Background: The third son of a prosperous merchant, Adrianos signed up with Ilrien's military to make his mark and rose through the ranks to eventually command a company of dragoons--mounted rifles, outriders and skirmishers. Though his rise was halted due to his ignoble birth, Adrianos made economy of force his watchword and his company gained a fierce reputation. Ambushes, night raids, and precision strikes against enemy officers were his stock in trade, and whatever mutterings about honor and chivalry other officers might make he won his battles with efficiency and few casualties.
Then the war ended, and this time no new war replaced it. Ilrien reduced its armed forces and Adrianos' company was cashiered. As his savings rapidly dwindled he wandered from job to job as a private guard for years, until eventually falling in the with the rugged survivors of the Unburnt. It was among them that Adrionos learned powdercraft, a comparatively new arcane art channeled through ingesting alchemically infused black powder. Alas, power never comes without a cost, and powdercraft if fiendishly addictive. Even now Adrianos can't shake the cravings, though he does his best to hide this weakness.
His final mission with the Unburnt saw Adrianos draw the attention of House [_____]'s courtiers, and he accepted a job offer from them soon after. Though he's now a [____] man, the powder cravings have driven Adrianos to seek out pit fighting rings in the city's underbelly, where he has amble excuse to satisfy the need in powder-enhanced brawls and other (non-lethal) bloodsport. Sean, the proprietor of one of Ilrien's more notorious pits, has made no secret of his intent to leverage favors from Adrianos, who isn't sure how much longer he can put the gangster off.
Appearance & Personality.: Sharp cheekbones and sharper grey eyes, with a rangy build and a generous peppering of grey in his hair and beard. He dresses practically in well-tailored clothes that are nonetheless easy to move in, and when expecting trouble he has his rifle and long-handled cavalry axe close to hand. Not one given to flower speeches or bold declarations, Adrianos prefers to listen and watch, taking the measure of others until it's time to act. In both violence and politics he counsels never fighting opponents on their preferred ground if it can be avoided--indeed, if the best way to win means *not* fighting, that's best of all. Thus he has no objection to schemes and deceptions if that's what is most effective, though his sense of martial honor would him back from committing the ugliest betrayals and he abhors collateral damage.
