Best advice is just be honest and fair when creating a new race. It's pretty standard with the races they normally have +2 in two stats and -2 in one or humans just get plus two in Any stat. Then give them some abilities that make sense or even negative qualities if it fits the race.

I made a robot race not like the androids of starfinder. More like standard sci fi robots. I just have it +2 in charisma. Dark Vision and couple of other bonuses. I find it better to error on the side of caution and not go overboard.

Unless the campaign is going to be a certain type or the whole party is suppose to be over the top in a fun way then you can overpower them a bit. Even just give them a campaign related ability if you know what the game is going to be like.

So it really just depends use your best judgement. Standardizing races is fun but really I would guess how they even come up with the premade races is situational.

I was a star wars nut till Disney went and changed the cannon. Read all the books and everything. I have to agree with you on starfinder being a better option. It will be supported for a long time and the system lends itself to changes.

I was thinking about this. One of the characters in my game. My game is a medic type and has mystic as his class. The needler gun and even the glove do 1d4 piercing damage. Then you have to role to see if you hit. The way I read it you still have to make a difficulty check to see if it injects. Which I guess would be a medicine check. I have no idea how the medicine skill would help shooting injection darts or pierce through power armour.

If it were me I would just have them make a called shot like pathfinder rules assume the dart did its job after that.

Thing is I know my thoughts on the issue could be wrong. I definitely could not know the rules well enough. I could also be seeing how it would work completely differently than other people.

I am not sure about that. I made a tiny robot character a self made class I guess. It's not an android like the paizo class and was looking it up. In pathfinder I could be wrong it would provoke an attack of opportunity. In starfinder the rules have very few things that provoke an attack of opportunity. That isn't one of them. Personally I would look at it as situational. I mostly house rule most of the combat rules from pathfinder. I tend to look at things as how they actually would really go. I would play it by ear.

From what I can tell with the OP, this seems more a "what innovations are there in-universe" (a la Fast Food Restraunts, Internet, Video Games, and other things mentioned in OP) and less "what is this system going to offer players that no other system has ever had?"

Well it wouldn't be the first time I said misinterpreted something someone wrote or said something dumb on an internet forum

I hope they don't change the mechanics of pathfinder at all. I rather have 40 years of content down the road than them come out with a new system every 5 or ten years and having to throw out all the supplemental books, modules, and adventure paths.

I like starfinder but for me getting a possible 8 extra ability scores at level 4 and a few other things like that personally advance characters to fast. I know they have it to where it scales properly and is fun for people. My characters just don't advance that fast role play wise.

As far as the weapon levels go they could of just done that with money. In my games I kind of have weapons level up with the character sometimes. If the levels were like that it would of been cool. Kind like if you play a guitar for a long time you get better with that specific instrument. You unconsciously learn it's nuances. You learn the imperfections of the gear and over time fix them, learn to handle them better, or learn to use them as an advantage. Plus in real life a lot of stuff just gets better as it ages. I know it's been done before. I guess in my games I do it to a greater extent. An old trusty kind of thing.

Not sure if it what you mean with your question. Here is my take on it. It's a well thought out science fiction RPG. It will also be well supported. It doesn't have to do anything besides that.

A lot of other sci-fi rpgs are either niche genre or the big name science fiction names from movies or books that put out a some books then the rights get pulled and that whole rpg has to start fresh.

So right now there are only a few books and some info for starfinder but it's already fun and it gives you enough info to play right now. It can only get better with future stuff.

The settings pretty open. A lot of other rpgs in this genre are meant for people that enjoy certain things. I like the space opera type thing and starfinder is well suited for that.

So for me it may not be rewriting science fiction as we know it but that's kind of what and I like about it. It's got a lot of science fiction stuff I do like portrayed in a different and creative way.

It's kind of like rock and roll. Why change a perfectly good formula when it's better to just give us your take on it and put some soul into it.

I know it's in a lot of other rpgs but I have already had all types of fun with the disguise skill. I have just been getting a kick out of it.

Whether the system needs fixing or not if your playing games up to level 20 you probably know enough about rpgs where you or the people can play with can make stuff up after that level and fix anything that bothers you with the system in general at lower levels.

I just used the srd with paizos stuff pathfinder and starfinder you can make characters and see if you like the system with just that so you can't really complain about getting ripped off with what is out there for you for free from paizo.

The only things I really kept was the EAC and KAC and the skills list from starfinder. I find the less descriptive skills is more fun and a bit more realistic for the game I am playing and the disguise seems out there for this skill set but is really fun. Everything else I plug and played pathfinder rules and my own rule set.

