I have these same questions. No answers anywhere to be found?

Actually, even confused me can correct you on that one:

Quote:
each polymorph spell can grant you a number of other benefits

"Can" is not the same as "does"

That still doesn't help me to understand what is missing that is necessary per the polymorph rules. I've read through the spell descriptions and general polymorph rules and don't get what is required to be legal.

Just reiterating again and again that they are missing some stats doesn't help me to understand why those stats are necessary.

1) Look at the stats for a companion Roc, and a standard Roc, and you will see companion stats are different, and not viable enough info for the Shape spells.

1) I don't understand what stats are missing that are important for the shape spells.

I haven't seen that many threads on this issue, only the few that you have chimed in on, Thefurmonger.

You guys bring up several interesting points that have brought up further questions:

1) Why exactly are the plant companions not qualified for the Plant Shape spell? I don't understand what stats are missing that would be required by the Plant Shape spell. Plant Shape says "you can assume the form of any Small or Medium creature of the plant type" and the plant companions listed under Treesinger are described as "a creature of the plant type".

2) There are a number of plants that can fly that are listed in the bestiary database. Is this not a valid place to look for options available to Plant Shape? What indicators should I be looking for to identify the legal options from others?

3) What does Plant Shape have to do with Beast Shape? I don't see anything stating a connection between the two or a reference from one to the other.

4) It is pretty clear that the Fly skill does not grant the ability to fly, only that one is skilled at flying. It also seems well "understood" that one cannot fly without a fly speed. But I still don't understand where that consensus comes from. Is it not possible to receive the ability to fly without also having a fly speed? Is this impossibility something that is implied simply because there isn't any known instance where something grants the ability to fly but doesn't also give a fly speed?

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

My gaming group and I have a bit of a debate - really just me against all of them... Is it possible to fly without a listed fly speed? I have been unable to find anything that explicitly states that flight is impossible without a fly speed, only that one needs the ability to fly. I liken this to the ability to climb or swim without explicit climb or swim speeds. (The nice thing about climb and swim is they tell you how fast you can do so if you don't have a stated climb/swim speed.)

I have a treesinger that want's to change into a floating puffball. The puffball normally can fly, but since the Plant Shape ability doesn't grant the fly movement ability any form the treesinger takes is completely grounded. However, to me it seems that the treesinger should still retain the ability to fly, but would need to make fly skill checks for any flying movement and fly speed would be limited to his base movement speed.
