Hey Fabian,
I'd been keeping an eye on the dates, and had been getting a bad feeling.
Thanks for being straight about it.
I've enjoyed this format - I think you were right about it giving a more cohesive story. It is certainly faster! Looks like it is a lot of extra work though, and I can understand if you need to step away.
Best of luck
Azghaad

Understood - do what you have to do.
I echo Amenon in hoping we can restart when you come back.

Azghaad looked around furiously, hand raised to strike. Though his knowledge of Haunts was limited, he remembered certain things.
"It's a haunt! Doesn't affect undead! There may be ghouls waiting for us to split up! Stay together!"

If this is beyond Azghaad's knowledge, please remove it. Probably just my paranoia kicking in...

will: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
would like to make a knowledge roll if possible, please :)
Azghaad started at the noise. His hand dropped to his component pouch, and his eyes closed - looking on letters writ in fire seemingly engraved in his mind. A second later the nature of the words penetrated, and he paused.

Action 2
Still nervous that something might be using this distraction to attack, Azghaad scanned the nearby gates carefully, ready to blast anyone if necessary.
Ready action to cast magic missile

Azghaad paused at Rubani's words "I take your point. 'The mind should rule the heart'." he quoted, then reached down and pulled his robe up to his knee. His right leg was a mass of long-healed burn scars. "But do not underestimate how dangerous they are. [i]'Fire is everyone's ally, and no-one's friend'[i]" he finishes, quoting once more.

Azghaad drew himself up momentarily, then sagged.
"I suppose I do. If they'd waited. If I'd just worked it out sooner... We would have been warned. We could have taken precautions. It just looked like dust, you see. And the fire..."
He paused and stared off into the distance, a troubled look on his face.
"I think we should have a new rule. No Alchemist's fire. It's just too dangerous. Anything happens to shatter a vial, and.. and it just explodes into flame. I didn't say anything before, when I was new, and they've been helpful, I suppose... but all it would take is someone falling down a staircase... Or another fireball, setting off his vials like some chain reaction."
"No, I feel strongly about this. No more. I'll pay people for any they've got, and we can detonate them safely outside."
No, sounds great :) Might go a little sideways though.

Azghaad smiled as they approached the new site. This lottery might bother his friends, but it suits me well. Each new site is a prize, to be explored for knowledge. In good spirits he luxuriated in the warm light of the sun on his face. All too soon it will be time to go into the dark. He frowned a little, as he placed the memory - one of the last words his Sarenraean companion had said.

More soberly now, Azghaad pulled out a piece of chalk and a slate with etched lines. Carefully he started to pace out the exterior dimensions of the walls, and when Shalina started to call out additional information he hurried to mark them down as well. Skimp on study, fail the final he reminded himself as he fought his urge to push forward. "I don't suppose you have the gift of the third eye?" he called plaintively "I would be fascinated to know if you can detect any auras from up there."

As soon as he noticed Rubani had slipped through the gate he followed. "Careful! Remember, better to investigate first than..." Azghaad trailed off. Rubani is just as keen as I am to go in, but he didn't blunder at "The mill." he added weakly, and to himself.

Sorry guys, not very good, but I am trying. Not casting Mage Armour yet.

RE: Wound thresholds. Feel free to ignore this, but you probably want to put a penalty for spells in there as well. Arguably concentration does it. I'd suggest decreasing DC. Most spells either have a hit roll, a save, or are harmless. I'd prefer not to be in a situation where Rubani is unable to cast Cure Light Wounds when we're injured.

RE: Scaling items. My understanding is that these are handed out by STs, and just 'use up' a percentage of WBL. As Azghaad has the feats to upgrade items anyway, might not be worth giving it to him... unless there's a scaling construct...

With Azghzaad's sudden apology, Rurdem found himself somewhat annoyed, I see how this one works, if ya don' cast spells ya arn' worth as much in his eyes. He gave the man a look of slight disdain as he said, "Aye dunna see how my magic or lack there of matters but yer righ' those like me are very rare among mah kin'. Hell, tha only reason I have i' is cause me great-great-great granddam was a copper wyrm, runs in mah family, every firstborn male."

Azghaad forced a smile at the nameless stranger. Damn. Naturally Gifted, just given power and they don't even appreciate it. "Well, sir, as a priest of Nethys it matters a great deal to me. Your draconic forebear has granted you not just power, but the ability to manipulate the universe, and the opportunity to unlock its secrets."

desperately trying to get the rest written, but circumstances are conspiring. Didn't want to miss out comepletely. Will try and get the rest in tomorrow. Sorry :(

Azghaad looked stricken, and his attitude changed immediately when he learned the dwarf was Gifted. "I am very sorry. I didn't see a component pouch, and the intrinsically gifted are so rare amongst dwarves I didn't even consider it as a possibility. Of course you should join us - Rubani can tell you our company's rules, if you're interested."

