Backstory:

Amaya had always believed that she was destined for great things. Born to an orphanage in Nidal dedicated to the Midnight Lord. Not knowing her parents, Amaya had always imagined that they had been someone exotic, and that some misfortune had struck them, leaving her in the orphanage. She refused to believe that she had been unwanted, or a mistake, or something else. Unfortunately for Amaya, her delusions of grander never really materialized, but she was adopted in her late teens to an older gentleman with a fascination for shadow magic.

Being young and quick, Amaya was useful to her new guardian, helping him retrieve texts and aid in his research. For his part, her guardian taught her a little of the Midnight Lord and his religion, while telling her a little about the Shadow Plane - although despite her pleas the man refused to teach her in actual magic.

Time passed and Amaya learned more about her masters goals. The man wanted to explore the boundaries of the negative energy plane, as well as the shadow plane, believing that a person's shadow held the key towards breaking down barriers to some sort of untapped power.

One night, Amaya awoke to fight herself strapped down to a table, her master chanting in some weird tongue. It seemed that the man had been attempting to use Amaya all along as a test subject, trying to see whether his theory was correct. As Amaya thrashed around trying to be free her own shadow rose up of its own accord, its long slender fingers gripping into her throat. Overcome with fear and lack of breath, Amaya promptly lost consciousness, feeling the shadow pressing through her.

Amaya woke to a find her bindings slashed, the room destroyed and her adopted father lying in a pool of blood. Splashed across the walls, painted entirely in blood, were the words HELLO AMAYA.

"Too Much?" a snide voice remarked from inside her head

For the first few nights afterward, Amaya refused to stay in shadow, either surrounding herself with lanterns, or sleeping during the day. She isolated herself, terrified of hurting someone without her awareness. For his part, the dry, sarcastic entity within her head refused to shut up, constantly pleading with Amaya to 'let it out to play'. Amaya discovered that she also had new abilities, dark energy balls of gravity that could do significant damage. For its part, the entity, calling itself Damon seemed pleased with development, and pushed for Amaya to take these abilities 'out for a spin'.

Worried about losing control of either Damon or these new psychic abilities, Amaya set out into the world to try and master her new powers. She swore to herself that she would only use them for good, trying to make something positive out of the bad. Damon seemed disappointed about this but still seemed satisfied that Amaya was continuing to use her powers, perhaps hoping the corrupting influence would strength. Amaya knew that eventually she would be forced into a decision. She must master her dark powers before they master her...

Appearance and Personality:

Amaya is an ivory skinned slim human female, with long dark brown hair and brown eyes. The past few months of keeping weird hours and lack of sleep has made her look exceptionally pale, at the same time her vigorous training keeps her relatively slim in build. In dress, Amaya prefers rather plain attire, but always defaulting to black.

The the most unusual factor in her apperance is Amaya's shadow. It remains always at her back, stubbornly holding its shape no matter the position of the sun. When Damon's influence is particularly strong, the shadow moves, getting a slightly more hungry look, its long arms and slim fingers lengthening...

Amaya also prefers to avoid sunlight if possible. She likes the darkness, the dim light, feeling most at home in shadow. She experiments with her Basic Chaokinesis ability to effectively 'dress' herself in gauzy shadow clothing, attempting to form shadow bodysuits but finds such tasks difficult in bright light.

Morality wise, Amaya attempts to do the 'right' thing as much as she can, being kind, helping others and so on. Despite this, she has a darker side, that constantly whispers to her in Damon's voice. Its like an itch that wants to be scratched and represents a more violent and dangerous part of Amaya's psyche. Amaya believes that Damon's voice grows stronger the more she uses her powers, and therefore tends to avoid situations that would encourage her to use them - on the other hand her darker side actively encourages her to use them.

The problem? Amaya actively likes using her powers. It is an amazing feeling, having such power at her fingertips, to lash out and have power over someone else. Its an intoxicating feeling and even though Amaya knows that its 'bad' she cannot bring herself to find an alternative permanent solution. She attempts to justify it by resorting to using her abilities against those that might prey upon the less fortunate but even this is born out of revenge and retaliation, rather than some sense of justice.

As a note on future progression, Amaya will probably be taking further levels in kineticist, which means that her powers are going to grow and will be harder for remain a stereotypical'good person'. Right now, her alignment is swings from one side to another depending on mood and who she surrounds herself with. Perhaps in a good aligned party she masters her powers, perhaps in a more evil aligned party her powers and up mastering her...

20 Questions:

1. What emotion best describes your character?

Unease is probably the most apt emotion that describes Amaya. She has rarely found true peace and remains on guard at all times. Her interaction with her adopted father has resulted in a degree of wariness when interacting with people. In addition to this, Amaya is wary of her own strength, as well as Damon's influence gradually corrupting her good intentions. She's perpetually concerned about losing control of her psychic powers accidentally (or worse, on purpose) and so remains on alert.

