Wonderful! Thank you. :)

Gloomblade Fighter VMC Void Wizard. The profile is more or less done. At lvl3 he will get a familiar. Going with Sage archetype Ioun Wyrd. Fighters don’t get many skills and this will let him get some knowledge skills so it’s a great pick.

Gold: 5d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 2, 4, 6) = 21

Went through so many character concepts. Forlorn Elven bladebound magus who thinks he is crazy because his sword takes to him. Changeling hagriven Bloodrager, who thought she was crazy due to hag-given dreams…etc, etc. Couldn’t choose, so I let my son decide and he thought this was the best. So here we have Bolkvar, a Gloomblade Fighter.

Crunch is WIP. But there is a background here that I left very open ended. I’ve no idea what was down there in the dark or how he actually got his powers. So when it comes up via GM as described above it will be a surprise to me.

While the character is a fighter, I love the archetype because of how flexible it is. Very much a switch hitter.

As a question though, is variant multiclassing allowed? Fighters get a lot of feats and I’d likely sacrifice a bunch of them on VMC if it is allowed. Probably VMC Wizard with Void School as it would be very thematic.

Background:

Deep beneath Janderhoff, Bolkvar toiled away. A mason by trade, his skills were always of use in one form or another. The dwarf had thought that such would be his life forevermore. That was, until he was hired for a certain project. A vein of ore had been found and a mine was laid, far from the hold. The clan which owned the mine had put out a job to hire masons to seal it up, without explanation but with promise of good pay. Bolkvar was not the type of dwarf to ask questions. Perhaps it was to protect their claim against orcs? Or it was for security against a rival clan? Regardless, they paid him to work, not to ask questions.

The job was done, but for the life of him he could not remember it. He remembered going there, and coming back home, but not the job itself. At first he did not think of it, but as the days turned into the weeks the nightmares began. He would wake, not feeling rested and unable to remember his dreams. Just that they somehow involved the mines. And as the weeks turned into months, his mood began to sour. Inexplicably he began to feel a darkness inside of him, which at first he blamed merely on the lack of sleep. But such an explanation did not mollify his friends, family and co-workers, who bit by bit began to avoid him. Recognizing the trouble he was in, he tried to change but found that it was a losing battle. It was when the shadows in his dreams started taking form that he decided that enough was enough. He had been down in the mines and had misplaced his pick. Without thinking, one formed in his hands. Terrified he dropped it, and it vanished before it hit the ground. It was, without a doubt, unnatural. He needed help. Leaving hearth and home, he took what coin he had and ventured out, looking to find himself and to calm the shadows that haunted him.

Likes: Strong drink, good pay and solid craftsmanship. Anything that reminds him of home and what he has left behind.

Dislikes: Arcane magic. He doesn't trust it, at all. Divine magic comes from the gods. And the gods? You can talk to them, and they'll listen. But arcane magic? Who knew where that came from. And nearly every problem in the world could be traced back to a smartass wizard who thought too highly of himself.

Phobias: Voices in the dark from a source he cannot see. He does not know why, but it terrifies him.

Quirks: Bolkvar carries a journal with him, that he attempts to write in every morning. The journal is not of anything he has done during the day, but rather it carries whatever details of his dreams that he can catch. It is mostly empty.

Angry nodded, quiet after seeing the horrific fate of that thing. He prayed to whomever would listen that he would not fall prey to such an outcome.

The dwarf walked forward, cautiously. Once to the corpse, he planned to stomp on it's neck to ensure that the thing was well and truly dead.

The dwarf shook his hands to get the blood and gore off. When that didn't work he walked over to the 'doctor' and tried to wipe his hands off on the thing's clothes. "Aye. Back we go." After a moment's thought he stood up and then violently stomped on the neck of the doctor, to ensure that it was well and truly dead. He resisted the urge to spit on it.

With a growl that could almost be described as feral, the dwarf pursued the doctor. Improvised flail in hand, he punished it for turning it’s back on him with an attack driven by pure strength and spite.

Did the doctor provoke an AOO? I think so:

The dwarf knew that whatever was inside the room was not going to be pleasant, but that still didn't make it any easier. He turned the corner, went through the door, and despite himself came to a dead halt, his eyes wide as he took in the new horror.

The dwarf looked at what was left of the man in stoic silence, which belayed the horror that he felt within. It a truly miserable death for the man. "Everything Chatty said is correct. I would just add that it would have been easy to silence the man by killing him. Whomever did this was sending a message." He said, grimly. "Another reason to never wander off alone."

For his part, Angry paced back and forth with agitation for quite some time. Now that the danger was over and he had time to process it, well, it was difficult to come to terms with. There was so much that was wrong with where the were, with his companions, with himself. It was enough to make one want to scream or to tear their hair out. He paced like this until he became tired enough, physically and mentally, that he was able to make himself go get some food and then lie down. He was in no mood for conversation, even if it was with his own thoughts.

