Backstory:

Balan was born the son of a slave in the Jalmeri city of Prada Hanam, and grew up sweeping the city streets. As a boy, Balan was the leader of a group of slave boys who would play and wrestle together. When one of the other boys stumbled into a young nobleman's procession, the noble boy personally thrashed the slave, leaving him unconscious. Balan, unable to restrain himself, ran out into the street and beat the young nobleman in return.

As punishment, the nobleman's father had Balan publicly beaten, and exiled him and his mother, leaving them to fend for themselves in the wilds of Jalmeray. It was only the intervention of a passing monk on a journey of enlightenment that saved the young man and his mother from being eaten by wild dogs. Seeing a purpose in their meeting, and impressed with the young man, the monk invited Balan to come and train at the Monastery of Unflinching Resolve outside Niswan.

For the next 10 years, Balan lived and trained at the monastery, developing not only his body and his mind, but his love and gratitude for the monks who saved him and his family. When the time for his journey of enlightenment came, Balan chose to travel to the city of Katapesh, to help spread the religion of the Master of Masters

After arriving in the city of Katapesh, Balan chose to join a caravan travelling to the ruins of Kelmarane as a representative of Irori's church, with the blessing of the head priest. Since the reclaiming of the city, his mother has joined him in the village.

Description and Personality:

Description
Balan is a specimen of physical strength, with rippling muscles clearly visible beneath his chocolate-brown skin. He normally keeps his head shaven as a tribute to Irori, and wears a simple tunic and pants. His face rarely departs from its usual smiles and meditative expressions.

Personality
Having learned to control his temper, Balan attempts to always be calm and collected, though he isn't always successful. He has a deep dislike for slavery, and has lost his composure more than once when seeing a slave beaten. Though Balan doesn't judge extravagance much in others, he refrains from it himself, living in a form of strong minimalism, keeping little other than necessities. He advocates strongly for protecting and nurturing the weak, developing discipline in the quest for self-improvement, and working with others to find enlightenment.

Quirks and Flaws:

-As mentioned in his Personality section, he has a dislike of slavery not far off from hatred, and particularly objects to the beating and misuse of slaves.
-Balan is not great with money, not caring for it beyond seeing it as a necessary part of civilized life.
-Though very proficient in the martial arts, Balan doesn't have a ear for rhythm, and his dancing suffers greatly as a result
-He has a low tolerance for spicy food
