After all most of warfare isn't on the battlefield but in who has the best intelligence on the enemies positions and movements. Argus will gently wake the sleeping hippogriff and get it acclimated to his touch. Once it is secured so that it does not fly off he will begin to quickly get the other two familiar with his scent and the scents of the others. He obviously does not expect them trained anytime soon but is trying to see how feasible it will be to get them to follow their trained broodmate back to the encampment. ![]()

Better yet I can put one through his leg or arm so that he is easier taken for questioning. Whichever you decide. Argus has an almost bored quality to his voice as he talks. ![]()

Let me take a look before we go charging in to make sure they didn't get reinforcements. He will just take a quick look as the rest of his group is moving closer and he will meet with them at a point half a mile away from the encampment to let them know so they can all go in together. ![]()

Once back at camp he will inform the group of what he found unless he is waylaid upon the trip back. Slipping inside the obscured entrance, Argus says with a grin Well...I'm back. There appear to be 4 Orc guards and three creatures in cages that look to be Hippogriffs. Those flying mounts would be a great boon to our fight if we could capture them. Scouts can win and lose wars as easily as soldiers. ![]()

![]() Am I able to get an idea on number of guards? Identity of creatures in the cage? When do the guards change? Let me know any rolls you'd like me to make for these answers. After making a circuit, Argus finds a good position where he can watch the encampment and get a feel for it. A good scout spends most of his time sitting and waiting. If you are bored...you are usually doing it right. he thinks, remembering his training. He watches for a few hours until he has gotten all the information he can before heading back to the cave. ![]()

![]() Can I get an idea of the general dimensions of the camp? Wooden Palisades? Stone? How many gates? etc. After doing a circuit around the camp to get an idea of how big it is, Argus takes a good long look at the fortifications and stays a while watching the goings on. He takes mental note of any changes in guard or shift. ![]()

Not one to take a direct route in case his trail is discovered, Argus does a bit of backtracking and laying of false trails as he goes in order to confuse any that stumble across them. ![]() Argus looks at the cave entrance and does a quick survey of the ceiling, checking for smoke channels and the like to see how the smoke from a fire would form and raise. Seeing nothing out of the ordinary he says A small fire of extremely dry wood should be fine if kept inside the cave after we obscure the entrance. The dry wood will not give much smoke and the light will not be visible after the entrance is covered. As for the entrance a natural blind would be the best idea using the tree and some other materials. ![]()

![]() Argus looks up at the rest of his group and says There were three humanoids here as well as a single four legged animal. The tracks were obscured so I cannot tell more than that I am afraid. ![]() Argus picks up a few trail rations as well 10 days and tucks them in his saddlebags. Climbing briskly up on his reddish-brown gelding, it's deep chest and long legs speaking of speed and endurance, Argus waits for the others to mount before heading off with Manny. Once outside the encampment, Argus begins his normal task of scouting ahead in loops of half a mile before returning to the group for a ways and then heading out again. He travels with his bow strung and an arrow nocked, his experience being that when you don't have your weapons at hand is exactly when you need them. ![]()

![]() Argus rolls out of his tent with a sigh, standing up he knuckles his back before doing a few quick stretches to get his blood pumping. Pulling his shirt of fine mail over his head he grabs his bow and strings it before pulling his big axe around to hang in the sling over his shoulder. Seeing the rest of the camp in motion he scratches the stubble on his face as he walks over to the mustering ground. His stride one of easy grace, instinctively stepping around twigs and leaves, he makes very little noise as he goes. If his no good father could see him now. A bastard son of a minor noble house, his father paid him off to join the fighting not knowing that he had intended to go anyway. Now he lives on his own terms...or at least as much on his terms as he can in a military unit. Seeing Hengest, Gundahar, and "Manny" as Argus calls the good Sir Manfred, are already there he heads over their direction. Walking up with a grin he says, A knight, a priest, and a wizard...isn't that the start of a bad joke? Winking at them to make sure they know he is jesting, Argus falls in beside them. |
