Before he became a space marine and received his name, Zedkiel was a underhive ganger. He does not remember his family, only fighting to survive with other scum against other gangs, unholy monsters from deeper in the hives, and the arbites and debauched nobles who hunted them from the upper parts of the hive. When the orks came, they pushed up through the depths of the hive and and to the bottom of the upper hive before a line was drawn, leaving thousands of people trapped, including the lower gangs. Zedkiel and his gang survived for a year in an ork held hive before the Black Templars came, hiding and preying off the orks and other surviving humans. The angels of the Emperor tore through the stalemate, and pushed into the deeper hives. Zedkiel did not know of the wider war, but knew that he and his fellows were locked in battle for their lives when giants in black armor came rushing down, slaughtering greenskins. Where other gangers took the opportunity to scatter, he kept fighting. One of the space marines grabbed him, and dragged him on with them. He was forced to keep fighting the orcs alongside these superhumans, but survived, and when the fighting was over he was taken with them to become a neophyte. He rose up and was eventually given the title initiate. As a neophyte, he was marked for talent as an apothecary, and took the name of the fallen apothecary Zedkiel upon becoming a full space marine. He served well over the decades, slaying the enemies of mankind and delivering mercy to his brothers in whatever manner required. His last mission before being assigned to Deathwatch was assisting in retaking a hive in mass revolt, likely incited by Chaos or witchery. The Angels of Death tore through the rebels, but took losses where the enemy stole heavy arms or collapsed parts of the hive. It was part of Zedkiel's responsibilities to put the captives to the question. The rebels were not under the influence of chaos, but rather revolted under the cruelty of corrupt leadership. He executed all of his prisoners, not turning them over to the ecclisiarchy or allowing them to be properly punished. This act of softness was a black mark against his record, and he was sent to join the Deathwatch as an act of penance, casting him from his brothers, and as a way for him to rekindle proper hatred in his heart by fighting against the most vile abominations the galaxy had to offer.
