of the Lady Tairin, Lord Patenemheb, esteemed envoy - Yasala of the Jul-Juggans of Zimballah and their guard to the servants of the House of Thoth-Apep." Tairin remained in the litter with the others; casting a quick glance at Bjoern waiting by the litter, until Farrokh had knocked and advised the head servant of their arrival and intention to meet with their master. The servant, seeing the procession, quickly turns and bows. However, you are also conscious that there is a small company of four armed men outside the temple proper. These men were the livery of the priest, and carry long, curved daggers at their hips and hold short spears at their side. You can tell that their weapons are well made and well-tended and you do not believe they are merely for show. Tairin of the Veils wrote: "Greetings, Hem-Netjer-Tepi Thoth-Apep. It is good to meet you once again. My sincere apologies for not visiting earlier in the day - as you can most certainly understand, there is much work to attend to when running a great household. I, and my companions, are grateful for your patience and gracious invitation. You are familiar with my kinsman, Lord Patenemheb, and these are our personal guards. This fine patron is Yasala, an emissary of the Jul-Juggans of Zimballah and our guest in the city. She expressed a sincere desire to make your acquaintance. I hope you do not mind." Tairin gestured elegantly toward Yasala and then waited until she was given leave to sit by the master of the house. As she waited, she added courteously, "Your messenger, Hoteth, said you had matters of great import to discuss with us. We would be glad for your counsel." Thoth-Apep is at once an extremely charming individual, who is also one that is – somehow – very off-putting, though you cannot be sure how, or why, specifically. The man seems to radiate a natural sense of charm, however; and whether he is using that charm to inspire you, intimidate you, or simply speak to you – whether you are swayed by him or not, you are at least aware of the very power of his presence. While his power in the past was large, this is somehow greater than before, and a bit more unsettling. Upon seeing you he inclines his head a casual, albeit polite way, certainly not as one would treat an equal. ”I am, of course, delighted to make the acquaintance of your friends,” he says, intentionally speaking to Paten, even while his eyes rest thoughtfully on Tairin. This move makes you think he is somehow treating Paten with greater reverence as Paten is male and Tairin female – however, it also is a subtle thrust to negate some of Tairin’s “face” by making her seem less important, despite her titles. ”Before we begin business, I insist on refreshment. You and your companions look positively famished,” he says with a polite voice. Yeah; that’s kind of a sham. He’s basically implying that the trip to his house has you worn out; you can’t handle the modest journey through the streets, your gear/goods are so poor that you clearly need his help. Offering food and drink is absolutely good manners to guests, but the WAY he does it makes you think he’s offering scraps of food to starving street urchins. Again, nothing he says is obvious or rude – but it IS certainly spoken in such a way that makes you feel as if he’s either mocking you, or – more disquieting – baiting you. Of course, if you DID respond to baiting, in his own home in front of witnesses, that could be a problem for you… Response to Checks – Diplomacy to make favourable impression and demonstrate impeccable social manners: 1d20 + 14 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 14 + 2 = 32 Clearly impressed by your manners; you suspect that how he is treating you (albeit somewhat irreverently) is because – if you rolled lower, he’d be treating you with more obvious contempt. In this case you suspect his contempt is far more subtle – in short; nothing you can call him out for, he’s not being openly insulting – you can simply feel an undercurrent to his tone and attitude. Perception to notice anything of note re Thoth-Apep's appearance or facial expressions: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (18) + 14 = 32
Hopefully the above description answers these questions Stealth to observe Thoth-Apep discreetly and without drawing attention to herself: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (8) + 17 = 25 You did well; but you suspect that is because he is not giving you enough attention. In short; you believe he does not respect you very much as a threat, so he’s not really spending much time to study you properly. Yasala wrote: Yasala continues to remain silent, waiting to be addressed as an envoy would, but keeps her eyes and ears sharply peeled for any information that can be gathered while the nobles negin to parley with the priest. Perception to notice anything of note re Thoth-Apep or his servants: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28 Servants are discrete but extremely well-armed and armored. Odd for servants to be so well protected. Those who serve drinks/refreshment do so almost with the movements that suggest they may be in some sort of trance, you are not sure, but they act far too emotionless for your taste – even for slaves. Sense Motive to detect any discrepancies in his speech and gauge his intent: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27 This guy is very shady indeed. You don’t trust him at all; but he IS very polite and generally very courteous. You’d think LE at first, but somehow you’re not sure – the “Lawful” part COULD be a ruse, but if so, it’s very well done. Patenemheb Sitayet wrote: "Greetings once again, Thoth-Apep. I am curious to hear what words that you have for us, that are of such import." Thoth-Apep could turn his gaze on Paten directly. However, though he answers him, he turns an almost casual, wandering eye to study Yasala, almost in a curious way – but under the curiosity you can sense a perverse lecherous gleam, coupled with a cold, somewhat off-putting smile. ”I am ever so glad you came as my guests. I am disappointed it took you so long to respond, but, no doubt, you will be able to move with greater speed through the city when your status and condition improve?” he says, with an almost conciliatory tone, but there’s no mistaking the sly undercurrent to it. ”In any case, as you are guests in my house, I should say that I am delighted to have you here. But there is business to attend to. Specifically, I heard your company was seen near to one of our holy sites in the desert was. And that – regrettably – some various people of import in the city, including my own humble servants, were found slaughtered,” he says with a look of sorrow and pain at the loss of the lives of the important guests and his servants. But you feel his sadness is just a bit too melodramatic; he’s not truly upset, merely expressing the polite actions of a man who is upset. ”The bey will likely hear of this tragedy, if his men have not already reported it. Yet my sources indicate that there was simply so much blood and carnage there… well, certainly you are not capable of performing such destruction,” he says – Tairin, Yasala and Paten; your Sense Motive and Perception Checks combined reveal this quick observation which you may want to share with your friends while in private. Observation:
He downplayed your talent; he claimed you guys couldn’t have killed all the people at the dig and is suggesting it must have been something or someone else – but for a very brief moment he looked at your face, studying you – watching your reaction. You think he’s masking it well, but though he’s marginalizing your talent to make himself seem more powerful, you suddenly realize that he himself doesn’t know if you did the killings or just came up at the last moment. He’s not sure and he’s trying to read your reaction to gauge if you did it based on what you say, what you don’t say, and how you say/don’t say things. ”I am certain that the authorities will come to me soon for my own report. After all, my own people were slain – and the loss of property as well – but I wished to meet with you first, as you were eye-witnesses to the killing, and so gain your opinions and observations. In this way I can allay the concerns of the authorities when they question me,” he says with a sly smile, a cordial nod of his head and then leans back and waits to hear what you will say. He is looking for answers, but be careful how you phrase them as the GM will remember. He said you were “Eye-witnesses” to the killing. Were you? Did you really see it? He’s looking for information, true – but he has no problem in implicating you in things depending on how you answer him. Diplomacy to position Patenemheb's status appropiately in Thoth-Apep's perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32
