I've always hated auctions.

Taras will bid up to 150GP for the spell.

He takes it handily: He only has to bid 100 gp.

Additionally, the reverse side of the page contains Summon Monster I.

Taemin Swallowtail wrote:
Taemin recalls a powerful spell from his days at the Academie, and seeks out a couple/few potions of Mage Armor.

No problem. Pick out a few at market price from the various magic shops around the city.

Dennis da Ogre wrote:

If he can't find someone to rent/ borrow a book from he will buy scrolls if needed.

Spells to add to his book:
Burning Disarm (from the Cheliax Companion)
Unseen Servant
Feather Fall

Scrolls:
Knock!

FWIW... arcane bond rocks with regards to not needing as many utility scrolls. I was going to grab knock but realized it's probably better just on his spell list and if he needs it he can tap arcane bond. It's also great for Feather Fall!

Edit: Ooops knock is second level.

Unseen servant and Feather Fall are available from the reference spellbooks in the Elvish Embassy in southshore. It takes you a couple days to make full sense of them (i.e. make you spellcraft check to copy), but you safely add them to your spellbook.

A scroll of knock is likewise easy to procure from the Acadamae at market price, of course.

Burning disarm, on the other hand, proves a bit more difficult to procure. Despite Korvosa's ties with Cheliax, the spell is far from common in arcane circles in the city. Taras would like to pick up some scrolls and possibly try and get some new spells if he can find someone to share spellbooks.

Cool. What's his shopping list?

Last chance for folks to shop/sell/take time off before I spur the next stage of the adventure.

Actions, folks?

At this point, I'm going to write The Last Rogue off for lost. Haedrik will take his share of the cash and go home. Since we still have a viable party left over, I don't see the need to recruit another player.

Hands over the bow and arrows, including the bloody arrow that was used to torture the guard.

For the record, the bloody arrow is the 20th arrow from the quiver and is no longer magical.

Taras wrote:

So to sum things up we have

Potion of cure moderate
(mwk?) Longbow and (magic?) arrows/ quiver (Taras is going to clarify exactly which bits are magic here)
three small burlap bags. The first two contain reasonable sums of gold and silver, respectively. The third, smaller, bag contains a double handful of various gemstones. Ross can we get a total on this stuff? Appraise checks on gems below
100 Platinum pieces
A silver dagger (Taemin is carrying it)

Can we divide this up pretty quick and get moving? Taras wants to chase down some scrolls and maybe a wand.

Anyone want the Arrows?

Ross: We tell the Marshall about the murders also and our suspicions that Vankerskin was not involved in the murders.

Appraise Check
Bow, gemstones, Dagger in that order (1d20+4=5, 1d20+4=22, 1d20+4=6)

The burlap bags yield 150 gold pieces and twice that many silver pieces. The third contains a haphazard assortment of small gems and jewelry worth a total of 200 gp.

(I'm going to assume that you use identify here:)
The bow is masterwork, and the quiver contains 19 +1 arrows. The dagger radiates a weak evocation aura, but you cannot discern any actual magic properties.

When you return to the Citadel, the Field Marshal is happy to provide your reward: 100 freshly minted platium crowns. She thanks you for your service. She thanks you for returning (most of) her men alive.

This is your opportunity to take a day or two to take care of any business you have in the city, sell/buy gear, that sort of thing.

You manage to find a few short lengths of rope among the animal pens. Probably used to tie or lead animals. It's smelly and worn, but it'll get the job done. Where do you take the prisoners?

Taras wrote:
Taras will carefully search teh room, then check the contents of the hay cart.

You find only stale hay.

I've updated the map here. I don't think anyone has encountered any surprises in their movement.

The door opens into a storage shack containing nothing but a disused hay cart.

Taemin finds an iron snuffer large enough to extinguish the heavy lamp. (The lamp itself is bolted to the floor and uses a thick rope for a wick in order to produce enough heat to keep the vat boiling.)

The map is updated.

The boiling vat is heated by a oil-burning lamp. You find no additional human remains in this area.

Verronax Therellion wrote:

"I've found their ill-gotten gains," Verronax tells Taras. "Shall we go to the next door?"