As far as book quality goes the books are meant to be used.A book you got use out of even if it get's torn up in the process is worth more than any collector price down the road any day. The paper and the ink they have to use on these types of books is expensive. So if you like the universe it's defiantly not a rip off to buy the books.

The books and the pdfs can help at least help to be inspired in your game. No matter what your experience is you can go to a book store pick these books up and look through them and it will help you find an rpg you like that you can buy or help you create your own games.

I personally have looked at so many different systems I peruse them and come up with a lot of my own stuff and use the worlds and rules sets just as part of something larger I create.

The problem with that is if your not fair or trying to be decent with your fellow players it's going to be a bad experience and put you off rpgs which I hope it wouldn't. Plus a well nit already made rule set can help you learn to be fair and how to handle situations when creating your own stuff.

Honestly it's going to be tough to find any system that is morally perfect for varying reasons not just starfinder. I don't play in paizos universe. If I did I find it really easy to house rule any of the amoral stuff out of the universe on the fly. There are a million other reasons for players to have encounters with enemies than what they have set up. I think that's why it's set up like that. I would just make something else up and go with it.

Side note I never bought one of those phones your talking about. No offence if someone did. A lot of times don't think about stuff like that or know or even if they did they feel like there is nothing they can do about it which to me is understandable.

Thanks. I have been looking around in the SRD. I don't have any of the books. I'm using a few monsters and npcs that are ogl/given away as free content and some from the SRD and making my own campaign and mostly just using the stuff to put together a house game. I'm not even using the starfinder setting.

I did it with pathfinder and played. Didn't have to steal anything or bootleg anything. Just used the SRD and info people wrote on forums and stuff to answer any questions. Then I just used a map came up with my own quest and dungeons used some free to use stuff online and some of the free stuff paizo gives away.

I don't really have any money and I change/use different rules anyway and create a lot of my own stuff anyway.

I'm basically just trying to git the gist of the new system paizo came up with.

I know it probably obvious to most people on this forum. I am trying to build my starship and am looking at the bp cost of certain things and they are 2x size category. I can't find a number corresponding with the size categories. Maybe because I am just using the srd or maybe I am just a good and if I went through all the starship rules if would eventually jump out at me.

Your going to have to forgive me if it's obvious. Sometimes I ain't the best at things like this.

I found some that worked for me and didn't have any auto-fill. I just had to upload them to google drive and open them with doc hub. I think the character sheet is suppose to have auto-fill parts but it just works like a non auto-fill sheet which works well for me.

I also found a starship sheet that works well also. The one at 0-hour is great. The starfinder society one works just fine too but if you add custom parts it's not on that sheet. It would work great for people that play in society or just use stuff from the books.

I read a bunch about starfinder before I looked at it and was kind of Leary. All the changes from pathfinder I see I really like. Some of the starship speeds I might change but really the system and ship creation is
spectacular.

I know this is a paizo forum I am not one of those everything paizo touches it gold types of guys. This really seems like they went out of their way to make the system as good as it can be and they always have little notes about how to change things or adapt things for home game systems and rules.

I am going to wait till I make and adventure and play through it some but I will probably make a post saying what I think about it. So far I am more than impressed.

How did you get libre office calc to work for your sheets? When ever I try to fill about the skill scores a little green boxes surround the place I put the score and it doesn't fill in. Also the types skills are nudged over further than they should be covering the total boxes of my skills. Maybe your using a different sheet than me?

I normally generate my own characters thanks though. For pathfinder I had an online autofill sheet that worked great. It didn't do much. Just totaled skills up mostly. I have two operation systems on my hard drive I forget the site it's on my other linux install.

I am on linux and have been looking for a character sheet. I have tried a bunch. The only one's I found fill able were autofill which I don't mind so much but I can't fill out a lot of stuff on my computer. Anything that's marked with a zero were it does the auto-math I can't fill out.
Another thing I use mostly open source stuff and won't use adobe products. Nothing against people that do. The people that made the sheets I tried put a lot of hard work into them and I really appreciate it, but they don't work for me.

The only other sheet I found was the a google docs sheet and it does absolutely everything for you. It levels up your character fills everything in and that kind of takes a lot of the fun out for me. I don't mind autofill sheets but when I level up I like to go through the SRD and go back and fill in all the stuff myself. I catch rules I miss and it's just part of the fun for me. I also like to create a lot of my own content so something that does absolutely everything doesn't exactly fit into the game I am playing.

Don't have enough money for any books I am kind of poor but from what I have seen it starfinder looks great. I have enough with the SRD to get the rules and Will be making my own maps/quests/enemies. I know starfinder is young but it really looks like a great game. If I could just find a character sheet that I could fill in but wasn't autofill or something online that didn't do 100% of everything.

I will say this though the sheets I have tried looked great and the people that created them did a really good job.
