I'm not yet sure if I'm interested, but I can think on it. Most likely I'd be playing someone other than Bailey. Chronicle looks great, and thanks for running either way!

"Sounds like a plan. So long as we cooperate and remain on the same page, we've got a much higher chance to prevail."

Bailey fires another ray, not wanting to get in too close. His buildup of caution leads to another missed shot. "Just give up!"

"Jeez, develop a reputation before laying the condescension on thick," Bailey mutters. "I quit that habit and look how happy I am." The stairs being a bit cramped by hostiles, the ifrit launches a bolt of fire down them.

Bailey crashes his way past the bookcases and through the fog, power already surging through him as he takes a good position to use it.

Taking a readied action to cast and fire Ray of Enfeeblement should an enemy come around the corner.

"Were we to combine our resources and powers, we could come to a higher point," Bailey follows up. "One at which we needn't be complacent under the rule of evil. If freed, Ranginori may yet triumph, for such a being's power stems not only from innate energy, but belief in them by others. Have a little faith."

Diplomacy Aid: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25

Saves us having to write on a perfectly good book. Not seeming the least bit confused or surprised, he asks, "Are you the Primordial Key of Ilyralene? If so, we sought your wisdom regarding the Untouchable Opal," he finishes in a quieter tone.

"Maybe we have to write it into the book," Bailey suggests. "But, because that could have disastrous consequences, using a less permanent form of script would be prudent. Agate, you know what I mean?"

Unfortunately, I don't have Arcane Mark and you haven't prepared it. So, other ideas?

"Libraries are great," Bailey says to no one in particular. "Maybe if there's time after we complete the mission, I'll come back here, s'long as we don't end up getting kicked out." He then follows Agate's hand with his eyes, leading them to the compartment. "Ooh. That seems like it could be important."

Is this cloud in reach, or at least accessible by using the other ones?

Either I wasn't right about what the hint was (mentioning someone important) or, more likely, I used the wrong person. It makes sense though, Jairo hasn't been around for a while.

"And we do so with the blessing of Jairo the Enlightener," Bailey adds. "No doubt you've heard of him, a djinn of some import who asked us to accomplish this task for him."

"My point exactly. Leave them locked tight for the next watch to find. Unless you fancy a forced nap the moment our backs are turned?"

"Kind of goes against the message we're trying to send, that we want a nonviolent, mutually beneficial exchange," Bailey notes. "One side tries anything, the other is likely to (try to) beat them up again. We'll take their word, for now."

"A bit of a bust, but it could have gone worse," Bailey notes, not wanting to talk to the sulis any more than the little he has. "Let's get back to Jairo before he worries."

I think we can trust them, at least for the time being. Might as well listen to them and see where it takes us.

I guess I'm slightly lying, given that I don't think their reason (whatever it is) is entirely valid. Granted, if they provide me with a very good reason, backed with good evidence, that seems like a good time to agree and not bring him back. In that case, we could also talk them into letting us research it later but not do anything with what we find.

"If Ranginori was freed, would he not be able to combat Hshurha, at least slightly?" Bailey asks, guessing the answer but using the question as a segue. "We must profess some ignorance on these matters. All the more reason you would do well to tell us. Had you explained your argument with detailed evidence from the start, without such flagrant use of spells, we would have listened. And if it is sound, we may give up on our quest."

Auto-aid Diplomacy.

"Thought they'd never give in to reason," Bailey mutters. With Pavo asking important questions, he waits for one to stem from a response.

Bailey feels a bit woozy for a second, but snaps out of it. He rushes up the steps a ways and launches another fire bolt.

Ah, good point. Looks like he might have total cover, tho, but it should still make him nice and toasty in the longer run.

Biting the bullet, Bailey launches a bolt of fire at the guard closest to completing their spell. Even if his aim continues to suffer as it has today, the web is about to get hot.

"I have a solution, but it's a bit cruel," Bailey calls to his companions. To the guards he raises his voice. "You want to talk this out, or burn? I'd rather the former, I hope you do too, but I can live with either." Already the ifrit's fingers crackle with arcane fire and accompanying menace.

Readying an action to use an elemental ray or burning hands unless the team or the guards object (but the latter better have a peaceful alternative in mind).

Bailey rushes into the chamber. "Or you could just tell us what not to do and why, a reasonable explanation is all you need to get us to stop...."

