The DC for these spells is equal to 10 + the spell’s level + the half-elf ’s Charisma modifier.)

Replaces Familiar

Ghostwalk (Su): Starting at 2nd level, as a move action after using a hex, an ashiftah can become invisible as per vanish and can then take a 5-foot step. Using ghostwalk doesn’t provoke attacks of opportunity. (Replaces 2nd level hex)

Hexes: DC: 10 + Int(2) 1/2 level
- Protective Luck (Su) (Heroes of the High Court pg. 9): The witch can cause fate to twist so that it benefits a creature within 30 feet for 1 round. Whenever that creature is targeted by an effect that requires an attack roll, including weapon attacks, the attacker must roll twice and take the worse result. At 8th level and 16th level, the duration of this hex is extended by 1 round. A witch cannot use this ability on herself. Hexes that affect the fortune hexAPG, such as cackleAPG, also affect protective luck.

- Cackle (Su): Cackle as a move action. Any creature that is within 30 feet that is under the effects of an agony, charm, evil eye, fortune, misfortune, or protective luck hex caused by the witch has the duration of that hex extended by 1 round.

Class Bonus: +1/2 bonus per level on Spellcraft checks to identify cursed items and on Sense Motive checks to notice enchantment or possession.

Character History:

I suppose that you could say that my history starts with a tragic love affair, but actually it wasn't tragic. At least not how I understood it.

Twenty six years ago my mother, Olmira Treesong, was on a family outing at the river front. She was a young human maiden of just seventeen years of age. While slender for a human she was quite beautiful. My father Ithanual was an aquatic elf from a small family that lived in the Lake Encarthan. He was also rather young for an elf and had little experience with any outside of his own race. Olmira's pale white skin and flaming red hair struck his curiosity and inflamed his imagination. He was alone though and unsure how humans would react to the sight of him, so he stayed hidden until he was able to approach Olmira alone. Olmira had heard of aquatic elves but had never seen one. When Ithanual surfaced near her, his skin glistened like beautiful pearl with slight golden highlights. His hair cascaded over his shoulders like a flow of turquoise. While he hadn't met humans he had learned the common language and greeted her with a beautiful clear voice. Olmira had been startled, but not frightened, and smiled when Ithanual spoke. They talked for a while but Olmira had to return to her family gathering. Ithanual was still wary of approaching the larger group so they didn't meet him then. By the time they felt safe for him to meet her family, she was already 'in the family way', and the meeting wasn't good. Olmira's family didn't want 'a fish' for a son-in-law, even if Ithanual's family had been willing. They restricted Olmira's activities until it became obvious that it was already too late. Unfortunately, enough time had passed that Ithanual had given up and stayed in the lake, moving on with his life with his people. He was never seen again, but he had left Olmira with a surprise gift. On the day after he had been driven away Olmira found a small sealed chest under the head of her bed. It took her a long while to figure out how to open it, but when she did she found several dozen small blocks of the red gold that was known to come from deep in Lake Encarthan. It was a small fortune and greatly helped Olmira with the expenses of raising her son.... Growing up raising her somewhat strange son might have been what drove her to become the strange druid lady that she is today!

Olmira never told me of any arguments with Ithanual, or any problems between them. She told me plenty of times that she could see a lot of him in my face, but the trace of gills on my neck don't let me breath underwater like his people. Maybe some day I'll figure out some way.... I'm not sure if she was disappointed that I didn't take up her druid mantle as I reached adulthood. She did teach me a bit of skill handling animals, but her spell casting just wasn't quite my way of life.

Growing up in Kassan as a pearly/sandy skinned half elf with marks on my neck that look almost like gills was.... Well, I wasn't shunned, but I also wasn't very popular with kids my age. I was a bit smaller, short and slender compared to others and obviously not fully human. Mother taught me elven. She had learned it just in case Ithanual ever returned and taught me for the same reason. I was intelligent and quite agile and learned a couple other languages of the other non-humans in town.