2. What emotion does your character evoke in others?

Fear would be the most common emotion that Amaya evokes. She's been largely solitary intimidating individual (lacking significant people in her live she can trust), that practices shadow magic, and has a shade living inside her head trying to encourage darker impulses. Even putting all the above aside, Amaya's own shadow is an intimidating sight, reflecting Damon's shade form - its uncanny characteristics making Amaya stand out. People tend to fear what they don't understand, and there is much about Amaya that is simply unnatural.

Finally, an aura is fear is actually what Amaya tries to cultivate as often as possible. She's afraid of lashing out, perhaps in response to someones drunken challenge and therefore hopes that by projecting a fearful persona or aura, she would discourage aggressive. Its not conducive towards making friends but it seems to be working for Amaya so far.

3. What does your character need most?

Amaya wants normalcy but will probably never get it. To her knowledge, there isn't a way to reverse the event that gave her her powers. Failing normalcy, mastery of her powers would probably provide some semblance of inner peace although Amaya isn't sure what mastery would even look like. She supposes getting Damon to give up attempting to influence her, or even better, getting Damon to see her point of view would be some sort of major goal or victory.

4. What is your character’s goal in life?

Ideally proving to Damon that she's incorruptible would be something worthwhile for Amaya, as its a constant struggle to be aware at all times, trying not to slip. She would feel a great deal of satisfaction, at the end of her life, if she had held out for so long.

5. How does your character believe this goal can be accomplished?

Amaya is ideally trying to appeal to Damon's interests in a way that align with her own preferences. Damon wants to destroy, and wants Amaya to use her powers more often - thinking that will corrupt her. For her part, Amaya is ok about using her powers, but to protect and defend others - which might involve hurting evil people as a byproduct. Its a push and pull sort of relationship, something Amaya is struggling to balance.

6. Where did your character come from?

An orphanage in Nidal

7. When did you grow up?

Amaya had two periods of 'growth'. Firstly, she would have had to grow up vast in an orphanage in Nidal. She would have also had to grow up vast after the ritual and its effects, as well as striking out on her own.

8. What values does your character hold?

Amaya cares deeply about perseverance, family, and trust. The latter two are things that she hasn't really experienced much herself, but its something that she wants others to have - which is partly why she helps others. The former value is very close to Amaya's heart, and she has deep respect for those who continue to fight on despite the circumstances.

On the other hand, Amaya loathes anything predetermined such as fate. She dislikes any outcome being set in stone - inevitability is something she and Damon often fight about. She dislikes abandonment - again knowing personally what it feels like, as well as those who pursue power and strength over others.

9. How does your character dress?

Amaya will always try and dress nicely, something nice and fashionable. People notice apperance, and by looking socially aware, beautiful, or even rich she hopes to earn respect or positivity, thinking that people would treat her differently if they knew her actual background. It also hearkens back to her earlier life in the orphanage where she liked pretending she was something she wasn't, or had an exotic family tree.

More recently, Amaya has flirted with the idea of dressing herself in darkness and shadow with her Basic Chaokinesis ability. She's found limited success, but its something she continues to try, trying to mimic form fitting dark clothing as a way of practicing her new abilities without hurting anyone. When successful, the overall darkness effect is like a second skin clinging to Amaya's body, but often the slightest distraction can ruin her control. Amaya thinks the exercise could have value in hiding armor more easily but doesn't have the control yet to achieve this.

Amaya usually has her long straight dark hair unbound, and doesn't really like accessories such as jewelry. She likes them, but such items can get travel dirty. On her feet, she usually wears boots, and always defaults to black as a color of choice, preferring to blend in and be striking at the same time depending on her environment.

10. What are your character’s means?

Amaya has limited 'means'. As an orphan, effectively travelling alone, she has few possessions. She has coin, and saves it whenever she can, but she doesn't place a high priority on material wealth. Likewise she is also 'socially' poor, in that she has limited friends or allies - again in a way that Amaya tends to like it - having difficulty trusting strangers.

With that said, Amaya is courageous, persistent, determined. She has the ability to think tactically and rarely gives up, hellbent on finding a solution to whatever problem she is currently facing. In addition, while she and Damon have differences, she's not above calling on him for different insights or help should it be required, depending on the stakes. Sometimes two heads are better than one.

11. What are your character’s personal tastes?

Amaya likes observing - particularly secretly watching families. She misses what other people have, and feels a little bit of envy. It both hurts and pleases her to see the natural things she missed out on as an orphan, and likes watching the simple things. She always does it secretly though, knowing that its a little odd.

