Background:

Badger Background

When you are small, everything seems scary. When you are a gnome, you are raised in a world of fear.

There is fear of the elements. Fear of the large predators in the woods. Fear of the deep forest with the tall trees. You often grow up feeling you are the rabbits of creation.

Wherever you turn there is something that will hunt you and kill you if they find you.

Gnomish villages are built around fear of being found and keeping that secret is the most important thing. Better the life of one Gnome to be sacrificed then a whole village lost.

Even groups that call themselves allies like Elves and Humans need to be treated with suspicion because they tend to blab secrets and never nearby when needed.

It was into this society that Badger was born. A society that ennobled the idea of fear.

There were some Gnomes that took up the call to be warriors for the village but they took the calling as a sacrificial act. They expected to one day give their lives leading an enemy away from the village like a mother bird leads predators away from the nest.

Badger was different. He didn’t except that he was born to be scared. He grew up feeling that it was the monsters that should fear him.

His parents were worried. His grandparents pulled out books to research his ancestry. They all concluded that he was very un-Gnomish. It wasn’t till they realized that his Great Great Uncle was a third cousin of a dwarf that they figured they had found the answer. They were wrong.

Badger was just different and he wasn’t the only Gnome that was like him.

While many of the Gnomish warriors lived to one day ‘Make the Grand Sacrifice’ there were a few Gnomish warriors that lived to become a monster slayer. It usually started as a calling when the warrior fought lesser enemies like Kobolds and Goblins. They found a love for the hunt. They found a love for making those that torment the lives of Gnomes run in terror.

They were loners if they lived in the village but more often they lived beyond the limits of the village. They were silent defenders watching over their fellow Gnomes homes and striking often before the Gnomes even knew they were in danger.

It was Badger’s lack of ‘sensible’ fear, as his Great Grandparents would say, that led him deeper into the woods away from the village then was ‘normal’. This distance away from the village was the result of Badger doing some hunting for small Gnomish style game. He unfortunately, found himself the prey of a pack of coyotes. Badger took to a tree and started to slowly take shots at them from the branches with his sling.

It only took a couple of good shots to bring down a couple of the coyotes. The coyotes with an alternative choice of food, decided to leave him alone.

While this occurred, Badger’s mentor watched from the shadows.

When it came time for the time of ‘Serving’ when older Gnomes make their call to younger Gnomes to come and spend a year working in a trade while the young Gnomes decide what will become their apprenticeship, Badger’s mentor called him to serve.

The mentor worked to train Badger and show him more creatures of the woods and see how the young Gnome reacted.

More and more, he realized that Badger was a natural hunter. More importantly, Badger, had the nature to not hunt just creatures of the woods but the monsters that hunt Gnomes.

Badger at the time of ‘Choosing’ having had five servings of different masters chose his Mentor. He chose to learn the way of the Monster Slayer. Learning to trust in the Forest Lord and make the monsters learn to fear the woods and its guardians.

Badger hopes to recruit more Gnomes to become Monster Slayers and to one day achieve the greatness of a Dragon Slayer. For now, he continues to get training and test himself against the dangers of the wood and world.
