Merry Christmas, happy holidays, and a happy new year!

As they row away from the island and its darkness, Allister can feel his breaths deepening as if the lungs inside him had been shriveled and now grew again to their full size. The salt water felt refreshing and cool, and even the bobbing up and down over the waves and the hidden horizon do not bring back the nausea that first plagued him when they set out.

The island had taken a toll on the lot of them, and even the paladin's strong spirit had been dampened. He could feel it returning like sip of warm soup in his belly.

"It's a good thing that we did back there. I don't know there's many people but us that could've done it, either. We're not leaving with our packs full of riches, but there's plenty of reward to be had - just not one you can grab hold of like a shiny coin or flashy new armor... I'm just glad to have my friends with me. There were a few times I thought we might not make it out... But we did. We made it through that, we can make it through anything."

Allister sits silently for a few moments, then says a last word. "I'd go just about anywhere with you guys. Though it sure would be nice to go home."

He looks at their faces like he had known them for a thousand years, though it had been less than one. More like family than friends. But good family, like his Mom and Dad, and Baeloth too, before he turned rotten.

I vote to press onward. This is not a comforting place to rest.

For a moment Allister believes the weight off his shoulders to be relief. How naive.

When the increasingly-greedy young paladin looks down upon his unarmored body, he nearly cries. The others' words sound muffled as if they were speaking to him through a door. My armor. My gold... We've done so much good - can we not for once be rewarded? Through his tough exterior a slight tremble breaks and the big man looks like a child about to cry.

He opens his mouth to speak, but there is no sound. Only bitter dryness like a mouthful of sand.

Later, as Allister don's his old masterwork plate, he looks upon it with disappointment.

At their makeshift camp, Allister realized quickly just how hungry and tired he was. As Qina cooked he found himself hovering, and would steal bits and pieces whenever she wasn't looking before the meal was finished.

The warm food was so good that the young paladin found himself nodding off while he still clutched the empty bowl, and was snoring not long after.

Allister could definitely use a rest in the city before we push on. As for the scepter, he would prefer to throw it into the gold, but will defer to those smarter and wiser than him whatever the decision.

"Even if molten gold doesn't ruin that thing, it should do well enough to keep anyone else from finding it or using it again, right?"

Allister thinks with blank eyes for a few moments about what he said.

"I would be more comfortable if it were destroyed, though... I can try to throw it at the ground real hard?"

Allister blinks in disbelief. His friend had just became fire and destroyed a monster that nearly wiped them out a few minutes earlier.

"Whoa..."

He prepares to scuttle down the ladder and up the other side.

Allister's eyes go wide when Gad'larr turns into the fire elemental. Feeling the heat on his face, he steps backwards. He does not re-sheathe his blade, not knowing what to expect now that his friend has transformed into flame.

"Captain, say the word and I'll drop down and cut that snake's head from its body."

Allister puts his hand on the hilt of his greatsword and looks to his superior.

We're there ladder rungs on the opposite wall to climb up? And how far away is the top of the saga from the upper floor?

Allister takes several minutes to don his new armor and helmet, feel the weight and balance of his new greatsword, and load piles of coin and bars into his backpack.

Allister will also take any of Iramine's items that the others might have left behind. They are beautiful... She was beautiful, he laments, wishing his foe were an ugly orc instead.

Once he is finished, he realizes he can still bear the weight of his old weapon, and so he wears it on his back - the relief of not leaving his old friend is apparent.

"Brezik has a good idea, throw it in the molten gold. Or, if we need to bring it out, I will offer to carry it."

Too bad it wouldn't work outside... I could coat the whole world with gold..

We can make sure Qina and the others can carry everything first. Most of the stuff I'm dropping has little value and has never been used before. Brightfang, though... That Allister would absolutely want to being back. Now seeing the actual weight of coinage, I don't think we will have any problem.

Can we work on figuring out the weight of all this stuff? Allister has some difficult decisions - does he leave his beloved Greatsword Brightfang behind?

Mouth agape and eyes wide, Allister can hardly breathe while he looks over the beautiful new equipment that has taken form before him.

After the initial shock is gone, he realizes the armor and junk he currently bares are worthless in comparison and begins to empty his pockets.

"Someone, hurry, help me out of this old armor! Let's get this new stuff on quick so we can get out of here."

STR 20: Light 133 lbs or less. Medium 134–266 lbs. Heavy 267–400 lbs.

FYI - The weight of coins is 50/pound

Allister has a pretty impressive carry weight and is currently lugging around a whole lot of gold-plated junk. After he strips out of his current plate armor he should be able to sherpa a lot of this stuff out for anyone who can't carry it.