I'd like to try to work the two new players strongly into whatever actions we take, given it's their first real 'team scene'.
RE Rurdem: I was assuming we'd get an acerbic 'I'm a caster' and 'I already took care of the bodies', thereby highlighting his capability without requiring bragging.
RE Unchained wound penalties: I'm torn. Realistically it makes a great deal of sense. Cinematically it is often when the heroes are beaten down that they turn around and perform the best. I guess it depends on the mood you are going for.
RE Unchained scaling items and automatic bonus progression: I actually think these are great... but I made an item crafter (I'm going for Arclord of Nex, the most craftery prestige class of crafting, for when crafting wizards aren't crafty enough) If we do do it, I'd like to do a pretty serious rebuild away from that.

I've got a potential in, but it involves Azghaad being rude. Again. I'm a little worried about that.
I'll post it, but I'm happy to lose it if it's too much.

Azghaad sighed at the interruption. It was not so much the yelling, it was that it was yelling about dead bodies. He looked at Rubani, sighed again, and headed towards the noise. ANOTHER delay he complained internally, then felt his face heat Have I truly become so callous to death that hearing about some poor man losing his entire team just makes me regret a lost hour?
"Excuse me? Officers? I've been told by a priest of Pharasmin that tomb r...explorers should be buried wherever possible. If these bodies are still within the tomb, then good Pharasmins have a duty to see them buried. While I am no good Pharasmin, my team is and I am sure will be happy to assist in recovering the bodies with this poor dwarf."
He turned to Rurdem "Sadly, I must agree with the captain. I lost an entire team to my first site. I know of another team all but lost a day ago. Regardless of your skill with an axe, it is simply too dangerous for the ungifted to enter alone. The rule is for your own good."

Nice. Dwarven Sorcerers can take a favoured class bonus that gives them a little extra damage on acid spells. Could be useful.

Is there any movement on someone to replace Akhmose?
@Akhmose: if you're still lurking man, sorry to see you go :/

Actions 2
"The trouble is" sighed Azghaad as he shook his head mournfully "you'd obviously go in by yourself to get it if we let you, and then the 'saving you and all' would have been wasted!" He looked to Rubani "Still, he shows wisdom in seeking help this time. It would allow him to pay back the costs we incurred saving him, and perhaps we could give his comrades a burial before they become something's dinner." In a much quieter tone he adds to Rubani "It's like taking in a stray. Once you rescue it, you have a duty to keep it alive."

Man, Azghaad's a jerk! I wonder if Sheerakh is going to stab him at some point?

Azghaad took the proffered hand and rose to his feet.

"Don't blame him for it being so one-sided. I intended this to be more of a sparring match than a... " he smiles weakly as he trails off "I used to be quite the brawler back in my pre-apprentice days. I had thought my wards might make up for any discrepancy, make it a fair fight. Apparently in my youth I was a big fish in a very small pond." He still leaned on the big man, as he continued "Amenon here saw me use a magical ward, and could see I was confident. He reasonably assumed I knew what I was doing, and that I had cast something sufficiently powerful to mean he'd need to use everything he had."

He grimaces a little "I stand by the decision to test his combat skills before there were lives on the line. This was a non-lethal chance to do so in a place where there was immediate healing and no danger. I am now confident he'll be an asset to the group, and if we give him a big weapon there'll be someone else to smash the giant stone construct we seem fated to fight. I'm happy to take a smaller share of the treasure if there's a large chance of coming home with it."

"He's obviously capable of working with delicate items given his work as a porter. I suspect he was merely working himself up for the fight, and bears me no ill-will" - he looked at Amenon "Yes?"

"Rubani here has simplified our code somewhat. We respect the dead, help the living, kill the undead, preserve the past as best we can, and record what we can't. While we have all agreed to that, there are times we have argued over the exact priority of those principles."

for the record, Azghaad primarily grew up around halflings and a smattering of humans, and has exceptional physical stats for a wizard.

damn past tense! Here, rewritten

Azghaad's spell flared - and failed - in the wake of Amenon's mighty blow. His feet left the ground from the force of the blow, and he moved a few feet through the air, landing awkwardly as he sunk to his knees and left hand. He dry retched a few times as his stomach - already sensitive from a night of hard drinking - desperately tried to empty itself, while already empty.

He gasped for a air a few times, trying to talk through the pain, then held up a hand while he struggled to regain his breath, until he finally stumbled to his feet.

"I am a Funereal thief... I steal from the dead... I am at peace with that... Not worried you would run... worried you wouldn't when you should." he coughed a few times through his speech and fumbled for his waterskin "So, you can fight. We need that. You'll have my vote." he took another sip, and slowly regained his composure, though still shaky and weak. "Last night we went back in to rescue another group. Perhaps you should see what remains of them - then you'll see why I asked."

Should I alter my post to put it later in the day?

huh - I sort of figures sparring was a courtyard activity, but admittedly that is based on 300. If it is impolite, then Azghaad would move elsewhere. There must be somewhere in a large house for training and sparring - my vote is the Courtyard.