Your combined observation for being followed indicates that there was a collection of street children following you. One would follow you for a few blocks, then slip into an alley. Yet as soon as that child disappeared another would appear from the same alleyway and continue to follow you for a few blocks. This pattern continued for some time until you reached your destination. Given the twists and turns you took, the frightening thing is that – unless the children knew your destination in advance – this system of swapping observers suggests that they would have to have many children spread out through the city in many alleys and corners, ready to receive and intercept different people to track you. This suggests a very hard to identify spy network, but – even more disturbing – one that is extremely large, given how well they were spread out. In short, he’s waiting for you to give your report on what happened at the dig sight. Outwardly he claims he wants this information so he can provide an accurate report to the authorities; you suspect that is a veiled threat, he wants this information more for his own ends then giving a damn about who was killed. Finally, if you answer him indelicately, he could use your answers against you. Remember, too, as guests in his house he’s not going to do anything overt to hurt/harm you – but he is likely also baiting you to do something that could cause problems for you. If you haven’t seen the show, I don’t know if this will help. If you have seen the show, the priest reminds you very much of this man here - Link –
At this time I like what I see; however, before confirming anything I am hoping to get feedback from the other players so I know what they think. I want to make sure that new players mesh well with the group; the more feedback I hear the better we can merge him with the group as a whole. If the others can toss up their opinions I'll read their comments over and then I'll offer my own feedback to merge things together. I'm eager to see what everyone has to say, and I hope to see what the others think soon! Once I have their comments I'll put up my opinions and we can merge him in :)

Talar wished to undertake his own private inquiries, so myself, Paten, Yasala and Farrokh will be meeting with Thoth-Apep. Firstly, I must see that Bjoern has new armour or an order is made with the local smithy. Then we meet up with the others and ride to the Old Town. This afternoon, I wish to meet with Darius Turan in the small Yadaran temple in the city." Samir nods his head. ”I can help Talar if he wishes. As for this priest? When you search for armor for Bjeorn asking a few questions about his nature, if you do not know already, might not hurt… but that is just a suggestion.” Tairin of the Veils wrote: Calling out to Farrokh, "Please hire a carriage for us - Paten, Yasala, myself and Sabra will travel in it to Thoth-Apep's house as fits our noble and esteemed positions. You and Bjoern can drive and guard us, as always." ”With respect, noble born, there are no carriages for use inside the city limits. However, I can certainly hire you a litter so that slaves may carry you instead?” he asks. Not a big deal, just an RP thing; the streets are windy and there are many stairs and twists. It won’t effect much to use a carriage vs. a litter; but I mention it only to remind everyone the streets are not easy to navigate, Tairin of the Veils wrote: Dain GM, what do you need from us now? However, while writing this, it occurred to me that it may be that you’d like to have some follow-up information on the priest. If you have any specific questions you’d like to ask while shopping then feel free to toss them up and a Diplomacy check. You’ll automatically get answers, but the higher the roll, the more trustworthy and detailed the answer. You don’t need to ask anything, of course, but any questions that occurred to you personally to ask; this is the time to do so, if you’d like. Patenemheb Sitayet wrote: "Samir, I am glad to see you intact. Though I have little to add to the other's comments." ”Many thanks, my friend,” he says cordially and pops a date into his mouth and nods. At this time Farrokh will hire out litters to carry you around. Further, Samir will make a suggestion to Talar at this time after the others have left… Suggestion to Talar: ”You have tried many conventional methods to find your sister. Do you have anything that might belong to her personally? A ring, token – perhaps a lock of hair?” he asks after the others have left. ”It is somewhat unconventional, and perhaps even dangerous in certain ways, but it is written – When your sword breaks, draw your dagger… – well and good!” ”You cannot find your sister by asking men simple questions. Have you considered not asking men? Perhaps you may find an Oracle or a Diviner who can use sorcerery to discover her presence?” He says no more on this unusual option, instead, he waits to see what Talar will say before offering follow-up suggestions.

Hoteth looks at Talar in confusion, his eyes flicking to Paten and Tairin. Sense Motive DC 14 or Knowledge Local DC 10:
Talar is clearly from Khazistan; this guy is clearly from Yar-Ammon. Tairin and Paten are from Yar-Ammon and have declared both their power and rank; Talar is clearly garbed as a warrior - that is; not a noble/priest/magi. Despite the fact that the Khazistani people are the predominate race in this city, given the huge advances in civilization over the last several centuries in Yar-Ammon, most Yar-Ammonites feel a sense of superiority over other races. In short, he's surprised that Talar is telling the noblewoman and the priest/magi (he doesn't know what Paten is, but he suspects either a priest/magi - though, to be fair, in Yar-Ammonite culture a priest or a magic user is almost a de facto noble) things rather than asking them. It's nothing overt or even spoken; he just seems more confused is all, but he's certainly not complaining, just confused :) Bjoern Ghostbear wrote:

Gazing over at the messenger she continues "You can tell your master that Yasala, envoy of the Jul-Juggans of Zimballah, will be accompanying the Lady, but I cannot answer as to when. The timing of our visit will depend on her desire." Taking the room in with a relaxed and almost aloof manner, she glances quickly at Tairin to prompt her to continue. Hoteth pauses to study Yasala thoughtfully, a curious look on his face. "As you will, lady," he says with a small bow. Knowledge Nobility 12 or Local or Geography 15:
The man is courteous to Yasala, but not as much to her as Paten and Tairin. This is likely because A) Yasala did not declare herself a formal "Noble Born" but merely an "envoy" and B) he is more predisposed to support people from Yar-Ammon as opposed to other cultures. In short; your Bluff worked, but he's still going to show more support to people of his own Culture - but that's not a personal thing. The more foreign a person is from his homeland, the less likely he is to support them. Tairin of the Veils wrote: "There will be five attending the meeting. Lord Patenemheb and I, the esteemed envoy, Yasala of the Jul-Juggans, and two personal bodyguards, Bjoern and Farrokh. And, of course, my Sabra. We will be pleased to meet with the honourable high priest in two hours time; giving us opportunity to take care of some personal matters before the long ride to the Old Town. We thank you for delivering the message." Hoteth bows graciously before Tairin. Knowledge Nobility 12 or Knowledge Local/Geography 12 and if you made this check for the other spoiler you don't need to reroll:
Slaves bow to all Freedmen, typically, when accepting orders. This bow, however, is more formal and one given to people of rank/power, such as yourselves. In short, you believe that the Diplomacy Checks made earlier have convinced this man that you are, indeed, quality people and he is now acting accordingly. Tairin of the Veils wrote: Tairin then rose steadily, taking care of her general motion, and gestured for the major domo to enter the room, "Kara Ben, escort our guest to the gates and then gather the servants in the dining hall for further instruction." She gave a purposeful nod and then turning her gaze and smile on the aide, she added upon his impending departure, "I bid you good ride, Hoteth. We will see your master at noontide." "To hears is to obey, Noble Born. I shall inform my master of your response," Hoteth says with a gracious voice, and then turns and prepares to leave, pausing only as he notices that Tairin is summoning someone to escort him to the gates. Kara Ben nods at Tairin. "By your leave, lady," and takes the man outside. The company then prepares to make their plans for the day, even as Bjeorn returns from the chambers above. Bjoern Ghostbear wrote: "I am ready to go!" Even as Bjeorn returns there seems to be some noise at the door to your chambers. Looking up you see Samir is pushing past Kara Ben with an almost impatient gesture. It seems that Kara Ben wished to formally announce Samir's entrance while Samir didn't feel he needed to be announced and just felt like entering. Seeing the group at the table he strides in with a purpose and flings himself into a chair. "Greetings," he says, and then pause a moment to take a gulp of whatever is in the nearest cup by him and then wipes his mouth with the back of his hand and lets out a loud gasp of relief, as if he was doing a bit of work that left him thirsty. "I apologize for my absence, but I wanted to gather a bit of information this morning," he says, then takes some of the bread on the table and dips it into the bowl of honey and cream and munches a bit lustily on it, as if - in addition