"Please...I only wanted to protect you. Protect us all."

His vision starts to clear with each blink. Each moment a realization that he is still kneeling, still breathing. A voice, yes, but not that of a hag. Of...

"Dandi."

Barael closes his eyes, and stands. His tail does most of the lifting, as his frame assents in resignation. His head lifts slowly. Only then, does he open his eyes, and looks. And sees her as she is this evening.

She is here... and she is beautiful.

"There... was stew. I remember that... at least. Smelled really good. No way I could deserve enjoy it now..." Barael goes to her, but keeps his distance, seeking to avoid offense with his vomit breath.

"I'm sorry. I think it would... have been a... lovely evening. It was... I should have... so many thoughts..." Barael places his paws over his face, helping concentration, and subconsciously shielding himself from Dandi's gaze.

"It's become real now. The sword. It's real now. We have it." Barael slows his talk, choosing his words very carefully. "Inn't it enough, what we done? So much already. Can't we let the *hic* burden pass to someone else?" Barael brings his hands down, and looks into Dandi's eyes, seeking kindred thought.

"I just... don't know if I can... keep you safe. You know, protect us all. Best way to avoid the danger is to stay away, right?" Barael shakes his head. "That's not right, is it? Not right at all. I'm sorry, it's just..." Barael falls into silence, the only noise the slow scrape of tail on stone, as he continues to sway.

"Zastavit ... ve jménu lásky ... před zlomit mé srdce!"

His mouth drops open. The taste of blood, sweat salts, and bits of arm hair fill Barael's mouth. He expects to hear bellows of outrage, but he realizes that the giant's eyes are elsewhere. Suddenly, Barael is afraid to turn around, and look.

"Barrrrieee... It's time..." The pounding of blood in Barael's ears prevents him from hearing anything else. The Hag!!! She's come for me!!! Barael suddenly freezes in place, against his will. The will that seeks to bring forth the Shift... Time slows, and he feels himself being ripped from the bistro, as the Hag envelops him from behind.

A light frothing begins to form around his mouth, the wind whipping it free as the two begin to rise into the darkness of the city heights. His body starts its transformation.

The sounds of bones cracking, rearranging, are transmitted through their joined skin. In intimate proximity, Dandi can hear muffled mewls that rise as a result of his lungs compressing, and air passing across his vocal cords. As the hair starts to fill in, his muzzle extends, bringing the teeth. His eyes distend, the whites changing to full black. He sees nothing, hears nothing. A vulgar bulge presses into Dandi's pelvis, forcing her to adjust for the elongation of his tail. The changes slow, but his heart beats mercilessly, while his breathing becomes quick and shallow.

We fly...! There is no grey curtain through which we pass... There are no waters into which we plunge... Be ready. The first moment she releases you, you must be ready to strike.

As they clear the rooftop, he feels the Binding begin to unravel, feels them separate as they begin to fall towards the stone rooftop. The Binding ends, but gives him no time to tuck and roll. The stone rushes up to meet him, his jaw breaking his fall. He bites his tongue, renewing the taste of blood in his mouth. He skids and turns, ready to face his nightmare. His bleary eyes see the kelp-like hair, sees the fading glow from the eyes, the face still draped in shadows.

"You'll... not take me... without a fight, Sea Wench!!" Barael stumbles, reaches for Black Tooth, and misses. "Me and mine... we'll... we will finish you and yours..."

The disorientation proves too much for the wererat. Barael drops to his knees, and heaves deeply, regurgitating bile and wine.

Briar wrote:
"You are right, Barael. I saw the same thing. He planned his actions in advance....chose to run for glory the moment he decided to lend you the holy longsword. I see now, in retrospect, that his designs were on that."

Barael considers Briar's concerns. "He said he forgot the potion... forgot about it... So that means that he... didn't have the means of fighting Kleestad if it stayed away from shore like it did. Doesn't that mean that he had to make himself useful another way? I guess it means that he had no intention but to rescue Seri, but in no way bring her to bear in the fight itself. Right? We should absolutely get him a bow then, and make sure that he has the means of engaging the enemy from a distance. What about a wand then, like Dandi?" A slightly off tone colors Barael's speech. Mild confusion? Doubt? Worry?

...

Dandi wrote:
"She doesn't speak, not as such. And yet, to hold her is to begin to know her soul. You felt that, didn't you? That is a special thing to share with someone and may require more commitment than is immediately apparent, I suspect."

"I felt... something. Yeah. Perhaps with more time, something might grow, right?" Barael thinks back on his previous attempts to revert to human, and is grateful for the fur at present, as he feels his skin flush.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (19) + 16 = 35

Barael shakes his head. "You see Her, really see Her, don't you? And as Nik spoke on Shadow's Death, you would have Seri's wielder speak on Seri. I understand that now." Barael partially draws his wakizashi.

