About Behzar the Black

Behzar the Black

Short History:
Behzar was a student in the local famed magical academy. Despite showing promise as a youth, when they tried to have him conform to proper magic use, he struggled greatly, as he kept trying to do magic his own way. Of course, was picked on for his size and seeming lack of arcane abilities, as well as his overall frailness. He hid in the library where, after a particularly rough night, he found a secret room filled with books about how to break the rules of magic and exploit them.

He spent countless days sneaking off here, learning these darker arts, these terrible secrets. Though he only scratched the surface. Of course, once it was discovered he was doing so, they kicked him out and sent the books elsewhere. This made him... angry. He went and burned the place to the ground, as well as a few other high end locations like the homes of those who moved the books around until he was finally captured, hacing barely escaped the last fire he'd set, parts of one of his arm charred completely, earning him the nickname Bezhar the Blackened, or simply Behzar the Black.

Everyone just assumed he's crazy and snapped, though he really just wants to find more of those books, learn darker rituals, reach true power. And still on the loose is the one professor who got away-the one that burned him. Since his capture, he's quickly studied the place and is thoroughly convinced he could escape his cell with ease... but he's not going anywhere without his spellbook. Seems like the time to lay low, find some other inmates he likes, and stage a great escape!

Longer Story:
As a youth, the young, dark-haired halfling always expressed an interest in magic. While he had no innate magical abilities to speak of, he always was getting into trouble reading in his uncle's spell books and finding a way to make them work when they shouldn't. His parents, a pair of low-status nobles, were very proud of their magic-apt son, and spent a lot of money to send him to the finest school of magic. Half a world away.

He attended the school for many years, only getting a chance to travel home on occasion-even his summers were spent there, being tutored. For despite his abilities as a child, the structure of magic was something he was always having trouble grasping. He was constantly berated by his teachers and, once they'd all come back only to see he'd barely improved... well, plenty of people teased and tormented him.

"Behzar the Bizarre, Bezhar the Strange! Bezhar the dumb!"

His attitude didnt't help his situation. Always frustrated with his standing, he hid it behind nasty yet calm words. Always pulled some sort of stunt for revenge, even getting a few people to turn on each other, which made him smile, though a few teachers caught on and had him taught the lesson not to do such things,

Kids ad students were cruel. And of course he was useless at anything physical. So instead of any forms of roughhousing or the like, the halfling still tried to read, tried to study, try to get his magic work. He tried to convince his parents to let him come home, but instead they just kept sending money, wanting their boy properly trained. Eventually, they dropped all contact with him, and he felt more alone than ever.

Until he met a man in the library. Claiming to be a former student who now worked there as a cleaning man, Bezhar found him odd, as he was sure he'd never seen him before then. Still, the man was curious-especially when he offered his help. Taking him deep within the library, Pulling upon an ancient, worn text while stepping forward revealed a hidden room within the library only reachable by passing through that wall.

His eyes were filled with wonder at the concept, but looking around the room made him go from awe to fear. The room was decorated with symbols of Asmodeus. He went to turn and run, but then everything went black. Upon awakening, he found a pain in his head, and his eyes were sore, like he'd been reading all night. Remembering where he was, he looked around to find the room empty of the symbols and fetishes, leaving only the ancient collection of books. Unnervingly, there was a single tome on a pedestal with candles on either side. He approached it carefully, checking the title. Exploitation of the Arcane. While still worried, he couldn't resist reading through the book.

And what a book it was. All the books in there were amazing, though a bit dark. He learned of the limits of Sin magic, the power of bloatmages... though the part that interested him most was using exploits to tap directly into magic, followed shortly by the power of using subschools.

Though of course, despite all this, he still went to his classes, still went and did magic-and showed great improvement. The only problem was, they noticed that his spells were... different. The day he nearly set a teacher on fire while trying to cast Ray of Frost was the day the teachers had had enough. Demanding to know how he was warping their spells, they eventually pressured him into revealing what he had found. Though upon taking them to the room, not only did they react negatively from the content of the books, but the symbols and signs of Asmodeus were back.

As they tried to grab him, calling him a traitor to the nation, to the school, and to himself, he realized enough was enough. He couldnt fight back against his anger and fury. Holding out his hand, he let forth a rolling flame, catching the books in the library on fire. One of the professors glared at him before casting a spell, vanishing with the books. Crying out in surprise and anguish, he went to cast something, but seeing how they were all on to his powers now, they tried to tackle him to be captured and brought to the city guide. Still, he slipped away from their grasp, though when he was surrounded, the rest of the library blazing, he held up his hand to cast Flaming Hands. While they were expecting heat and gave themselves fire resistance, he shocked them using lightning damage before getting out of there.