to being thirsty - he's quite hungry. After he consumes the bread he takes another drink, wipes his mouth again, folds his arms on the table and leans forward to speak. It should be noted for those that forgot that in the past several days Samir's gear has changed. He now has what looks like (to those seasoned warriors) a MW Steel Scimitar and dagger. Even those who are not familiar with the MW quality of the weapons can observe their is gold on the hilt of sword and the dagger has a silver handle and sheath. His clothing, while a bit dusty, is now fine linen; and he seems to be wearing what appears to be MW quality Armor - (Studded Leather, in fact). Wherever he's been and whatever he's been doing, he certainly has found better gear than what he had in the past several days. "First things first; our friends at Abu Khafi... it seems that there was chatter that one of his regulars had been killed by the captain of the guard and he died valiantly defeating her - others say that she and her southern mercenary ambushed the captain of the guard... there is already an uproar over the incident because - it seems - the captain of the guard was somehow related to the leader of this city." "I believe this is a strange thing. The killing was only last night, and done in a quarter of the city that is not frequented by many well-to-do sorts and, generally, avoided. It was discovered rather quickly. That it was reported quickly is no surprise; whoever reported this thing likely did so to gain some sort of reward from the local authorities as the dead guard captain was well-connected." "I do not know, but I would guess that either the sound of the fight drew the attention of locals and they came to investigate the leavings to collect what the dead had for their own purposes. Or," and here he looks a bit nervous "or... someone was following the woman from Abu Khafi and noticed it right away." "If anyone during that fight was followed is it possible that everyone in that fight may have been followed... be cautious, the streets are full of eyes," he adds glancing around the table. He then leans back and takes another sip of his drink. "Now, I should add; all of us are aware of the fight a few days ago, including the amount of animals that were left behind?" He shakes his head and tugs on his beard with a bit of nervous frustration. "It seems a man has entered the city with quite a bit of war-trained camels and some horses and has sold them. I do not know who the man was; I only know that he had an unusual bow and kept his features hidden or masked." "I asked the vendors and they told me that he did not wish to reveal his identity and they did not press him on the matter, considering the amount of animals he was selling they did not want to upset a good business opportunity... Indeed, one of them told me that the man selling the animals was a fool who did not even haggle on the price... This may mean he is not a native, for no true native son would accept the first offer - but it may also mean that he was trying to offload them quickly so he could convert them to ready coin before folk started asking questions." He shakes his head. "I only bring this up as it makes me nervous. Mysterious masked men are of no consequence to me generally; but the description of his bow... we have seen a masked man carrying a bow like this in the past, but that was as far back as Susrah... that is a long way, and it may only be coincidence, but given all we have endured as of late I am not confident in mere coincidence." "If he is the same man that would mean he has followed us since Susrah. Further, if he is the practice of following us then that means he may have followed us to the tombs, though perhaps he may not have... in any case, someone would have been close enough to the bodies to collect the animals quickly and sell them so quickly after we left... again; it may just be a coincidence that this happened, but I would guess that whoever was there just in time to find those beasts certainly was not wandering the desert by supposedly haunted tombs just after we left by good fortune." He leans back in the chair and studies you all. "Did I miss anything of note?" he asks your company. Feel free to bring Samir up to speed on this. Also, it seems that he is at least familiar, or becoming so, with the less reputable parts of town. If this is correct then if the party splits he may be able to help Talar if he is going to look for his sister directly? Tairin; when you go shopping for Bjeorn you do not believe anyone is following you at this time. As for being ripped off; you detect nothing more than the standard haggling nuance - the vendor offers 20% more than the value, you insist on 20% less, and this goes back and forth for some time until you reach the actual "book price" (though you can RP it out to try to beat their haggle price and possibly get it for cheaper; though a lower roll will result in buying it for a higher price. Let me know if you'd like to haggle any purchase or simply settle on the RP nuance of getting the eventual book price at this time). Regarding armor for sale in this city - the town has for sale the following Armor in normal and MW type: Padded; Quilted; Reinforced Tunic; Leather; Hide Shirt; Parade; Studded Leather; Chain Shirt. All can be found in MW condition if you pay for them. Under Medium Armor it has Armored Coat; Chain Coat; Hide; Scale Mail; Breastplate; Breastplate Agile; Chainmail - all of them can be found in MW/steel. Heavy Armor includes Banded Mail; Half Plate - both can be found in MW (you don't think they use much heavy armor here because of the desert heat). Shields include Buckler; Shield Light Steel and Shield LIght Wooden (they do not seem to have heavy shields as it's a place that values cavalry). It should be noted that this place does not have much in the way of "Eastern Armor" as it's much further west. However, if Bjeorn brings a reliable Smith the remains of his armor it is possible the man can attempt to duplicate/craft a new set for him. This, however, will take time - possibly weeks, maybe longer (depending on the craftsmen's rolls; but certainly much faster than standard book Crafting Rolls as he IS a professional). As it is custom it will cost roughly 30% more than the standard price (though that can be negotiated if you go this route). Bjeorn; if you want the Smith to craft you the armor, that will require another Diplomacy Check to find a reliable Smith and (if you want) another one to haggle to get the price down. Tairin - given your earlier checks, I will allow you to roll those rolls now, if you'd like - but this assumes Bjeorn will want a custom-made suit of armor. In either case, he'll likely want something now to outfit himself with. Samir glances around the table. It's clear you're ready to go and do what you planned on, but this bit of information may make you consider how you proceed or any last orders (including where you'd like Samir to go, or any other follow-up questions you may have for him) before you leave.
I'm curious to see your sheet for perusal, Mal! Meanwhile, Conan was interesting sort. As you probably know, when Howard wrote him he operated under a strange emerging debate in Anthropology which relied heavily on the distinctions between various races, including the idea that as man evolved from Chaos he lost innate parts of himself that were superior in terms of strength, endurance, speed and animal cunning. These traits receded as the comforts of civilization wore them down. The whole basis for such evolutionary patterns between races has been debunked by modern science, of course; but in Conan's case, it was clear that while he was certainly more powerful in terms of body than the typical Civilized man, he was either unique as a Barbarian (Howard also made it a point to never let us see any other Cimmerians in his short stories; it would erode Conan's mystique if we met others like him, so we can't know how unique he really was) - or if ALL Barbarians had more than a natural animal cunning, but also a keen intellect. In any case, if I was building Conan's stats via our game, I'd wager he had at least a 16 in Intelligence; this is mainly because in nearly every one of Howard's initial short stories we see that he is gifted with the knowledge of the local languages - both in the mastery of their cultural nuances as well as (in many cases) the ability to read and write their languages (though this wasn't really evident in the stories until he became more powerful). I'd also gamble that if I was using Core Rules only he'd be Multi-Class in that he'd have skills as a Barbarian, but he was also in at least three stories as a Corsair/Freebooter/Pirate - as well as a skilled Horsemen and an excellent Battle Commander. Again, I'm sure that is all known to you, though I couldn't resist sharing a little of my own Conan knowledge here as I do enjoy the barbarian character. It occurs to me that having your guy being the "Barbarian Race" type with a somewhat higher Intelligence and Charisma might make sense if you're going that route, rather than simply Civilized. But I guess we'll see when you're ready to go :) That said, sorry to ramble at length and I'm looking forward to seeing your sheet!
