Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Broderus watches carefully as Joyabraund passes the blade over to Ameiko.

"Miss, we may have discovered something even more interesting than that sword. Look over at this letter. It was found in the same location as the weapon, a place we barely escaped with our lives. According to Seiji's translation, the writer shares your family's name. Perhaps an ancestor? My attention was especially caught by the mention of a treasure underneath a structure called Brinewall Castle. You may be due a sizeable inheritance."

Broderus then leans back in his chair and dubiously peers into his tankard of ale.

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Broderus shifts in his chair, getting more comfortable and placing some of his gear under the table. He raises his hand in greeting to Valcrim but frowns a bit upon seeing Koya.

"Madam, is everything all right? You have me a little worried by your grave expression."

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Broderus looks about the room wildly, a bit overwhelmed by the huge throng of people singing loudly. He sees Sandru at the bar and makes a mental note to give him his regards later. Moving alongside Treygan and Seiji, he also quietly slides into a chair at the table.

Nodding at Joyabraund, he says, "I see you've worked the crowd into quite a frenzy. I half expect them to carry you up at any moment and make you the mayor of this quaint little town!"His expression is serious, but a reluctant grin tugs at the corners of his mouth.

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Oh, the wakizashi, of course! Thanks for setting me straight Valcrim!

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Valcrim, I guess it doesn't matter right now, but I thought Broderus took possession of the sword. I even added to my character sheet as his new primary weapon.

However, we never saw any additional combat after the caves, so I'm completely okay with ret-conning it that Vaclrim had it the whole time. Is everyone still okay with me taking it as my new main weapon?

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

"Yes Sheriff, I am in no great hurry to leave this town as well. We can settle our accounts and discuss the details of our adventurers tomorrow morning. Is that agreeable with you too Banker Hazel?"

After hearing her reply, Broderus also gives Seiji a tight smile. "Mind if I come along with you Seiji? I'm not one for overindulging on spirits, but a warm meal would feel good after days of field rations. We should probably catch up with Joyabraund and Valcrim; I bet they've saving seats for us."

He also runs a hand through his hair and feels the growing brisles on his face. I could use a good bath as well. The smells of the swamp don't bother me, but the decay from the goblin bounty is repulsive.

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Looking sideways at Seiji, Broderus shifts his weight uncomfortably and focuses his gaze on a spot on the sheriff's desk. Back in civilization, he is clearly out of his element and doesn't remotely resemble the confident guide of just a few hours ago.

Nevertheless, he licks his lips deliberately and looks up at Sheriff Balor and the banker, Hazel. "We also encountered a bit of an undead problem in some caves by the river. A couple of skeletons..."

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Remembering how he felt a bit uncomfortable around Ameiko, Broderus also joins Treygan and Seiji, "I will come with you two as well. Better to settle things first with the sheriff, before our thoughts turn to leisure."

I have enjoyed traveling with my companions, but is this the end of the road for us? With the mission completed, do we now go our separate ways? Is it already beginning?

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

"That sounds like a wise choice to me as well. Come Seiji let's find us a safe path back to Sandpoint."

Survival - 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Getting no response, Broderus tries the door and if it opens, he enters the shack, moving very carefully for fear of this building collapsing as well.

If necessary,
Acrobatics

Also,
Perception
- 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

"Yes, yes, of course", Broderus says, a bit embarassed about completely forgetting about the second building. He walks over there and knocks soundly at the door, listening for any response.

Perception - 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Broderus wrinkles his nose at the sorry state of the shack, especially disgusted by all of the overgrown fungus.

"Perhaps Joyabraund has the right idea in staying outside. I'm content in our victory against the goblins and undead. Why tempt fate in this deathtrap? I also cannot see the value in cutting down the swamp's vibrant, strong trees simply to support these walls for the few moments we're here. I vote to return to Sandpoint."

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

"Wait Seiji, there could be danger within!"

Broderus quickly hustles through the open doorway as well, hoping to join Seiji before any danger finds the alchemist.

Perception - 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Not wanting Valcrim to face possible danger alone, Broderus moves up alongside the dwarven cleric. Holstering one weapon, his mace, he uses his free hand to push aside some of the vines and look into the empty window space. He also listens for any movement or other reaction to Valcrim's knock.

Perception - 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Final position is at G-7.

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Broderus grimaces at the grotesque display and feels a cold sweat run down his back. He looks at the bones, trying to determine if they are of animal or human/humanoid origin.

Knowledge (Nature) - 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6

I guess Broderus missed class the day they taught bone identification! :(

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Nice roll Seiji! Looks like we know who's taking point on this leg!

Broderus nods to the Tian alchemist and begins surveying the landscape, looking for safe passage.

Survival - 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Knowledge (Nature) - 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24

Broderus' attempt to pet a cat ends in the creature scurrying away into the underbrush, and the ranger scowls in mock indignation. "During my sea journey from Sargava, I learned ship's cats often have multiple toes like these, so maybe this colony came from that wreck we saw earlier..."

