It appears this Emperor is not so anxious to meet us.
As Zadim tustles with the Emperor's thugs, Varian takes advantage of the confusion and rushes the stairs. He's greeted by a poisonous miasma. Varian wraps his shield cloak around his face and persists.
As he's about to reach the balcony, Varian discovers the source of the foul miasma. A pet demonling regarding the wizard as less than a threat. Varian quickly peruses his scrolls, and pulls a smokey one out. The demonling begins to approach, not wishing to prolong the kill. Varian quickly scans the cursed document, then drops the ground with chalk in hand sketching a small but precise glyph, then shuffles backward.
The demonling registers surprise as it loses the ability to move of its own volition and in fact finds itself being drawn to the glyph. As its form touches the glyph, it's material form dissapates into nothing...or at least nothing that can be detected on this plane.
Staring at this display from his perch on the balcony is none other than Pilts Swastel, who strikes a more pathetic figure this close up. His royal costume, threadbare. And his face marked by the blood veil. Seeing Varian's power, a flash of fear flits across his face. He gathers himself and a calm almost hypnotic voice leaves his lips, "You have proven yourself! And I am pleased to welcome you to this court."
For a moment, Varian is almost taken in, but he knows a thing or two about royalty. Vagrant or not, they cannot be trusted! Varian approaches as if to offer himself to this supposed king, lulling the man into a false sense of superiority. As he get's close, Varian lunges grabbing a hold of Pilts tight...draining the life away from him.
Pilts shrieks pulling away with all his might. While the blood fades from his face, he manages to take a drink of a handy elixir and is able to slide his hand free with quickness and grace. Having escaped Varian's death grip, he flips supernaturally off of the balcony landing in the streets below. Quickly he's lost in the crowd.
Varian grits his teeth, and casts yet another spell...this time a wave of nausea hits him. But he is now floating a foot above ground. Varian takes to the skies, looking this way and that. He thought he saw Pilts' figure alone in the plaza, but it was just some ragged priest. He then flies to a den of iniquity and sure enough spots the emporer slipping in.
Zova and Zadim run out of the Emporer's "throne room," finding Radovan with a smug expression. "He's all yours, Zadim. Make it count."

Varian attempts to recover all cards in his Recovery pile. Harrow Bound Imp : Arcane 8:1d12 + 4 + 1d4 ⇒ (5) + 4 + (3) = 12 -> Bound Imp recharged.
Varian resets his hand.
Squealing Pig in hand, Varian spies the Shinglesnipes (the opposing team), taking position around his pit in order to block the point. Varian takes note of their numbers...many...and their formation...sloppy. Too Many. None are guarding their pit.
"Radovan, get ready to block their pig pit. It's time to finish this game!"
At that, Varian makes a show of running toward the pit, pig squealing all of the way. Plotting the probable trajectory of the other team's toughs, he launches himself to the side at just the right time. In response the Shinglesnipe thugs slam into each other. Varian dances backwards holding the pig at arms length in front of him, taunting his opponanents. They trip over themselves in a clumsy attempt to snatch the pig. Varian jigs to the right hopping on top of an over turned cart, then, flips over a the last defender, then neatly deposits the pig in it's pit with its two brethern.
The crowd roars in approval. And throws a scroll at his feet. Grateful, he snatches up the scroll. And boasts, "Is that all you've got? Throw me something more substantial and I'll give you a show!"
A grave fellow with a slight curl in his lips throws Varian a workable shield. "That will have to do!" Varian turns to see the mass of Shinglesnipes scattered with some attempting to reinforce their goal...in vain, as Radovan has set a number of obstacles in their path. Someone tries to though a vial Varian's way but it breaks agaisnt his cloak harmlessly.
Varian cracks his knuckles readying spell and his wand, approaching the opposing team's pit. Lightning, and Frost crackling through his fingers, force growing within the wand. Normally these things require finesse to aim, bu Varian's target is clear.
In an instant power magic force launch at the crudely dug pit destroying any semblance of it's previous form. It no longer can hold much of anything, let alone scared pigs.
Radovan looks up addressing the Emporer, "I guess that means we win."
The emporer lurches to his feet and bellows, “Two out of three!” only to be told by a nervous thug that they’ve run out of pigs. For a moment, the emperor seems ready to strap the thug into the Tall Knife. An instant later he regains his composure, "A curious win, to be sure. Congratulations." The crowd erupts in support!
The emporer proclaims this new team the winners with the accompanying invitation to his balcony.
Concerned that there is something else at play, Varian fades back into the Tenements.