Assuming he is not simply unconcious...

You think I am a funeral thief? Or worse, you think I am a coward who will run at the first sign of the restless undead?”

Actions 1
Azghaad idly trails Akhmose, perking up when Namrut speaks up for the porter.

"Hang on, Akhmose."
Turning to the young man he nods slightly
"A good family is an asset without price. A strong back is very helpful. Shalina already has a keen eye, and Namrut a mind trained in the business. How are you in a fight?" He stops, then quickly resumes "Are you one of the Gifted? I can see no signs, but I understand such are often persecuted here. Forgive me if it is so."

"I have seen so much blood in the last few days. I had heard romantic tales of traps and crypt-monsters. I imagined myself burning down some half-rotted guardian and unconvering a stone tablet written by Azghaad himself. The reality is not so poetic. It is blood, and dirt, and death. Vermin, traps, undead monsters and the constant stink of smoke from the burned and burning. Even the treasures - like the ancient construct killing machines - will try and kill you."

"Make no mistake, there's enough treasure in most of these crypts to let you retire. But the lifespan of tomb robbers is measured in hours. I will not lead another soul to their death, even some poor prosaic, for the hope the gold might leave you wealthy."

Azghaad casts some spell upon himself casting Mage Armour
, and sets himself in a defensive posture "if you would have my vote, then show me you can defend yourself. Hit me..."
Tag Amenon! If you can take him out he'll vote for you, otherwise he keeps rabbiting on "and show that you have the skill to go with the strength you so obviously have - or show that you have no place in the ruins of Wati." Honestly by this point I would want to punch Azghaad, and here's an opportunity to do it consequence free. If you want to let him keep talking for a while, that's fine too.
If you want to show off your reasonableness, on the other hand, I guess that could work as well.

Actions 2
"I don't mean to sound callous - but do ghouls share the prodigious strength of zombies? It might be wise for us to restrain those so obviously affected. Last thing we want is someone turning unexpectedly, breaking loose and rampaging through Namrut's house."
Though he is careful not to mention names, his eyes stay fixed on Sheerakh.

Rubani Madu wrote:

I have deducted 150 gp from Rubani for 3 vials of antiplague.

I for one am happy for that to come out of the 'extra share' we were keeping for expenses. If there's no money in it, then it should pay you back.

If we lose Naomi, then we should probably do something complicated with the treasury to deduct her 'share'.

Amenon: Sorry if Az seems awful. He is prejudiced against those without magical power. He's also worried about losing more team-mates and hungover - it's a bad time to meet him.

Quote:
Almost at the same time that Rubani and Shalina came back with Akhmose, a very haggard looking wizard appeared at Namrut’s door. He moved slower than usual and the dark shadows under his eyes told a ‘rough night’.

Action 1 - I am guessing the snake is with Az's retainers? How much did he lose at the pub last night?

The young Garundi man squinted painfully in the bright of the desert morning sun, his noble's robes now also encompassing a large hood that shaded his face. "How." he asked with finality "Are you so gods-damned chirpy this morning Akhmose? Is it Alchemy? Gods... I hope it's Alchemy. Whatever it is, tell me you can repeat it. Oh... I need coffee. Real coffee."

He looked over the young man waiting in the courtyard "Who's this?" he asks Akhmose, rudely ignoring the young man.

Action 2
Azghaad trails in after Rubani
"No! Not after all we went through! What do we do, Rubani!?"

Hey Fabian: I guess Azghaad is not putting anything to the crowd, just sowing seeds. I hope I've the timing right - Azghaad would be arriving about now?, or already arrived?

there is also the spell diagnose disease. If we can get someone to cast that then at least we'll have some certainty.

"Well, I need to go to the pub and see a man about a snake. It's not fair to leave them holding a construct worth more than a craftsman will make in a decade - or worrying about what happened."

Azghaad will head to the pub - Sheerakh is welcome to come with him, but I assume everyone else (who may have the fever) is on the way to the cleric. He'll stop by 'home' and have a few of his retainers accompany him.

Azghaad walked into the Tooth and Hookah. Pausing just inside the doorway, as was his custom, he identified the various groups, then walked over to the bar.

"It is a custom" he announced to the bar, loudly, "Among warriors, to drink a glass and toast the name of fallen comrades."

"Gather round, my fellow tomb robbers. We have a lot of work to do."

He counts carefully the number of tomb robbers still present, and works out how many drinks he'll need. It's a lot of drinks he reflected sadly.

not sure what the toasting drink of choice is. Ancient Egyptians drank primarily beer and wine. Port, maybe? Shots would be good.

Okay - missing a lot of names here.
DAY 2?
Azghaad lost 4 members on his first day. One was Tissle the halfling. A scholar-Arcanist, a cleric of Sarenrae and two Alchemists. I don't think the others had names yet...
A rogue died in one of the other groups - to a ghoul.
Day 3?
3 Sand Scorpions (Black Kiss, a rogue and the magus). Two were paralysed earlier, but I think they were okay.
so 8?
If the halflings want to count their two dead dogs, Azghaad would be okay with that.

