Smiley looks up from the shelves of books as Dzae and Deidre speak, and an upset look flows across his face as he strides over to Dzae and speaks with passion in his voice. "It ain't right that a little kid should have to deal with that. And it ain't right that people should judge you not on who you are and what you do, but instead they only care where you came from. Me and the Professor talked about this a lot, and I'm going to do my damndest to make sure that stuff doesn't happen to any more little kids!" He suddenly looks abashed and gulps down his drink as he sits down and mutters to himself. "Though to be honest, I was kinda counting on the Professor to tell me how to do that."

Smiley shyly clears his throat before beginning to speak, quickly, and as if he's embarrassed to be the center of attention even briefly. "I did not know the Professor for very long, and I did not understand everything he tried to tell me, but he really opened my eyes to how lucky I've been, and how unlucky others have been. I may not be smart, but the Professor told me anyone can make a positive change in the world if they put their mind to it. In his memory, I'm going to try to make that change happen." Smiley is then quiet, staring at the Professor's coffin with a wistful smile.

Smiley watches the farmers leave the graveyard with an ugly expression on his face. It is obvious to those watching that he is restraining himself from chasing after them. Abruptly he seems to shudder, and a more normal expression flows across his face. He seems to notice for the first time that he's holding his axe, and turns red with embarrassment. Somewhat sheepishly, he hangs the axe back at his side and shuffles back to the group around the coffin, head hung low. "Gosh Miss Kendra, my mum would be so ashamed of me right now. This is one of those things the Professor told me I needed to work on. Sometimes my temper gets the better of me. I'm sorry for messing up your daddy's funeral." He seems genuinely contrite and embarrassed by his actions.

Smiley lets out a low growl and charges the man that was speaking. He draws his greataxe as he moves, but lets loose with a punch straight to the man's face. to hit 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24 oops for got +2 for charge, so should be 26
"You are so rude!" he screams in the man's face as he punches. He then makes sure both hands are firmly gripping the axe handle.

As Smiley gently sets down the coffin, for the first time an expression that does not remotely resemble a smile flits across his face. "Well, that is certainly very rude," he mutters not particularly quietly. about how far away is the group? if farther than 80' (charging range) he will approach til he is just inside that range.

Smiley gets close to the coffin and examines it closely. "Well Miss Lorrimor, I believe I can carry it if you need me to, but the burden would be better shared. I bet these friends of the Professor will not refuse this sad honor." His smile is very wistful now as he looks at the group and puts himself on one side of the coffin, and grips it underneath.

Smiley gives the newcomer one of his considering looks before he answers Kendra. "Well, ma'am, based on this guy's behavior," he points at Virgil, "I think that maybe there is something unusual about the plants here, or there is something unusual about him." Here he pauses for a long, long moment. "Though I suppose," he said slowly, looking around at everyone, "I suppose that there could be something unusual about both the plants and him..." His chin sinks to his chest for a moment as he thinks about it, then he raises his head with a big smile. "Thinking about things like this is hard, and I'm not a very smart person. The Professor said it would get easier with practice, but so far it hasn't. I find that I LIKE jumping to conclusions. One thing I do know though is that any friend of the Professor is a friend of mine." He walks over to Virgil with his hand extended, "Pleased to meet you, sir. Pleased to meet all of you, though I wish it were under happier circumstances."

Deidre gets her own searching look before he nods to them both and then addresses Kendra. "Well, Miss Lorrimor, we have not met that I'm aware of. I came upon your daddy near my home town. He was by himself, and being attacked by three wild dogs. That hardly seemed fair, so I grabbed two of them and bashed their heads together until they were unconscious. By then, I guess the third one decided it had something else to do so it left. Your daddy was hurt, and spent about a week recovering at my parent's house. We talked about a lot, but the biggest lesson I learned was that a man in my position should not jump to conclusions. Evidence, he would tell me, evidence is what you require. So that is what I am doing. Trying to get some facts before I jump to any conclusions." With that he nodded again to Deidre and Kendra, and strode over to examine the willow closely.

Smiley gives the odd hairy looking fellow a long look. He then turns back to Kendra. "Well Miss Lorrimor, I was darned near to crying when I received the news about your dad, and anyone will tell you it takes a lot to get me down. He really opened my eyes to a lot of things, and I could not have stayed away." At this point he turns away, and walks over to the mushroom patch and gets down on his hands and knees, and puts his ear right up against the mushrooms. perception roll 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20

dude, that was unnecessarily harsh. he screwed up, it happens no big deal. all of our creative outlets are somewhat circumscribed by the very nature of playing in a group game. a lot of these play by posts fall apart, and i don't think being adversarial with other players is going to help it last longer. i'm not trying to tie anyone's creative hands, but maybe we could be a little gentler with people messing up?

What at first appears to be a piece of brick wall with some studded leather armor hung over it slowly comes up the road. It actually moves quickly, but stops often to look at a leaf, or pick up something interesting from the ground to examine it closer, so it takes a while. As it gets close, it becomes obvious that it's a very young man with nondescript facial features and a faint smile on his face. As he approaches the group and takes in the weeping young woman and the coffin, his smile turns rather maudlin. "Hullo everybody. My name is Clint, but everyone calls me Smiley. Don't seem like such a good nickname for this, I guess."

Guide-Skirmisher doesn't seem to have any internal mechanical conflict, so that should be okay. hmmm, so we have to take a campaign trait? i'll definitely have to rework the background more then, and probably take two different traits, and adjust skills slightly.
sounds fine to me. i think smiley's background should work fine, just change place and people names. i do have the same question i had for stomphoof for you though jlighter, do you actually use terrain in your games? my feats are totally based around terrain, and i have encountered gm's who kind of ignore terrain. |