As I approached adult age for a human I was given more freedom than I expected. I guess Olmira accepted that the moral standards she had pressed were solidly impressed on me. I started looking for a career that was interesting but also might earn enough coin to live a good life. There were enough druids around that my skill training animals wouldn't do. I considered apprenticing to a ranger, but wasn't sure how much I would enjoy cold nights sleeping on possible wet ground in the forest. Besides, I had yet to learn much about using the weapons that I would need. When I met Jimes it was like meeting a little brother that I had somehow not previously known. I couldn't get an OK to work at the Seven Silvers for a while. But Jimes taught me the work for when Olmira would allow it. Mixing and serving drinks was simple and the tips seemed to be pretty good. Then Jimes taught me some of his other craft. He told me later that he hadn't taught me any of his rogue skills at first because he had to know that he could trust me. He had an.... interesting reputation around town and didn't want to risk that I would use the skills to the detriment of the local citizens. That earned him a hard scowl. Olmira didn't raise a thief! I've been working at Silvers now for a couple of years. The people around town know me, a little, and I've earned a bit of coin. Jimes says that he's taught me all that he can. Now I just need to practice what I know. An interesting way to say that it's time for me to go elsewhere to learn more....

Training Vignette:

Calaithes was headed back to the Seven Silvers after stopping by Olmira's home for a short breakfast. While he accepted that she had birthed him, he barely considered her to be mother anymore. He was 26 years old today but looked like a human teenager. He had accepted that he would likely bury the lady before he would have the look of an adult. Fortunately there were others like him in the town, a few others. He chuckled when he thought about Kayle and Owen. The boy and his dog had been leaving at a dead run just as he had arrived. Olmira had accepted Kayle as apprentice, but Calaithes could see that she felt more like a mother to that one than she did to him. He could resent that, but.... Why?

Arriving at the Silvers he quickly moved through the front room to get an apron. There weren't any customers at this hour but Jimes expected everything cleaned up from last night's business. He spotted the usual broken glass swept into the corner and quickly dug out the dust pan to sweep it up. "You need to find a mage apprentice to 'mend' the glass back together Jimes. Melting it and re-casting it to mugs doesn't make the glass any stronger. Pity that we can't just have all pewter mugs, or steel! That might dent but wouldn't shatter." Dumping the glass shards into the 'recycle' bucket he puts the pan back on the shelf. He'd need it again later, for dirt.

Jimes poked his head out from the back of the inn. "Why are you speaking halfling boy? You think it's a secret language that others around here can't understand? What have I told you about that? Anger me that I taught you. Was that deliberate or did you just forget again? Don't stop working. Gather what shouldn't be on tables, then wipe them. Set the chairs up so you can sweep proper. Oh, those two broken ones need to be out on the front porch. I'm getting them fixed. Boys fighting.... Good thing they had coin to pay the damages, and even a few to go home with after I kicked them out. I hope they notice that their purses aren't empty once they wake up." Calaithes barely scowled at Jimes words. He hadn't stopped working. Hadn't even slowed down. Jimes had been very clear while training him. Act, don't react! Even a man barely awake from drink might feel a tug at his purse. But if he then sees you holding the plate that he'd 'accidentally' dumped on himself he might not realize what really happened. Jimes had also been very clear that nobody stole from his customers! You could help them pay their bar tab, and verify that they had funds to pay for the next round. But stealing would cost.... Well, it would cost everything.

While he swept he thought about Jimes. The man.... Yes, he was a halfling, but he was an adult and a highly respected citizen of the town. The man was the best thing that had ever happened to Calaithes. He might have been able to force himself to learn the ways of his mother. He certainly felt drawn to something beyond this world. Omira tried to explain once about 'the First World', but.... It was a druidic lesson. "So Jimes, that pile of glass looked like three mugs. How'd that happen? When I left here after dinner last night there wasn't one. How'd you let three get dumped? Was it those strangers in town? The half orc looked to be a warrior type but the others looked more like merchants. ??" Jimes had come out sometime while I was working and I got a surprise poke in the ribs for my question. "Right about the half orc. He was a nasty drunk. Wanted to fight a half dozen local men while he could barely stand straight. If he'd suggested it before he was in his cups I might have arranged something for him. Padded fists so none'd be killed and I might have been able to charge admittance to watch. And arranged some betting."