Azghaad lines up the 8 drinks and starts calling the names of the dead. He does his best to say something positive about all of them - hoping the others will fill in for those he doesn't know. He starts to slur a little at the end, and turn a little maudlin.

"I'd heard ours was a dangerous profession, but it seems like half the people in that square with us are dead or retired already. I think it's getting worse. The ghouls weren't trying to kill Sheerakh, I think they were trying to turn him."

He shakes his head
"The guard didn't care about the Sand Scorpions. Just wanted to keep us out. Hardly a surprise - does anyone think the Pharasmins are going to care about tomb robbers? And most of us are outsiders anyway."

"The Sand Scorpions cared more about protecting their site than their lives - their souls! Doesn't matter how rich you are when you're dead."

"All too clear to me - if we don't want to end up another set of names, we need to watch out for each other. After all, we're the only ones who care."

Would everyone have left the tavern by now? I believe we have to pick up the snake.
I'd also like to propose some arrangements to help out with the other teams. Good to do that tonight, still covered in blood and ash, but could do tomorrow night, I guess.
(A) everyone turns up to the tavern an hour before sunset
(B) we try to rescue people who haven't turned up
(C) everyone shares where they are, and what dangers they found
(D) anyone stealing from a group runs into all of us

Azghaad remains focussed on getting Naomi out. He would ask someone to grab her weapons as he leaves. Though he'd like his staff, he'll leave it to burn if it means leaving Naomi alone

If someone mentions the difficulty of going to the temple with bites
"By the Abyss... If your code means you have to turn yourself in, why did we even come! We could always simply keep it quiet for now, then claim we were attacked when we headed to our new site tomorrow morning! But - your church is hardly the only one. A cleric of Nethys is unlikely to even care, though they will be more expensive. I'm sure we could find an alchemist-chirurgeon who might have some idea as well."
"I'm willing to trade what we've got for cures. Naomi's life - all of your lives - are worth more to me than gold."

Hey,

is it possible to get a clarification on the state of the fire? Did stuff catch? Is there a wall of fire between Sheerakh and us? Are we in danger of the supports burning out and the 'roof' falling on us? Is there a pillar of fire about to burst into the sky and call forth the guard (and more ghouls, perhaps)?
Since Azghaad went late in initiative, I had him move away and the fire wasn't as extensive as it could have been. But you can assume that some things are on fire (and it's smoking quite a bit in the basement) but there's no immediate and great danger of any explosion or anything like that.

Thank you :)

"Naomi!" yelled Azghaad, running forward, dropping his staff and lifting the little cleric carefully in his arms. He racked his mind for something that might make the difference... he had never studied healing - mundane or magical - but his companions had. "Rubani! Akhmose! Help!"
Actions 1: Pick up Naomi (who I am assuming will be healed) and get her upstairs to safety. No, Azghaad doesn't care about saving the goods down here at the moment, and is ignoring the corpses and prisoner for the moment.
Actions 2: continue to carry Naomi, guard her upstairs.

caveat: it is possible she'll be so healed that Naomi can walk, in which case...
Sheepishly Azghaad put Naomi down, regretting his panic. He stooped to grab his staff, and passed the Scythe to the pharasmin as well.

Hey, everyone is staying back :)
Round 2
Azghaad, prepared spells exhausted, draws deep upon his connection to the plane of fire, letting raw primal energy spill from his hands, unrestrained by arcane boundaries. The fire seemed almost to
Move: to get at least 5 ft. Standard: fire jet. Swift: Surround self in fire (if there is a fire to draw on)!

passess fort:

Azghaad felt his stomach clench as the stench hit him like a blow. Desperately he tried to retch - but thankfully the trip through a sewer had already relieved him of anything resembling food.
Taking a deep breath he resolved to kill these things, and head back to sweeter air before he breathed again.

fails fort:

Azghaad was moving when the stench hit him. Desperately he stopped breathing, his lungs half full. His eyes stung, as if acid was brewing nearby. His head started to swim as he realised he had only seconds before he started to pass out, and resolved to use his time well.

Azghaad skipped to the side of his group and used a precious puff of air to conjure up Fire. "Throw the Naptha then Run!" he shouted quickly, backing away a little as wave after wave of fire poured from his hands into the room.
Move to side, but only as much as he has to (he wants to run away). Cast Burning Hands. Should be able to get two of the enemy, I think. He'll burn anything but a party member without thought, at the moment. That includes the bodies and the victim. If there's a chance to set something on fire as well, he'll do that. The more fire in here, the better.

