Background:
Born the third son of a wealthy but unremarkable merchant family, Aref was neither the shrewd merchant or female heir his parents had wanted. As such he was packaged up and shipped out of Casmaron to relations in Garund, along with his brothers. He chose the life of a scholar, finding his thirst for knowledge insatiable but never bothering to take the next step many of his peers did and learn the arcane arts.

Aref had his sights set on other skills and turned to the ancient texts of great sword masters and analyzing their techniques in great detail. Of course, it takes more than books to become a great swordsman. Aref had a powerful build, yes, but was rarely quick enough to avoid his opponent's blows and found himself unable to move effectively in heavy armors. Often, he earned many a new bruise but always greeted defeat with a smile and platitudes.

It was not until his first archeological dig that he first realized he was cut from a different cloth than his fellow academics. Secrets are the stock and trade of many on Golarion and they often defend their secrets jealously. Aref had made a life tracking down and learning secrets, knowledge was only ever something that could be good and even the foulest of it could be used for the good of others even if it merely was to prevent its use.

His opposites in the Chelaxian academies often had many ulterior motives, the Aspis Consortium as well. Even the Pathfinder Society was a cause for suspicion from time to time. In fact, the list of organizations that might try to control knowledge for their own gain is very, very long. Just who they were is functionally irrelevant but Aref and his companions rapidly found themselves set upon. They tried to deal with ruffians reasonably but when an unarmed old man gets cut down for trying to preserve his academic integrity, reasonable gets tossed to the side.

Aref was never a great swordsman, but he was lucky, tough, and smart. A pile of dead thugs later and Aref found just what they had been after. A sword, brimming with magic and singing his praises. It promised him power in return for servitude, it promised a noble quest, it promised many things. Aref collected it and his surviving companions, returned to his current school and subjected the weapon to rigorous study and examination. After determining that the weapon would do more good than harm and squeezing every bit of information out of it, Aref sent word to the relevant authorities and deposited the sword in their care.

He quickly learned that even magic swords could sound annoyed.

Since then the acquisition and appropriate disposal of magical artifacts and prophecies has become something of his specialty. He reasoned that there were plenty of shepherds and farm hands to out there itching to become heroes. His skills were best turned elsewhere.

It has been a long battle and Aref longs for a more permanent solution. There are few that would take his approach to the fight for knowledge and so he must make plans for the day when he can no longer carry his sword and fight for the truth. Mercenary work, while distasteful, has become become a necessity for this plan of his. He can see it, an academy where martial competency and a love of knowledge are taught in equal measure. A place where the truth is thoroughly examined and put to use for the greatest good. Until this retirement of his, he has to make every day count.

Appearance and Personality:
Aref is the picture of a relatively young Kelish scholar. He is tall but not impressively so, with the dark eyes, darker hair and dusky skin of his people. Handsome in a forgettable way, he possesses noble features reminiscent of the flattering portraits of old kings and lost heroes. Recently, he has started looking sharper and leaner, gaining some wear around the edges as he moves away from the life of comfort he originally knew.

His upbringing has left him with a careful pride about his appearance. He always keeps himself well groomed. His hair is clean and beard always immaculately trimmed. The only time he let himself fall behind on such rituals is when it was impossible to shave either for lack of water or other reasons.

He dresses well too, still favoring the patterns and styles of his homeland. Even his cold weather gear is similar to the flowing desert garments one would expect to see in the sun drenched Kelesh Empire. Aref prefers darker colors since they make him seem more stoic and reserved but the edges betray his youth of wealth with complexly embroidered geometric patterns in silver and gold. Almost inevitably he chooses a deep red sash to tie around his waist.

Aref is a genuinely kind individual, if a bit distant at times. He was raised to be unfailingly polite and, outside of dire circumstances, continues this tradition. This includes meeting the petty threats and insults of one of the former traveling companions with stoic silence as opposed to escalating fury.

He is also a remarkably intelligent man, only gaining greater intellect as time has advanced. He is a polymath and has at least a basic academic knowledge of many subjects. His companions have often caught him idly sketching architectural diagrams or making anatomical illustrations in his notebooks. Indeed, his journal looks more like an experiment log than personal record in many places.