Just be forewarned, he will have a serious crisis on his hands if they are faced with leaving behind all this beautiful new loot. Just think of what he was willing to do to keep that stupid gold-plated chair...

For RP purposes, Allister, who has become quite the greedy hoarder and gear junky of late, would be happy beyond words if a massive pile of beautiful loot appeared around him. And he would probably be too stupid to ask how or why it appeared. So we're all good!

Allister is about to throw off his old armor and haul out as much of this loot as he can for everyone.

For a brief moment after combat has ended Allister looks confused.

"That was... weird. I know she was pretty and all, but why did all those cultists follow her?" He is unable to verbalize his surprise that she put up less than a fight than many of the cultists under her command.

"Oh well, fine by me! At least she wasn't another one of them snake things like we fought in the pit back there."

Allister begins to peer around the room, curious about his surroundings and the source of gold.

"Stop this madness! You don't have to die for this! Please, I beg you!"

If the elf woman does not stop fighting his friends, Allister will attack her with a heavy heart.

Hey all. I've been impatiently waiting a week or more for posts, and just found out tonight that the inactivity was because I had been logged out of my account. So I logged in to my account and saw I was several posts behind and everyone was waiting on me. F+&+. Well, I was never really gone, but I'm back. Sorry.

Amazed at how quickly the situation turned to violence, and somewhat relieved, Allister does what he always does.

The greatsword whips over his head at Iramine. He hardly hears his Captain demanding their foe surrender.

She is beautiful, he thinks as his blade falls.

The dim-witted paladin would not have noticed his stealthy foe's attack were it not for the screeching sound when the assassin's blade bit into his full plate. All his focus was on the other red cultist who had bashed and stabbed him.

"Bad idea," he said in a low and violent voice his friends had seldom heard before. Then his blade whistled as it cut through the air and swept back and forth again.

"Don't worry about me," he said with his unshakable smile that hid the burning pain from his bleeding wound.

Hearing his friends speak to cultists in the next room, Allister moves forward and draws his blade.

Double move, draw weapon.

"Your fake god will fail you like he has failed all the rest."

For a moment after their battle Allister felt stunned.

Three of my friends died so I could pretend to be a Lightbringer... It was not worth the cost.

Then Qina shouted that his friends were only sleeping and a massive weight fell off his shoulders. He could almost cry with relief.

"Don't worry Crow. Once our friends are awake I will give you all the bread you can eat."

He rushed over to his Captain and set to waking her. He shook her, lightly slapped her cheek, splashed water from his waterskin onto her head and face. "Captain, wake up! Captain!"

Allister watches in horror as his captain is laid low by the naga. He re-grips his greatsword and swings it with anger.

The beast is too shifty for Allister and both attacks sail wide.

Allister's face goes pale with embarrassment when he heals the beast instead of harming it. Then anger takes its place and he takes up his sword again.

After his greatsword attack fails to harm the beast that is fast wiping out his friends, Allister remembers another ability that might aid him in the fight.

He extends a hand towards the shifting, slithering creature.

When Allister sees his friend slump over lifelessly into the coins after it is stung by the vile creature, he quakes with anger.

Allister looks down into the pit, the bottom seems to sink further and further away. It must be 100 feet down.

He steps closer to the edge - and jumps.

The paladin's heavy armor drags him down like a missile and he lands on his stomach with a metal CRUNCH. For a second all the air is forced from is lungs and he squirms in the coins like a fish out of water. Then, with a gasp, he gathers himself and stands.

I will let GM roll damage.

At his Captain's orders, Allister descends down the ladder into the gold pit.

Just to confirm, is there a ladder down, and how far down is the pit from the ledge?

Once in the pit, Allister draws his blade and looks upon the beast for the first time.

Allister stands tall beside Qina, many times her size and weight but with a heart no bigger than hers. He squeezes her hand for comfort.

When Brezik passes him the rope, Allister braces and holds it taut for his friend.

Inside his armor he quivers with fear, remembering the muddy slope at the start of their journey so many years ago... Was it years? No, it only felt that way. He hoped this crossing would not be so embarrassing. Then again, if he fell here it would be into a pile of gold - that might not be so bad.

The paladin looks to his superior for guidance. "Captain, should I take off my plate before I go? I'm not sure how good I am at climbing rope. But I know I'm no good in a fight without armor."

Allister stands back by Qina, thinking about his new gold dining set and what to do with his dragon claws.

I need a gold house to put all this stuff in..."

"Oh, sorry Brezik. I thought that was pasta sauce." Allister puts his hand on the Dwarf's back.

Looking at Gad'larr's wounds, Allister moves to help his friend. "You were brave, and fast." He places his hand on the half-orc's shoulder.