Tairin of the Veils wrote: "Greetings. I am Lady Tairin. I, and my kinsman, Lord Patenemheb, are newly acquainted with High Priest Thoth-Apep. You have not given your name and I wish to know with whom I am speaking with, if you would be so kind. Also, what is the reason for this urgency? Cannot this meeting wait until later in the day, for my people and I have urgent matters to attend to in the city this day. I understand your master's esteemed position and I mean no disrespect. Your visit to our home is most unexpected is all." Tairin's voice remained steady and collected for they were in their home and had the position of power on this ground. Her smile was cordial enough - as a lady of the manor meeting with an aide lower in station than herself. The man seems a bit by your comment about his name. "I am Hoteth; a messenger for his Excellency," he says, and his accent is thick with the Yar-Ammonite dialect. "As for the reason of the urgency? I can not speak on the motives of my master; but he is said to be powerful with the ways of Divination and his connections with the city are manifold. Something has prompted him to ask for an audience with him, and at once. As to specifics?" he shrugs. "I obey his will, I do not question it," he says, trying to behave more politely. Patenemheb Sitayet wrote: "Well met. As my kinswoman asked, we would know what matter is so urgent that compels Thoth-Apep to send a messenger here to draw us to him this day?" The man turns a glance to Paten. "Again, noble lord, I am not privy to the desires of his Excellency. He says a thing and then I obey. What more is there than that?" he adds, a bit confused at the questioning. You see no hidden weapons on him, though he does have a long dagger at his hip that is worn obviously. He seems fairly well dressed; his linens are clean and there are no obvious rips or tears on them. You believe he is likely a mid-level house servant or slave. As to the reason you're being summoned? You doubt he knows, or that someone like Thoth-Apep would even consider it worth his time to share that information with this man. To a Yar-Ammonite noble or priest, there would be no reason to share that information with someone like this servant. It's not meant as personal, you don't think, just basically that he was told to get you, and that was it. Talar Drealev wrote:
You don't see anything suspicious or odd around or about the man. As for your Sense Motive? You think the guy came in here with a chip on his shoulder - ready to order you around. Now, after hearing Tairin and Paten speak, you get the idea that he's suddenly reconsidering his initial bluster. After all, while his master is powerful, it's POSSIBLE that you guys are more powerful - or, perhaps worse - that you're good friends with his master and because he's unwittingly offended you, you may tell his master, which could get him in trouble... So now he has no idea how to act, because he's not sure of you, so he's backpeddling desperately to get himself out of a potential jam... He looks at you all. "Who among you wishes to come; and when will my master expect you?" he adds. So far we have Tairin - this is a chance for anyone else to offer to come. Those who don't want to, it's cool; I have something else in mind for you, but that will happen after I get your final answer. EDIT: You are convinced that the man does not know what is going on RE the spell. In fact, you think he's intentionally doing what he can to ignore anything odd so he doesn't seem too pushy via the fact that he's not sure of your formal level of power and status. After all; you DO occupy the house of a former sorcerer known of great power in the city - you must have SOME sort of resources...

The company moves into the courtyard and they observes a stern and somewhat annoyed, officious looking man. He looked at the group before you. "I come from his Excellency, Thoth-Apep. He has met with some of your company before and wishes to meet with them again." "You are advised to make his acquaintance. He wishes to meet with you and I am to escort you," he adds with an officious tone. He intends to take someone in your party to meet with the priest; he does not know who. If none of you will go with him, you can send an NPC if none of you wish to go, but he at least wants someone to go with him before he leaves. If you have any questions for him before you go, feel free to ask as the answers may effect your decision. Also, remember - you can go off on your own to do your own work, but I advise picking a place you'd like to start your search, for whatever you're searching for...
To clarify - 1. I have largely been waiting to respond to see if Bjeorn will be adding in his opinion on what is going on. I have no problem with what Talar recommended for Bjeorn to do, though I would have preferred to have heard it from Bjeorn himself. Basically, the game would have been moving sooner, but I honestly wanted to give everyone the chance to post. However, at this point I'm just going to move forward as it's been too long. 2. Right now there's a lot of chatter from potentially important people. This won't negate the fast-forward time-lapse stuff. However, it was meant to give you guys opportunities to have open avenues for your options to move forward. So, for example, I know Talar wants to look for his sister. While he can do a generic Diplomacy Check to find clues, it seemed logical for him to at least give me a known NPC he'd like to start to talk with or work with. Once I had that information I'd have an idea on how to frame answers and the DC. As it stands, if I get no guidance and just a flat Check, that's fine - but the results won't be as good. In any case, I'll have the campaign page up soon.
Tairin of the Veils wrote: ""Once the meal is done, we shall speak of such matters. For now the servants may return to their usual duties. Farrokh, you may join us at the table, if you have not eaten." Farrokh nods at the invitation as the other servants have been dismissed, the major domo claps his hands and the servants all nod and bow. When they have left, he does as well and leaves you all to your privacy. Farrokh pulls out his chair and makes himself as comfortable as possible, even as he attempts to remain as innocuous as possible. As he listens to the group, when it is appropriate, he interjects. "I believe that the man known as Samir has left the property shortly after sun-up. I heard this from your man at the door after asking him directly if he might know what has happened to Samir, as I myself was curious as to his absence." "Samir did not give an account of where he was going or who he had planned on meeting to the servants. They did not press him on such things as - at this time - they had not been under orders to do so." "I do not know what his plans are, though, or what he is up to. However, I suspect he will return at some point. When he does a message can be left for him, as well as instructions with the servants on how he should be handled?" he prompts, glancing around the table, then shrugs. Tairin of the Veils wrote: If I remember rightly, Osan and his guard stayed the night at the manse since our return from the temple? If so, I'm working on the premise they are still sleeping/resting in their allotted chambers upstairs and cannot hear our current conversation. If they have already left the manse, then Dain GM please advise. Thanks. That was correct. However, they left shortly before you party arose. A message was left for you, however. Farrokh glances at the table near to the northern wall and you see a small parchment with a seal upon it. He stands and brings the parchment to the table and offers it to you. You can see that the seal upon it is consistent with an important house attached to the very padishah. Based on the man's story, this indicates that his claim was accurate; the seal is not open at this time. Given that someone in your company would likely ask to have it opened, I'll just assume it was done in your presence and that the document is either read aloud or passed around the table. The document is in the written regional dialect. It is not encoded, but you believe that is because he doubts it will be read by anyone outside your presence; also, it's fairly vague, and references things only the party would notice. Dear friends - Thank you so much for your aid. While the start of meeting was indeed stressful, by the end I am confident that we were able to move past those difficulties and forge a new friendship. My duty in this place was to observe the master and see to it that his immediate subordinates are not attempting to subvert his authority. The master of the master of this place (and the whom I serve directly) indicates that he feels the immediate subordinates are attempting to stir up trouble. As such, he wishes me to meet with certain folk here and investigate the matter personally. I am currently en route to do that very thing. However, your services will not be forgotten. An aid will meet with you after sunset to enlarge upon ways to show our appreciation. The aid arrives after sunset for more privacy on all involved. If you know of any reason that the subordinates of the local master may be moving against him, and who may need to be watched, please be prepared to share this information with my contact. The more details that are gathered the better things shall be in attempting to close this case. Thank you again for your support; may the gods smile upon you! You all have the chance to make one post each before what is about to happen, happens. What happens after your post to the group regarding the letter... As you all consider the meaning of this letter you are suddenly disturbed by the presence of your major domo who as come into your chambers. He bows his head politely. "Your pardon gracious lords and ladies," he says with a courteous voice "there is a messenger from the foreign priest; one Thoth-Apep. He seeks an audience with you, but I told him to wait in the courtyard for your convenience." He seems a bit nervous, then coughs, clearly a bit uncomfortable with what he is about to say. "It is your home, of course, and he has no rights here - less so as an aid to a priest to a foreign god. Even so, he seemed to be somewhat... uncomfortable... with having to wait on anyone; as if his position or title alone were enough to guarantee his right to be here..." "I do not mean to press the matter on this. I do not care if he waits; I merely bring it to your attention so that you know the sort of man he is - that he is used to being obeyed quickly and without question. You are not obligated to obey him, but such arrogance is surely born of some form of power." "What shall I tell him?"