"Black Tooth is a wonderful blade, cast in cold iron, strengthened against the sunder, treated to strike through bodiless creatures and steeled against the undead. It's been with me, almost from the start." He taps the blade back down.

"Its purpose is my purpose. I direct it as I see fit, and it serves me well. Seri is different, isn't She? The bearer of the blade must understand that to wield Her, is to become Her companion in Her primary purpose. To be dedicated, first and foremost, to Her. That would make the bearer worthy of Her." Barael presses his second paw to Dandi's hand.

Dandi:
"I am not worthy then. To me, Seri is something...um... someone who would help me in my purpose- to protect those I love. In this moment in time, Her and my purpose align, in our aim to fell the Queen, but once that is done, Seri's needs would likely prove secondary to my own. She is not meant for a mantle, once the deed is done. Not a museum, not a collector's library. She would likely consider that an equal hell to Kleestad's tomb."

Barael turns from Dandi, to the group. "If I'm asked to wield Seri against the Queen, know that I will bring all that I've learned, from my Vanish, to the Ghost Stalk, to run her down, and bring her my Ache." Barael grows quiet, smiles at Dandi, and waits to hear what the others speak on the artifact.

He nods as he listens to Charlie make his thoughts known.

@Briar:
Barael frowns, not from anger, but from thinking, from remembering.

"Half his words hurt my head, the other half sound understandable." Barael smiles in amusement at Briar, but the smile quickly disappears, as he realizes that Briar is intent on a genuine answer. He furrows his brow again.

"Aroden has never told me to do anything. I understand that now, a little better. If I thought Aroden wanted me to do something, it's because I wanted to do it. I don't understand his faith anywhere near well enough to know if Desna gave him orders to dodge battle, but he seemed to say that." Barael continues to frown.

"As for gambling, I want nothing to do with it. There's too much at stake to take unnecessary risks. If we need to poke him for counsel, then we need to poke, but he's given it freely enough til now." Barael's face smoothes a little.

"You want my opinion? He saw the end of the tunnel, saw its light, and ran for it, like a man in the desert too long thirsts for water, damn the camels. Scarwall has done a number on each and every one of us."

"Why do you ask?"

...

Barael walks along, changing his orbit around Dandi, trying to avoid getting so close as to hover, but not much farther. He listens to Fondo and Dandi discuss Seri with light interest at first, then deeper intent to pay attention as the conversation continues.

"I... didn't think to ask Her. Well, of course that makes sense, right? Death's Shadow consented to be Nik's partner, so Seri should be given her rightful place amongst us, for however long she remains in our trust." Barael nods to himself, content for the time being.

"Charlie, what do you think? This feels good to discuss, it does. Helps us work on communication. Seri didn't speak to me, so other than Her beautiful ability to make Herself useful to whomever bears Her, I don't see how She wouldn't make any of us stronger. Well, except for you, Charlie. Your pecs are pretty shallow."

It wasn't long after their confrontation when they found him. Barael was with Barkley, slightly in a daze from the Shiver. The doorstep was quiet enough, well off the beaten market paths, but that made little difference. He barely had time to acknowledge the dark forms slipping from the shadows, before they were on him.

He remembers little else but the beating. "Teach you to disrespect us like that... the last thing you'll ever do..." His vision grows fuzzy, but he sees Barkley well enough, climbing the fence. He looks back once, his face a mixture of shame and fear. Then blackness...

"If Desna's Blade I truly am, then fortune follows me and those I love. She guides my blade, and actions too. By sword, by trowel, by rakish wit and guile, as inspiration calls. They've served thus far, and shall be true until the end."

"Aye, mine was a gamble with late payment, and not spoken clearly afore. I understand some of you feel I wagered your lives. For that I'm sorry. For my part, the odds seemed fully in my favor, my hand comprised of the very finest cards." He looks at each of his friends in turn. "Trumps, all of you."

"I'll ever a gambler be. But where we go, what we hope to do and undo... I ought seek your counsel, as you ought seek mine. If we're to succeed, we shall all need to be more transparent in our wiles and stratagems. Thank you, all, for helping me see that."

"Won't be the first time a Woman led you to do something stupid." Barael punches Fondo in the shoulder. "When we're in our Vanish, we only have our voices, so if yours had gone quiet, it would have been difficult locating your body. Trust me on that. It's my one regret when I use it." Barael pads along with the others as they make their way out. "And if we're to be trump cards, then I guess you get to be the Joker for once."

...

Nik wrote:

Barael nods in agreement. "Wise words, Nik. That's why I think you're the one to choose who wields Seri at the final fight. You're the only one without a horse in the race, and you are an expert on swords. Between you and Death's Shadow, I'd trust that decision."

Upon witnessing the sacrifice, Barael moves between Laori and Dandi, holding himself back from drawing Black Tooth. He is relieved when they finally watch her walk away.