Double move.

"Much as I'd love to, I think we have all we need for this," the ifrit replies, looking wistfully at the other books. "And yet we've hardly scratched the surface of all this knowledge. What's all the ruckus out there?"

Having taken down the white barrier, Bailey follows Agate and Thaia down their path to help gather information. "Enough here to keep a scholar happy for a while."

Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 10

"Looks as if," Bailey grins. "Best to remain cautious for further acid, though." With that, he takes the pearl and puts it to the white barrier.

"I have all of these but Aquan," Bailey says as his eyes follow the gaze of Alexis. "And Auran will likely prove more useful here than my birth tongue."

I'll inspect the Auran writing.

Wisdom: 1d20 ⇒ 8

"I seem to have studied the wrong aspects of extraplanar mechanics," Bailey frowns as Pavo queries about the cycle. "And I was always more interested in chess than puzzles like these...."

Bailey follows Alexis to the field, a bit entranced with the garnet. For the sake of (a semblance of) caution, he waits to touch it to its respective barrier, to see if there is any chance of, say, an explosion. "A welcome change in Society work, but it pays to remain on guard."

"Well, that works too," Bailey mutters, though he is grinning. The ifrit peers down the stairs, and readies himself for the middle or back line should the group descend.

"Well, we have plenty of time to read up on the Lords here," Bailey reasons. "At the same time, perhaps those...less scholastic among us...can watch the door? No telling when our target, or someone tied to them, may enter or exit."

"Does it say that? I didn't notice," Bailey says, blissfully ignorant. "I was paying attention to all these books." The ifrit looks around for any staff that might be about. "And are we going to let such a small thing stop us?"

"We should probably keep this thing alive," Bailey notes as it hits the floor. "But shall we stay here and face questioning, or flee the scene of the crime?"

"Hold...still...you...wannabe...dinosaur!" Bailey grunts through gritted teeth, his shot going wide even with Agate's guidance. "I might be a lost cause on this one."

"Still feeling that mercy, Pavo?" Bailey asks coyly as he fires another bolt. "Relax, Shelyn won't fault you on this one. Unless she's the one messing with my aim, although I'm pretty sure that's just me."

In one fluid motion, Thaia swings her musket up beside Ollo's ear and pulls the trigger.

"Apologize to my tinnitus!"

"What did I say? Never a simple mission without violence," Bailey sighs as he fires a bolt of fiery energy at the creature.

"I asked it to explain why it wanted us to leave. It's just reiterating now, so the situation may come to going back with our tails between our legs, or fighting it. Another try, perhaps...? Kini idi ti o fi ṣe eyi? A tumọ si ipalara kankan si ọ," Bailey ends with a call to the creature, harnessing his inner reserves of charm. He then repeats himself in Common to his friends.

Diplomacy, Inner Beauty: 1d20 + 9 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 9 + 4 = 29

Bailey thanks the air elemental as they depart. Upon noticing the strange creature, he listens warily, ready to cast should negotiations go awry. "Said we'd be in trouble if we continued on our mission, to give up," he whispers to Pavo and the rest of the group. "Doesn't seem immediately hostile, said it was speaking as a friend. I'll try to chat it up. A jẹ o lagbara lati mu ara wa. Ẽṣe ti iwọ fi sọ eyi? Ṣe alaye jọwọ," he raises his voice to a more audible level as he speaks to the creature.

Is there a Knowledge check to identify this creature, and should I make a Diplomacy check?

From what I can tell, one thing we're doing is tracking down Jamila and her contact. We are also researching the Untouchable Opal and how to break it.

"We seem to have exhausted these fine people for information, at least an evening's worth," Bailey notes. "Given that, it couldn't hurt to visit elsewhere."

"Sanctimonious lizard?" Bailey mutters to Ollo as he backs away from Mithradatha, nodding politely all the same. "Either way, that went about as well as could be expected."

As they rejoin the group, Agate is just giving her report. The ifrit listens intently to her and Pavo, to whom he responds, "Worry not, I speak Auran. Ignan and Terran too, I doubt those'll come up, though. Thaia, Ollo, and I chatted up Mithradatha to some extent. He'll help the Society when he help him out with another matter, so likely we shouldn't count on him now. Seemed a bit crazy, but I'm sure I'd be in his situation."