After safely depositing one of the requisite pig in the pit, Varian finds his opponants charging madly to at him. I guess they would prefer not score points in this "game." Well...to hell with them!
Instead of doding out of the way, Varian lets loose powerful vampiric energies that have gotten sharper in this corrupted city. One of his rough opponants falls in the mud while the others flee to safety. None of them are mad enough to face this kind of power. Even Radovan has kept to the periphery.
Feeling his power, with only a little bit of nausea, Varian flies into the nearby tenements where Zadim has cornered one more of the noisy swine. Varian is able to snatch the pig and gets ready to return it for yet another point.

Varian looks like a great choice for me. Do you have any suggestion of another deck to use with him besides Ultimate Magic? It's filled with good cards but I'm starting to feel a bit repetitive with it - so many of my characters end up taking it. And the Adventurer's Packs are fun but ultimately often feel a little too thin.
I'm running Varian with Arcane and Occult Adventure Packs plus Hell's Vengeance 2. It's giving me some good options all around.

With one muddy swine in hand, Varian is tempted to take it directly to the goal. "Where's the fun in that?" teases Radovan as he rushes to a very occupied tenement building to run defense against the opposing team.
Varian lags behind and by the time he's caught up, Radovan's convinced one the other team's defense to join Varian's team. They take a beat to survey the building and find large parts of it destroyed.
Radovan points out another opponant that may be convinced to join as well. Dressed in gladiatorial armor, she appears to be capable and strong. Unfortunately, she seems to be running around confused causing much of the destruction in the tenement. Varian decides to pass.
Just as they are about to make the long hustly back to the goal, Varian's pet imp finally pulls itself out of its sub-dimension. Varian sends the Imp with the squealing pig to drop it into the goal.

The action shifts back to Zadim's corner as the opposing team makes a play at getting capturing the pig. Radovan breaks off, deftly running through the other team's defenses, leaving Varian to hunt for the pig undisturbed. With everyone on Radovan's heels, they're plan to ambush Zadim falls apart.
Meanwhile, Varian straps on some deft footwear for the occasion and flips through Zellara's deck to try to divine the location of the porcine prize. And sure enough he's lead right to pig's hiding place. Varian steels himseld then makes as grab for it. Then the squealing starts!

Vencarlo's office is getting engulfed in flames and smoke. And there are discomfiting screams and beastial noise adding to the chaos and confusion. Protected for the time being by Radovan, Hakon, and Zova, Varian pauses to open up his third eye as Zellara has been trying in vain to teach him from beyond the grave.
Out of body, Varian subconcious darts from one thing to the next like an anxious hummingbird, flitting this way to see a horned beast blocking the back exit out of the burning building; then to a nearby well that's been tampered with, nothing but mud from its depths thwarting any outside help that might come; then finally alighting on the location of a Red Mantis Assassin on their way out of the doomed office.
Varian snaps out of his magic-induced stuper. Stands up too quickly, inducing a sick hiccup, and a brief pause to recover. He rushes directly to where he knows the Red Mantis to be slowing the assassin down with an enervating energy flowing from Varian's shaking fingers.
The assassin stumbles attempting to lob a projectile at Varian's face but it bounces harmlessly aside. Now Varian reshapes the magic to pull not just the life force but the intellect away from the Red Mantis assailant.
Satisfied that he's no longer a threat, he shouts for the others to leave and closes this part of the structure down so it's destruction won't impact the rest of the building as much.