Damnit. Sorry guys, used the wrong alias because I was in a hurry :(

Actions 1
try to know about ghouls. Currently has temporary hp
Azghaad stood, his heart pounding. It was always like that when he unleashed evocations of such strength. It never lasted long, but for now he felt stronger, tougher, faster - an almost addictive feeling.
He rejoiced internally that the ghouls had been so easily defeated, when he saw Rubani's horror struck face and traced it's path to Naomi's bite.

Desperately he racked his mind for all he knew of ghouls. It had seemed such an irrelevant subject when he was studying. Those who commanded the undead seldom tolerated such free will, and those who sought immortality preferred vampirism and lichdom. There was something about a bite...

Actions 2
"It could be a trick!" he warned, hands up and ready to throw more fire as he proceeded toward the sound anyway.

Naomi: going to miss you Naomi. Hope things straighten out for you.
And Fabian: very not fun :( I hope that job is done for now.

Round 1
The Magus was dead. The poor prose probably never had a chance.
Azghaad's stomach twisted as he stood in the dark, surrounded by death, and stank - literally - of a sewer.
Then the shriek sounded, and anger fought fear - and won.
"Burn!" he shrieked.
Fire was something Azghaad had learned to carefully control. Here he lost that control. Fire spilled from his upraised hand, washing over the ghouls with no concerns for the surrounding building. On and on the flame washed over the undead.
Cast Burning Hands. Do not burn friends, but otherwise okay

Round 2
back up 5 ft if attacked. Casting Burning Hands again - though have flavoured as continuous.
Hand still upraised, the flames continued to pour from Azghaad over the dead and undead alike.

Sure Fabian, no problem. Let's go with the flashback then?

stealth: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

Azghaad trailed along silently - well, as silently as he knew how.
An old sewer. he reassured himself Probably not been used for decades - centuries, even

Then the smell hit him.

Desperately he searches his mind, hoping for some spell that might keep the filth from his clothes. It was not one he had ever needed, till now. After a few moments paused he sighed, and cast the closest spell he knew.
using Arcane Bond to cast Mage Armour
If it can keep away arrows, maybe it can keep away this too... he thought forlornly, his clothing twisting into a copy of Shalina's.

Action 2 is to trail Shalina... Azghaad's very withdrawn at the moment

I will think no less of you if you choose not to go. You owe these people nothing, and you have already proven yourself a man of character. Were you to strike a camel I would not hesitate to join you, because any fight Azghaad Glyphstele starts has to be a justified one. You're a good man. But I'm afraid I have to go."

Azghaad reflected, as they crept under the shadow of darkness into the undead-haunted night-dark necropolis, just how much he tried to convince Rubani against this action and how much he SHOULD have tried to convince him. His guilt and friendship had connived to undermine his determination. Should Rubani have gone, and not come back, Azghaad knew his guilt would never have subsided.

Fine to go. I was thinking about trying to get some of the pub NPCs to come with us though. Is that still possible? Is it something you are okay with, Fabian?
I figured on asking the Dog Soldiers to come (we've agreed to work together). Bribing the Crpytfinders, maybe.
I had considered offering Azaz's group the Serpent as a bribe

Oh, same spell list as for day 3 is fine by me

Azghaad minded the cage while Shalina talked to the barkeep. The job wasn't hard, though he did have to drag it back to the centre of the table when the repeated buttings from inside moved the cage a little.

He was distracted enough that he had not followed the conversation - until Akhmose rose. Quickly running over his memory he held up a hand.

"Admirable, friend. But to assault the Necropolis at night? What if they were simply late returning? And I doubt they'll be happy at anyone 'raiding'" the sarcasm is obvious "their site. We could go first thing in the morning. If they're trapped, we can rescue them."

Guilt crept into Azghaad's voice towards the end, as he remembered the team he lost to the sand that first day.

It's different he assured himself not just because they're prose

Fabian Benavente wrote:
The young wizard nodded but didn't correspond in the outspoken greeting. "I am Azaz of Osirion, an eternal seeker of knowledge. How's your hunt going?"

"Terribly." Azghaad looked sadly at the ground and shook his head "This is a rough business. My entire team died my first day out - except me, obviously. Three of the Grave Guard quit on the first day, and I joined them. We nearly died twice - no, three times - in our first day alone. The treasure I hoped to find was a little disappointing as well. Primarily all we've found is some simple notes - oh and some gold, and oils and things like that. There was a few fascinating constructs, but we primarily had to destroy or abandon them. It is not the walls carved with historic accounts I had hoped for."

"How goes your hunt?"

Actions 2
I lost my first team because we weren't cautious enough with a new site. That's not happening again! thought Azghaad.

"Nice to see that there's no digging, but based on these doors, I'd say someone has been here before us. Hmmm - nice doors. Bronze isn't cheap. Suggests they paid a fair bit for security, or possibly for the look." The Wizard adds this last as he takes a careful look at the doors, scratching with his dagger.
"Akhmose, forgive the stereotyping, but could you take a look at these doors? They look impressive, but is it a facade, or genuinely secure doors? Shalina? You've experience with" he coughs "Practical security systems. What are your thoughts?"
Tag Shalina
Tag Akhmose

Trying to work out the difficulty level we might be facing. I'm assuming doors are barely worth dragging back for selling even if pure bronze. At best they'd be worth about as much as copper, I assume. A fortune for some poor labourer, barely worth our while.
I'm curious also as to whether the doors could be easily rehung so we could have some additional security while working.