Barael slowly lolls his head to the side as he watches Dandi take the sword in hand, and watches as the blade becomes butterfly knife. How fitting. His gaze lingers a little as he hears Briar call to the group.

Briar wrote:
"Before we continue..."

Barael looks from Fondo, back to Briar. "You could... see us in battle, then? Through the Vanish, huh? That's pretty damn impressive, Long-Lived." The description arrives between the Rat's ears shortly thereafter.

Fondo wrote:

Barael's head tilts to the side again. "Moments before, Nik and I were caught dead-to-rights, Fondo. Only by your actions, did we escape. Sure, the gugs were out of the way, but Kleestad..." Barael pauses as he looks at the battle in his head.

"For a moment on the pier, I could have sworn that Kleestad could see me. I would have been in sad shape if Nik's Grand Vanish wasn't enough. I'm glad it was." Barael nods at Nik in appreciation.

"When you found Black Tooth, you called out to me about a consumable to hit the waters with ease. Nik was pretty bloody by that time, but so was Klee. That would have been a grand time to leave Seri sleeping, until we had the mass dead and gone. I know I always feel more comfortable clearing a room, before searching its nooks and crannies." Barael looks to Fondo, questioningly.

Barael nods briskly as Charlie suggests exiting this place, on each and every level of it.

"Fondo, sheathe our new ally, and let's be done with this Tower's intestines." Barael beckons to everyone to head back towards the tunnel's entrance.

He blocks the way, keeping the others back until he can inspect the tunnels.

Barael pads over to Briar, pulling his shortbow off his shoulder. He pulls an arrow from the quiver, and nocks it.

"Long-Lived! You remember our hunts, just outside of Korvosa? We might not have bagged an anklebuckles, but your instruction served me well this fight." Barael pulls back on the bowstring, letting the arrow rest across his finger.

"Point at it, let the arrow loose while keeping the arrow rested. Oohh! And the breath! Steadying it with the pull, that's righteous powerful. I only regret that I hadn't put more training into it. There are some foes that can't be stalked up close and personal." Barael chunks an arrow into the dirt, then pulls it out. 1d2 ⇒ 2 He examines it for damage, and, content, returns it to the quiver.

"Perhaps there's an investment waiting to be made in a new bow."

He turns back to the remaining introductions.

Barael chuckles, as he watches Nikolay and his doomed love triangle. "Dandi, you really should hold Seri. The crafting is beautiful. Maybe it would turn into a scythe for you. And Charlie, you too. You ever swung a blade?"

"Ooooooooo, you are a pretty thing, aren't you?" Barael hesitates. "For a sword, I mean. I mean, even if you weren't a sword, you'd be a thing of wonder, I'm sure." Barael cringes only slightly, and sheathes Black Tooth.

He backs up, and spins Seri in his hand, feeling what power is held in special blades. So you are an artifact, huh? I'm not really sure what that means exactly, but I do understand that you are like no other. He swings a swish or seven, before passing the sword, pommel first, to the next one who would meet their salvation.

"Hello, Seri. My name is Barael. We are very glad to have found you, and will be bearing you out of these depths shortly."

Barael squints his eyes closed. Alright, Seri. Black Tooth is a wakizashi. Yeah, it's a little different, I know, but that's what I like about it. Would you agree to model its form?

Barael feels Dandi pull away. For the briefest moment, he saddens I know... I'm sorry... but his smile quickly returns as he sees her face again, reddened, not repulsed. "Uh, yeah, we've still got to... Yeah. Right," It takes a little will to turn away from one discovery, towards an imminent one.

Barael's face scrunches. Why can't i... "Hey, Brov!!! Why are you still invisible? My grander Vanish from Nik has run its course already. Did you find it yet?" Barael turns to Charlie.

"Care to shed a little light on Fondo, so we can keep an eye on him?"

Barael's eyes widen at first, then slowly squint with upturned corners, as a very dopey look crosses his face, and remains there for the duration of the hug.

"I think...sigh... he's of a mind that if one sword was buried, so was another. hmmm He's gonna finish searching, I believe."

The very tip of Barael's tail raises from the ground, and twitches, in stark contrast with his frame, which apparently is trying to cradle glass.

"Yes, I'm here, and alive, as are you... and we all. And it's more than ok, it's bloody brilliant news." Barael lets the deep chuckle come to the fore with no reservations.

Barael's ears perk up when he hears Dandi call out. No sooner said than in motion, Barael leaves his seat on the island to join Dandi on the other side of the water. He only glances down once as he briefly imagines a giant, rending hand reaching up from the depths to pull him under.

"Here, I'm here." Barael shakes his left leg, then his right, as he clears the water from his soles. "Fondo's over on that island. Found my sword and all, thanks to you and your eyes." Barael smiles gratefully, and notes more shaking. He places a paw on her back, and soothes.

