Hello all,
I am the GM of a Wrath of the Righteous Campaign set in the Forgotten Realms. I made my Worldwound appears in the frozen north of Narfell, and now it threatens not only Damara, Impiltur and the surrounding regions of the Unapproachable East, but the continent of Faerûn as a whole. I wrote something about it here: http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2q4sk?Wrath-of-the-Righteous-in-Forgotten-Realm s#4.
However, I was thinking about the issues, concepts and reasons for Deskari and the other demons to bring destruction and corruption into the Prime Material World. I understand that Deskari seeks to corrupt and conquer all life, but I sincerely was thinking about how this whole war could represent to the players a greater threat (!!!) than a Demon Invasion in the world. In addition, demons and devils (or tanar´ri and baatezu for the older fans) are very used antagonists in this kind of concept for a D&D/Pathfinder game - just look at the next release for D&D 5th and the Rage of Demons storyline. Please do not get me wrong, they are cool enemies and all, but their recurrence in all kinds of campaigns and villain themes could sound a bit repetitive sometimes.
Looking to some old books and campaign settings – especially the Hellbound – The Blood War boxed set for Planescape and the Book of the Damned Volume 3 – Horsemen of the Apocalypse for Pathfinder, I just had a crazy idea. Thinking about all the titles that Deskari hold (Lord of the Locust Host and the Usher of the Apocalypse) I believe if they could mean more than just titles, but prophecies to be discovered by the players and their characters meaning the following: what if Deskari was heralding (or being used) by another kind of fiend to literally bring the end of the world? In this concept, Deskari would be (willingly or not) be used as a tool to another kind of creature to create the opportunities to allow them to begin the Apocalipse on earth: the four Horsemen of the Apocalipse and their respective race, the daemons.
Considering that in my game I use both D&D/FR and PF/Golarion concepts, in the Lower Planes we have the demons, the devils and working for both of them, the yugoloths. The daemons would be a fourth (and much less know race) of fiends destined to bring the end of everything, exactly as imagined by the Pathfinder Campaign Setting staff. I found this concept of simply destroy all life of the Multiverse a great addition to the corruption/depravation of de demons or the conquest/tyranny of the devils. Deskari could even be working to be more than a Demon Lord, seeking one of the titles of the four horsemen (imagine him as the new horseman of pestilence or famine, creating diseases or hunger with his insects and locusts).
Following this concept, the four horsemen would trigger a set of events, to be fulfilled by the demons invading the Realms through the Worldwound and/or to be concluded by Deskari (or by the heroes themselves), to allow them to get things moving to manifest themselves in the Prime Material Plane and begin the Apocalypse - and this is why Deskari holds the title of Usher of the Apocalypse – he would be exactly the entity responsible to begin this event!
By the end of the day, in addition to all efforts that the characters would have to destroy all the demons involved in the invasion, they would need to discover (and solve) certain enigmas to understand that the demon invasion was just a background plan used by the almost unknown daemons to bring the end of the world to the Realms, and in addition to killing the demons the characters would need to face another threat representing the daemons, a very unexplored type of fiend that could bring the whole campaign to a new level, without the use of the same type of demonic/diabolic antagonists for the players/characters.
I would like to hear your thoughts and suggestions about this.
Thank you!
