AefPakka Shantass grew up in the deserts of Kasath among the Farrunner Clan. They are nomadic merchants, traveling the wastelands bringing goods, news, and entertainment to other kasatha clans and settlements. Consequently, AefPakka never had a sense of “home” beyond whatever small patch of ground he slept on each night. However, it was on those nights that he looked up at the stars and felt peace and awe. Days were spent begrudgingly waiting for the star-filled night again. While other worried about bandits and nocturnal predators, AefPakka felt only serenity looking up at the sea of stars.
However, as the kasatha matured, he couldn’t always keep his head in the skies. As he became old enough to serve the clan and give back to it, he found he had little talent for business, being far too kind and forgiving to ever haggle and deal. He was also rather sickly for a young kasatha and lacked the endurance for the hunt. He then turned to entertainment, gaining a fair ability at the Tiltik (a musical instrument unique to the four-armed kasatha that is a cross between a sitar and steel drums) but nothing of great note.
Where he did start to find his calling is in dealing with people. When an angry member of the Redback Clan thought on of AefPakka’s clan members swindled him with some low quality spices, it was AefPakka who managed to talk the unhappy customer down by basically, convincing him that the weather that day was so nice, it just wouldn’t be right to be in a foul mood, and encouraged him to his family on a hunt instead.
Although, other of the Farrunner Clan wish he would leverage his way with people into something profitable, AefPakka has no interest in that. What it comes down to is that although he is reasonably well with people, he is ultimately just very mellow and serene. Furthermore, he genuinely likes people, especially people different from himself and his clan mates. Between his desire to be friends with everyone he meets to his seemingly inability to ever be fazed and angered, arguments often seem trivial and pointless.
AefPakka is fine with that, as he is fine with most everything. Whenever there looks to be trouble or something does start to get to him, he remembers the stars and lets that calm flow through him to others.
Then, on the day he awoke plugged into tubes and floating in a gel-filled tube, his first thoughts weren’t fear or anger – but appreciation. The situation was truly, very different from anything he ever experienced, and how many ever got to go through what he was going through now? Plus, given how the room does not look like anything a kasatha might have built, that means if others are nearby, they likely aren’t kasatha. No day can be all bad when it’s a day you get to meet new people. So AefPakka pulled the tubes out with a cough, and then smiled to himself. Yes, today – yet again – is a wonderful day.