While it wasn't he who was being laid into, the dwarf still stepped forward. "Lying isn't going to help anyone." He worried what Chatty might say if given the chance. "If we keep our mouths shut, will they nay be asking to leave? To scavenge as well? To try to go somewhere else? And then what will ye tell them, the truth? Would they believe it then? Lying, lad, is rarely a good idea."

Sorry, it’s (mostly) the munchkin in me. XD Was planning on some RP of becoming more attuned to horror and death to represent the abilities (sense undead) but I’ll stick to the fighter/barbarian. Also I completely forgot the limitations in the campaign, so my apologies for that.

Wounds (0) HP (14) AC (13/13/10) Saves (6/3/3, +3 Hardy) Init (+3) CMD (18) Pugnacious (1/1)

As much as I had planned to go straight Barbarian, I’ve decided that it takes way too long to get the feats that I want. So it’s time to multiclass to fighter. Specifically unarmed fighter. Why? Because I want improved unarmed strike and Shikigami Style. Not sure if I’ll take a second level or not, as there is plenty of time to consider it. Given that I don’t want to wait for power attack much longer, what I might do is this:

Lvl 1: Dreadnaught Barbarian
Lvl 2: Unarmed Fighter
Lvl 3: Vampire Hunter (Power attack, furious focus. Less HP, but much needed Ref and will saves with a bonus feat)
Lvls 4+ Dreadnaught Barbarian
Lvl 5: Shikigami Mimicry
Lvl 7: Shikigami Manipulation

So by lvl 7 he will have all of the feats that I really want for the build.

HP without FCB: 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
BaB: +1
Saves: +2 Fort
Feats: Improved Unarmed Strike, Shikigami Style (improvised flail is now 1d8 damage)
Skills: +1 Perception, +1 Knowledge Dungeoneering

Well it's the best campaign for it! Horror, PCs who feel weak and desperate, shapeshifters making everyone a potential threat...not being an a$$hole would come across as naïve.

The dwarf nodded, numbly. "Aye, to the chapel. Rest." He glanced over at Chatty and shook his head at the harsh words, but as he saw the wisdom within he held his tongue. Ironically, the man's lack of a filter made him all the more trustworthy. For he spoke his mind, regardless of how it made others feel.

Improvised Flail: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7

Sadly, a fully grappled creature was even harder to hit with a flail. So poor was his blow that he almost hit himself with the chain!

Flails, even improvised ones, were one the most precise of weapons. With Vex and the creature wrestling with each other, the dwarf paused, unable to find an opening in which he could swing with enough force to damage the creature but with enough precision to hit it. To accidently hit Vex was an all too real possibility.

The day had been a long one, and the dwarf certainly felt winded. But he was tenacious, if nothing else, and continued to silently swing away at the horrific creature.

The dwarf looked at the dog-like thing and shuddered. It was horrifying to look upon, made all the more so by how it was a puppy seconds before. It made him wonder if any other household pets were like it, and if one could trust an animal again. Or a person for that matter, given what they had seen. Wanting nothing more than to see it dead, he silently stepped forward and slammed his flail into it.

”Let him hold the club.” The dwarf said. ”A shapechanger wouldn’t ask for one. Their claws are dangerous enough. Let him walk with us too, lest he be shot dead like we almost were. Besides, it’ll give us time to watch him, and it’s two more hands to carry supplies.”

Feeling horribly fatigued the dwarf sat down with his back to the wall. He mumbled a thank you to his companions for seeing to his wounds and then looked at the prisoner with a wary eye. ”Aye. Ye say it isn’t what it looks like, but I don’t even know what ye think it looks like! Explain.”

While the others talked to the ghoul, the dwarf silently went about destroying the ghoul that he was fighting. He didn't let up, pushing home the advantage. A shove with his shoulder knocked it to the ground, and he followed up with his chain, striking it in the forehead. There was a *crack* as the chain hit, which likely spoke towards fatal injuries.

The dwarf stopped, his rage ending and feeling naught but fatigue. It felt wrong to kill something begging for mercy. Yes, it was a ghoul, but did it make it irredeemably evil? So he held his ground, ready to fight if it retaliated. But to his shame he couldn’t bring himself to join in. Still, he did nothing to stop the others, content to allow them to shoot it down. He knew that they were likely right, so who was he to demand that they be merciful?

The dwarf wasn't a trained soldier, that much was for certain. He did not hold his weapon as one who had spent constant hours drilling would. Rather, his fighting style was more reminiscent of someone who had brawled, using whatever came to hand and then relying on talent, luck and brute strength. His bloody flail came around, striking the ghoulish leader in the side. Perhaps if he had been a professional he would have known the secret of how to put power behind his attack, but that was a feat which was well beyond his abilities.