Not having the brute willpower of Hakon, Varian succombs to the screeching pain of the undead creature. He takes on a terrifically unbecoming scream himself. He riffles through his scrolls furiously and realizes that he has the perfect Word at the ready, and his ragged cry becomes a soothing word, "Safe", but he knows in his heart it's a lie.
Varian briefly considers assisting Zova with the assassins in the store room, but considers himself ill equipped. Instead he takes flight to get a better vantage point of where other fires are and what else can be saved. He'll say this for Vencarlo, whether he's indeed Blackjack, he's keeping some strange creatures in the academy. Varian sets down in the academy's office and attempts to take magical possession of a homunculus, but he only manages to free the thing.

Using the storehouse as a staging area, Varian's companions look for fire fighting supplies. Varian rifles through his books and scrolls for something useful, handing Zellara's Harrow Deck to Radovan in the process. Radovan flips through the cards, "Master Orisini has a small but well stocked Library, ya know"
Varian stops in his tracks having just conjured a Bound Imp. "We must save the knowledge that we can from this conflagration!" he states turning to find Radovan already gone.
Varian makes haste to the library to find an empty cage and Radovan with a self satisfied look. Radovan approaches with a scroll. "Zell says you'd want a look at this one." Sure enough the parchment unlocks the secrets of Clairvoyance.
Radovan also finds a hidden compartment within a shrine to Gozreh and discovers a set of black masks. Both Radovan and Varian put the masks over their face to protect against the smoke. Varian reflects dryly: "There's more to Vencarlo than he is letting on"
Muttering the words laid out by the Clairvoyance scroll, Varian gets a glimpse of some of the remaining magic in the place. But also catches site of a hidden Red Mantis Assassin.
Having recently studied the tactics of the Red Mantis, Varian decides to use a more precise magic and a readies a length of Shadow Barbs in preparation.
When the assassin finally makes their move, Varian flings the barb around the assailant, trapping them in a snarl of shadowy magic.
Varian regretfully leaves the library, using his cloak to protect himself from the flames. A mournful wail comes from another part of the school. Radovan quickly plugs Varian's sensitive ears with wax earplugs to protect him from the effects of the destructive sound.

End of turn, Withering buries Magic Eye
As Varian, Zova, and Hakon rush to Zadim's aid,they enter a room who's main feature is the walls covered with a thick glass that holds, pressed to the walls, fragments and even whole bodies of the living dead. Their rotting faces sneer and broken fingers claw at each other as the shattered forms twitch in vain, their splintered appendages grasping hopelessly.
Zova points to a crack expanding in pane of glass. The party takes what cover they can as the glass explodes outward, shards cutting some and deflecting off of leather and metal on others. Out of the broken glass, a broken but preserved former patient wrapped in bandages emerges ready to exact vengeance.
Varian hops out of the party's huddle, slinging a special bit of shadow magic from his hand, collecting the glass shards in a multi-tailed whip, challenging the unfortunate undead creature to advance. It obliges, and Varian lashes out, Shadow Barbs ensnaring it in a deadly embrace. Damaged and limping it continues to advance on Varian, until an exotic blade appears at the base of its skull, causing it to collapse in a pile.
A charred and worn, Zadim emerges from the chamber's doorway, having just expertly thrown the blade.
"We know where to find the high priestess! Let us dispatch with the rest of this temple's guardians here before inviting ourselves into her sanctum."

Having somehow escaped unharmed from the patient-turned-ghast, Varian's returns to the operating room with well worn sigil of a star and sword. The cultist prostrates themselves to Varian holding out the symbol of Iomedae's Justice towards Varian.
"You will be wanting this," they advise with a gravel-filled voice. They nod towards the cells.
Grasping the symbol, Varian pull painfully at his forehead until a third eye emerges. He glimpses an ill-fated past and future for everyone trapped within, including disturbing amalgamation of angel, demon, and horse, a Leukodaemon. The fiend is staring intently at a crack in the containment chamber holding it. Varian witnesses a near future of the monster violently breaking out. Quickly, Varian snaps out of it and moves behind an operating table.
Just then, a loud crash erupts from the cells along with a sickening roar. A cloud of corpse-bloated black flies swarms into the operating room. Varian holds it at bay with the holy symbol and the cover provided underneath the table.
As that nightmare passes, the horse-skulled warped humanoid emerges from the cells crunching it's deadly jaws around the remains of the ghast, then quickly turns its attention and claws toward Varian. The count responds by weaving life draining magic through the symbol of Iomedae's divinity, leaping out in a beam of light, the color of roses or blood, that pins the leukodaemon to the wall of the room, replete with wicked medical-torture tools. As the life force starts to leave the daemon of sickness, Radovan ducks into Cells and emerges with one bawling city archer who somehow managed to remain unscathed...physically. Radovan quickly locks the cells so that nothing else nasty can leave.
"If you are finished..." Radovan beckons Varian to leave. Satisfied that the life force of the leukodaemon is suitably extinguished, Varian follow Radovan out but loses track of him in the twisting tunnels of the temple, eventually finding himself quite alone in the inner sanctum, with the remains of a dead Chimera.