September 27th
The morning bells of the city had long tolled, yet the party – but for their servants – had slept later than the rising of the dawn. All of them had difficult and dangerous tasks which they had performed the night before, and after the accomplishment of those goals they rested. It was then roughly nine of the clock when there came the somewhat innocuous sound of servants bustling about the grounds of the mansion below. While each person was quartered in a room they could not help but notice the smells of cooking and the sound of footsteps padding about the hallways. Each awoke with a cautious examination of the noise but discovered that it was merely the servants moving about and preparing breakfast to be served in the chamber below. While each member of the party prepared themselves for the day, they soon found the smells of the morning meal too tempting and made their way down into the dining hall. There they discovered that Farrokh was overseeing the servants in a somewhat unctuous way, as if delighted to demonstrate his worth to you all. Plates with dates, figs and slivered almonds were arrayed; but what drew your attention was the scent of the flat bread that was lying to cool upon the bronze plates. Small bowls of honey and cream were near to it, and in the blue glass of the goblets you saw fresh wine. Glancing around you notice that there is no sign of Samir; whether or not your somewhat roughish ally was still in bed or on some other errand you are not certain. Your mind instantly tacks to a sudden thought; while the fresh bread and other fruits were not uncommon in a city such as this, for the time and effort to have been spent preparing your breakfast – rather than simply offering you cold breads and some other gathered oddments – suggests that your servants must have recognized your success and wish to vie for your attention by demonstrating their worth to you on your obvious success. As you sit yourself down the small, black cat Sabra has taken it upon herself to leap upon the table by the chair at the table’s head and there curl up in a small ball, as if waiting for Tairin to sit herself at the chair by Sabra’s side. You notice also that all your servants are assembled just outside the doorway to the dining area as if they are awaiting your notice. You can see that they are dressed well; as if they have put on finer clothes than normal, so that they look more presentable for either you, or possible guests, though you do not notice any guests at this time. Farrokh smiles broadly at you all, and nods to you as you take your seats. ”Greetings, honored lords and ladies,” he says with a deep and almost overly polite voice, the patch around his missing eye having been replaced with one that looks finer. ”All of your servants are assembled and ready for what assignments you may have to offer them this day. All of us know of your various successes in the night, and we each look forward to how we may help you best. For now, enjoy this modest chance to break the night’s fast and then – when you have had time to refresh yourself properly – provide us with the duties that you deem should be best fit and we shall each act upon them to the best of our abilities, no doubt,” he says with a somewhat grand voice. Kara ben, your party’s formal Major Domo, looks a bit put out that Farrokh seems to be orchestrating the meal, but says nothing at this time. Instead, it looks as if he is waiting to see what your orders might be. However, as he waits for your command, he watches you all and then turns directly to Tairin and bows low. ”Whatever orders you have for us, noble born; speak, we are yours to command,” he says. The obvious assumption is not that he is trying to one up party members but, instead, jockeying for position with Farrokh. He knows that Farrokh has known you longer, so he will defer to Farrokh in these matters, but he’s also making it clear that he’s here to help and ready to act to aid the party however he can. You are full HP, fully rested and comfortable. The meal is merely a prelude for you to discuss In-Game, what your plans are. To clarify; it is only the 27th and that is the very day after Tairin went to temple and the others went to deal with the assassin and the nefarious guard captain (who the party slew, along with his personal bodyguards, as per request via Discussion). At this time the game is ready to move forward. However, please let me know what your character is doing In-Game via the Campaign Page. After you write what your character will be doing I’ll give you some information on what comes next.
Apologies for the delay. Last weekend I had a fall during a medical issue; the fall caused me to sprain my index finger in my left hand. While that is not my primary writing hand, it does make it hard to type. At this time it's gotten better. If I'm taking pain meds I can generally type for a decent amount of time (maybe 30-45 minutes) before the finger starts feeling cramped and tense. So I'm using that time now to bring people up to speed on what's up. Regarding the last scene in game: You were confronting a guard captain and his personal/private guards. While his men are wearing the colors of the city guards, it's clear they work for him personally, his own private team of specialist protection. This fight was becoming awkward, and the long break in the middle of combat makes things difficult to deal with. That said, rather than have to RP out the rest of the combat in the MIDDLE of combat, what I decided is that you guys simply make the decision on what to do with the guard and his men. In short, if you want the guy and his men dead; just tell me, and he and his men will die. If you want the guy to be let off with a warning, or bribed - pretty much whatever you want to do with this guy and his men - whatever you decide to do, it will automatically happen. You don't need to roll any dice, you'll be successful in your decision; just be advised that whatever you decide will be have consequences, so keep that in mind when you all make your decision. Moving forward: Once we have the firm decision on the guard captain the game will move forward roughly 1 Month from the last scene. In OLD Dungeons and Dragons (which is where many of the gaming mechanics for this campaign were born from) this would be your "Training Time" - when you had the XP to level up, but you required a certain amount of Down Time to convert that leveling into a realistic process that shouldn't/wouldn't happen overnight just because you killed some tough guys. You guys killed a LOT of tough guys - wiped out a minor deity/avatar by that cult in the desert and dealt with the assassins back in town. You have effectively leveled up; but your stats/changes won't happen for 1 Month formally. During that down time you'll be using your time to improve your condition in town. There are lots of ways to do that, it depends on HOW you want to improve your condition. Improving your condition: You need to give me a loose goal for your character for the next Month via In-Game. For example, I believe that Tairin wants to pursue a position via High Priestess whereas Talar wants to try to find his sister (I'm sure the rest of you have goals, but I'm not 100% what they are, and I'm not even sure I'm 100% about Tairin and Talar, I may be wrong). In any case, whatever goal you want to pursue, please tell me and I'll set a DC for you. You should know that the DC will likely be a ridiculous number, like 50, for example. The reason it is so high is that during your down time you'll be making weekly rolls to figure out how successful you are in your plans. The rolls will stack, with the highest roll you make confirming and the other rolls adding on Aid Checks to it. You can gain more Aid Check bonuses to your rolls if you elect hire out Mercenaries to aid you in your work - the more money you spend on support, the greater your odds at succeeding in your goal will be. If you don't get the ridiculously high number (it's not likely you will, even with bribes and hirelings) that should be expected. The object of creating such a high number is to figure out how CLOSE you to get to achieving it during the downtime. If you get something like 42 out of 50 you may have a modest amount of Social RP to finish the goal - if you get something like 47 out of 50 you may have almost succeeded in your goal. What I need: Hard answer on what you do with the guard captain and his men - AND - once that is completed and you return to your house, what you plan on doing with the rest of the month for your character. NOTE: Once I have the vote on the guard captain I'll give you a brief summary of what happens for that week before you tell me your plans for the month and the week in general so you'll have more time to plan. NOTE: Some of you have asked about making adjustments with your character. I do not mind that, so long as you discuss it with me privately how those adjustments would work and keep your character consistent in the game. Okay, I got to go as my hand is starting to cramp up. Please let me know your thoughts and I'll have something up soon. Thank you again for your patience and I apologize again for the delay.