"Get you the people who helped out Jairo. Got it," Bailey mutters, a little annoyed that Thaia has taken over the conversation. "Ah, well. I'm sure nobility has a drawback of some sort. Exactly what I managed to get out of."

As he expected, Baiiley takes a quick liking to Mithradatha. Like Ollo, he was also looking to grab the drink but catches the warning and balks away from them, nodding in thanks. "Indeed, and it would only be fitting to help, given the fate you've just saved us from," he grins as his companion looks to aid the djinn. "I assume the elf you're referring to is Rathmozen bint Zuurmat? Sounds like a piece of work, more so if she has children. No genie, nor other being, should be held in such captivity."

The ifrit looks intrigued at the former diplomat's stance on ifrits. "'My sire's role....' That's peaked my curiosity, now. What did efreeti do to land you in this bind?"

Pavo's Earth Affinity was earned in Ungrounded but Unbroken.

Is that one of the applicable boons? I couldn't tell, I thought it was just the one earned through the first part of Tyranny. If it works, I have this one too.

"In that case, I believe I'll refrain from talking to Almoshtari," Bailey responds as Agate shares her findings. "Even after my arcane talents, she probably wouldn't like my genie heritage or abilities if she thinks we're here for 'easy power.' On that subject, though, we're running a mite low on people and I always like to talk to such exquisite creatures. Ollo, mind if I accompany you?"

Hoping his dwarf ally has no issue, the ifrit follows him to Mithradatha, looking to see if his elven master is about. "And a former political official, too," he adds as Ollo finishes. "I am just Bailey. My old name was quite stuffy, hard to pronounce as well, and has long since burnt away. It is an honor to meet so many different figures from places beyond my home."

"I suppose that would make for a good read. Unfortunately, though, your appraisal of such a book's rarity is probably correct," Bailey agrees, seeing an opportunity. "But I can think of no better place to look than the libraries of Armun Kelisk! Such fine things I have heard about them."

Bailey looks to his own Shelynite symbol for guidance in the task ahead, before heading out in search of Vivek. "I've heard a bit about you, good things all," the ifrit begins. "My name is Bailey. I was wondering if you could spare some time, one scholar to another, although I must admit you are likely much more experienced in the trade."

"I've been given the rare opportunity to travel several different planes in recent months, mostly elemental ones like our respective homelands. It seemed prudent to take that opportunity to study. I heard tell there were once two gods on this plane, balancing each other out. But one was locked away? I am curious as to the how and why of this, if you know. Surely you would, great scholar that you are."

"That Vivek fellow, the veela, seems a great mark. Enjoys conversation as well as learning." Bailey shrugs as he surveys the nobles in their finery, looking quite at home in such a setting. "I'm sure something good could come of talking with him. Unless anyone would rather do so, I may start there."

Knowledge (arcana) +7, Knowledge (planes) +6, Spellcraft +6, Diplomacy +9, Bluff +8. I also have Intimidate +8, but that doesn't seem as good of an idea. Plus Inner Beauty to possibly nova a Diplomacy roll.

"Likely this elf has enspelled Mithradatha, bent him to his will," Bailey assumes. "A fate I would wish on few genies. I've heard about it much more often on the Material Plane, though. Interesting."

Bailey looks through a small rack of outfits, gratefully accepting Jairo's offer and selecting one for later use. "Seems simple enough, before execution," the ifrit says to no one in particular. "That will likely be harder, we don't know what exactly lies ahead. But I'm sure we can figure it out. These people can be won over yet."

"What would these important people stand to gain from us in exchange for their assistance?" Bailey ponders aloud. "I suppose the Society can usually find a way to return favors as favors become needed. We shall see. But perhaps you have information regarding these people, good host?" The ifrit's gaze turns from his teacup and fruit-laden plate to Jairo as he focuses his rambling. "Anything important about 'em you can tell us beforehand?"

"The other planes do seem much fancier than ours, with buildings made of precious metals and gems wherever you look," Bailey notes, his fiery hair waving wildly in the breeze. "I would like to visit the Plane of Fire one day and see it, hopefully in an equally magnificent state. Good to meet you, Jairo."

"Afraid I can't recall much about the place," Bailey frowns after wracking his brains for information. "Trouble with her emissaries...best idea there's just to avoid them. No need for a fight, yet."
