Cheers Ben

4 people marked this as a favorite.

Researching this piece was demanding but satisfying, and I did pretty good at interviewing for new field assistants and porters.

Dunno about the rest of you, but to me, the Balor actually LOOKS like a Balor. Not just some guy with a whip and fiery sword.
As it works out... I believe the artist we got to do our Balor, Ben Wootten, is the same guy who designed the look for the Balrog in Peter Jackson's movie. :-)
Um, wasn't that John Howe???

Yes John did the intial sketch, I resolved the final sculpt, under PJs direction and close dicussion with John.

Hey, Ben, I love your art. When I first saw this one, I was wowed by the way it captured my imagination. This goes for quite some others as well, and the creature art captures the essence of the creatures well.

One very minor point regarding your website: I think the buttons for navigating the galleries are very small. I would like it better if they were bigger.

Stefan

Thanks dude. I agree that the button are a little small, I will look into getting some done about that. Thanks for the feedback:)

So, I haven't seen the question asked yet..

A couple of your pictures are titled 'Dm Screen' and 'Players guide',
are these for PFRPG???

D

edit: Ah, its WhiteSilver Publishing...never heard of them...

They are a pretty small company, the Players guide was nominated for the Best Cover Ennie this year, pretty exciting. I haven't worked for them in over a year, it is a shame the work won't really get to be seen:(

New art work, I have added some new pieces.

Thanks for all the great feedback, much appreciated. I want to apologise if I haven't returned any messages, the contacts page is a bit buggy but hopefully will be fixed in the next couple of days.

Please let me know if you have any problems with the site, it is good to know if stuff is not working and I can upgrade my apparatus.

Love you work man. I especially like the Confrontation illustration. I think I have that in a book somewhere, but I can't remember ... was it from Dungeon mag, or one of the WotC books?

The illustration of the Sea Wyvern with the dragons flying by is great too.

The confrontation illo was in a Dragon mag back a while, can't remember whivh one off the top of my head.

Hi all, I just wanted to put up a quick post to say I have a website up, it has been a long time coming but I finally got organised.

Looks great, Ben! I'll get your bio page done on the pathfinderwiki soon. Mind if we include some of your galleried art and link it back to your site?

Thanks for the big ups, I would stoked if you were to do a page on pathfinderwiki, and link me up. Great, cheers Wiki Monster.

(2) That said, the second thing that occurred to me is that, boy howdy, pseudodragons have changed. Weren't they capable spellcasters with breath weapons in 1st ed? Now they are, well, a shadow of themselves. I hadn't looked closely at them since the advent of third edition, but they are definitely weaker than they were.

Think it was the fairie dragon from AD&D that had the breath weapon and sprll casting as far as I remember the lil' p-dragon just has his wee bite and poison stinger...that's what I recall, but then I am old and infirm:)

(Puts away Rod of Thread Resurrection) :)

I knew there was a thread about the artists who do work for Paizo somewhere around here - yay!

On to my question - does anyone know if Ben Wootten has a website that showcases his RPG artwork? Google has not been my friend in the search for such a place....

Hi Dalesman, I am sorry to say that I am (and have been in the process for ages, just so disorganised and slack)of getting a webite up and runnning. You are another poke in the right place to get things moving quicker. I wll get something actioned in the near future and keep you posted ;)

I'm sure you've managed it Ben all your other artwork for paizo has been topnotch.

The great setting has made the job all the easier:)

Luckily, it's not too far away from Brisbane, Australia... you are coming to GenCon next year, aren't you? [/pleading]

A couple of us from NZ, Warren Mahy and a couple of others have been talking about Gencon Brisbane and considering going. I will keep you posted.

Thanks for the great feed back to all, really appreciate it :)

Ben! It's awesome to see your work in Pathfinder. The Viperwall illustration was one of the best background pieces I've seen so far. And I sincerely hope you keep contributing.

Also, I don't know if you remember, but we met at GenCon in 2005 at an off-site cookout with The Game Mechanics crew. You had a portfolio with you for King Kong at the time. Great stuff as well!

Best wishes,
--Neil

Hi Neil, thanks for the great comments, nice to talk to you again. I would love to get back to Gen Con , if only New Zealand wasn't so far away.

However, I don't think I'll be the one to start the Woot for Wootten campaign. (would be amusing though)

"Woot" maybe sounds a bit too much like an owl with a lisp!!

If you did, you'd be my hero. Heh. So what stuff is yours? I've been through all the art so I'm pretty sure I've seen it.

In PF2 I did the Desna article, and PF3 the illos of Viperwall, repairing the keep, and Riddleport.

I can only hope none of that stuff hurt your looking parts.

And angry looks? I seriously thought it was the illustration for someone else just placed on the wrong page, at first glance. Or is this all part of your diabolical plan to frighten even DMs?
Sure... she did come out looking pretty angry. Or maybe she's just laughing! Cause she's excited about finally having a stat block, which means she can finally help out with the fights!

I agree she looks pretty mean, but I figured she is a tough chick about to go to work doing something she loves, if she looks frightnening then my work is done :)

That painting is awesome, but I have never seen it before. The similarity to my Sasserine illo is striking.