Tairin of the Veils wrote: This is the new avatar for Tairin :) I like the idea of the new avatar (as well as the look), Tairin. It suggests the change that typically happens at this level and I'm excited that you decided to make that change considering what I have planned for the next stage of the game :) To clarify - I think that there are various "stages" of characters in a RPG character. The first stage is typically level 1-5; when PC's have to deal with things like weather, using skills to find food and resources on the trail, getting to know the various members of a village or small town and learning how to survive. The second stage I see is typically level 6-9; when PC's are situated in a town or city. They likely have a base (be it a house, castle/keep, ship, or whatever) some retainers (be it a mid-level NPC, possibly level 4 and possibly four or five level 1 NPC's as guards or servants) as well as some connections with mid-level nobles (possibly contacts with a Duke or Baron; possible connections with the Sorceress who is the guardian of the forest, that sort of thing) and enough wealth that worrying about micro-managing coin needed to buy food and drink for each meal is no longer important. Also, decorations/trappings of their "base" are now open to more creativity, rather than having to calculate the details of figuring out how much a tapestry costs against the coin you posses - it's now more lighthearted and fun (though, of course, within reason; having a tavern with linen sheets is one thing - having every bed in the tavern with embroidered silk sheets? That may need some explaining ;) The third stage I think is roughly 10-16 - it's when a character begins to achieve the status of a Lord. It's when, generally, heroes are somewhat separated into their own "estates". The Wizard in a tower; the Knight in the castle; the Ranger in their forest keep, and so on. They generally don't worry about minutia of where to spend their coin. Instead, they are required to put out basic fees that take care of the upkeep of their estates and the payment of their NPC's. This is when things like "mass combat" rules for commanding your companies of troops come in to play; and heroes have to worry about things like making checks/roles to see how well their properties do each month. Meanwhile, being level 10-16 means that heroes are now gathering together much like they might in The Avengers or Justice League - teaming up to go on an epic quest to fight off the diabolic leader of some dark army or forgotten cult, and so on. The final stage is when the characters are moving to level 20. By then they're kings/queens of their own nations and they each have their own armies and cities to take care of. They're at that point so powerful that they're no longer worried about buying things (except for the super-rare sacred weapon or armor that is so powerful it's not even available to purchase; you either craft it, or you go on a quest to find it in some ancient temple). And then, gathering all your Artifacts and powers together, the various Kings/Queens/Admirals/High Wizard, etcetera - they're the ones who are now teaming up to face something like a god/ancient one/cataclysm from another realm. The reason I mention all of this is that, at this point, you're heroes have achieved the place when they are now roughly the Second Stage. Your raise of level means you'll be in a far better position and not have to worry about things like calculating the cost of beer in a tavern. Instead, you'll be dealing with a different set of challenges. I hope you find them interesting, and that your characters level with that in mind. That said, I'll have more about them up later today :)
"Wherever I have been, I am back..." - Gandalf the White; The Two Towers I apologize for the delay; due to some personal issues I have been gone for some time. A more detailed break-down on stuff can be found on the Discord server, but I hope this will do for now. That said; the game will continue on our normal pace as of the start of the new year. However, between now and then you will level up. Before you do so formally, I encourage you to consider your options based on what you will see on the boards in the next month. During that time I will be making posts/updates, but on a MUCH slower pace (perhaps only a few times a week, though certainly more with those of you who wish to do more RP via PM to solidify personal quests/ideas). The reason for the slow pace is because the mechanic for this game dictates quite a lot of "Down Time" between quests, as in literally months of downtime in some cases and this is one of those cases. During this downtime players will be becoming more familiar with the city and each other. You'll be getting mainly narrative stuff to give you ideas for how you'd like to have your character develop, so most of what you will see in the coming month with will be story-telling RP rather than the usual Combat RP - very few rolls will be needed, except only to gauge things such as progress on how well your research may be coming, or how many people you impressed in a week via whatever it is you chose to do. Essentially your characters are moving into a more mid-level style of play. You'll still be doing combat; but much of what you'll be doing will have a more social aspect - warriors may end up commanding small groups of soldiers in bigger style "town fights" and more diplomatic types might be gathering allies at the noble court, and that sort of thing - but that will begin to happen later at the start of the new year. For now, you'll be deciding what style of direction you want to progress and - when you decide that - any and all checks will be made to see how far you've come over a period of In-Game months. This will not only provide you with the chance to bond better with each other at a realistic pace, but it will also allow you some breathing room as the pace has been pretty intense. Some of you have personal objectives you've discussed, such as Talar's desire to find his sister. While he may not formally find her during the downtime, he certainly has the chance to begin to develop his contacts and - potentially - begin to create a bounty-hunting guild or crew (baby Yoda's need not apply ;) Talar is not the only one who has long term plans, of course. I've spoken to some of you privately about your own ideas of what you'd like to do - but others of you may have things you'd like to flesh out, or even things you haven't decided on which you'd like to flesh out as the game moves forward - during this month time you'll have the chance to do decide what to do. I should ask that any extensive RP between GM and Player be kept to PM only for the next month so as to have too much on the general board for everyone to read when it may only relate to one or two people. Also, given that much of what you MAY decide to do is likely a Personal Quest thing, having multiple posts on what a person does in their character's private time where all can read it doesn't make much sense. That is; share with the group if you'd like to, but not if you don't want to. In the next few days I'll post a narrative on how the night ended for the party. Before I do that I need to know one thing, however. What do you do with the Guard Captain who was facing you in that ruined temple? I should note you don't have to roll out how this will end; simply tell me what you'd like to do to him and it will automatically happen without fail via narrative. All that will matter is how your choice will effect things in game. As a final note; while this game is built on the premise of gritty and dark, I have been finding that dark style a bit too discouraging. I'm not trying to make things Good Guys vs. Bad Guys, but I think it's reasonable that your characters are treated more heroically rather than simply cut-throat/mercenary types. While dark things will still be there, I'd like the game to feel a bit more positive, if that is okay with everyone? Once I get the answer for the Guard Captain I'll start writing out the narrative for everyone and it will be up in a few days. See you all soon and thanks again for your patience!