"Get the dust pan to finish with your sweeping. I didn't tell you to stop, just gave an answer. And once you're done with that get the bucket, some cold water and the rags. You had to have seen the dried blood over there on the wall. Don't want to upset a customer with a weak stomach! Oh, but you're wrong about the other men. The dandy probably is a merchant, much as he pretended to be a bard.... No bard would bend the strings of his instrument as poorly as he did though! And then think that he deserved some coin for his tunes. HAH! But that dark haired human? He put two men down swinging nothing but a belt pouch. It was weighted with a steel ball though so a pretty effective weapon. Those lads both had a nasty lump on their heads, but they're probably already awake. T'was them that broke two of the glass mugs, idiots threw their drinks at the half orc! I think he'd have killed them for that, waste of good ale, but that pouch put them both down in bare seconds. All in all, a good fight except for the stupidity. Pity that you missed it. I'd have had you 'accept' the payment from those boys!"

With the cleaning done Jimes led to the back of the inn. Calaithes saw the chest sitting on the preparation table. "More lock training? I didn't bring my tools with me, can I borrow yours?"

"Borrow mine? Never, and why do you keep asking? There's bent forks in the bin. They should do for this. That lock is pretty simple. But.... It might be trapped. Better be careful!" He grins and steps back to watch.

Calaithes opened the junk bin and picked through it. Yes, there were bent forks, and wire, and other junk that he could use. He approached the chest and examined it from all sides before even touching it. He talks to himself quietly while he examines it, "No oils or anything on the surface. Nothing indicating a dusting. Hmm...." He takes a long wire, dropping one end into the water in the sink and touching the lock and various points on the chest. "No shock traps then." Switching to a couple of thin wires he inserts them into the lock and feels around carefully. "Hmmm. Not sure how you thought I could open this with bent forks. One fork tine, and this wire though...." He almost laughs when the lock falls open. It had been easier than he expected. Much easier. He glances at Jimes.

Jimes shrugs, "The chest isn't open yet. I didn't tell you to open the lock. That isn't even a challenge. Now your friends are all standing around waiting for you. Are you going to have them open it? And maybe get roasted to ash? That's what I've trained you for. And the skill you lack. Keep your attention to the job or I'll need to find another apprentice. Now finish the work. You'll know if it kills you and then you can clean up the mess!"

Calaithes turns back to the chest. The lock hadn't been the test. He put the tools aside and remove the lock from the latch, setting it on the table. Examining the chest he takes two bent forks from the bin with a smile. Perhaps the words were a clue? He searches the entire chest again, scratching the edges with the forks but finding nothing. Jimes mocks, "Come on. Lunch crew will be here shortly and they don't need to see this lesson." Calaithes uses one fork and levers the lid up just enough to slide the other in. Sliding it around he still detects nothing. What was he missing? He lifts the lid a bit more and tries to look through the gap.

The blast of red powder blinded him and the surprise sets him onto his backside as Jimes howls with laughter. "Dead! And now you clean up the mess! Next time remember to check the latch before you open a chest." He hangs the lock back on the latch and pulled it down until an obvious 'click' was heard, then lifts the lid. "And why'd you put your face right in the blast path? Get yourself to the pump and wash the powder out of your eyes, and be glad I didn't decide to add anything but flour and color to it. A bit of black pepper might have taught you better!"

Once he had washed the red flour from his eyes, face, neck, and shirt, he returned to clean up the area around the test. The table would be needed for food prep before the cooking started. And they wouldn't want red colored flour messing up the food. Another failed test. Why did he have so much trouble with traps?

Note and Veil:

Calaithes,

I have watched you in town. You are one of the Touched. In my home, we would have called you an Ashiftah. If it is true, then wear this cloth around your face. If I am right, then you will know. And then, if you wish to talk of your father, come find me on your return.
