Briar’s first thought is that naturally an attractive woman would approach her now of all times when she has limited ability to do anything about it. Her second thought is that this is Krystal, one of Saul’s old flames, and maybe she is luckier than she first assumed. ”I aim to be a lovely sight to be seen.” She clasps Krystal’s arm as if they had known each for years. ”It’s my first time at a place like this. I’d be glad to have someone show me the games.”
Briar signs her contract after reading it without a second thought. Anything that someone might try to pull over on her she can get out of, and she needs to draw undue attention to herself. She gives the “succubus” a flirtatious wink before continuing on. Knowledge (planes) untrained: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17 She is not surprised to see a real imp, though she is not exactly happy about it. They are devils, are they not? There are few creatures she has a lower opinion of. Saul does have a commitment to his theme, at least. She scans the room to see if she can spot Saul himself before she tries out any of the games. Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (13) + 0 = 13
Diplomacy (gather information): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22
Briar's supplicants--as she likes to call her work clients--have always been a good source on info from around the town, and that was how she heard about The Blot. It had not left much of an impression on her at first, as she is really more of an indoorsy person anyways, but then one of her regulars mentioned a reward of 500 gold for identifying it, and for that price, she could be interested in a great deal. But that is a concern for another time. Tonight, she needs to cheat a devil. Pamodae gave her this opportunity to make herself useful and climb up the ladder, so she wants to make sure not to disappoint. She has stocked up on her favorite perfume--a heady, earthy scent--and wears a new red dress that is just provocative enough that she can pretend she didn't realize it. She keeps her also red riding coat on in the meantime. She needs to seduce this Saul Vancaskerkin, and she needs to keep her options open. He might be the kind to go for ingenues, relishing the position of power he has over them with his experience and cunning. Or he might be the kind to go after challenges, willful and confident women that know what they want and aren't afraid to ask for it. She only gets one chance to make a first impression, and she wants to get it right. Aside from keeping her options open, she doesn't plan much for the evening. She excels at adapting to the situation, and plans just get in the way.
Knowledge (local) DC 10:
She appears to dress and carry herself like a member of the House of the Silken Veil.
Knowledge (local) DC 15:
That’s Briar, called The Rose for her red wardrobe and her prickliness about being touched when she is not at work at the House of the Silken Veil. Knowledge (local) DC 20:
Briar has been an employee at the House of the Silken Veil for some time now, but despite her having a reputation for chattiness and gregarity, nobody knows where she came from.
Knowledge (local) DC 25:
Briar has some amateur skill with alchemy that she uses to make remedies and aids for other people. She seems to have a particular interest in raven tattoos. Knowledge (local) Untrained Onnello: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
I also talked with Onnello’s player and we determined Briar met his mother in prison. I speculated that Calistrians, with their focus on revenge, probably get thrown in jail regularly and the church probably organizes visits to support the incarcerated members and pass on their wisdom and expertise to the younger.
Of all of these, only The Ravens and “Broad Shoulders” were written with the assumption they will come up over the course of the campaign. Sorrel and Gladiolus Vervain—Briar’s departed fathers, a noble couple from Magnimar. Gladiolus was a trans man so she is biologically related to both of them. The Ravens—what Briar calls the three elves that murdered her fathers and attempted to murder her. Each has a tattoo of a raven in a different place: left-hand, right-hand, shoulder. She killed left-hand already. (Feel free to come up with whatever makes most sense to you for how to fit them in, and why they murdered Briar’s family) Shorafa Pamodae—Briar’s boss. Briar is currently tryibg to get in her good graces so she can find out more information about the other two men who killed her fathers. Alois and Holly Vervain—Briar’s uncle and aunt, respectively, from Sorrel’s side of the family that turned her out on the street so they could inherit her fathers’ estate in Magnimar. “Broad Shoulders”—Elven woman who Briar met five years ago and had an evening together. Briar confessed most of her backstory and quest for revenge, and the elven woman murdered her target for her and told her to abandon revenge. (I purposefully left her vague so you have plenty of freedom to slot her in easily, GM, for maximum drama!) Let me know if you want any more on any of them!
I tend to be more of a “I’ll speak up if something happens” person than one with hard-and-fast rules. Things can be handled well or handled poorly and there’s nuance. If something does come up for me, I’ll usually be like “hey, this is crossing a boundary for me” and move on as soon as it’s handled. All that said, I prefer to keep the transphobia to baddies, if at all. It’s exhausting enough irl without having to deal with it in my free time. I’m a big romantic irl, so romance between PCs is cool by me as long as both sides agree. I tend to include NPC love interests in character backstories to scratch the itch anyways. Briar is flirty but I know when to stop. She doesn’t flirt with men anyways unless she’s on-the-clock, so that takes out half the party anyways lol. I also don’t like PvP and only roll bluff checks etc vs other characters if absolutely necessary. |
