Considering a ranger can get Shield Master without the prerequisites, do you even need TWF at level 6? Two-Weapon Fighting (Combat):
Benefit: Your penalties on attack rolls for fighting with two weapons are reduced. The penalty for your primary hand lessens by 2 and the one for your off hand lessens by 6. See Two-Weapon Fighting. Normal: If you wield a second weapon in your off hand, you can get one extra attack per round with that weapon. When fighting in this way you suffer a –6 penalty with your regular attack or attacks with your primary hand and a –10 penalty to the attack with your off hand. If your off-hand weapon is light, the penalties are reduced by 2 each. An unarmed strike is always considered light.
Shield Master:
Benefit: You do not suffer any penalties on attack rolls made with a shield while you are wielding another weapon. Add your shield's enhancement bonus to attack and damage rolls made with the shield as if it were a weapon enhancement bonus. Going on a limb here: at level 6 I can make an off-hand attack with a medium shield with no penalties and no TWF - Is that right?
Maybe I can take slow advancement at level 10. :o) On using the falcata: would it be better to slot Imp. Critical or get the Keen enchantment? if not Keen, would burst be a good choice? I dont think there a lot more to figure out. LazarX wrote: Is there a reason you didn't go Fighter with this routine? As mentioned, I was wondering how to best take advantage of ranger's Weapon and Shield combat style feats, particularly Shield Mastery - a feat normally taken at level 11. You can choose that feat at level 6 without meeting the requirements. Thanks again for the input

The 10 CHA has to do more with me not liking the -1 on skill rolls (my own personal quirk). Assuming I don't get a belt to meet the feat requirements of ITWF and GTWF, what alternate feats would you suggest?
Nothing is set in stone yet, as he is level 1. I was wondering about the possibilities of taking advantage of Shield Mastery (a feat with a +11 bab requirement) at level 6. Assuming its a worthwhile feat, that is. I know Shield Slam adds a bull rush attempt and is a pre-requisite for Shield Mastery, but he does not need to have it. Improved Bull Rush does sound nice, though. I'm also searching threads with similar questions and it seems like shield spikes and bashing do not mix?
I have a level 1 PFS ranger and I've decided to try out the weapon & shield style. I am aware its not the 'optimal' ranger, but I am wondering what the better choices are as he levels. A good combo seems to be a Quickdraw Bashing Shield to use with Imp. Shield Slam and Shield Master. Advice is most welcome. Half-elf ranger (Freebooter Archetype)

Ok, so a traitless, cha-based UMD bogs him down somewhat. What I wonder is if the ability make up for it, or is that effort better spent on making him a better flanker/skill monkey? Fighter sounds good, but wouldn't heavy armor negate your evasion? Or is the tradeoff on the level? Never though about Lore Warden.
I'm tickled to try out a Dwarf Rogue for my next PFS character and I need some advice. I have in mind a skirmisher- step in, hit the flank hard, step out (maybe)- and be a viable skill monkey. I have the core book and the PFS free sources allowed. His stats so far are:
I'm wondering about the 10 Cha, since I wouldn't want to lose out on UMD even if it may take longer to come through compared to other builds. The trait "Dangerously Curious" is on his list. Or maybe I should forget about UMD? I read on the forums about dipping a few levels in Barbarian. That looks like a fun mix but after what levels would that be recommended? Thanx in advance! |