Hey guys! I'm so sorry to say that I'm just not having the energy or drive to do the game justice lately. I do not want it to quit, but I really need to get my head back in the game before I continue to play, otherwise all I'm going to do is keep drawing things out with such a slow and poor pace that nothing continues to move forward to where it should. I want the game to continue, I'm hoping that a hiatus will let me get my head where it needs to be and keep going in the future. In the meantime, thank you for the patience and I'll do my best to get things going again soon.
Talar Drealev wrote: Do we get a surprise round? Or are we immediately in initiative? Technically speaking, it's not formally combat. The guy is moved to your party, but no one has actually started a fight or trouble - yet. However, at Paten's words it formally becomes initiative between your two parties as he was merely standing there roughly 20 feet from your party, and they're clearly ready for trouble. That said; Bjeorn, your roll will kick in formally, but first I need someone to roll party initiative... Initiative for bad guys -
The poison is Black Lotus Extract - further details on why/how via Discord. Meanwhile, at this time the onset would not have happened until One Minute afterwards. The first save will fail; the others will reset given that they won't kick in until then - but even so; Bjeorn won't take the poison damage until after the guards come in. Paten: you would have deduced based on the study of the poison it's nature and type before the onset. To simplify things I'm going to rule that Bjeorn will take the first Con Damage via his earlier fail, but that won't happen until 2 rounds into the combat with these guys - and when he DOES make the saves for him, your Heal Check will have given him a bonus to his Fortitude Saves of +4 vs. the Poison. Further, I'll let you stack on top of it your Wise Council if you would prefer to do that rather than actually fight in the combat. That said... As Paten moves to study the wound on Bjeorn he is able to deduce it is indeed poison, and gather the best ways to help Bjeorn take the poison when it starts to effect him and does his best to prepare for that eventuality. Even so, the guard captain strides in to the chamber with three of his flunkies and they spread out in a wide arc at the opening of the chamber. The guard captain eases his legs into a easy stance and his lip curls into a pugnacious smile as he assesses the situation. "By the gods! It is fortunate that I and my men were patrolling the streets with such vigilance, else we would not have discovered this blatant murder!" he says with a condescending voice as he appraises your company. "You are the ruffians who have recently accosted the folk at the temple of Belit-lil and most recently at the houses of the dead, eh? he adds. While it is clear that there was some altercation at the temple of Belit-lil, there was certainly no issue at the temple of Yadar - it's clear he's enlarging on, or making stories up outright, about how dangerous your party is so he can use them as an excuse to take action against you. You do not know his motive at this time, likely he was allied to the woman and planned on taking you in as soon as you delivered the information about the killing you were contracted to do so she would not need to pay you. However, given that she is dead, you can guess no reason he would likely remain loyal to her, at least, not yet... "I did some investigating with your company - it seems you have taken possession of a home belonging to a former tenet of our fair city, a wealthy home it was - but then, you know that..." he adds with a sneer. "You should all be on crosses by daybreak, unless you are prepared to pay the appropriate... fine... for your transgressions?" he adds. It's clear that the man is now trying to sequester a bribe. That he has enlarged on your crimes and mentioned your wealth is a clear indication that he is likely looking for a large sum, though he has not spoken of the figure quite yet. You have 5 rounds at this time for the poison to kick in via Bjeon - what do you wish to do during this time via your conversation? The guard captain is believed to be well-connected; further, he's well armed, as are his men. You don't know their stats, but you'd believe that they won't be merely low-level guards, but are likely his personal retinue/bodyguard - something to consider with how you play this out. That said, it's your move.
Hey, guys. Due to some personal medical problems I'm going to have to take a few days off before continuing. I hope this doesn't cause any issues or problems, but I should be back soon, hopefully by next Monday. One point of note; the notes regarding Bjeorn's saves were accurate, mine were not - this means he succeeds and only suffers the initial Con Damage. However, it should be noted that accidents like that are likely due to the fact that I'm making errors and mistakes, even now. Hopefully I'll be better in a few days. I apologize again for any inconvenience.
Bjeorn - you take another
Con Damage for a total of 9 lost so far - you really need to make that check soon... You have one more round to try it - if anyone is able to offer him any further aid, that would be very helpful at this time. As you stand there, you believe you can hear voices. You are free to make a Perception Check to see if you can recognize them... Perception Check DC 18: You believe that there is one louder individual speaking to subordinates. You are not sure who they might be, but you are certain that you recognize the voice, strange as it is. It is, in fact, the very same guard officer who you have had multiple run-ins with before; your last meeting with him was right outside the temple earlier. He will be in the chamber in one round...

I mean, it depends on how far you drag the body and how well you want to hide it. You have 12 seconds and you know the distance you can drag a body based on your carrying capacity, so I'l leave those details up to you and if your companions wish to aid you.
Paten - you are free to use a Wise Council option to aid him in his further checks. However, you won't have time to do anything else given what's about to happen. Bjeorn, please take another -
to Constitution - this will proceed for 4 more rounds or until you can get 2 successful checks. As the company seems to relax a bit and consider options they hear a strange noise coming from the entrance to the tomb. It sounds like a group of voices accompanying the sound of booted feet and what appears to be a company of armed men moving down the hallway you were in a moment ago. In short, a group of men are moving down the hallway you explored, but have not yet reached the chamber you are in. This entire state of affairs seems shocking. While it is possible that someone might have heard the late Sabiha's scream, it is impossible to believe that - given the area that you are in - that anyone would have elected to investigate the sound of a woman screaming, dying or otherwise. Further, even if someone DID come to investigate, it might be a random rogue looking to pick clean the corpse of a fresh kill. It would not be a group of well-armed men marching into an all but deserted temple in a slum simply because someone screamed. Indeed, you saw no one around the area before you moved in, so where they could have come from remains a mystery. However, it is possible that - perhaps - a group of men were waiting in hiding for a signal, and hearing the scream, decided to investigate on their own. In which case, you do not know what to expect, but it seems like trouble is coming. NOTE: You formally have 2 rounds to go to save against this poison before they arrive. It should be noted that anything that can be done, should be done, as Bjeorn has already lost 5 Con. Once whoever is there gets there it will be likely that - if Bjeorn is still up and hasn't already saved - that you will not have time to Aid him with whatever is coming. Good luck!
Bjeorn - the poison you are hit with is Black Lotus Venom. To succeed against it you need a DC of 20 and need to make 2 Consecutive Saves. You lose 1d6 Con every round for 6 rounds until/unless you save successfully. Round 1 Damage to Con -
Talar; any time you want to take a Move Action to study a target to ascertain their type you are able to do like when Rangers Identify Monsters, if you'd like. Your combined total damage to this guy drops him before he can even attack. You are now free to act.