"Now, I'm assuming the guards don't go through the doors. That means there could well be something inside here. Tall walls mean shade from the sun, except at noon. There's numerous vermin that might use that."
"Naomi, Rubani, if you'll walk with me I think it would be worth walking the perimeter and trying to see - with my third eye - over the wall. Hopefully if the two of you could lift me I could peer over. Unless Shalina wants to be part of it? I suppose we could try walking around on top of the wall and peering in at the top floor." There's doubt in Azghaad's voice.
Tag Rubani

Hmmm - stylistically I tend to do each sentence as a paragraph on PbP. I've noted that in the recap it tends to look a little disjointed though - especially with the start of the paragraph indented.
Fabian: what do you want to do about it? I can try to write longer paragraphs if that will help.

Actions 1: the Tooth and Hookah
Assuming Shalina is carrying the snake as she is the hero of that story :)

Azghaad entered the tavern a trifle cautiously. After so nearly coming to blows with the Sand Scorpions last night, He had decided that some caution was appropriate.

Looking around the tavern he noted the prose-dominated gang was absent. He smirked in victory - until the reason for the argument occurred to him. They had been afraid of the ghouls. Yes, they had tried to poach a priest, and yes they had been rude... but had they fallen, victims to their own arrogance?

Guilt crept over his face. He realised he would not be annoyed to see them turn up, simply late.

This is going to haunt me all night, if I don't do something about it.
"Shalina. Do you know anyone who would know what happened to the Sand Scorpions?"

...
Azghaad adjusted his clothes to a more formal black and white motif, and strode over to his fellow wizard.

Fabian:

I figure Nethian clerics probably have some way of measuring their abilities for status purposes. While I think high-powered mages probably are more polite than this normally, I also expect introductions are meant to be done quickly and succinctly.
I'm using "Master of the First Circle" to imply he can cast first level spells. Feel free to make something up or tell me I'm crazy if you like. I'll follow your lead :)

"Hail Nethys!" he greeted, dragging a chair over and sitting down - heedless of the other fellow's feelings. "I am Azghaad Glyphstele of the Ghostgrove Temple of Nethys. I am a Priest of Nethys, Scholar, Master of the First Circle, and Fire Mage. I am the wizard of the all-gifted exploration team 'The Grave Guard'."
All gifted might be stretching it, but Akhmose is gifted even if also unpractised. Need to make a strong introduction if I want to assert my independence.

LOOT
Azghaad is happy for things to be sold. He is interested in getting Tanglefoot bags for situations where delicate items are near combative enemies. He'd be prepared to spend his own cash on getting two bags for himself, but would like the group to consider maybe getting one for everyone.
if just him, then he'll buy them from (in order) The family of the dead alchemist in his first team, or Boram. He would be prepared to wait, but no more than a day or two. In either case he'll pay 110% (deliberately losing the bartering). If he has to go to a normal merchant he'll barter as well as he can.

Quote:
“Is anyone willing to come with me to help uncle down the shaft so that he can see Akhentepi’s tomb? I doubt that I can manage helping him down and hauling him up on my own…and he will require some help.”

"I'd be happy to. I have a spell that should make the going down part safer. Though I'd use the rope anyway."

"Wati is just as dangerous as ever - I think you are wise to have company in case the desert vermin attack again."

Quote:
She knotted the rope in order to make a loop for her uncle to sit in so that he could be lowered down.

"Rest easy, Namrut. Should anything happen my magic will catch you."

When he saw the excitement in his eyes start to die down when they left the tomb, Azghaad brought up a delicate topic.

"Namrut... I can see you are a scholar by inclination, even if a merchant by occupation. Shalina has mentioned that you are... not gifted in magic" Azghaad skirts the topic delicately.

"While those naturally gifted with arcane power are fortunate, the power is available to those of Will and Intellect. I believe these are attributes you possess. You could learn magic."

"It is never too late to start. There are those who have lived far longer than you, and should you find a way to extend your lifespan you might live long enough to reach truly impressive heights. Moreover, you will be spending your life in pursuit of the ART."

"If you are interested I will teach you what I can, even induct you into the Ghostgrove temple. But do not undertake this path unless you are sure you can walk it. I do not ask for your answer now. But think on it."

RE cobra cage
Azghaad studied the cage carefully and will give his opinion
"Traditionally constructs don't have much intelligence, so I suspect if we put it in and it has not already broken free by the time we reach the tavern, then it probably won't."

"I am interested in seeing if I can find a way to interfere with its Tuppu using arcane energy. If I can, I may be able to render it impassive. It is likely to be a long process of experimentation. This cage would be ideal for experiments."

