"BEST ENDING EVER!" Ayla exclaims.

"Well, that's an awesome story if I've ever heard one!" Ayla pipes up. "Heroes, villains, pretty ladies, subterfuge, tragedy! Awesome! Man, that's going to make an awesome addition to my book. So tell me, how do I spell your name dear? Right, and Koth'Vaul? Great, great."

With a bow and a doff of her magnificent, regal straw hat, Ayla announces, "Well, I'm Ayla! Ayla Vivindor! Celebrated novelist and all around amazing adventurer!"

Ayla digs around in her bag a produces a professional looking novel entitled 'Ada Mantine and the Overly Convoluted Mystery, An Adventure Novel by Ayla Vivindor.' She passes it to the ghaele.

"Read it, read it! You'll love it, I swear! It's the best one I've written! Ada's gone on 16 adventures--most based on my own exploits, mind you--and this one's pretty nifty! Based on my last mission in Mendev! A little confusing, but, you know those crusaders, huh? Demons this and demons that and -- well honestly there's no demons in this one at all. All kinds of human hubris though! And superstitions! Oh, it's a good one! Of course, thanks to Kothy over there my next novel will contain demons. Huh. Bit of irony there I suppose."

She waits a whopping four seconds before asking "Well, whaddya' think? Pretty swanky, huh? Want me to sign it for you?"

Ayla whips out a quill and proceeds to sign the novel. "You know there's a fan club for Ada Mantine called the Adamants, who dig around and try to find all the hidden gems in those novels! I'll give you a pin!" She pulls out a shiny little pins and pins it onto the outsider. Each reads: 'ADAMANT! I <3 ADA MANTINE!' Then she grins. "You should join the fan club. It's gonna be HUGE!"

Ayla sticks her backpack back on and grins. "So about this demon I totally knew was bad news –– you're welcome for saving your lives, everyone! –– just one spell and he's gone? Bazap and done? Sounds suspect! What are the complications we're talking about here? Chance for mishaps? Chances it will work?"

"Neato!"

Ayla plops it on her head without a second thought.

Ayla tries to slide the metal band off of Illvaster's horn!

Ayla pulls out a potion and drinks it.

Healing: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9 Back up to full.

She stands up, dusts herself off, and retrieves her dropped gear. While the others check on the chick in the circle Ayla scampers over to the dead dragon and checks to see if it has any nice loot on it.... She also peers into the water, wondering if dead dragons keep hoards...

Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19

"Nope, pretty sure you're mistaken. Must not have been staring at me hard enough. I was clearly playing possum."

Ayla's mostly untethered spirit settles a bit, happy and content to hang around a little longer.

Nothing happens. Because this scene never happened.

Ayla cut it in the final editing process of her next novel due to extreme absurdity! No one would ever believe Ayla Vivindor Ada Mantine would nearly die sit out a fight!

Absurdity!

...Meanwhile, Ayla lays on the ground, only 'nearly dead.' Which is a great step up from 'almost certainly dead.'

I am stable at -8! Thanks for making sure Ayla live to chatter on incessantly! That was a close one!

Unable to take an AoO with her crossbow, Ayla settles for ducking the hand. She draws her rapier in her free hand, and stabs at the green hand.

Attack: 1d20 + 3 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 3 + 2 + 1 = 25
Piercing Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 1
Sneak Attack: 1d6 ⇒ 1

Confirming a Critical: 1d20 + 3 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 3 + 2 + 1 = 16

Yup, melee powerhouse right here! Haha.

FYI both of my kids are sick. Not sure if I'll be able to get a post in tomorrow.

Ayla takes aim at the Ilvaster and fires a shot from her crossbow at it!

Ranged Attack: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 6 + 1 = 27
Piercing Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Sneak Attack (if needed): 1d6 ⇒ 6

Then she reloads!

Confirming a Critical: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 6 + 1 = 18

"Now, don't forget, Ilvaster. He said to start with the chatty gnome and that is DEFINITELY him. I mean, listen to him! Yammering about kill this and kill that and puny mortals. Go on, now. You know it's true. Koth-Vaul is definitely the chatty gnome you should start by killing!"

Ayla smiles pleasantly and nods her head.