Response from Mother Jelah: Jelah smiled as she watched Tairin, yet the smile was one of a sly, predatory animal – clearly impressed with her sexuality and presence, Jelah seemed to be interested in enjoying the young delicacy before her. Even so, her own manners and professionalism overcame her lust and she leaned back and seemed to think. ”You speak of the death of this being? I tell you truly, if it were a dark god or demon than your company should have surely perished, methinks. That you lived suggests at the least to me that it was slain, or at least, brought to some dark end in which – rising again – we should be long dead from age alone.” ”Thus I think you may have destroyed it, or at least defeated it so that we should not see it again. Yet it may be there are others…” she says after a moment, as if thinking, then shrugs. ’You have asked me of the condition of the priests of Yadar within this city? I say to you that they are well-established enough, yet not overly powerful here.” ”Their faith is looked upon with a veiled set of respect, only inasmuch that they are not able to discount the value of priests of Death and how they regard such things as the corpses strewn about this city.” ”These folk are mostly silent type, yet there is a man within the city limits who is more versed in such matters, if you would speak to him, then you might learn more. His name is Darius; you may find him in a small temple to Yadar not far from here,” she adds with a wave of her hand. ”Now, as for the rest of the accord you wish to lay before me…” she adds with at throaty voice which trails off somewhat as she stares at Tairin with a thoughtful expression which suddenly blossomed in to a more intent mien of lust. ”If you wish to be my pupil, then you must first do what you will to convince me of how well you wish to serve me…” she added, then slides across to Tairin and moves before her, staring down at the young girl. Your move…]
Sorry for the delay, guys. I've been really struggling with some personal issues, so I'm going to do my best to get things on point. 1. Your combined efforts manage to drop the girl - however, as you do, as a Free Action, she lets out an extremely loud shriek. NOTE: This strikes you odd - almost as if she was calling for help; but considering this part of town would be bereft of anyone but maybe some beggars and thieves - and even THEY were avoiding this temple by all accounts, you don't know who she COULD be calling for - but it did strike you as odd... 2. Yasala hits the bodyguard with a heavy hit, he's up, but he suddenly goes into a bloody rage. At which point you realize that you might be able to drop him, but he'll still get his attacks (I had all the details for the combat map up, including the barbarian's sheet, but my computer "closed down" for a late-night system reset and all the data disappeared. I still have it, but it will take time to find it and put up his numbers and I'm near late for work; I'll have it up when I get home from work after morning shift). 3. Bjeorn - two things; one, your Fortitude Save posted at 11, and even without looking at my notes, that does fail - unless you have a bonus to poison? The other thing is, while you can use Combat Expertise, that does't formally kick-in until it is your Attack and you can Declare you're using it. In short, since she went first and there was no indication you had it on, you couldn't formally be using it. Don't worry, though - you're still up; but it's one of those things that I need to know you're using before attacking - I mean, if she hit by 1 Point over your AC and you say afterwards you were using it vs. she hit by 10 over your AC and using it won't matter, you might not bother to use it. Not saying that you would do that, but it's why the rule was built that way. In short, if you want to use Combat Expertise I need to know you've got it up before the enemy attacks, and since she beat your Initiative, it wasn't up.
Tairin of the Veils wrote: - Regarding Your Meeting with Mother Jelah - Response: Mother Jelah is certainly open the idea of Tairin electing to use her charm and seduction with her, and responds in kind, with equal enthusiasm, clearly enjoying the presence of this young beauty before her. She gives you a knowing smile when you suggest you wish the tales of your health to be hidden from the public, and does not seem to be overly concerned as to why you should wish this, indeed, she does not even question you about it. However, when talk turns to the creature, much of her sexual playfulness evaporates. Tairin; someone of Jelah's rank and station should not be bothered much by this issue. That is; her training and discipline should be so good that she should theoretically be able to ignore her personal problems so she can fully concentrate on giving her client pleasure. The fact that she is not able to do so, or having trouble doing so, suggests she is truly upset over things. "I do not wholly know the powers of such a beast; yet it is said that dark gods have walked the earth before the dawn of man, and demons as well..." she says with a grim, distracted voice. "Yet such creatures have powers beyond the lot of mere mortals. To slay such creatures with steel alone all tales claim to be false; for only weapons enchanted, blessed - or cursed - by great power can hope to overcome such a threat..." she added, as if unsure. She looks hard at you. "I fear you may not have not have slain the creature at all. For unless your weapons had the help of some benign sorcerer or some powerful god, I do not believe it was destroyed..." she adds. She doesn't know your weapons were in fact blessed; but I assume you'd tell her that after her comment. In which case, she'll admit that, if your weapons are blessed, that you have clearly defeated this thing. For all tales say that bold men armed with such weapons have been known to vanquish monstrous threats and destroy even demons, if armed with sacred weapons in general. I'm not sure if you'd tell her the nature of the weapons blessings, though (though you are certainly free to, I just don't know if you would; but you don't think it would be a problem, you may have other things you want to discuss instead). Also, I don't want to guess what other details you'd lay out at this point; but it's clear she is now very impressed with your abilities if you do indeed have such weapons at your disposal. So much so that she is now no longer looking at you like a "Cougar" might look at a young person they wish to seduce, but rather, she is looking at you with some new-found respect as if you may be more powerful. In short; the mentioning of the blessed weapons and your defeat of this creature has seriously boosted your reputation with her. However; she doesn't know the nature of the blessings or any other details at this time, but as your status is now elevated with her, you won't need to make any further Diplomacy Checks with her. You ask her questions and she's going to do her best to answer you as openly and honestly as possible; she is now considered to be Helpful to you via any Diplomacy Checks with her in the future and this condition will remain unless you do something blatantly negative to harm her. What do you wish to discuss at this time?
While the woman clearly is unsure as the nature of Paten, Yasala and Talar, she is quite clear that Bjeorn is a Barbarian, and it seems she has a particular issue with Barbarians in general... Thus, while Yasala did do more damage to her, she elects to make a Full Attack on Bjeorn... NOTE: Favorite Enemy Bonus on Bjeorn being Factored in at +4] Right Hand Attack
If it hits -
Attack Two
If it hits -
Left Hand Attack
If it hits -
Attack Two
If it hits -
The archer, crouched in the shadows, takes a shot on Yasala to disrupt her - Attack on Yasala with bow -
IF it hits -
At this, the man drops his bow, as a Free Action and uses his move action to jump with Acrobatics from his position to land near the ground and help his companion - Acrobatics Check to Jump forward from a Standing Jump for a jump of 10 feet; DC is 10 but x2 for Jumping without running start -
Second Acrobatics Check to try to negate Falling Damage and not land prone vs DC of 15 -
Edit: Bjeorn, I'm not positive what your AC is at this time; I believe you have +1 for your Dexterity, +2 for your Shield netting you a 13? I'm not positive, though, so if you could confirm that, it would be helpful as it may mean she may have missed you with the last strike... If she hit all four shots, you take 40 - 4 damage for your shield's DR for a net of 36 (I believe you have a DR of +1 for the shield?). Also, I will need a Fortitude Save at this time for the poison that her off-hand weapon did. Yasala, you did better; you only suffered a total of 11 - 3 for DR (I believe you have a DR of 3 at this time) so you only took 8 Damage. Damage Taken for Barbarian Falling Damage - subtract 1 Point for DR (possibly negating Falling Damage and being Prone -
EDIT: While he had the bonus to Jumping he did not have it use for Falling and it seems that, despite his DR, he took at least 1 Point of Damage (technically 4) and is now Prone The shots were brutal and bloody; yet now it is your turn... Lots of Coding/Notes so I'll sum up - Bjeorn: You now have 10 HP and need to make a Fortitude Save Yasala: You now have 28 HP and you have a Prone Target next to you