Verronax carefully pushes open the western doors with his halberd.

The western door opens into the outdoor livestock pen you saw earlier, while casing the location.

Verronax Therellion wrote:

Verronax will do a quick search of the pigpens, then listen at the double doors to the west.

Perception (search) 1d20+4=24, Perception (Listen) 1d20+4=9

A search of the southern pen finds a small hole dug under the water trough, and covered over with loose earth. Inside, you find three small burlap bags. The first two contain reasonable sums of gold and silver, respectively. The third, smaller, bag contains a double handful of various gemstones.

You steer clear of the northern pen for now, as the boars within get fairly aggressive if you approach.

You hear nothing particularly special at the side door.

Updated map is located here.

Hopefully that will help people see where the doors lead, and thus what they want to do.

Ross, I have the adventure if you need someone to take over for this building.

Ogre's already running a PbP, so you're free to take over for the rest of the building if you like.

P.S. Greetings from Omaha!

I'm going to have limited time and/or internet access for a couple weeks. However, in the interest of keeping the game moving, I'm willing to let someone DM exploring the rest of the building. Is anyone interested?

Taras wrote:
Ross, are there any rooms in this place left to search?

Yes. Most of the back area is unexplored.

It takes some additional prodding, but eventually the sobbing Karralo outlines the guards' 'scheme'. In addition to working for Vancaskerkin, they moonlit as thugs for hire. When they accidentally beat one of their targets to death, Parns decided they'd use the butcher shop operation to dispose of the body.

Taras wrote:
"You did all this without Vankerskin knowing? Why?"

"Parns...he said we'd make it rich."

Taras wrote:
I forget, Parns is which one? The one Karista killed or the one she just knocked out?

The dead one. I don't think you know the names of the other two.

Non-lethal crit. He's now unconcious on his side, moaning into his filthy gag.

Verronax Therellion wrote:
"Do you not know what your own men have been doing?" Verronax asks Vancaskerkin, doing his best to ignore Karista and her interrogation 'techniques'. "Remember Abadar still sees the truth."

"Not this."

Vancaskerkin is still under the effects of Abadar's truthtelling and thus cannot lie, though he can still try to mislead while avoiding direct lies. Your and Taemin's Sense Motive checks likewise confirm he isn't trying to be misleading, either.

Taemin Swallowtail wrote:
"Who paid you to do this?"

"Parns...set it up. Dunno." He seems to be calming down somewhat.

Taras wrote:
"Karralo, who were you supposed to rough up?"

"I...I dunno. Some guys. We were paid."

The other guard speaks up again. "G@!#~&n it, Karralo. Shut up!"

"They...they weren't supposed to die. Just...Just rough 'em up, Parns said. But they died anyway, and...an..we..." Karralo collapses back into sobbing.

Vancaskerkin looks incensed, now. "What they hell have you four been up to?"

Taemin Swallowtail wrote:

Taemin continues to hold his shoulder, and nearly whispers, "Who were they?"

Karralo begins to speak "We...we...", but is cut off again by the other guard.

"Shut your yap. If you say another g*&&&@n word you won't have to worry about these jokers. I'll kill you myself."

Vancaskerkin just looks confused.

Karista Tamiir-Quah wrote:

Karista is able to find a shop rag near the front counter.

Taemin Swallowtail wrote:
"Come Karralo, speak and be absolved. Do not let the forces of chaos consume you."

"We...we...we killed them. Gods forgive me."

The man continues to sob violently.

"Stop bawling like a little girl, Karralo." says another guard (the one Taemin and Karista brought down from upstairs. "I knew we shouldn't have brought him on."

Taras wrote:
I'm assuming Vankerskin isn't lying. Did it look anything like a goat?

You are certain it was not a goat.

Taras wrote:
"Vankerskin, perhaps an easy question for you. There is an unusual cut of meat in the back of your meat storage room. I do not recognize the cut. What sort of animal is that from?"

Vancaskerkin looks confused. "It was arranged for cattles and pigs. I think we got a goat yesterday, too. I don't know what else it could be."

Another guard, a pale, skinny fellow who had charged in alongside the fellow Karista just killed, vomits and begins to cry.