Barael watches as Nik brings the full might of Shadow's Death against Kleestad. As the monster falls beneath the waves, Barael falls to his knees, suddenly aware of the weakness forming in his legs. He begins to breathe deeply, wiping away the wet at the corner of his eyes.

His pupils start to constrict, improving his depth of focus, which allows him to take in the whole of the picture. Out of the corner of his vision, he sees the swarm of wasps dissipate around Dandi. He calms himself, supressing the desire to inspect her for injury. She's not injured. She conjured them, controlled them. They protected her, they did. And for that, they have my gratitude.

From his kneeling position, Barael calls to Charlie. "Ay! Is Nik alright then? He was twitching like nothing I've seen before!" Barael changes his tone to something more gruff. "Ay, Nik!! Well done, you pitbull! Had Klee around the neck, and never let go!" Barael raises his fist to the Sward, his hand still shaking with adrenaline.

Barael tucks away his shortbow, and looks around. Fondo. He called out. Had my blade and something... As his ears hone in on Brov, and his position out across the water, he nods slowly, and starts to stand. As he gains his strength back, he dusts the dirt off his knees, steadies his breath, and proceeds to run across the surface of the water to join Fondo.

"Black Tooth? You found it? That is grand! Thank you, Brov." He takes his wakizashi, and spends a little time with some water and a scarf removing the dug-in dirt. "You alright, then? The Vanish stuck with you throughout, huh? Nik's got the touch, he does." Barael sits down on the edge of the water, and watches the others from afar, listening to Fondo dig at the dirt.

Barael watches Briar as he prepares his magics. When he starts to talk aloud, Barael looks around briefly, but doesn't dwell on it overly long when he fails to see to what Briar speaks. The wonders I've seen, no doubt...

Barael coils back on his tail, getting anxious to bring what he can to the fight. Bow or blade? Blade or bow? Equally strong weapons, under the right circumstances. In the right hands, they can be quite deadly.

Barael boggles. "The only thing left out there worth burying is Black Tooth. He buried my sword. That wormy bastard up and buried my sword." Barael finishes boggling.

"You didn't happen see my blade left perfectly alone, didja?" Barael plucks a quick rhythm on the shortbow, trying to picture himself in action with it.

"If the sword is calling out to you, why didn't it tell you about the danger, eh? You haven't even laid eyes on it, that's true enough." Barael leans back on his tail.

"The last time Nik and I jumped into the water against a reefclaw, we were almost done in. That thing out there... how do you propose to fight it? I can attack it from a distance just as much as from up on the waters, where I'm likely to get drug in. If I were rested, I could reclaim my Vanish, and hold it for a volley of arrows."

Barael belts on the holy weapon, but produces his shortbow, and counts his arrows briefly.

"Did you remember anything said by Zellara to watch out for a gods-be-damned giant worm-man?! I don't remember anything said about it, not even a hint of it. We were proper tired, sure, but my mind was ready only for retrieving a weapon insulated from the world. Not another fight. Scarwall apparently seeks to keep what it has, to the last."

"And I don't remember seeing any sword, did you? Are you thinking the blade likes floating in the bile of that beast?"

"I have no energy. We should rest. I feel like I'll be more effective if it can't stave off my Ache. I see no way of effectively flanking that rotting bloat of a belch. It has the ability to return to its depths as it pleases. If we can retreat to this safety, it must have its." Barael wags a finger.

"And that hole. More gugs. We can't have more of those interrupting our attack. We got lucky that gug got guzzled instead of Charlie."

Barael takes to his feet. "If we needs must return to strike the creature down, I would know more of our strategy. Can it simply keep to the water and spray us down, over and over again?" Barael shudders.

Barael waits at the pit's edge, backing off a little from his gazing, when he turns to Dandi, herself intent on seeing through the mists. The blue light intensifies the blue of her eyes, and Barael finds himself staring past her locks of hair. She's really... focused. The way her eyes dart for a parting in the mist, each time hoping that she'll detect them. It's like anyone watching her isn't there. Focused. I could probably call her name several times, and she'd not lose that focus. As she gets older, I'll bet she never loses that.

@ Dandi:
"Uh... yeah. Those are all things you are capable of, isn't it? Sometimes... I forget. It's just that... if she were going to betray us, why not when the sword is there for the taking, and you have an ally that looks like that. Our work is far from done here, I'm afraid. Sorry. Turning to the others as everyone prepares to descend and re-enter the church, Barael catches the elf's stare.

Yeah, yeah. She's an angel. Pure as the driven snow. I'll make a public apology at your wedding.

Laori, not being completely stupid, probably knows that we're still out here...and, I don't know if you've noticed, this place is pretty tight. It's going to be difficult for her to escape with the sword...even if that was her goal. Her goal is the crown, like us. And we are still her best avenue towards that, I think.
