Absalon grew up in a wealthy merchants home. His father, like many fathers tried to pass his knowledge down to his first born son. However, Absalon was not destined to be a merchant. Family watched how as soon as he was able to read, he poured over every book he could get his hands on. He asked continuous questions, and generally annoyed everyone with his quest for more knowledge. Absalon's knowledge grew, and it almost caused him some trouble when a wandering sorceror came into town one day.
This visit was way too novel for Absalon; he had to meet the sorceror. As always, he made polite introductions, and launched into a series of questions, almost costing his father some profitable business. When he dared to correct the sorceror on one of his answers, the sorceror became angry. But a companion of the sorceror, a traveling wizard, calmed him, and explained the boy was quite right in his beliefs.
Thus, Absalon was virtually handed over to the wizard, and was bound overnight to the great school, where magic is taught.
Initially, he did well in his studies, but his knowledge of a subject far outstripped his young ability, and he was responsible for the destrcution of one of the four walls of the library. As a punishment, he had to help clean up his mess, and restack the books. Unfortunately for Absalon he was too good, and remained for years as the chief librarian. He settled into a confortable life, but something always gnawed at him.
He began to practice magic again, and found himself in the company of strangers due to yet another spell that has gone wrong. Although this time, it was not his fault.
Absalon is from the merchant class, which has always shown more talent and sense than the landed nobility. In fact, Absalon sees all nobility as an affront to talented people everywhere. Serfdom and slavery are also an insult to Absalon, since his conviction that people should be allowed to explore thier abilities unfettered. His view of the gods is similiar. They muddle in human affairs for their own gain, and make a general mess of things, better they stay in whatever plane they are from and leave us alone.
As a result of his early years he came to appreciate some of the finer things life has to offer, like a nice warm bed, good fire, sumptious dinner, fine wine, and fine ales. Money is never the end in Absalon's mind, but a good pint on the otherhand requires some coin to purchase.
Absalon is an affable character with general feeling of good will to most people and creatures. He has a soft spot for children, and poor parents. He has been known to procure various supplies for schools, orphanages, and the needy, without any known means. These mysterious acts of kindness tend to make his collegues suspicious and they watch him closely.