Allister looks over the treasure, most intrigued by far by the gold-plated mundane items. He searches for any of the following: a chalice, a book, a plate, or cutlery. If any of those items can be found in the stash he will take them.

As for the other items, Allister shrugs. "I have no use for an axe, or another horn of fog. And I don't like the taste of potions, so I'm good. Qina, that brooch would look pretty on you."

It's the golden dragon skull that Allister truly wants, but once Belathorian begins to speak to it like an old friend, he changes his mind. "You knew this dragon?"

In lieu of the skull Allister will gather as many gold-plated claws as he can find (GM discretion for final number). "Hey, Bel? Maybe I could put my gold chair in the same room as your dragon skull?" Allister smiles at the idea, thinking himself a king.

I like the idea and think it would be more fitting for your character. However, I also agree with Brezik that it might be best if it occurred after a level-up. At that point the change could be after some deep introspection following a harrowing adventure - finally coming to terms with who she is as a person.

As for the mechanics of the change, I have no issue with you making sweeping changes so long as your character's thoughts and actions justify it.

@GM Fez - I like it. If that's how you run your other games, I say let's go for it. GM houserules rules are great.

The dragon's wicked aura is so strong Allister can almost smell it.

"Evil..." He growls the word under his breath like a curse.

Smite Evil: Swift action. The paladin adds her Charisma bonus (+3) to her attack rolls and adds her paladin level (+6) to all damage rolls made against the target of her smite. If the target of smite evil is an outsider with the evil subtype, an evil-aligned dragon, or an undead creature, the bonus to damage on the first successful attack increases to 2 points of damage per level the paladin possesses (+12). Smite evil attacks automatically bypass any DR the creature might possess. In addition, when smite evil is in effect, the paladin gains a deflection bonus equal to her Charisma modifier (+3) to her AC against attacks made by the target of the smite.

Allister moves towards the dragon while trying to sense if the create emits an aura of evil.

Move action + Detect Evil (move action)

If the dragon is evil, Allister will use a swift action to activate Smite Evil.

Reflex or Burn: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19

Though he burns, Allister dodges the hottest part of the flame.

Allister's eyes narrow when he sees their foe before him.

"I fear no dragon," yells the paladin as he runs forward, and it is true, though by all rights he should be afraid.

The soldier in him chides 'you are getting too far ahead of your group,' but the Dawnguard initiate in him believes 'this is the reason I am here, to destroy enemies like this one. I will not cower now.'

Brightfang glows like the golden everything as he rushes forward.

From the moment he met Captain Vivian, Allister had an immense respect for her confidence and inner strength. Now, as his friend drew her greatsword for the first time, his respect for her grew.

"Let's show this dragon what the Keepers of the Flame can do," he said while drawing his own blade.

Before the battle begins, Allister will run his hand up the blade of his greatsword, causing it to burst into light-radiating flame. Divine Bond, lasts 1 minute/paladin level. Grants the weapon a magical +1 bonus.

Allister will wait to use Divine Bond until just before their battle with the dragon begins. He will also position himself at the front of the group, hoping to draw the dragon's attacks - feeling overconfident that his full plate armor and lay on hands will protect him.

"If the dragon's undead, I've got some stuff up my sleeve. In fact, this is my kinda fight. Can't say the same for some of you, though... HA-HAH-HAH-HA!"

The paladin's laugh barely hides his anxiety. He had never seen a dragon before, except Qina, they always called her little dragon. He had only ever heard of dragons from childrens' stories that his mother used to read.

"Wonder if he's a gold dragon, or just a dragon covered in gold like everything else in this city," Allister says in a rare moment of clarity.

Once the battle ends, Allister looks with a broken heart at his cracked greatsword. Brightfang. It had been so long since he said that name, but his sword had been with him from the beginning. He trusted it as much as any of his friends, and now it was broken. He could have cried at the thought - until Brezik asked to see it.

Watching his friend repair his beloved blade filled the paladin with awe and thanks. When Brezik returned the blade, sharp and shining like new, he thought for a moment of hugging his friend. But the air was hot, and the dwarf who is already notoriously stinky had not bathed for days after sailing and camping near a molten river, so he pulls away and gives his friend a strong slap on the shoulder instead. "Thank you, friend. I felt naked without it."

He takes the blade, holds it out and checks that it is straight and true, then smiles.

Once Brightfang is back in its sheath, Allister's eye turns to the golden falchion. "Wow, a golden blade... Would anyone mind?" he asks as he picks up the blade off the floor.

As Crow warns the group of the dragon, Allister studies his new blade. It is beautiful, shining, and gold.

"Wait, did you say there was a dragon...? Like a real dragon? Here?"