But he wasn't done yet. Waiting till the hunt for him died down, he went and found the homes/dorms of the sleeping staff. Without a word, he sent each ablaze, intending to kill off any who had come to harm him. He was in the process of setting the student dorms ablaze when they finally caught him. Ranting and raving, they dragged him away. Though his rants were of the last teacher and how he had to get him. But not for killing him-he wanted the books, to learn more. He'd even badly, horribly burned his arm limb the burned flesh still blackened on his arm. All he had was the spellbook he had begun work on, though the guards took those from him before knocking him out.

Waking in his cell, almost hungover from being drunk with power, he found himself on trial. And, when interrogated, he put on a good act, pretending he had no idea what was going on, that he was there to try to help get the students to safety. As convincing as he was, the guards who had scratch marks from his desperation before. Then his voice changed, dropping in tone a little as he grinned wickedly.

"Well now, it would seem I've been found out. How... unfortunate. For there were still plenty of people to burn. You all have no idea how lucky you are to escape my wrath, my strength. Soon you, the judging, will find themselves being judged... by my flames. I have learned secrets and formulae, I could be one of the strongest arcanists in this land. All I need to do is study. Find those books. Learn the rest of how things work. I will grow monumentally powerful, overthrow the current regime, and lead you all in a world of my own design. All you must do is give me my book. I'll to the rest from there, if need by. No prison will hold me for long".

So they sent him to the shortest prison stay they could find before his execution, though upon seeing the place inside. The hardest part would be finding his book. Which mean't he'd need allies.

Personality:

Having grown up in somewhat lavish conditions, Bezhar sees himself above others. His education has made him smarter and quicker with words than most, which gives his oversized ego a massive boost every time he tricks someone or forces them into choosing what helps him. Manipulation is his game, though it pains him to use magic to help him in that department, preferring to rely on his charisma there.

He likes finer things, like wine over ale, silk over hemp. His hair is always perfectly coiffed, his robes always kept well. He has an interest in money and wealth, though more as a means to acquire power than to simply have. Afterall, he'd rather have a guard or a spell than a pile of money he can't use.

One could say he's very controlling and calculating, and they'd be right. He's a schemer. But he also loves it when things go out of control-that's usually when the fires start. Or the torrents of lightning. Or sprays of acid. All his coldness and calm outer shell hides the maniacal monster within, one who's just waiting to be unleashed.

Dimdweller (2 RP): Whenever characters with this trait benefit from concealment or full concealment due to darkness or dim light, they gain a +2 racial bonus on Intimidate, Perception, and Stealth checks. Halflings can take this trait in place of weapon familiarity. Source PZO9466

Special Abilities

Versatile Evocation (Su): When you cast an evocation spell that does acid, cold, electricity, or fire damage, you may change the damage dealt to one of the other four energy types. This changes the descriptor of the spell to match the new energy type. Any non-damaging effects remain unchanged unless the new energy type invalidates them (an ice storm that deals fire damage might still provide a penalty on Perception checks due to smoke, but it would not create difficult terrain). Such effects are subject to GM discretion. You can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + your Intelligencemodifier.

Intense Spells (Su)- Whenever you cast an evocation spell that deals hit point damage, add 1/2 your wizard level to the damage (minimum +1). This bonus only applies once to a spell, not once per missile or ray, and cannot be split between multiple missiles or rays. This bonus damage is not increased by Empower Spell or similar effects. This damage is of the same type as the spell. At 20th level, whenever you cast an evocation spell you can roll twice to penetrate a creature’s spell resistance and take the better result.

School Focus: Evocation
Opposition Schools: Enchantment and Transmutation

Arcane Reservoir: 3/4 pts Start of Day

Arcane Exploits:

Dimensional Slide (Su) The arcanist can expend 1 point from her arcane reservoir to create a dimensional crack that she can step through to reach another location. This ability is used as part of a move action or withdraw action, allowing her to move up to 10 feet per arcanist level to any location she can see. This counts as 5 feet of movement. She can only use this ability once per round. She does not provoke attacks of opportunity when moving in this way, but any other movement she attempts as part of her move action provokes as normal.