"PFFFT!" Ayla exclaims. "You're full of bull-dung! Now, I fancy a tall tale now and then, but that's just bonkers! For starters, the Thrallkeepers vanished along with the runelords thousands of years ago. It'd be biologically impossible for any human to be a tenth-generation descendant of Johanis. Also, any gnome trapped in the same place for more than a year is subject to the Bleaching. That's why I always keep moving! And you're perfectly healthy! There's no way you're a gnome!"

She chuckles. "So, like I said, we'll be back to deal with you later, pal! Then we'll figure out what kind of malicious, lying, shapeshifting, long-lived, creature you are. My money's still on demons and vampires, but feel free to surprise me!"

"Come on, Kalky. Let's finish what we've started pal."

As she walks she points at her companions. "Don't you get near those circles and prisons! I mean it! Hey! Baijiu! That means you, too! get away from there!"

She shakes her head. "Yeeeesh. Amateurs. Good thing we're here, hey Doc? Yes siree! Nothing gets past me! Not coin, not lies, not time! You can bet on it!"

Seeing the elf in the prison she grins. "Oh, look! Another big faker! We'll get to her later."

Which way does Kalkamedes seem to want to lead us?

"WAY too long to be normal! Maybe he's a shapeshifting demon! Oh! Or a vampire! That'd be SUCH a great TWIST!"

Ayla waves at the gnome. "Hiya, pal! What are you doing in there? Boy, that's mighty suspicious! Hey? Ain't it suspicious, guys? Yeah! They know it. I know it too! So why are you in there? Don't be shy, speak up!" Without giving the gnome a chance to speak she grins. "Well, I can't wait to here the story, but I'm going to have to! Ya' see my pal Kalky over here needs to go this other way, so it's that way we're gonna go. But, don't worry! I'll TOTALLY be back in a jiffy. Kay? Cool! See ya'!"

Ayla waves goodbye to the gnome and starts to head down the southwest passage that Kalkamedes wants to go down.

Open to stopping to chat with the suspicious gnome, of course, but Ayla thinks we should settle things with Kalkamedes first. He'll be easier to handle (I hope!) once he's done his thing.

Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14

Ayla scampers over to the pillar. Using it for cover she peeks around to look down the SE tunnel.

Ayla hops out of the elevator and looks around.

She calls up the shaft. "We're out! Tell me when you're in the lift! I've got a lever down here, too!"

Once they call down that they're ready, Ayla moves the lever to the down position.

"I don't see any lever in here. Some of you need to stay up here and send us down!"

"Oh, we're riding it alright! Come on!"

Ayla moves the lever to the middle position, waits for it to open, and steps inside the cage.

Perception (inside the cage): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21

"Wow! Look at this! You know there's no better way to figure out what something does than to do it, ya' know?!"

Ayla heads over to the lever and pulls on it!

Ayla checks the hall for traps as she travels down it.
Perception (hall): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29 (+1 higher vs. traps)

When she reaches the narrow walkway she stops and looks around.
Perception (what's in the cage?): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22
Perception (what's in the shaft?): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21

Then she checks the narrow walkway for traps.
Perception (suspicious bridge!): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15 (+1 higher vs. traps)

Strength: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20

"PUSH!"

Ayla laughs at her companion's silliness! "Oh, what's to wonder about, Korivan? That plaque told us exactly what's going on. 'Their strength is their weakness and our weaknesses are our very strength.' Remember? Lucky for me I'm immune to that sort of thing. It happens when you've explored ancient ruins as long as I have." She chuckles. "You know, for an adventurer you've got a pretty poor memory. You take a lot of blows to the head? You might want to get that looked at."

She gives the door a push.

Strength: 1d20 ⇒ 12

"Come on, guys! Put your back into it! Especially all you scrawny fellows!"

@ GM: Ayla activated the light function of her wayfinder that hangs off her belt in the post above yours.

While the others check out the statue, Ayla checks the door and area in front of it for traps.

Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14 (+1 higher vs. traps)

Deciding it's totally safe she tries to push open the door.

Ayla draws her rapier and activates the way finder on her belt, causing it to glow brightly. She takes the lead, checking for traps and other dangers as they go. Her pace is slow, for once, as checking for traps takes a bit of time.

"This is going to be awesome!"

Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17 (+1 higher vs. traps)

I have a crazy busy weekend coming up and will be unable to get a post in. Should be back to normal posting Monday.