He giggled a little - seeming very young suddenly
"All my life I have looked for exciting new puzzles. Suddenly I am drowning in them!"

Azghaad wants to do ALL of them!

Well, someone else could give Namrut the tour, though as I go through the other options I am coming to think Azghaad is an excellent choice for tour guide.

Potentially someone else might look for a strong enough cage (not sure about glass?) for the iron cobra - or at least a chest with a grill under the lid. I suspect displaying the snake might have to wait :/

Finding out info on the next site seems very wise. Sounds like that might be more of a job for people with people skills though ;P

He's also like to put out word that he's interested in talking to the Nethians - is there a Nethian temple in town? They tend to be rare... If nothing else he could get his Household to make inquiries at the sellers of magical components.

Studying the books is probably Azghaad's preferred method of passing the time. On the other hand, there is no time pressure on when that has to be done by. I do think he'd do a slightly more comprehensive scan than he had already done.

Fabian Benavente wrote:
He looked at Azghaad, "Do you know them? Are you also requesting special priviliges?"

"No, and no. Simply fellow Nethians. I had thought I knew all the explorers, but I would have remembered them... As for special privileges: the terms were clear when I joined. I have some idea how popular this lottery is with Pharasmins - but I understand it at least leaves some control in the hands of your goddess. I wouldn't ask you to stand against that."

does it seem like they're looking for anything in particular in the description?

Quote:
Shalina turned towards Azghaad and asked, “Can you take the package home with you tonight? It should not pose a threat now that the box has been reinforced by rope.”

"Yes, that should be fine. I expect I'll need help to carry it though - it's awkwardly large for one person."

He sighs "Part of me would very much like to exhibit it at the Tooth and Hookah. Do you think that would be irresponsible bragging, Shalina?" tag Shalina

Actions 1

"The way I see it" explained Azghaad "It's going to take skilled laborers or prodigious magic to get the chariot and the mirror out without permanent damage." he looked around the dry, deserted city "I think hiring anyone to come out here is going to be interesting, or expensive, or both. That means magic. Magic means money. Lots of money."
"I guess the question is, 'is the money we spend getting them out and back to Namrut's going to be worth it'. For the chariot that's easy: what can we sell it for."
"For the mirror it is more complex. I doubt we're going to sell a magical trap, that obviously failed to work, on the open market. Possibly a collector might be interested - it's a fascinating piece. But I doubt we're going to make a profit on it. I'm interested, but I won't have a chance to really examine it until I return home."
"I'm inclined to say that if Namrut thinks we'll see a 300gp profit on the chariot, we bring it up. Any less than that probably isn't worth the effort."
"As for the mirror: I say we leave it here. I'll give you 50gp for the title, and if I can convince mo... my superiors to teleport out here and get it, then it's mine. Sound fair?"

When Namrut doesn't want the cobra in the house
"That IS probably fair. I'm a little worried about the chest holding myself. I'm sure there's a way to reprogram it somehow... but it could take a while. I'll give the group 100gp for it as is, and send it back home as a present. Otherwise we can call it group treasure and when I work out how to tame it so it can be sold we'll split it as normal. That'll mean buying a better cage, though, I think."
Azghaad will use the broken remains of the other snake to try to puzzle this one out

Actions 2
Azghaad waited impatiently as the office inhabitants had some argument over some... inconsequentiality.
Thank you Nethys that I'm, not actually standing here in real formal robes he prayed, absent minded as he waited.

Quote:
In a couple of minutes, the ornate hardwood door opened and two people came out, a stylish woman with a foppish hat and young wizard. They were clearly not in a good mood as they walked away. It was also clear that they were worshippers of Nethys by the necklace they both wore. Before anyone had a chance to say anything, they were asked inside the office.

Azghaad's head whipped around as he started at the ladies. He paused, shocked, then started to pivot just as they were called in.

Visibly torn between following his fellow Nethians and his colleagues he lost his opportunity, and reluctantly walked in to the office and opened his 'sketchbook'.
While there was no real style to Azghaad's drawings, they were exquisitely precise in their measurements.

Out of habit he wrote down the questions they were asked on another piece of paper. If he could work out what the Pharasmins wanted to know, then exploration could get much easier.

After they had recieved their next site (and not before) Azghaad asked "Who was in here before us, please. They had the look of fellow followers of the Way. It would be good to talk shop."