He also sneaks a peek at Joyabraund's map, "I don't know about the rest of you, but I feel energized this morning. There's nothing like sleeping under the stars with a cool wind at your back. We have one final point remaining on the map, and I'm game to explore it if the rest of you are agreeable."

Seiji wants to return to Sandpoint, and I was off the same mind last night. However, I got this nagging voice in the back of my head that we haven't learned all of the swamp's secrets quite yet.

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Seeing Seiji stop, Broderus also pauses for a moment and listens for the telltale sounds of any potential threats.

Perception:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

"I think we should rest at nightfall, just not in these caves. No disrespect Valcrim, but I feel more comfortable outside, especially with the undead threat and that spider lurking around here."

"Once we find a secure spot, we make camp and then set out back to Sandpoint tomorrow."

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

"Many thanks Treygan. I will take this sword then and use it to the best of my abilities, Erastil willing, against our enemies."

Broderus then turns towards his halfling companion,"Joyabraund, Seiji has a good point. Let's take a look at your map and see if we find a way out of this swamp. It will be good to relate our successes to the people of Sandpoint."

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Broderus glances over to the skeleton's remains, "I share Seiji's sentiment. If the dead rose once, what's to stop them from rising again?
I suggest we head out and look for a more defensible spot outside."

He also turns to Joyabraund,"A good suggestion about the spoils of battle, my friend. I already have 2 potions from our earlier battles, so the rest of you should divide these. As for the sword, I'm open to taking it, but Treygan, you should get first choice at it. It would be fair recompense for what that hellion did to you."

Quick question, Hu5tu: I take it Valcrim identified the sword as being of masterwork quality and cold iron. Is it a standard longsword or does it require exotic weapon proficiency due to its eastern background?

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Nicely done! I'll gladly take that 9. :)

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Broderus turns slightly at the dwarf's touch and nodds respectfully, "Thank you Valcrim. I would go into battle with you any day."

That letter is quite perplexing. Ameiko's surname, why does it keep coming up again and again? It all feels like a great puzzle we're supposed to solve. Perhaps I have finally found my home again with this group. Brinewall? Think Broderus, have you ever heard that name before?

His mind still cloudy from combat, Broderus stares vacantly at the chest, barely registering all of the valuables his companions uncovered. Releasing his mace, his hand begins to shake though Broderus quickly clenches his fist to control the tremor.

Seeing Treygan's wounds healed, some of the color returns to Broderus' face and he smiles slightly, "I'm glady you're better Treygan. I thought the worst back there and thought I had lost another soul on my watch." He suddenly goes silent as if he said too much and welcomes Seiji's translation of the letter as a convenient distraction.

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

I love you Joyabraund! If you're ever in the Philadelphia suburbs, dinner is on me!

Seeing an opening, Broderus acts in unison with Valcrim and strikes again at the distracted undead.

Attack of Opportunity w/Flanking Bonus

Yikes, 2 confirmed critical hits in 3 rounds of combat! Looks like I'm out guys... Good luck with the rest of the battle; hope we don't all see each other on the other side...

Stabilize:1d20 + 1 - 6 ⇒ (11) + 1 - 6 = 6

Broderus fails the DC 10 Constitution check, leaving him at -7 HP at the end of this round. He dies upon reaching -12 HP.

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Regaining some of his wits, Broderus decides to focus all of his energy on his mace attacks in this dangerous battle.

Valcrim, thanks for the flank assist, but it'll have to wait till next round since I go ahead of you in inititative. :(

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Seeing Treygan fall, Broderus feels a haze coming over him, and a familiar buzzing overtaking his ears. Only the skeletal warrior can be seen in his tunnel vision, and he shouts, "NOOOO!!!"He hacks uncontrollably at the enemy with his mace and torch, hoping to avenge his fallen friend.

From the Pathfinder SRD: A torch used in combat is treated as a one-handed improvised weapon that deals bludgeoning damage equal to that of a gauntlet of its size, plus 1 point of fire damage.

Broderus slowly moves towards the large chest, fascinated by the intricate woodwork. He raises his torch to get a better look at the carvings and to also inspect for any obvious traps. "Yes, Seiji, I agree. This man was definitely an officer in someone's army, though I've never seen armor quite like this before."

He continues to approach the chest, constantly checking for any signs of traps or movement from the skeleton.

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Broderus thoughtfully strokes a wet cave formation, suddenly feeling very trapped by these rocky walls and yearning for the forest outside.

"Valcrim is our caving expert; let us do as he says."

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Broderus feels reinvigorated, "Thanks for the healing Valcrim. I feel much better."

He then turns to Treygan,"The northern passage sounds good to me. I can lead if you like, and I'd be more than glad to take that torch off your hands. I don't use a shield anyways, so no point in you forfeiting yours."

