Class Abilities:

Weapon and Armor Proficiency Rogues are proficient with all simple weapons, plus the hand crossbow, rapier, sap, shortbow, and short sword. They are proficient with light armor, but not with shields.
Finesse Training (Ex) At 1st level, a rogue gains Weapon Finesse as a bonus feat. In addition, starting at 3rd level, she can select any one type of weapon that can be used with Weapon Finesse (such as rapiers or daggers). Once this choice is made, it cannot be changed. Whenever she makes a successful melee attack with the selected weapon, she adds her Dexterity modifier instead of her Strength modifier to the damage roll. If any effect would prevent the rogue from adding her Strength modifier to the damage roll, she does not add her Dexterity modifier. The rogue can select a second weapon at 11th level and a third at 19th level.
Roof Running (Ex) At 1st level, a roof runner becomes entirely adept at moving across the tops of buildings, spires, and similar locations. Provided she is wearing light armor or no armor, the roof runner can move at full speed while traveling across the tops of buildings or similar structures, and takes no penalties on any Dexterity-based Skill checks or Reflex saves that might be incurred from moving about on a roof. This ability replaces trapfinding.

Background:

Growing up, Calano used to hear lots of stories from his mother, Telessa. A devout Desnan, she told him stories of freedom and travel, of heroes and adventurers. She told him about the places she had seen in her youth and all the great things out there in the world. There were also stories of the Silver Ravens, Kintargo’s rebels and freedom fighters, and the value of fighting for freedom and resisting oppression. Difficult circumstances meant that not all of stuck, though, at least not the way Telessa might have hoped. Calano grew up very poor, and spent much of his early years moving through the streets and back alleys of Kintargo and experiencing all that that sort of life would entail. Trying to avoid the local neighborhood bullies taught him to move quietly when he needed to, and to fight when he couldn’t sneak his way out of whatever trouble he’d gotten himself into. He also began pickpocketing as a way to help himself and his mother survive. He found that he had a knack for it, and so theft became a regular activity for Calano. Some people would work odd jobs for extra spending money; Calano found it easier to quietly relieve them of that money instead.

Calano’s mother fell ill and died when he was twelve years old. After that, Calano found himself placed in an orphanage. He chafed under the structure imposed on him there, and soon ran away to live on the streets that he already knew. He found himself stealing food and running from trouble like before, but now with nowhere to go back to. Calano began climbing on top of buildings to get away from danger and to find places to sleep. How could any of the idiots down there hurt him if they couldn’t even reach him? It made sense to him, at least. Running on the rooftops of Kintargo offered Calano more than just a practical means of avoiding belligerent gang members and angry citizens, though. Jumping from roof to roof, moving above the crowded thoroughfares and narrow alleys, and with nothing to keep him company but the sky above, Calano finally got a taste of something he’d dreamed of for so many years: freedom. On the streets below, he was poor and weak. He was a thief and a parasite, and he had always felt that the city would sooner rid itself of him entirely than help lift him out of the pit he was in. Running and leaping above the city let him escape all that for a little while.

He decided that in order to survive and make it out of his situation, he would have to step up from cutting purses and snatching food from market vendors. His first attempt at burglarizing a store was nearly his last. Calano managed to actually get through the door, but made a whole lot of noise in the process. He made it inside and didn’t see anyone. Figuring he must have gotten lucky, he started sifting through goods when someone clubbed him in the side of the head. The shopkeeper, a man named Antinus, took pity on the scrawny kid on the floor in front of him and decided to show him how to break in right. Antinus taught him the things he needed to know in order to do more than make enough only to eat for the day. He also helped fence Calano’s goods, and offered advice and encouragement to the trouble teenager when needed. It was hardly the ideal, but it was as close to a father figure as Calano had ever had.

Having been successful enough over the years to stash away enough to afford a small apartment not far from where he grew up, Calano finds himself stuck. He can finally afford not to spend all his time stealing and conning, but otherwise doesn’t know what to do with himself. His skillset and background don’t lend themselves to a whole lot else. He’d spend his time seeking out stories about the Silver Ravens and drinking in taverns, but the new Lord-Mayor made even that more difficult than before. He’s heard of a protest against the new government happening in Aria Park soon, and there’s no way he’d miss that sort of event. The way the Thrune takeover of Kintargo has happened, he’d be surprised if something didn’t happen at the protest. Even if it doesn’t, it’s a great opportunity to stay up to date on things happening in the city, and to help a few protesters make their trip home easier by making their pockets a little lighter.

Appearance and Personality:

Calano is a lean, athletic individual, standing about 6’2”. He has light skin and green eyes, and his dark hair is kept a bit long and scruffy. His features are narrow, as is typical of many Chelaxians.

Calano Baradin is a clever and dashing individual, with a sharp intellect and an even sharper wit. You don’t have to take my word for it, though. You can ask him yourself!

Calano projects an air of self-assuredness and self-confidence, even when reality doesn’t always seem to line up with exactly what he’s saying. He’s likely to try to talk his way out of tough situations if he thinks he might be able to do so. On some level he’s an idealist and a dreamer, but he’s largely pushed aside those tendencies in favor of pragmatism and self-interest. He doesn’t enjoy cruelty or causing direct harm to people, and he does care about those few people he’s gotten close to, but experience has taught him to look out for himself and his own freedom and wellbeing before anyone else’s.

He also enjoys the plays, storytelling, singing, and other entertainment and art on offer in Kintargo, and patronizes those artists when he has the opportunity. In fact, some of his favorite things to “borrow” from others are books of poetry and history, which he reads in his free time.