Varian attempts to recover all cards in his Recovery pile. Hour is Harrow Zellara's Harrow Deck: Perception 12:1d6 + 1 + 1d4 ⇒ (1) + 1 + (4) = 6 -> Zellara's Harrow Deck discarded. Before reset recharge Soothing Word Varian resets his hand.
Eight unpleasant-looking beds stand here. Their sharp iron frames are threaded with worn manacles and stained leather straps. Several are occupied by obviously unwilling patients; all are bound and in various states of consciousness, and their combined moans murmur throughout the room. Between them stand several small tables strewn with gore-soaked pans, flasks of mysterious fluids, and all manner of cruel-looking cutting instruments. A sizable brown-crimson stain covers much of the eastern wall, as if all the blood from a body once held there had exploded forth in a single violent eruption.
It's difficult to believe, but the patients here are even worse off than those found above. A couple of Varian's servants are waiting for he and Radovan as they arrive at the Operating Room. Varian thinks he recognize a Karvosan Dandy that he once met at a party, but the poor soul is too far gone to even contemplate rescuing. As fate would have it, the dandy's jerkin is neatly packed nearby. Surely their next of kin would have use for it.
There's plenty to investigate here but none of it is to Varian's liking. His pet cultist often stirs the right kind of trouble. As Varian prepares himself, the cultist breaks the lock to the corridor of patient cells. With that, a former patient turned Ghast lunges into the Operating Room. Varian holds a cloth to his face to guard against the stench while Radovan taunts and dodges the foul creature. Having gotten his bearings, Varian pulls out one his newly found scrolls. Upon chanting the sickening words, ghostly tentacles fly out from Varian's personage and wrap around the ghast constricting and crushing it until the undeath is squeezed completely out of it.
"That's new," Radovan smirks riley.
"Indeed. Now let us see if there is anyone worth saving," Varian replies preparing to go in the patient cells.

While Varian peruses the labs texts with casual interest, Radovan bends down to examine an operating table-torture device. Radovan wrinkles his nose in disgust. "It's been used...a lot...and recently"
"Then we won't stay long," Varian replies crisply while affixing a third eye to his forehead.
"Ready yourself! 'The help' is coming," Varian whispers. He then hides behind a bookshelf and prepares a deadly spell.
Bedecked in grey tattered tunic and cape and carrying a tray of fresh implements, the hapless Cultist of Urgathoa enters the chamber. In a moment, the tray and it's contents crashes to the ground as Varian drains the life from the cultist.
"Our quarry lies elsewhere," Varian states matter-of-factly, while gathering a handful of scrolls.
Radovan leads the way, "Let's find the victims and get them the hells out of here."

Knowing that security measures were about to increase, the party spreads out to different parts of the Temple of Urgothoa. Varian ducks into a fascinating laboratory.
"An elegant operating table dominates the center of this grim laboratory. Crossed with iron restraints and encircled by a gore-encrusted gutter, the macabre device sports various cranks and levers, and is large enough to accommodate an ogre. Along the walls stand several tables strewn with all manner of alchemical accouterments. Their contents appear extremely old: rusted iron tools, beakers of purpled glass, and deep pools of wax from countless melted candles."