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Broderus exhales deeply and finally relaxes his vice-like grip on his mace. Valcrim took some minor damage, but we look alright for the most part.

He looks towards the party's stoic alchemist, "Seiji, these skeletons are wearing Tian armor. First the ship and now this. I had no idea the Tian race has such a prominent role in Varisia. Would it be acceptable if we examined these remains for further clues?"

He also looks around carefully for any other threats or signs of movement from the downed undead.

Comfounded with the resilience of the final skeleton, Broderus utters a silent prayer to Erastil and swings away one more time.

Hu5tru, not important to today's gameplay, but Broderus is actually using his own light mace rather than any improvised weapons. :)

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Ditto for me. :) Updated attack roll will be 19 and damage 10.

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

His eyes growing wide as saucers, Broderus steps back a foot as the prone skeleton stirs. Long have I head tales of the restless dead, but to actually see one...

Both of his hands tighten around his mace, and a cold sweat runs down his back.

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Hu5tru,

Thanks for your comments on the longsword/mace switcharoo. I actually did it on purpose, since I'm not sure Broderus would know about the vulnerabilites/weaknesses of skeletons. I remember Treygan made his Knowledge (Religion) roll on this earlier, but I didn't know if we had a chance to discuss it on the way through the trail and caverns.

How about it Treygan? :)

If Treygan did discuss it with the group, then Broderus stowed his longsword prior to touching the skeleton. He'll go through this combat with only 1 weapon, his mace. I don't have combat reflexes, so alas, no attack of opportunity in either case... :(

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Grasping his weapons tightly now, Broderus walks into the large cavern just behind Valcrim.

"These skeletons appear truly dead, but let me investigate a little closer."

Using the light flowing from Treygan and Seiji, he walks over to the nearest pile of bones and prods the skeleton with his longsword.

Move to P-9.

Broderus runs his hands through his wet hair, "Someone remind me to find a nice strong fire tonight."

A sheepish grin appears on his face as he realizes the party's two trackers took the worst tumbles in the water, even as their heavily armored dwarf stood firm!

"Yes, the wider path should be the better choice," he says as he steps forward.

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

The desired ending coordinate is F-18, and I'm moving in a southwesterly direction.

Yikes! Double Splash!

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

I'm okay with moving on as well. Broderus understands an animal will defend its lair, so he won't indiscriminately kill unless attacked first.

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Knowledge (Nature) - 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5

Broderus, unfamiliar with these surroundings, slowly shuffles into the chamber, his hands gripping his weapons tightly. He tries to stay in the field of light created by Treygan and Seiji, watching his footing carefully. He eyes the spider but doesn't make any overtly aggressive actions towards it.

I take up position at H-5 and just in case,
Initiative

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Sounds good! I hope you have a wonderful vacation, and I'll look forward to when you get back! :)

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Broderus orients his eyes to the dim light in the cavern and also looks around carefully for any signs of goblins or undead.

Perception 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

"I'll second Treygan's opinion. How about the dry path first?"

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Using the large stick he found, Broderus parts the throng of nettles and allows his companions to enter the cave.

"Seiji, please take my stick, so I may follow after the rest of you have passed through..."

Since I'm the last person inside, my initial position should be point B-6.

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Survival (Take 10) - 10+5=15

Broderus watches Treygan light a torch and move towards the nettles. He frowns and thinks to himself, Not sure how well that's going to work with the plants growing so close to the water and being green and full of life...

He turns to Seiji, "In case Treygan's efforts fail, do you have any acid bombs at your disposal? I'm going to look around the riverbank and try to fashion a spear from the underbrush. If I make it long enough, I'll be able to attack the nettles without having them touch my skin."

Broderus begins scouring the sides of the river for appropriate materials.

Survival 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Craft(Carpentry) 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Broderus clenches his teeth as he adds Valcrim's fervor to his own. "Yes, the walking dead are an affront to everything nature stands for and holds dear. They bring only corruption and decay to the living."

He thinks for a moment about that charlatan's promises about Abigail and exhales deeply. Gripping his weapons tightly, he forges ahead on the trail.

Perception 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
Survival 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11

I second Treygan's question. Broderus carries a mace and longsword because he knows some foes are more susceptible to either attack. Would he be familiar with the DR of skeletons as a first level adventurer?

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

We kinda went over it pretty quickly in character, so I just making sure everyone's okay with Broderus pocketing both of the magic potions.

Male Human Ranger 2 (Guide)

Survival (Take 10)- 10+5=15

"Yes, Seiji, I'm afraid Joyabraund is right. Here, let me show you."

Still pleased Seiji vouched for him during the distribution of magic items, Broderus waits for the Tian's permission and if granted, takes him by the arm and shows him the bony tracks.

"What does everyone think? Do we continue on to our destination or take a detour to investigate these undead footprints? I personally would like to follow the skeletal tracks."