"So, what's it say, exactly? I can't use my vast knowledge if you don't translate ominous inscriptions accurately ya' know!"

Ayla pockets the tanglefoot bags while her companions down their potions.

At the sight of the ruins Ayla grins like a mad woman. Or, like herself, really. She rubs her hands together in anticipation. "Nice job, Kalky! Well, let's get a move on and take a peek inside, shall we?"

Ayla heads into the valley and towards the building entrance.

The Doc works with Ayla to tie Kalkamedes' tether to a tree, hoping that will be sufficient.

Ayla walks over to where she and the forgetful-Doc tied Kalkamedes to a tree.

"Sup, Kalky?"

"Didn't we tie him to a tree before tis started? He should be right over here..."

FYI, Ayla didn't drop her crossbow. She has an unloaded crossbow in one hand and a rapier in her other.

Ayla lets out a mad laugh at the zombie romance unfolding before her. When her giggles die down Ayla stabs at yellow with her rapier.

Attack: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 3 + 1 = 12
Piercing Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2

She suddenly bursts out laughing again. "Pfffft-hahaha! I'm sorry, but I can't take you guys seriously." She shakes her head and watches yellow continues to be hugged by his dead pal.

Ayla raises her crossbow and fires a bolt at yellow from point blank.

Ranged Attack: 1d20 + 6 + 1 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (3) + 6 + 1 + 1 - 4 = 7
Piercing Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

But she misses again. "Wow! You're harder to hit than a raindrop, pal! Are you getting enough to eat?" Dietary concerns aside, Ayla pulls out her rapier in her off hand and takes a (five foot) step to the side.

"Whatever floats your boat, Doc." Ayla remarks, apparently not concerned in the least that the weirdo next to her wants to watch a bunch of people die. She aims her crossbow at the pink fellow and fires!

Ranged Attack: 1d20 + 6 + 1 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 6 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 15 (FYI: +1 bless, +1 guidance, +1 pointblank shot)
Piercing Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Then she reloads her crossbow.

Ayla pulls out her crossbow as she scampers down the path, then loads it. She smiles sweetly at the bandits. "Hey, guys! Gorgon's Privateer's hey? That's a pretty sweet name. Which is great! I'm a novelist see, and I'd prefer to use your proper name in my book. Defeated villains are cooler if they've got rockin' names. Do any of you feel the need to surrender before we start killing you? Now's your last chance. Holler nice and loud, now. I might not be able to hear you over your pal's screams."

Hey everyone!

It's both of my kids birthdays tomorrow and we have a lot of parties to attend this month. It's unlikely I'll be able to post any weekend in March, starting with this one. And I definitely won't be posting tomorrow. If we happen to be playing on a weekend this month and you're waiting on Ayla, feel free to bot me.

Ayla looks around for a nearby tree that they can quickly tie Kalky to.

"Oh, I can talk to anything," Ayla points out, "But not for long! Want to hear a squirrel?"

"Squeak, squeak, mcsqueakum!"

"Or... a frog! Ribbit, ba-rup! CROOOOOOOAK!"

"Oh... with a mrrrooowww and a rufff and a quack waaaaak waaaaak!" she sings. "And a twitch twitch -- awwwww! It wore off. Shucks! Well, you'll have to wait for tomorrow to hear my monkey sounds. I make a pretty good gibbon if I do say so myself! You ever seen a gibbon? Why, I once spent three weeks living with gibbons in the Dembe valley. That's in the Screaming Jungle, mind." She laughs for a while, as if at a memory. "Ahhh... good times! Greatest brachiators around, those little scamps! How about you, guys? Any of you live with gibbons? Maybe gorillas? Particularly wild halflings?"

"I know, I'm brilliant," Ayla acknowledges as they leave the bears behind. "Of course I'm out of food now, so someone's going to have to share with me later. Oh! Or maybe I can try to live off the land! Ha! That'd be fun! I can eat bugs and berries and potentially poisonous plants! Man, this is going to be the most exciting road-trip ever!"

Ayla dumps out her backpack and pulls out a bunch of foodstuffs.

She gives all of her rations (four days worth) to the bears, even the food they didn't ask for and her last cookie.

Ayla quickly stuffs the rest of her stuff in her backpack and turns to the others. "Hey anyone got a fresh fish in their bag? I want to sweeten the deal!"