Fearful that the commotion caused by Zova's bestial wrath against Rolth Lamm may have caused a commotion, Varian quickly...and a casually makes his way to the Sick Ward. Fortunately, the incessant groaning, wheezing, and coughing of those consumed with blood veil echoes through the chamber blunting the impact of their passing.
Varian's third eye erupts from his forehead to look for any and all physicians it can find. They are growing suspicious. It will not be long before they notice key members of their cult missing.
Seeing Varian deep in concentration, Radovan strategizes. "The stealth, misdirection, and craftiness required to keep the physicians at bay seems much more in Zadim's bailiwick."
"There are things, I'm more...suited for. And Norgorber has yet to call me a friend," Varian admits while pocketing a narcotic concoction amongst the vials of "treatments."

Miraculously, even with the commotion in the storeroom, Varian's companions have managed to keep a low profile. It helps that there are often wails and loud complaints from the sick and dying in the wretched place. Before leaving the store room, Varian collects some fresh physician's robes and masks for the group. It's clear from Doctor Davaulus's reaction, our guard uniforms will not get us much further.
Uncomfortably attired, Varian leads the others, save Zova, down below, where there are fewer patients and more physicians. By the luck of Desna, the find themselves in the middle of an experimentation ward.
Quote:
Rows of white-sheeted beds line the walls of this room. Each bed holds a patient restrained by leather straps that bind the figure to the sturdy metal frame. At the room’s center stretch simple wooden worktables, each covered in fluid-filled beakers, intricate glass tubes, small burners, and other alchemical instruments.
Varian hides his disgust behind the physician's mask and begins to gather evidence of these madmen are attempting. Notes and scribblings are abundant as the results of vicious experimentation are laid bare. With some cursory readings, it becomes clear that the "patients" here were never sick and are in fact resistant to the disease. The work in this chamber is to find out why.
One poor soul has tubes and fluids connecting their comatose body with that of a cage Dire Badger (which Varian nearly mistook for a hairy manticore). Varian feels the bile creep up his throat, and not from practicing magic this time. He and the others take care not to disturb this scene...yet.

With Zova's sortie into the hospice and resulting disguise, Varian makes a hasty plan. Radovan will don the doctor's garb and lead this noble, and his attaché into the doctor's offices. He has urgent business of course!
Once inside, Varian quickly enchants an assistant who starts asking a lot of questions. Quickly, they become extraordinarily helpful wanting to show how valuable they can be to someone of Varian's rank and stature.
In no time, the Dandy assistant convinces a Gray Maiden Sergeant-at-arms to allow Varian's group access to doctor's offices.
Once inside there are a great deal of experimental concoctions, blades, scalpels. Ever Varian's protector, Radovan collects and stows the most dangerous of the implements.
Meanwhile searches bags for Helpful evidence, but does not find what he needs just yet.

Though Zova and Hakon have lost track of the well-armed zombie, the spirit of Zellara follows the rotting thug to its vampiric master. The not-so abandoned shacks are now full of Jolistina undead thralls.
Believing them to be coming from the nearby Graveyard, Varian investigates. Perhaps the tide may be stemmed.
Sure enough, a particularly diseased zombie lurches from the graveyard on its way to the shacks. The Grave Tender rushes to pull it behind the cemetery gates. Varian charges many bolts of electricity through with the help of his "trusty" cultist. The cultist's chance may have been overloud, as more zombie emerge from their graves.

Hesitant to follow the walking dead into the Graveyard, Varian opts to "investigate" the Den of Iniquity. Perhaps Jolistina Susperio opted for a more comfortable hide out.
Instead he is enchanted by an incredibly graceful dancer. He is just barely able to keep up with her but manages to impress. Unfortunately, Varian discovers that she is a follower of Urgathoa. They seem to be popping up everywhere these days! Varian just does touch of blood magic to weaken the Urgathoan Mercenary and get away. Cannot dwell anywhere too long!