Azghaad is still interested in taking that mirror out, if he can work out how to move it without damaging it. Not sure what a 'thief-marking mirror' is worth in terms of party share if we do get it out. He's probably going to just donate it to a Nethian temple.
He's interested in collapsing Akentepi's burial chamber if it can be done safely (should give some protection for his bones) - assuming that will make Rubani and Naomi happy.
He's happy to give anyone a tour of the place. He's here at least in part because of scholarly curiosity, so he understands the drive in others.
He'll go with the party on the chariot.
Azghaad signed on based on that six way split. He'll want people reimbursed for what they spent so far (like alchemist's fire, the mule, etc). I (as a player) think that's probably too complicated to actually do, though, in which case he'll shrug and suggest starting up a kitty for future purchases.
Not much point being at the Tooth & Hookah when everyone else is out working.
He's happy to start hitting the second site: the first half of any job seems to be a lot of digging, so could get that started today. He's pretty sure the information he's after is in one of these tombs, but not sure which one. That makes him gung-ho.
On the other hand, he really wants to pore through those documents in good light, so he could go back to Namrut's and spend the day in studying.
If the group is going to be camping out at Namrut's (which makes sense) he'll want to start looking into renting a nearby house, or apartment, or something, so he can move in his people and himself. He heard stories of how rough the big city was, and what he's seen so far seems to bear that out.

Edit: We seem to be doing this OOC first. If we can find the points of conflict, that's probably where it's worth doing some roleplaying. Otherwise it's just a scene of everyone nodding furiously!

Azghaad, sat on the top of an ancient box with a VERY angry construct inside looked around with wide eyes.
"I can't believe that worked!" he shouted "That was incredible Shalina! We've managed to preserve a working example of exquisite construct craftsmanship!"

He looks around at the others, grinning like a lunatic.

"Uh... has anyone heard of a way to stop a guardian construct attacking?"
not sure it can even be done, given how much they cost...

"And, uh, I'm a little worried it's going to get me through the lid... Can anyone see a way to keep it in here if I get off?" a worried tone started to creep into the wizard's tone as he realised the precariousness of his pressed posterior.

Actions 2

"So... this is it? Rubani, Naomi... I recognise that on matters like these you're... the most... invested. I'm prepared to let you decide. Shalina, Akhmose, did you want to weigh in?"

Azghaad was getting out of the room in round 1- is all good though.

Round 3 and 4
Azghaad backed away even further as the flame took "They seem protected from my magic." he explained nervously, backing out of the room "I wish we didn't have to destroy them - they are beautiful creatures. If only there was some way to..." struck by inspiration he paused, then continued "Keep going! I'm going to get a chest from the roach room! Maybe we can restrain one!"
Azghaad bolted up the corridor, back to the room where they had fought the roaches. Quickly he cast his eye over the chests full of decayed, spoiled and ruined grave goods. Once he had selected the most solid looking chest he could carry he unceremoniously tipped it out and started hauling it back.

Plan is to have someone put a cobra in one of the most solid chests, then close the lid and sit on it. If the chests are obviously not going to do it, he'll stop. On the other hand, Akhentepi might well have ordered good solid chests to store his grave goods in.
The chests were open. If they're lidless, then carry one back, turn it upside down and try to slam it over a snake.

Just checking, the holy symbol of Pharasma we found is back at Namrut's, right?

Actions 1:
Azghaad looked pensively at the old man, then looked to his niece.
"Up to you, I think, Shalina."

Actions 2:
If possible, Azghaad would like to swap out overduplicated cantrips. There'd be a discussion with Rubani and Shalina, I think, on what those are. Would like someone to have Detect Poison, if possible. Would be prepared to lose Mage Hand if necessary. Might be a bit boring of a conversation to roleplay through, though.
I'd like to turn a burning hands into a magic missile, please (so 2 MMs)
I would like Azghaad to research an anti-construct spell when he has a chance.
"Friends, I would like you to reconsider these alchemical vials you carry on your persons."
conversation in-retro?

Actions 3:
Round 1:
"No fire in here!" ordered Azghaad, as he anxiously looked at the room and backed away.
A silver streak of light emerged from his hand at a shouted word and slammed into the nearest cobra.
Standard: cast magic missile. Move: Back away! Intention to use a clear area in the next room, and burn the snakes away from the precious items.

Round 2, everyone crowded in:
Azghaad shrugged and allowed his team-mates the room to prove their martial skill.

Round 2, people are actually backing away:
Azghaad, gestured for his team mates to move behind him and prepared to burn the snakes when they entered the burn zone.
Ready an action to cast Burning Hands on the snakes when in range.

Ninja'd!

yep. I guess the hope would be that he's motivated to find a better price, rather than just unloading them quickly to recoup his capital.

Azghaad let himself be guided back to his own group, and waited until back at their table to hiss
"It's not right. We shouldn't be letting her talk about Rubani like this. I mean, I'm Nethian, so I understand why she'd think I'd do that. But why would she think he would? He's so..." he discarded a few harsher words before settling on a gentler one "...unworldly. Typical that one of them should get advice from an expert and immediately distrust it. It's soured me towards cooperation - though I do want to talk to the Nexani mage."

before leaving...
Drink in hand Azghaad made his way over to the mage again
"I hope I'm not bothering you." he inquired politely "I realise this is not the time, but I understand you are from Nex? I am a great admirer. May I ask your name and affiliation?"
aiming for a meeting in a quieter setting sometime.