Ayla nods.

Ayla gives her fingers a snap, clears her throat, and moves over to the bears. Staying about thirty feet away, she starts to roar at it, making a surprisingly good bear impersonation.

My kids love picking out that book for anyone who visits our home and they can convince to read them a story. Then they laugh mercilessly at them as they fumble through the tongue twisters. Haha. So good.

"Are the poodles eating noodles? Cause that'd be pretty rad," Ayla remarks. "If only!"

No worries! Take your time to get well.

Ayla grins at the sword. "Don't worry, I'll slip you and Kalky a copy of my memoirs at a discount. Then you'll both know the glory of my history! Why did you know -- OH!" She points at the ground. "HEY LOOK! A tweetle beetle! Oh, nope. Just a normal beetle. LAME! Tweetle beetles are way cooler. Hey, have you ever seen a tweetle beetle battle? Talk about epic! Why you haven't seen a duel until you've seen a pair of tweetle beetles battle in a puddle with their paddles! OH! Tweetle beetle bottle puddle paddle battles are pretty great too... "

"Hey LOOK! Kalky's moving! Onward, to ADVENTURE!"

Ayla laughs. "I already did! A long time ago! Yeeesh! Don't you listen? Oh, yeah! You weren't here! Hahahahaha! Well, that's what you get for showing up late, I suppose!" Ayla shakes her head at Korivan. "Well, no worries pal. I happen to have my entire life story available for purchase in my memoirs! Only ten gold! A steal of a deal for a book this quality. And cause you're so passionate about it, I'll even give you a signed copy for no extra charge!" Ayla pulls out a signed copy of her autobiography and offers it to Korivan. Then she holds out her other hand, waiting for the gold. "Well? Pretty swanky looking, huh?! It's a best-seller!"

"As for your accusations, I made everyone well aware they'd be the inspiration for my life to fiction novels starring Ada Mantine! There were no complaints, which constitutes a verbal agreement by non-refusal as per Absalom Freedom of Speech act 2673, Article 9." She grins widely. "You can thank my good pal Geico All-Hearth for that little gem! He's an Abadaran insurance adjustor I had the pleasure of working with on my first mission. Well, my first officially sanctioned mission, mind you. It pays to have friends in the know, you know!"

She waggles her eyebrows at Korivan, still waiting for her gold. "Actually, come to think of it, since you were late, you never got that information. Well, you know it now! So, do I have your permission to retell our tale and feature you in my next Ada Mantine novel? Or are you refusing to be a part of this amazing, once in a lifetime opportunity, friend?"

Ayla pulls out ink, an ink pen, and her journal and begins taking copious notes in a scribbled shorthand. "Wow, I'm loving the backstory talk, guys. Usually it takes forever to tease the troubles out of people! I hope you know I'm going to use all of this as inspiration for the characters my book. Yup! The world will know your tales! ...In slightly exaggerated and a much more entertaining fashion! Good stuff here, guys! Good stuff!"

She looks to Liasna, curious if she's going to spill her secrets as well.

When Liasna's done, Ayla pats Kalkamedes on the leg as she packs up her writing supplies. "You can tell me your tale when you wake up, pal. Alright? Yup! I hear ya'!"

She prances in place for a moment, points off into the distance, and shouts, "And.... WE'RE OFF!"

Ayla passes out a snack she stole packed to everyone. "Here, guys! Might as well stop for a bite to eat while he's contained." Then she sits down on top of the thrashing Kalkamedes as if he was a chair. "Whoo! Wonder how long I can hang on!" she laughs.

Acrobatics to sit on Kalky!: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28

"Nice try, Kalky, but I've had rougher rides! Why, did I ever tell you about the time I rode a dire rhino bareback through a windstorm? Man, that was a challenge! So there I was...."

Amazing Storytelling!: 1d20 ⇒ 18

"...and that's why you never bring a cheese roll on safari!"

Ayla hops up to her feet, dusts her hands off, and grabs onto the belt. "Ready for me to free him? Someone grab that rope of ours, we're going to need to leash him all over again."

He did! That's one of my favourites scenarios to play and GM, actually. I game a lot with my kids at home and it's just a fun one for the whole family. I think his most recent Pathfinder project was the Construct Handbook. He did quite a few archetypes, monsters, and templates for it.