In her spare time, Amaya likes to stargaze and daydream, always trying to think of happier times (or alternatively creating fantasies). She also likes the finer things in live, clothing, accomodation, food, purely for the perceived 'status'. Amaya presents herself as being intimidating but secretly likes the attention she might get from helping someone, part of her wants to be someone of significance and her powers (for better or worse) give her the potential to be someone different.

There are not many 'true' things that frighten Amaya. Darkness used to be one of them, but Amaya has largely mastered this fear. She does have a strong fear of failure, as she sets high goals for herself and is worried about meeting them. She also worries about finding out who her parents are. She wants so desperately to be somebody but is terrified of finding out that answer being someone mundane, or learning that she was unwanted or an accident. Lastly, Amaya dislikes the water. She's never really learnt to swim, having no-one to teach her, and Damon isn't entirely keen on water either. She isn't terribly afraid of the water, just tries to avoid it.

12. What are your character’s opinions?

Amaya has very outspoken opinions - mostly about people. She tends to believe that people are very superficial, focusing on immediate appearances. Amaya based that on her own experiences - people see her shadow and assume the worst often before getting to know her. She also believes that people fear what they don't understand, and that trust should always be earned.

13. What is your character’s comfort zone?

Peace and quiet ideally. Amaya enjoys practicing her basic chaokineticist ability as a simple thing to take her mind off any distractions. When she's troubled Amaya will typically closer her eyes, think, reflect, plan, practice, mediate until she feels calm and in control.

14. Who has had the biggest impact on your character’s life?

Damon right now, is the biggest influence on Amaya's life. Some would argue that Damon lives for destruction, but this isn't entirely true - Damon lives for power, and wants Amaya to continue to use the variety of abilities, strengths and gifts she has. Fiercely competitive, Damon loves limit testing, pushing boundaries, the rush of 'winning' a fight. To some extend, Amaya secretly enjoys some of these things as well (although she refuses to admit it) - something Damon has picked up on.

Despite Amaya and him differing philosophically, the two of them will always work together when required - after a few sarcastic quips. Damon projects a confidence or experience that Amaya sometimes lacks - but they both have a lot to learn from each other.

15. What are some of your character’s unexpected quirks?

Amaya used to be scared of the dark, and would sleep with candles surrounding her. Now, more frequently, she avoids bright light, and feels more at home in the dark, since embracing her powers. She also wants to design her own clothing, hopefully something that can be easily altered based on someones mood. She has no idea about how such an invention could be created though. Amaya is also a bit of a bookworm, particularly in area's of genealogy such as history and nobility, the latter due to Amaya's childlike wish to be descended from nobility. As yet, despite months of searching, Amaya has been unable to find her family line, or her true parents.

16. What kind of story does your character belong in?

Ideally something morally grey with occult themes thrown in. Probably something a bit dark, gritty, some horror thrown in. Ideally something that lets me play into Amaya's deep personal struggles

17. What role does your character fill?

Initially, Amaya functions as a ranged combatant. In a few levels, she probably prefers to mix things up in Melee and probably goes deeper into that tree later on. She should be an excellent scout, with Damon's incorporeal ability to scout through walls to be useful, and then eventually her flight / earth glide abilities as she levels up. At higher levels, she probably flashes around the battlefield. Amaya does intend to play around with Darkness (and Deeper Darkness) spells so there is an element of battlefield disruption but she should be straightforward to run in combat. Out of combat, she has her scouting abilities, as well as being pretty decent at Sense Motive / Perception Intimidate / Stealth. She's going to be ok in a few knowledge skills but is never going to be outstanding. Jack of all Trades might be an apt description, as someone that can do a lot of different things without specializing.

18. What should the other players know about your character?

Amaya's shadow is going to be the big obvious thing players are going tn notice, and from there its a leap that something darker is going on. I'm planning on flavoring Elemental Overflow (Void) and maybe Gather Power to show the effects Damon / Shadow Plane / Negative Energy is having on her which might encourage more party questions but Amaya doesn't really keep her cards close to her chest - more likely to tell people to either warn them away or maybe help her with her burden.

19. What is your play style?

I like to be involved, and I like details where possible as it helps to get deeper within the game. I like cool cinematic moments as much as the next person, but I'll usually try to adjust my style to fit in with the group.

20.How do you want your character to die?

Ideally mission fulfilled. Amaya currently is balanced right in the middle of good vs evil. What happens next is entirely down to her choices (and maybe the friends or allies she has around her). So if Amaya dies, I'd rather have her struggle resolved one way or another. Maybe she has a heroic ending sacrificing herself for others, or maybe its more tragic where she succumbs so her darker impulses. The actual result isn't as interesting as is the journey it would take to get her there.