Verronax Therellion wrote:

Verronax continues prodding Vancaskerkin. "And do you know why she wanted you to set up shop? The real reason?"

If he answers yes:
"And what is this reason?"

Vancaskerkin and the surviving guards look like they are fighting off the urge to retch after Karista murders their erstwhile comrade.

Vancaskerkin stutters. "I-I don't know."

DM Ross wrote:
Taras, are you still detecting magic?
To be honest I wasn't really thinking much about that so probably not. On the other hand, I don't see why he would have dismissed the effect. *shrug* hard to answer that without being a little meta about it.

I'll be generous, then. Karista's new quiver and the arrow she's threatening the bloke with detect as weak magic.

Karista Tamiir-Quah wrote:

Taras, are you still detecting magic?

Verronax Therellion wrote:
"What exactly was Vimanda's idea, or plan, here? What were you doing for her?"

"She said I should take over the shop here. Become sort of a hero to the people."

One of the other prisoners (the one who had carried a hammer) snickers just slightly. Vancaskerkin doesn't appear to hear.

Karista Tamiir-Quah wrote:
"What do you mean, *was* your lover?"

"I haven't heard from her in days."

Verronax Therellion wrote:
"Who is Vimanda? What was her idea?"

"She's a con..frie..argh. She was my lover." He begins to look almost wistful, though it is hard to look wistful with an omnious, ethereal key hanging over your head. "When the King died, she said the unrest was going to hurt a lot of people, especially those who didn't have much to begin with. It...seemed like a good idea at the time."

Karista Tamiir-Quah wrote:
"Why can't I just shove an arrowhead into his eye, I am sure he will talk fast enough then, this mystic powers never works fast enough."

A nice Intimidate check from Karista ensures that Vancaskerkin can't plead the fifth and avoid answering.

Taemin Swallowtail wrote:
"What profit does House Arkona see in chaos?"

"What? I don't know."

Verronax Therellion wrote:
can I get any more with a nobility check?

Not too much more, with that roll. But you don't know of any Vimanda in House Arkona. Of course, you might have simply not have heard of her, or maybe the name is for house staff, rather than the family proper. House Arkona also has a bad habit of bringing distant cousins or illegitimate children back from Vudra to join the house, so its also possible Vimanda is a recent arrival. (The fact that the name is Vudran might support this, since the proper descendants of the house have Chelish names.)

Verronax Therellion wrote:
Ross, if he makes his save (DC 15), would the key disappear so I would know it wasn't working?

A will save negates the spell, and since it has a single target, that would mean the secondary effects would go away as well (unlike Zone of Truth, where the Zone remains even if an individual makes their save.) Which really makes Truthtelling a rather better spell than the Zone, now that I think of it.

Fortunately for you, the ghostly key remains.

Vancaskerkin visibly struggles with the enchantment. "I don't serve...argh. It was Vimanda's idea, but I work for myself!"

Alright. Verronax, your spell in prepared. Let the interrogation begin!

It sounds like, unless Taras has pending business, it's time to put the screws to Vancaskerkin.

Also, I see Karista took the bow and the arrows, but who pocketed the silver dagger? Taemin or Karista? Or was it left?

Verronax Therellion wrote:
Has Verronax prepared his spell yet? About how much time has passed?

It's been a couple minutes, at most. It takes 10 minutes for him to prep, I think? I'm giving the other folks some time to check around.

Taemin Swallowtail wrote:

"It appears to be a love letter and request for instructions to someone named Vimanda. Probably from Vancaskerkin I suppose." Taemin thinks a moment before passing over the note, "House Arkona... the others will likely want to see that."

Taemin pauses at each window to gaze outside, pondering bits of half remembered history.

Knowledge (History) check on House Arkona 1d20+5 -> [8,5] = (13)
Perception check out windows: 1d20+9 -> [4,9] = (13)

House Arkona is one of the major noble houses in Korvosa. Their primary source of income is a near monopoly on Vudran imports.

You're off initiative, so there is no 'up.'

As far as the heal check, I already rolled the appropraite check. Taras didn't make it.