Varian stares at the strange metallic sigils until he's cross-eyed. He finally determines that he doesn't have the right spell at his fingertips to crack open this puzzle.
He opens Zellara's Deck, her ghostly fingers pulled The Joke, The Foreign Trader, and The Midwife. Through ghostly whispers indicate that should Varian avoid the wandering dead near Giotorri's Toy Shop, a workshop spell to heat metal can be used to melt the sigils.
Varian and his trusty Grave Tender infiltrated the shop and using a bit of siphoning magic from Hakon, easily captured the spell. Just as another filthy zombie made their position, Varian fled into random streets until by fate or fortune, he found himself back at the sigil.
Letting the magic loose against sigil, the metallic glyphs melted harmlessly in front of him, emitting a foul order that stokes his already tender constitution. He runs outside of the shack that housed sigil, finding a place to discretely vomit.

After a messy fauna-filled fight in Racker's Alley, Varian is relieved to follow the lead at Carowyn Manor.
Varian, Zova, and Hakon arrive outside of the manor grounds to find a waiting Zadim. "No one has come in or out since I got here. I caught the sound of distant laughter," Zadim reports, "Oh, and the Grey Maidens have put some kind of ward around the place. I can't make out what it's meant to do. Quite perplexing"
Zova and Varian find the wards and quickly come to the conclusion that the Maidens have created a rudimentary lightning touch fence. Using a practiced incantation, Varian pulls the lightning away from the perimeter and stores it in an empty rod.
Knowing there are likely many corpses that need to be dealt with, Varian sends for his Grave Tender companion. He motions toward the manor, addressing the group, "Shall we?". With a heap of trepidation, the party enters the great hall of the manor...while Radovan opts to watch the streets outside...bravely.
A massacre took place here. Upon the marble floor and heaped in the corners lie more than a dozen corpses, each clad in garish outfits of sequined velvet, revealing silk, and colorful feathers. Masks of all shapes and sizes—each competing with the last in terms of elaborateness—adorn the dead. In several cases, though, these fanciful adornments have fallen away, revealing withered flesh covered in the telltale blisters of blood veil. Most horrifyingly, upon a bloodslick space cleared at the room’s center sway three couples, jerking like hellish dancers, all obviously dead.
Whoever orchestrated this grim scene isn't making themselves known. Nearly vomiting to do so, Varian chants a few magic words and opens a third magic eye to scan the hall. The shape of an elf appears to him behind an oddly stacked monument of corpses.
Varian readies his rod, pointing it at the corpses. The Grave Tender and Zadim approach the monument slowly while Hakon and Zova cover the exits. A lick of sunlight reflects off of Zadim's rapier, the Grave Tender clears his throat nervously, and a light crackle of electricity emanates from Varian's rod. The Tender pulls on his gloves and begins to pull a servant's body from the corpse monument...
Just then, one the pairs of dancing dead nobles pushes turns and launches themselves at Zadim. Varians lets out a branch of lightning dropping a zombie gentlemen to the ground with a monocle flying. Meanwhile Zadim makes quick bladework of zombie with an elaborate bloody dress.
Attempting to take advantage of the commotion, an elven woman dressed in crimson and gold motley flings a dagger at the Grave Tender. Reacting quickly, Varian throws magical force to block dagger. "Get Clear!" Grabbing hold of the dagger with his magic, Varian flings the dagger back a the elf. She dives out of the way, laughing heartily.
Before anyone can react, she drops a potion down her throat and vanishes. "This place is dead anyway!" she teases.
Varian collapses to the ground heaving after having so much magic flow throw him.
Try as they might, the rest of the party cannot find the elf within manor. And unfortunately, a number of the noble zombies have escaped into the city.
Hakon helps Varian to his feet and they stumble out into the streets to hunt for more zombies.
Off turn, recharge Lightning Touch Check to see if Zova was able to close, cards in deck: 6:1d8 ⇒ 7No retcon needed!

As Spider brings the fishing boat back in, Varian notices how crowded the dockside is given the imminent threat of hag attack. Some of Varian's retinue is waiting to help pull him from the boat. "There's a sea hag hiding in these docks! Everyone is in danger. Quickly! Get them away!"
Varian pauses briefly to shoo away an overly curious Crow. Just then, Radovan shouts a warning to Varian, launching a smoking contraption in Varian's direction.
Varian turns in time to see wicked trident flying towards the party. Before it can reach the party, Radovan's bomb blows it out of the sky and back into the sea.
