Cabe's unrequited love for Sara Morninghawk has made him into the laughingstock of Trunau. Even though he has never cherished any hope, he's been smitten since the first time he looked into her eyes and now he serves as one among her many apprentices, working with gritted teeth and stealing a glance now and then. Once he smashed his own hand with his hammer just to dull the pain but these days he is more resigned and sort of content with his lot.
He originally came to Trunau as an orphan after his family was slaughtered by a dragon. At least, that is what he has been told; he was too young to remember any of it and prefers not to dwell on it, but he nurtures a secret dream of one day fashioning a dragon-slaying sword.
