Male Human Captain of the Guard
When some of you go tell Captain Ronald that you're headed to Resplendent and ask if he has any contacts there, he responds... "Not close ones. I've lived in Vigilant all my life. I do, however, know of the head of Theramark's military by reputation and have corresponded with him several times. General Garrund is known to be a ... strong man with strong opinions. However, if you'd like, I can write a letter of introduction for you, explaining the evidence you've shown me, in hopes of making his strong opinion toward you a more positive one. In fact, I'd be happy to return your bag of... evidence. I appreciate your warning us about this threat, and wish you well in your quest to crush its source!"

Vigilant Guardians: The Captain nods at Marius' suggestion. "Guard dogs. An excellent idea. We have two. I'll get them out on patrol now." He gives some orders to one of the guardsmen, who hurries off quickly. Otherwise, it seems to be a quiet night, with fewer citizens than usual venturing outdoors.
Male Human Captain of the Guard
Vigilant Guardians: When you stop by one of the main city gates, you encounter Captain Ronald, along with the other guards, who seem noticeably tense. The Captain raises an eyebrow at Marius and Rex, but smiles grimly at you and nods. Speaking to the other guards, he introduces you. "Men, these are some of the group that brought us word of Endurant's destruction." The Captain turns to you. "Thank you again for the warning. What can we do for you? Is there anything else we should know?"
Male Human Captain of the Guard
"Sir, they've not asked for payment, and have even filed a proper report on their findings." As Captain Ronald reaches into his own bag to produce Cernan's report, he also notices something else, and extracts a certain distinctive ring and dagger. "Also, Sir, you may be interested to see these items they recovered from the rubble. It seems there was a nobleman visiting Endurant who died in the blaze."
Male Human Captain of the Guard
"Yes, sir, but the worst of it is that these things can turn invisible, fly, and sting you with a debilitating poison before you know what happened. They're much more dangerous than a traditional soldier or assasin. I've already ordered the men on high alert and double duty, but I'd like additional resources to combat this threat."
Male Human Captain of the Guard
Captain Ronald gestures at the officer holding the distinctive bear axe. "In addition to bringing back an axe I recognize as Mayor Daniel's prize possession, these travelers also brought back a young girl they rescued from the ruins, the niece of one of our local carpenters, Max Gelthis. The girl claims that little monsters killed everyone."
Male Human Captain of the Guard
"Of course, Sir.
The Captain gestures at Lesith, Cernan, and Natanja. "These are three of the travelers who brought us news and evidence of Endurant's destruction."
Male Human Captain of the Guard
Meanwhile, on the other side of town... Captain Ronald leads Lesith, Cernan, and Natanja, as well as one of his officers carrying the sack and the axe, toward the Lord Mayor's estate on the edge of town. You approach a large, ornate manor house, set back behind a tall hedge with an iron fence. The guards at the gate snap to attention when they notice Captain Ronald approaching. They let you inside without much fuss, although Natanja's fiery hair and Lesith's glowing halo certainly get second glances. Captain Ronald speaks to a butler, and your group is shown into a side room to wait.
"Let me talk first."
Male Human Captain of the Guard
The Captain nods. "Fine." He gestures towards Natanja, Cernan, and Lesith... "You three, with me." He finishes gathering the things on his desk, including the report, the dagger, and the ring.
"Please hand Mayor Daniel's axe and the sack of enemy corpses to my officer here. I currently require them as evidence. However, should they no longer be needed, I will return them to you." He pauses and glances at Gina. "I am sorry for your loss, child. You are welcome here in Vigilant. We will endeavor to ensure the protection of this town, so that it doesn't suffer a fate similar to that of Endurant." Captain Ronald then steps to the side of his office door and gestures, expecting everyone to file out.
Male Human Captain of the Guard
The Captain nods at Eli. "Nets, bells, flour. Got it." He looks at Natanja, confirming contact location... "Green Tree Inn?" He also starts to gather Cernan's report and a few other things from his desk in preparation to leave for his report to the Lord Mayor. His hands brush the fancy dagger and hawk crest ring lying there. He glances down at them. "Why do I have these?"
Male Human Captain of the Guard
The Captain flips through Cernan's report appreciatively, nodding as he scans it. He then writes something quickly on a sheet of paper, signs it, and hands it to one of the guards in the room... "Put everyone on high alert. Double duty, starting now. Potential threat of invisible, flying enemies. Go." The guard nods and slips out of the room. Captain Ronald then looks back at Cernan and Eli... "You said these things are weak against silvered weapons, that you recovered silver and other resources from Endurant, and that you can make or otherwise acquire silvered weapons for our guard. If you're willing to provide this, I request such weapons for two-dozen men." He looks at Sister Azmaria... "You mentioned sending for back-up. If these others will be shooting enemies and not ceilings, then, by all means, send for them." He looks at Natanja... "Our resources are, unfortunately, limited, and mostly traditional in nature. I have heard no warnings of anything like this, until now. What men I have, I will use to defend Vigilant. You seem highly capable of gathering information. If you are able to learn more about this threat, about numbers and tactics, or about who is behind it, I would appreciate you reporting to me again." He looks back at Cernan... "You also mentioned magic traps against invisibility. I'm afraid I'm not knowledgeable about such things. If you have such devices, or a means by which I might acquire them, please inform me. We're more prepared to defend against traditional forces. A threat such as this ... is disturbing to say the least ... as is the lack of knowledge about our enemy."
Male Human Captain of the Guard
Everyone falls silent at Sister Azmaria's dramatic interjection. Captain Ronald glances at the fresh hole through his office ceiling as the two guards in the room ready their weapons to attack Sister Azmaria, looking to their boss for affirmation. The Captain speaks... "First of all, I don't care whether you're the Queen herself. You WILL holster that weapon, Sister. And if you ever discharge a firearm in my office again, you WILL be put under arrest. Do I make myself clear?" Two more guards fling open the office door, weapons at the ready. Captain Ronald orders them to stand down and return to their duties. He then continues speaking to Sister Azmaria and the rest of you... "Second, presuming Vigilant survives the incoming fiendish onslaught, you're paying to fix my roof." He looks at Natanja. "Third, as far as aiding me goes, I need more information. Are we talking about an army or an infiltration? When? Why? You killed three of these things. What do you recommend for defenses?"

So over the last several weeks my group has been going back and forth about how to make this class be combat effective. While much of their flair can be fully realized I find that it's borderline impossible to make them effective melee combatants with the severe limitations placed upon their class abilities. A fighter of equivalent level is near impossible to match, I understand that the fighter is SUPPOSED to be the best at what he does, but at the same time many other classes can find a niche in combat, where the duelist is forced to forego nearly all their offensive capability to be capable of using even their most basic class ability - Parry. So I'd like to hear some thoughts on the current state of the class, have any of you had any success in overcoming their shortcomings, or perhaps I'm just missing some cog in the machine that makes them tick. |
